Defending world chess champion Ding Liren and teenage challenger Gukesh Dommaraju played to a fifth consecutive draw Wednesday, with neither player taking the lead after eight games.

Both players were deadlocked at 4.0 points each in the first-ever World Championship encounter between two Asian players, as the 14-match tournament went past the halfway mark.

For the second game in a row, Gukesh appeared to give up a strong position during the middlegame by playing a series of inaccurate moves.

However, the Indian teenager rejected Ding's offer of a draw after 41 moves and played some attacks during the endgame in an attempt to get a result.

But the Chinese grandmaster fended off the offensive and the players eventually shook hands on another draw after 51 moves.

Gukesh admitted that he was not aware of his perilous position when he rejected the draw and immediately put Ding under check.

"I didn't think I was in much danger," said the 18-year-old, who played with the black pieces.

"I always thought that in my position, maybe I would have some chances but it was just a misjudgement of the position."

Ding for his part rued his inability to press home his advantage.

"Today during the game, I didn't realise that I was winning at some point," said the 32-year-old.

"I think he missed some important details which let me get back into the game but before that he was totally outplaying me again.

"Actually I didn't feel too nervous during the game but I felt uncomfortable out of the open."

Game nine of the series will take place at Resorts World Sentosa on Thursday.

Ding, who beat Russia's Ian Nepomniachtchi to become the world champion in Kazakhstan last year, defeated Gukesh in 42 moves in the opening game.

But the Indian teenager drew level by winning game three as Ding lost on timing after he was unable to play his first 40 moves in 120 minutes.

The first player to get 7.5 points will be declared the winner.

Tie breaks will take place if the players are tied on seven points after 14 games.

At his age, Gukesh is the youngest player in history to compete in the World Championship and he is looking to surpass Garry Kasparov as the youngest undisputed world chess champion.

Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer was on Thursday hit with a two-game ban in the German Cup after receiving the first red card in his 866-game career.

Neuer was sent off in the 17th minute of the match his team lost to Bayer Leverkusen in the last 16 as the 38-year-old goalkeeper rushed out of his goal and collided with an advancing Jeremie Frimpong.

With Bayern reduced to 10 men, Leverkusen won 1-0 thanks to a second-half goal from Nathan Tella.

A German FA (DFB) disciplinary committee said Thursday a "two-match ban" was the usual penalty for "preventing an obvious goal-scoring opportunity for a foul without a goal being scored".

The 2014 World Cup-winning goalkeeper apologised to his teammates for the red card on social media after the defeat.

With Bayern out of the competition, Neuer would not serve the ban until next season's German Cup or Super Cup.

Neuer's contract at Bayern expires at the end of the current season, meaning he would avoid the ban should he retire or leave German football.

Three-time Olympic dressage gold medallist Charlotte Dujardin was Thursday banned for a year following a horse-whipping controversy that led to her withdrawal from the Paris Games.

The British rider was provisionally suspended by governing body the International Federation for Equestrian Sports just days before the start of the 2024 Olympics after the FEI received a video showing her repeatedly striking a horse on its legs.

The footage, dating back several years, related to a training session at a stable. Dujardin's behaviour sparked widespread condemnation.

The 39-year-old, who has also been fined 10,000 Swiss francs, withdrew from the Games saying she had made an "error of judgement" and expressed deep remorse.

Dujardin is now sidelined from all competition until July next year, with the suspension backdated to July 2024.

"The FEI has suspended British dressage athlete Charlotte Dujardin for one year and imposed a fine of CHF 10,000 ($11,300), effectively concluding the disciplinary proceedings against her," the governing body said in a statement. "Dujardin has been provisionally suspended since 23 July, 2024 for engaging in conduct contrary to the principles of horse welfare. The time served during her provisional suspension will be credited towards the one-year suspension.

"During her suspension, Dujardin is prohibited from participating in all activities related to competitions or events under the jurisdiction of the FEI or of a national federation.

"British Equestrian and British Dressage have reciprocated the suspension, resulting in Dujardin's ineligibility to compete in any national competition or training events during this period."

British Equestrian chief executive Jim Eyre said: "The welfare and ethical treatment of horses has always been a priority and no one involved in our sport should be in any doubt that we expect highest standards at all times."

British Dressage chief executive Jason Brautigam said: "We stand united with the FEI in taking a zero-tolerance approach to any breaches of our equine welfare policies."

Dujardin has won six Olympic medals including individual and team gold at London 2012, retaining her individual dressage title at the Tokyo Games.

She could have become Britain's most decorated woman Olympian in Paris. A medal of any colour would have taken her clear of cyclist Laura Kenny, with whom she is tied on six medals.

Dujardin was eliminated from the European Championships in 2019 after blood was found on her horse, Mount St John Freestyle, in a post-competition check.

The FEI said the action taken then did not imply there was any intent to injure the horse.

During mid-2020, the investigative unit of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)&nbsp;sent the agency's top officials a report, including a warning based on an interview it had conducted with a doctor who had worked in China’s sports ministry. As per the doctor, China had been running a state-backed doping programme. While the doctor's revelations were years old, they made eyeballs roll back then. She claimed that the Chinese athletes were cheating on the basis of&nbsp;undetectable amounts of a little-known prescription heart medication, trimetazidine, or TMZ, which, in turn, can help increase stamina, endurance, and recovery. However, WADA has now sidelined its own investigators, raising eyebrows.

The decision by WADA leaders to prompt its investigators to remain silent&nbsp;has&nbsp;raised questions about the agency's response to repeated incidents of possible doping by Chinese athletes. However, the agency has backed its decision, claiming the reviews showed 'no basis to challenge the contamination explanation' given by the Chinese.

In a statement, as per a report in NY Times, WADA said that the decision was warranted because "a thorough legal and scientific review of the facts, including by external legal counsel,"&nbsp;showed "no basis to challenge the contamination explanation" offered by the Chinese.

"So there was no reason to refer the matter to WADA I&amp;I at that stage,” the agency further opined.

However, the reasoning provided by WADA has not been well received. Several antidoping experts claim that&nbsp;WADA should have never accepted China’s explanation for the swimmers’ positive tests at face value. It remains to be seen what the conclusion comes in this matter, being stretched since 2020.&nbsp;

Over the years, doping has been one of the worst nightmares for WADA, and any similar case puts the agency under immense scrutiny.&nbsp;

WADA sidelines own investigators over China athletes doping

Offering prize money at the Olympic Games was unfair and was shown at the Paris Games to favour a small number of elite athletes to the detriment to others, the International Olympic Committee said Tuesday.

In a taboo-busting move that sparked hugely mixed reactions, World Athletics president Sebastian Coe announced prize money of $50,000 (47,000 euros) for every track and field winner at the Paris Olympics.

No other sports federation pays prize money at the Olympics.

IOC spokesman Mark Adams said that the IOC's executive board had discussed the topic of prize money distribution, raised by International Federations and athletes' representatives, on the first day of a meeting in Lausanne.

"There was a large amount of agreement on the topic, I might even say, unanimity," Adams said.

"It was a question... of principle, efficiency and distribution within the Olympic movement."

"The biggest argument is one of fairness."

Adams' comments echo those made by IOC president Thomas Bach to AFP in April and come as seven candidates -- including Coe -- hone their campaigns to succeed the German as head of the Olympic body.

At the Paris Games, Adams said, "If all the medallists, athletes, and teams from all the sports were rewarded, it'd be about 1,000 athletes and teams who would benefit."

"They mostly come from what you might call the well funded and privileged National Olympic Committees. 65% of the individual medallists and teams winning medals are from 15 NOCs who were on top of the medal tally."

"It would only increase the existing inequalities even further... it was felt by the executive board that this goes against the mission of the International Olympic Committee, and it could very easily downgrade the Olympic Games to an elitist event."

"This was a principle supported by the participants, but particularly by the representatives of the IFs and as I said, by the athlete representatives, it's a matter of solidarity."

Adams said that studies of the Paris Games showed that prize money "would really overwhelmingly benefit a very, very small group of elite athletes to the detriment of others".

NOCs rather than international federations were free to motivate their athletes with prize money, he said, citing IOC president Bach's own experience with the German NOC after winning team foil fencing gold at the 1976 Montreal Games.

The Cavaliers started the season 15-0 but suffered their first loss at Boston last month by 120-117 and dropped their two prior games, both losses to Atlanta, before staging a fightback home triumph.

"For us, we've got to go out there and make a statement," Mitchell said. "They beat us in the NBA Cup. No excuse. We've got to go out there and try to build. We had two losses that really hurt. We weren't playing like ourselves. We needed this win."

The Cavs improved to 18-3 to stay atop the Eastern Conference while the Celtics fell to 16-4 as Cleveland snapped their seven-game win streak.

"You've got to trust your work and what we've been working on since training camp. That's the biggest thing," Mitchell said. "That's what you saw tonight and that's what it's going to continue to be."

The Celtics were without starting guards Jaylen Brown due to illness and Derrick White with a sprained right foot.

"Just because they've got two guys down, they've got a lot of guys who are capable," Mitchell said. "You've got to respect them. They're champions for a reason."

Cleveland led 51-49 at half-time but the Celtics dominated the third quarter for an 84-72 lead entering the fourth, Jayson Tatum scoring 17 of his 33 points in the third period to lead Boston.

Mitchell responded for Cleveland, including a floater that gave the Cavs a 103-101 lead with 67 seconds remaining and concluded his run of 11 consecutive Cavaliers points.

"The biggest thing is you've just got to pick your spots, find your moments throughout the game," said Mitchell. "They kind of went on a run and in the fourth quarter I started to make my imprint.

Tatum missed a layup and Mobley followed with a dunk for a 105-101 Cavs lead. Porzingis responded with two free throws with 26 seconds to play but Mitchell sank two free throws of his own for a 107-103 Cavs lead.

Boston's Payton Pritchard sank a 3-pointer to lift the Celtics within one point but Darius Garland, who had 22 points, hit two free throws to give Cleveland a 109-106 edge and the Celtics kept fouling Pritchard, who had 24 points, to keep him from taking more 3-point shots.

The teams traded free throws late until Pritchard deliberately missed one trying to get a rebound, but he committed a lane violation and Mitchell added two final free throws to seal the victory.

"At the end of the day, we executed on both ends of the floor," said Mitchell. "I scored offensively but we were getting stops and finding ways to get rebounds, loose balls, different things. That's what ultimately ended up getting us the W."

Cleveland Cavaliers comes from behind to beat champions Boston Celtics in NBA Cup showdown

Spanish champions Real Madrid beat Getafe 2-0 to move second in La Liga on Sunday with Kylian Mbappe finding the net after a difficult week, but also missing other presentable chances. The French striker has been criticised for his form of late, but after Jude Bellingham opened the scoring from the penalty spot, Mbappe slotted home a well-taken second.

Mbappe wasted three other clear opportunities but Madrid were able to climb within one point of league leaders Barcelona, who lost on Saturday at home against Las Palmas.

Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois compared the striker to a bottle struggling to disperse its contents.

"I'm sure he will end up scoring a lot more goals, sometimes it's like a bottle that's a bit blocked... when it all starts coming out at once, I think a lot more goals will follow," said Courtois. "That some (chances) didn't go in is a shame for him... but his goal in the first half is incredible, with that position to get a shot on goal and put it away like that is very hard."

Carlo Ancelotti's side have played one fewer game than the Catalans, and Atletico Madrid, third, who are one point behind.

"(Mbappe) played very well, he was active, dangerous as always," said Ancelotti. "He scored an important goal, he created chances in the second half and had a very active game, it's what we want from him."

Mbappe, playing in his favoured role on the left with Vinicius Junior out injured, was offered plenty of support by Madrid's fans.

"The fans understand more than anyone what moment the team is in, and the players (are in)," added Ancelotti.

Getafe set out to slow the game down and they largely succeeded until Allan Nyom tugged down Antonio Rudiger in the area after half an hour.

After Mbappe missed his penalty against Liverpool in the Champions League defeat at Anfield on Wednesday, Bellingham stepped up to take the spot-kick.

The England international outfoxed David Soria to send Madrid ahead on the half-hour with his third goal in three league games.

"Today Bellingham or Mbappe had to choose (who took the penalty), they both chose Bellingham," said Ancelotti.

Mbappe doubled his team's lead with a superb strike seven minutes prior to the break, after Bellingham spread the ball out to him on the left flank.

The France captain drove inside and curled home a low effort inside the far post for his eighth league goal of the season.

Ancelotti took off Bellingham at half-time because of an apparent knock sustained in a collision with Soria, but later said he thought the midfielder would recover quickly.

La Liga: Kylian Mbappe finds net after several misses in Real Madrid's win over Getafe at home

Liverpool have been used to second best during Pep Guardiola's era at Manchester City, but a 2-0 victory over the crisis-hit champions left little doubt over who are the team to beat in this season's Premier League title race.

Goals in either half from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah at Anfield on Sunday did not do justice to the scale of the Reds' domination as City succumbed to a sixth defeat in a seven-game winless run.

Arsenal and Chelsea are now Liverpool's closest challengers, nine points behind, with City 11 back and almost certain to finally loose their grip on the English top flight after an unprecedented four consecutive titles and six in the past seven seasons.

Guardiola reminded the Anfield crowd of that fact by raising six fingers when taunted with chants of "sacked in the morning".

The Catalan's defiance, though, could not mask the fact that City have rested on their laurels, while Liverpool have stepped up a level under Arne Slot.

Slot appeared to have the impossible job of succeeding the much-loved Jurgen Klopp.

The charismatic German brought Liverpool back to the top of English and European football. His title triumph in 2019/2020 was the club's first for 30 years and the only blot on City's dominance in recent times.

In contrast to Alex Ferguson's departure from Manchester United and Arsene Wenger's exit at Arsenal, Liverpool have turned a legendary figure leaving into a positive.

Klopp did much of the groundwork himself, rejuvenating the squad over his final 18 months in charge with the signings of Gakpo, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch.

Slot's only summer signing, Federico Chiesa, has barely featured due to injury.

But the injection of fresh blood, mixed with the experience of title winners in the prolific Salah, captain Virgil van Dijk, Andy Roberson and Trent Alexander-Arnold has proved a winning combination.

Slot has been keen to give Klopp's legacy credit, but the Dutchman deserves his due for the small details that have produced a run of 18 wins from his first 20 games in all competitions.

<h2>'A great day'</h2>

Robertson and Alexander-Arnold's narrower positions have left Liverpool less vulnerable in transition and contributed to them having the best defensive record in the league.

Gravenberch has shone since being transformed into a holding midfielder, while Gakpo is finally delivering on his potential under his compatriot.

Slot has also managed to keep Liverpool's momentum rolling despite constant speculation over the futures of Salah, Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold, all of whom are out of contract at the end of the season.

"City are a fantastic team, four times champions in a row and they have quality to punish any team," said Van Dijk. "So, overall, it has been a great day. "It's game-by-game and stay calm. But games like this, when you win it like this, is always a good feeling."

It is not just the Premier League that Slot has so far bent to his will.

Liverpool are also top of the Champions League with a perfect record from five games, including a memorable 2-0 win over Real Madrid on Wednesday.

Victory over City capped a dream week, but the former Feyenoord boss was still keen to use the English and European champions as the benchmark for his side's aspirations.

"Real Madrid and Manchester City have been and are so good, with managers that have won so many trophies, so it is always nice to come out of those situations as a winner," added Slot. "But they were able to win every single three days. We understand what we want to achieve is more than this winning once or twice, even against these big teams, if you want to win big things."

December may only be a day old, but already it is hard to see beyond Liverpool matching Manchester United's record tally for 20 English top-flight titles come May.

Terry Griffiths, former world snooker champion, dies at 77

Harry Kane limped off but Jamal Musiala's 85th-minute header salvaged a 1-1 draw for Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich at the home of rivals Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. England captain Kane pulled up with a left thigh issue after 33 minutes, shortly after compatriot Jamie Gittens had opened the scoring for Dortmund.

However, Bayern coach Vincent Kompany said he was optimistic Kane's injury was "not too bad" with Tuesday's German Cup last-16 match against holders Leverkusen looming.&nbsp;

"He (Kane) says it's not too serious. Let's hope so," said Kompany with the 31-year-old set to undergo scans.

Dortmund captain Nico Schlotterbeck spotted the run of Gittens, whose stepover left Konrad Laimer in his wake. His searing pace kept him clear of Laimer down the left flank and he finished expertly past Manuel Neuer.

It was a moment of brilliance from the Englishman and a repayment to coach Nuri Sahin for the faith he has shown in the 20-year-old, handing him 14 starts already this season.

It was also the first goal Bayern had conceded since October 23, breaking a run of clean sheets that had stretched back eight games in all competitions.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bayern's problems were compounded five minutes later with the loss of Kane but Neuer kept the Bavarians in the game keeping out a Marcel Sabitzer shot with his right leg just after the hour mark.

Bayern controlled much of the second half but could not convert their ball superiority into goals, until Bayern's best player on the night Musiala secured a point.&nbsp;

Leroy Sane's free-kick struck the Dortmund wall, Sane found Michael Olise, whose pinpoint cross was nodded in by Musiala.

"We're happy to have come back, I think we deserved it," said Thomas Mueller, Kane’s replacement from the bench. &nbsp;

Bundesliga: Harry Kane limps off in Bayern Munich’s draw against Borussia Dortmund

Las Palmas claimed a surprise 2-1 victory at La Liga leaders Barcelona on Saturday, spoiling the hosts' 125th anniversary celebrations. Las Palmas spoil Barcelona’s 125th anniversary celebrations with shock away win in La Liga

Saudi Arabia's bid to host the 2034 World Cup was considered "medium risk" for human rights by FIFA in its evaluation report, which said implementing reforms could take "significant time and effort". The release of the report Saturday comes ahead of the FIFA Congress on December 11, when a vote will be held to officially appoint the hosts for the 2030 and 2034 World Cups.

Saudi Arabia is the lone candidate for 2034 while Morocco, Spain and Portugal have formed a joint bid for the 2030 tournament, with Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay all set to host a match as part of the centenary edition.

The Saudi bid "presents a very strong all-round proposition, reflected in the results of the technical evaluation, which assesses the proposed infrastructure (both sporting and general) as well as its commercial potential," FIFA said in its report.

But football's world governing body cautioned, "in terms of human rights, the undertaking involved in implementing the various measures... particularly in certain areas, could involve significant effort and time".

FIFA said that was the basis for the elevated risk rating for a bid that received an average score of 4.2 out of 5 -- higher than the combined bid by the United States, Canada and Mexico for the 2026 World Cup.

"It is important to note that the bid involves significant opportunities for positive human rights impact," added FIFA. "There is good potential that the tournament could serve as a catalyst for some of the ongoing and future reforms and contribute to positive human rights outcomes for people in Saudi Arabia and the region that go beyond the scope of the tournament itself."

<h2>Another winter World Cup?</h2>

Saudi Arabia has yet to build several proposed stadiums for a tournament that could be held in winter, as was the case in neighbouring Qatar. The report highlighted average daytime temperatures in the capital Riyadh that exceed 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in June and July.

Human rights, a source of deep controversy at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, threatens to become a major talking point once again in the run-up to 2034.

Rights groups highlight mass executions in Saudi Arabia and allegations of torture, as well as restrictions on women under the conservative country's male guardianship system.

Free expression is severely restricted, with some people handed lengthy jail terms over critical posts on social media.

Saudi Arabia, which is hosting several high-profile events including Formula One and the WTA Finals tennis, is often accused of "sportswashing" -- using sport to divert attention from its rights record.

"As expected, FIFA's evaluation of Saudi Arabia's World Cup bid is an astonishing whitewash of the country's atrocious human rights record," said Amnesty International. "There are no meaningful commitments that will prevent workers from being exploited, residents from being evicted or activists from being arrested.

"By ignoring the clear evidence of severe human rights risks, FIFA is likely to bear much responsibility for the violations and abuses that will take place over the coming decade.

"Fundamental human rights reforms are urgently required in Saudi Arabia, or the 2034 World Cup will be inevitably tarnished by exploitation, discrimination and repression."

Harry Kane out for two weeks with hamstring injury, to miss Bayer Leverkusen clash in German Cup

Novak Djokovic said shared experiences with Andy Murray make the Scot the "perfect coach" as he bids to win a record 25th Grand Slam in Australia in January. Murray, a three-time major winner, retired after the Paris Olympics at the age of 37, finally admitting defeat in his long battle against injury.

Last week Djokovic made the surprise announcement that he was teaming up with his long-time British rival in the off-season and in the build-up to the first Grand Slam of the year. He admitted Murray, born just a week before himself, was caught off-guard but that they "connected really fast".

"I was trying to figure out what I need at this stage of my career, because I stopped with my (former) coach Goran Ivanisevic, who I was very successful with and worked for many years, in March," Djokovic told Sky Sports. "So, I took about six months to really think about if I need a coach and, if yes, who that's going to be and the profile of the coach.

"We were going through names and I realised that the perfect coach for me at this point would be someone who has been through the experiences I am going through, possibly a multiple Grand Slam winner, a former (world) number one.

"I was thinking about different people and a discussion about Andy Murray appeared on the table with me and my team."

Djokovic, who ended his wait for Olympic gold in Paris this year, is tied with Margaret Court for the most Grand Slam titles won by any player but 2024 is the first year he has not lifted a major since 2017.

The Serbian, who said the collaboration was also a surprise to him, hopes adding Murray to his team will help him challenge Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, who have established a new power base at the top of the men's game.

"I still will try to go strong because I feel like my body is serving me well. I still have motivation to win Grand Slams, make more history," Djokovic said. "That's one of the biggest reasons why I asked Andy to work with me, because I still have big plans, so as long as that's the case, I will keep going."

The two players were members of the so-called "Big Four", along with Rafael Nadal, who retired earlier this month, and Roger Federer, who left the sport in 2022.

Indian challenger D Gukesh played out a hard-fought draw with white pieces in the fifth game of the World Chess Championship against defending champion Ding Liren of China in Singapore on Saturday (Nov&nbsp;30).

The second draw in a row left both players with an identical tally on 2.5 points apiece, still shy of 5 more points in order to win the championship.

The two players signed peace after 40 moves. It was the third draw of the match.

The 18-year-old Gukesh is the youngest-ever challenger for the crown and had won the third game on Wednesday.

The 32-year-old Liren had won the opening game before the two played out draws in the second and fourth game.

It was the first time in the match so far that Liren did not have any problems with his black pieces. The defending champion was at ease as Gukesh yet again employed the King’s pawn opening and faced the French defence for the second time in the match.

Having lost the first game in the same opening, caution was the name of the game for Gukesh as he went for the Exchange variation only to find Liren well-equipped.

The opening, though has been tried at the top on and off, did not present black with any herculean defensive task as Liren showed after exchanging the queens early.

A pair of rooks changed hands soon after, leaving Gukesh with a level position. But, the Indian, true to his style, tried to create an imbalanced position soon after by allowing Liren to get a protected passed pawn on the sixth rank.

Liren did not find the most tested continuation and instead went for an equal endgame with Bishops of opposite colours. There was no doubt about the result of the game anymore but Liren decided to part with a pawn and got a fortress which did not allow any player to make further progress.

As per rules, the players had to complete a minimum of 40 moves and once that was done, there was nothing that could change the result of the game.

World Chess Championship: D Gukesh plays another draw with Ding Liren as scores stay equal after five games

Pep Guardiola says he is braced for the challenge of turning around Manchester City's fortunes after the worst run of his managerial career ahead of a daunting trip to runaway Premier League leaders Liverpool. City are without a win in six games, with five consecutive defeats followed by a 3-3 Champions League draw against Feyenoord on Tuesday, when City blew a 3-0 lead in the final 15 minutes.

Defeat at Anfield on Sunday would leave the Premier League champions 11 points behind Arne Slot's men.

Guardiola's angst was clear in midweek as he appeared on camera after the Feyenoord game with a number of self-inflicted scratches on his face.

The 53-year-old recently extended his contract at the Etihad until 2027 and said the chance to overcome a rare period of adversity played a part in that decision.

"The moment I feel I'm not positive for the club, another one will come. It has to be (the case). But I want an opportunity to try to do it," Guardiola said at his pre-match press conference on Friday. "I don't want to run away. I want to be there. I want to rebuild the team in many aspects from now on until the end of the season, the next seasons, to try to continue up there."

<h2>'Squad is really good'</h2>

City have repeatedly rewritten the record books of English football during Guardiola's eight years in charge. They have won six Premier League titles in seven seasons, including an unprecedented four in a row, and won the treble in 2023. But Guardiola has repeatedly called his side "fragile" and lacking in confidence in recent weeks.

"In the first knock we are not as stable as we have always been," he said. "In the past when we were able to go 3-0 up, we didn't score the fourth, we didn't score the fifth, but the game was dead.

"Now in the first moments (of adversity) I don't know how we are going to react for obvious reasons that we have, for the desperation to win, for the absence of important players.

"The best test to prove how stable we are is Anfield because we cannot expect they will not have that moment and momentum and that is when we have to stand up as a team."

Guardiola, though, disagreed that City's squad is in need of an overhaul in the transfer market.

Ballon d'Or winner Rodri has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a serious knee injury, while Guardiola has had to cope without a number of other key players.

"You have to now change everything -- I don't completely agree with that. We cannot forget three months ago we were champions of the Premier League," he said. "The squad is really good, but we don't have the squad. It's not just Rodri, nominated the best player (in the world), it's many, many, many other players. So that is more difficult.

"We don't have six, seven important players. We have played two weeks, three weeks without four central defenders, two holding midfielders. But step by step, the players come back a little bit and hopefully we can be together for a long time."

"The best test to prove how stable we are is Anfield because we cannot expect they will not have that moment and momentum and that is when we have to stand up as a team." Guardiola, though, disagreed that City's squad is in need of an overhaul in the transfer market. But step by step, the players come back a little bit and hopefully we can be together for a long time." Pep Guardiola keen to overturn Manchester City’s fortunes after worst managerial career run

Lando Norris said Max Verstappen should be a comedian when he responded on Thursday to the newly-crowned four-time champion's claim that he would have won the title more easily if he was driving for McLaren. The Red Bull driver made the comment after cruising to fifth place at the Las Vegas Grand Prix last weekend to seal his fourth drivers' title triumph.

"Yes, even earlier," Verstappen said when asked about such a scenario. "So I'd have been further ahead."

When it was put to Norris, the McLaren driver smiled.

"He should start doing comedy or something," said Norris. "He can say whatever he wants… Of course, I completely disagree, as I would. He's good, but it's not true."

Verstappen had also suggested he won his fourth title in a year when he did not have the fastest car for at least 70 per cent of the season.

His comments were clearly intended to irritate his friend and rival Norris whose title dream ended in Las Vegas.

But this weekend he and McLaren hope to move closer to winning their first constructors' championship in 26 years –- perhaps with some help from Mercedes who reeled off a rare one-two in Las Vegas where George Russell won ahead of seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton.

"Mercedes were very quick here last year so they're definitely favourites coming into this weekend," said Norris. "Red Bull were good, we were good, as well, so I'm expecting a good battle.

"I'm hoping it probably favours us a little bit more than Ferrari, but Ferrari fixed a lot of the woes that they were struggling with last year so really I've no idea, but when you look at things, Ferrari and Mercedes seem to be a better flow at the moment."

McLaren, on 608 points, lead Ferrari on 584 by 24 points with two Grands Prix, including a sprint this weekend, remaining.

After a fractious exchange with his Ferrari team, Charles Leclerc said he and team-mate Carlos Sainz, who is leaving to be replaced by Hamilton next year, had settled their differences.

The pair swapped positions several times in Las Vegas following team orders that left Leclerc disgruntled.

On Thursday he said: "I don't want to go back to what happened in Vegas... In the last two races of the season, we need to do absolutely everything in order to win that constructors' championship. That's all that matters.

"Whatever happened in Vegas, we discussed it and we are all good -- which is the most important thing. I have no doubts about it because we've always had a really good relationship.

"It's very clear for both of us that we just want to win the constructors' and it's by working as a team that we'll achieve that. I'm sure there won't be any problems with it," Leclerc added.

‘Europe’s best-performing team’ Liverpool aim to pile pain on Manchester City

Former Barcelona and Uruguay striker Luis Suarez has signed a one-year contract extension with the Major League Soccer club and will line up under new coach Javier Mascherano next season, the club said.

The 37-year-old striker has scored 25 goals in all competitions since joining the club before the start of this season including 20 in Miami's record-breaking regular season campaign.

After winning the Supporters' Shield for the best record in the regular season, with a new points tally record, Miami were eliminated from the playoffs in the first round by Atlanta United.

Since then Argentina head coach Gerardo Martino has left the club with his compatriot and Suarez's former team-mate at Barca, Mascherano appointed on Tuesday.

"I'm very happy, very excited to continue for another year and to be able to enjoy being here with this fan base, which for us is like family. We feel very, very connected with them, and hopefully, next year, we can bring them even more joy," said Suarez.

Miami's president of football operations Raul Sanllehi said Suarez had shown he remains an elite level forward but was also a key component in the dressing room.

"Luis was not only our leading scorer this season, but also a leader for the group. His impact cannot be understated," he said.

Suarez announced in September he was retiring from international duty with the Uruguay national team after scoring 69 goals in 143 games.

The forward played in Europe for Ajax, Liverpool and Atletico Madrid and had a season in Brazil with Gremio before joining Miami.

Olympic bronze medallist Bajrang Punia has been handed a four-year ban for refusing to take a dope test during the selection trials for the national team. The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) confirmed the ban on Tuesday (Nov 26) having provisionally suspended the wrestler in April this year. This comes as a major setback for the wrestler as the ban will likely end his pursuit of the Asian Games while also hampering his dreams of winning another Olympic medal.

<h2>Bajrang&nbsp;suspended for four years</h2>

Bajrang successfully appealed against the provisional suspension, with NADA’s Anti-Disciplinary Doping Panel (ADDP) revoking it on May 31, pending a formal notice of charge. NADA served a formal notice on June 23. After written submissions from Bajrang and hearings held on Sep 20 and Oct 4, the ADDP ruled to enforce a four-year ineligibility period starting 23 April 2024.

During the national trials in April, the 30-year-old wrestler refused to give his urine sample, thereby violating the code of doping conduct. He was initially handed the provisional ban but now faces action after the issue was raised by the ADDP. The suspension stems from a violation of Article 10.3.1 of NADA’s Anti-Doping Rules.

“Needless to say on account of the lifting of the provisional suspension for the period from 31.05.2024 to 21.06.2024 shall not be credited into the total period of ineligibility of four years,” the ADDP said in its release.

This will be a huge setback for Bajrang, who missed qualification for the Paris Olympics due to the provisional ban and poor form in the national trials. However, he was still considered a capable candidate to win a medal at the 2026 Asian Games, but the latest ban will all but end his dream. He had won a bronze medal in the 65kg men’s category at the Tokyo Olympics.

World No. 4 Arjun Erigaisi has had a stellar 2024 season. The 21-year-old became the youngest Indian to cross 2800 mark in live ELO ratings and also played a key role in India's historic victory at the Chess Olympiad in Budapest. Erigaisi stunned World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in a blitz game at the Tata Steel Chess India tournament earlier this month. He speaks to Wion's Nikhil Mathur on that and much more.

Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh clinched his first win over defending champion Ding Liren in the World Chess Championship, outplaying the Chinese on time control in the third round to draw level on points on Wednesday.

Having lost the first game rather badly with black pieces, Gukesh struck gold thanks to his preparation that gave him a huge advantage on the clock as Liren spent a lot of time mulling his moves in the first phase of the game.

Both players now have 1.5 points each after the second game ended in a draw on Tuesday.

"It feels great. The last two days I was happy with my play. My play today was even better, I feel good at the board and today I just managed to outplay my opponent which is always nice," Gukesh, who played with white, said in the post-game press conference in Singapore.

By move 13th, the 18-year-old from Chennai had a lead of one hour on the clock as he had spent just four minutes compared to Liren's one hour and six minutes.

With 40 moves to make in the first 120 allotted minutes without any increment, the complicated middle game had the desired impact on Liren, and Gukesh was relentless in finding out some difficult yet perfect moves to increase the pressure.

The players followed a much less-played variation in the topical Queen's Gambit declined and Gukesh followed an idea played by former world champion Vladimir Kramnik of Russia in a rapid game against highest rated Indian Arjun Erigaisi.

While that game had ended in a draw after Erigaisi survived a real scare, Gukesh delved deeper in the position and capitalised on some unforced errors by Liren.

The 32-year-old Liren had his light square Bishop under the scanner after the Queens were traded early leading to a queen-less middle game. With imaginative manoeuvres, Gukesh trapped the bishop parting with just two pawns in the process.

If Liren thought there was still counterplay, Gukesh disagreed completely, as he put his pieces around the centre to keep his position intact and gave no chances whatsoever in the resulting position.

Adding to the Chinese' woes was the clock as he barely had two minutes to make the last nine moves. Gukesh was at the top of his game and went for some tactical complications, threatening to trap the black king or to win more material.

Liren fell further on the clock and was just left with less than 10 seconds for the last six moves.

It was a hopeless situation when Liren ran out of time after 37 moves giving Gukesh his first victory in the showpiece.

Gukesh is aiming to become the first Indian after Viswanthan Anand to claim the coveted crown. Anand won the world championship five times in his glorious career and has been a mentor to Gukesh.

Thursday will be the first rest day of the event.

The 23-year-old won the Australian Open, US Open and ATP Finals before starring for Italy as they claimed a second consecutive Davis Cup triumph, but admitted he is not able to play with a completely clear head.

Sinner is still waiting for the outcome of the World Anti-Doping Agency's (WADA) appeal against his initial exoneration for twice testing positive for traces of the steroid clostebol in March.

"Of course it's in the head a little bit," said Sinner. "The most important part is all the people who are around me, who know me as a human being trust me -- that's also why I kept playing the level I have.

"Those who know me, I was emotionally a bit down, a bit heartbroken. Sometimes life gives you difficulties and you just have to (deal with) it."

After Italy defeated the Netherlands in the final, Dutch captain Paul Haarhuis said from the outside the doping case against Sinner was impossible to analyse.

"About doping, we never know what happened," said Haarhuis. "What's my feeling? Jannik is an unbelievable nice guy, a great player, but we never know what happened."

Sinner prevously told the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) that small quantities of clostebol found in his system were due to "contamination by a member of his staff who had applied an over-the-counter spray containing clostebol on his own hand to treat a small wound".

The ITIA accepted Sinner's claim and he escaped a lengthy ban, but WADA appealed and is demanding a suspension of one to two years.

Sinner became the first player since 20-time Grand Slam winning Swiss great Roger Federer in 2005 to go through a season without a defeat in straight sets.

The Italian defeated Netherlands' Tallon Griekspoor in the second singles rubber to clinch the Davis Cup, after Matteo Berrettini beat Botic van de Zandschulp in the opener.

"Coming back as defending champions and winning again is one of the best feelings," said Sinner. "I'm very happy and glad that we managed this. The whole team, we gave 100 percent, there's a lot of work behind the scenes which all of you cannot see."

Berrettini had a superb tournament, winning once in doubles against Argentina in the last eight and singles rubbers against Australia and Netherlands.

The 2021 Wimbledon runner-up hailed Sinner's performance over the season, since he inspired Italy to glory a year ago.

"It's a special experience (to watch Sinner)... last year when we were here we were looking in each other's eyes and saying that this guy is someone else, something different," said Berrettini. "We'd never seen someone hitting the ball so hard, so flat, since then he's lost six matches and as you can see he's the most humble guy on the planet."
