The Cleveland Cavaliers, playing without top scorer Donovan Mitchell, matched the second-best start to a season in NBA history on Sunday, reaching 15-0 with a 128-114 victory over Charlotte. Mitchell took the night off to rest after averaging 24.6 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.1 assists for the Cavs during their perfect run.

The host Cavaliers, however, made up for his absence with a balanced attack as Darius Garland had 25 points and 12 assists, Ty Jerome added 24 points, Evan Mobley scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Jarrett Allen contributed 21 points and 15 rebounds.

"We've always got some fight in us no matter what," Garland said. "Everybody is ready to play. It doesn't matter, one through 15.

"Everybody contributed. Everybody had a huge part in this win. That's just us. Just as a team effort."

They now trail only the record 24-0 start by the 2015-16 Golden State Warriors.

The win streak is already the longest in the Cavaliers' 55-year history, eclipsing three 13-win runs when LeBron James was with Cleveland.

Charlotte's LaMelo Ball had 31 points and 12 assists in a losing cause.

At Oklahoma City, Dallas forward P.J. Washington scored 27 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lead the Mavericks, playing without injured guard Luka Doncic, over the host Thunder 121-119.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led Oklahoma City with 36 points. He made a 3-pointer, stole the ball from Kyrie Irving late and hit a free throw but missed another and Luguentz Dort missed a 3-point shot for the win at the buzzer.

<h2>Randle hits late winner</h2>

Minnesota's Julius Randle sank a 25-foot 3-pointer at the final buzzer to give the host Timberwolves a 120-117 victory over Phoenix.

Anthony Edwards sank two game-tying free throws with 46 seconds remaining to set the stage for Randle's dramatic deciding shot, which produced the last of his 35 points while Edwards finished with 24.

Devin Booker led the Suns with a game-high 44 points.

Detroit's Cade Cunningham had a triple double with 21 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists to spark the Pistons over host Washington 124-104. Jaden Ivey had 28 points and Mailk Beasley 26 for Detroit.

Denver's Nikola Jokic, the reigning NBA Most Valuable Player, was out again for personal reasons in the Nuggets' 105-90 loss at Memphis. Jaren Jackson led the Grizzlies with 20 points. Reserve Julian Strawther led Denver with 19.

At Indianapolis, Myles Turner scored a season-high 34 points to lead the Indiana Pacers over Miami 119-110. Tyler Herro scored 28 to lead the Heat.

Portland's Shaedon Sharpe stole the ball from Atlanta's Trae Young and sank two clinching free throws, the last of his game-high 32 points, with one second remaining to seal the host Trail Blazers' 114-109 triumph. Young led the Hawks with 29 points.

Cleveland Cavaliers rocks Charlotte to match second-best start in NBA history

Lee Carsley admitted he was relieved to end his reign as England interim boss with the stylish 5-0 rout of Ireland that sealed Nations League promotion ahead of Thomas Tuchel's arrival.

Shrugging off a lacklustre first half performance, England ran riot after the break at Wembley on Sunday to secure the victory they needed to return to League A.

Three goals in the space of five minutes and 36 seconds did the damage in Carsley's last game before Tuchel takes over on an 18-month contract from January 1.

Harry Kane opened the floodgates with a penalty conceded by Ireland defender Liam Scales, who was sent off for a second booking.

Anthony Gordon, Conor Gallagher, Jarrod Bowen and Taylor Harwood-Bellis all netted for the first time in an England shirt to ensure first place in Group B2 after five wins from six matches under Carsley.

"It'd be fair to say there's a bit of relief," Carsley said. "If we'd have spoken at the start of the campaign we'd probably have said you're expected to get promotion but it's difficult.

"No team has rolled over for us and let us just carry on. I've found it personally challenging and I know the staff have. It's good that we've finished the campaign with such a strong performance.

"We spoke about not only gaining promotion from the Nations League but to potentially increase the pool of players Thomas has got to choose from.

"The challenge now for the players that have been involved for the last three camps is to be in and around the next squad."

A giant 'thank you' to Carsley was displayed on the Wembley screens at full-time, when Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham praised his work since replacing Gareth Southgate following the Euro 2024 final loss to Spain.

"He has selected some exciting new players and will be providing Thomas Tuchel and Anthony Barry with a very detailed handover," Bullingham said.

"The players have really enjoyed working with Lee and his team. They have made a real impact in their interim roles."

<h2>'Exciting times'</h2>

Carsley plans to meet former Bayern Munich and Chelsea boss Tuchel to present him with information about the squad ahead of next year's World Cup qualifiers.

"I'm trying to put together, with the rest of the staff, a debrief on all three camps," he said. "I will put together a document, then hopefully meet him and present what we think and what we've found. I'm looking forward to meeting him now in the next few weeks."

Carsley hands over the reins with England in good shape after he gave debuts to eight emerging youngsters to showcase the strength in depth available to Tuchel.

"It's a job that deserves an elite coach with a track record of winning and Thomas has got that. Exciting times ahead," he said.

After the disappointment of losing a second successive European Championship final under Southgate, England will begin the Tuchel era focused on winning the World Cup for the first time since 1966.

Tuchel has enjoyed success throughout a managerial career that includes Champions League glory with Chelsea and Harry Kane, who played under the German at Bayern, is looking forward to renewing their relationship.

"Thomas has a lot of players to choose from. A lot of young players that have come in and done well and some more experienced players that are injured and will be looking to come back so there's a good balance," he said.

Nations League: England’s interim manager Lee Carsley signs off with Ireland mauling

Adrien Rabiot fired France to first place in their Nations League group with a headed brace in Sunday's 3-1 win over Italy at the San Siro.

Ex-Juventus midfielder Rabiot netted from Lucas Digne set-pieces in each half at the home of his former Milanese rivals to ensure that Les Bleus leapfrogged Italy into top spot in Group A2 on goal difference, with both teams already in the quarter-finals before kick-off.

Digne -- like Rabiot making his 50th appearance for his country -- was also crucial to France's second goal, as it was his stunning free-kick in the 33rd minute which crashed out off the woodwork and into the net off Italy goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

France were on their way to top spot when Digne forced home via Vicario's back as they needed to win by at least two goals to move above Italy.

Andrea Cambiaso's neat first-time finish moments after Digne's strike put Italy back on top on head-to-head record, due to their 3-1 win in Paris back in September.

But Rabiot stepped up in the 65th minute to give France a positive end to what has been a tumultuous international break, with captain Kylian Mbappe left at home with little explanation from coach Didier Deschamps and a fraught goalless draw with Israel at the Stade de France on Thursday.

"It had been a while since we'd put in a performance like that. The fight and the team spirit should be highlighted," Rabiot said to TF1. "This is the true face of the French national team."

A tally of 13 points from a group including France and Belgium seemed unlikely for Italy in the aftermath of their dreadful European Championship title defence in Germany.

<h2>Italy 'lacking quality'</h2>

And the renewed enthusiasm for the national team was clear among the more than 68,000 fans at the San Siro, with the majority of the empty seats located in the sparsely-populated away section given to the French supporters.

France were the better team but created very little from open play, while Cambiaso's strike was the result of a fine passing move and excellent work from Federico Dimarco, whose give-and-go with Sandro Tonali ended with a teasing cross for the Juventus winger to tuck home.

And substitute Moise Kean came close to reclaiming top spot for Italy deep in stoppage time when his stinging shot was well-saved by AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, one of a number of players competing in familiar surroundings.

"We lacked quality today, we didn't make good choices and we made mistakes with the ball," said Spalletti to RAI. "You could see the team spirit out there. The defeat could cause us to lose some confidence but it shouldn't take away from what we've built."

The last six goals Italy have conceded have come from set-pieces, a fragility which is unusual for the traditionally defence-minded Azzurri and was exacerbated by an underwhelming display from Vicario.

Tottenham goalkeeper Vicario started in place of captain Gianluigi Donnarumma, who was left out before kick-off reportedly because of a stomach bug.

Donnarumma has been a frequent target of fans at the San Siro since his big-money move from AC Milan to Paris Saint-Germain in 2021.

Cricket Australia (CA) has allowed assistant coach Daniel Vettori to leave the Perth Test against India starting November 22 midway for the IPL 2025 mega auction, scheduled between the first game on November 24 and 25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Vettori, SunRisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) coach, will fly alongside Justin Langer (Lucknow Super Giants) and Ricky Ponting (Punjab Kings), also part of the commentary team with Channel Seven for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024.

In a rare instance, Vettori, highly valued by players and CA administrators, holds three coaching positions with different teams across multiple setups. While he works as an assistant coach with the Australian Team across all formats, the former New Zealand captain is also a full-time head coach of an IPL franchise while serving in the same capacity at Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred.

"We are very supportive of Dan's role as Head Coach of SunRisers Hyderabad," an Australia team spokesperson said. "Dan will complete final preparation for the first Test before attending the IPL auction. He will then be with team for the remainder of the Border Gavaskar Trophy."

Meanwhile, prioritising the IPL auction over Test cricket and scheduling the auction in Saudi Arabia in between the India-Australia Test is a sign of things to come.

Although Vettori had previously skipped national duty for franchise commitment, having done it during the Pakistan series last year, it’s the first time he will leave midway through a Test to attend the IPL auction.&nbsp;

The CA, however, has advertised for a new full-time national pace bowling coach, filling in for Vettori should he miss future action.

Following Team India’s practice conclusion at the centre wicket at WACA in Perth, Australia resumed training, with Vettori on deck with the BGT-bound squad on Monday (Nov 18). He worked closely with the bowling unit while also throwing left-arm orthodox bowls to batters, preparing batters to face Ravindra Jadeja.

Lachlan Stevens, CA’s national development coach, who coached Australia-A against India-A in recently concluded two unofficial Tests, alongside Australia’s Under-19 team, will link up with the Test squad in Perth, filling in for Vettori when he departs.

Jorge Martin defies two-time defending champ Francesco Bagnaia to win maiden MotoGP world championship title

Rory McIlroy won the DP World Tour Championship for the third time and claimed his sixth Race to Dubai title in the process on Sunday, matching the tally of legendary Spaniard Seve Ballesteros.

The 35-year-old from Northern Ireland made a crucial birdie on the par-4 16th hole to break a deadlock with Denmark's Rasmus Hojgaard.&nbsp;

He then birdied the par-5 18th hole for a three-under-par 69 that took him to 15-under for the four days and was enough for a two-shot win that also secured him a sixth Order of Merit.

The four-time major champion broke down on live television when asked what it meant to equal Ballesteros' record.

"It's really cool. I think everyone knows what Seve means to European golf. In the European Ryder Cup locker room, all we have are quotes of Seve," said McIlroy, who is now two behind all-time record holder Colin Montgomerie's tally of eight.

"We had a Seve shirt from 1995 when he played his last Ryder Cup in our changing room last year... For me to be mentioned in the same breath as Seve, I am very proud."

Rasmus, who was trying to follow in the footsteps of his twin brother Nicolai and take the trophy back to Denmark for a second year in a row, made a stunning 22-footer par save on the 17th hole, but could not put the pressure on McIlroy on the 18th as he settled for a par and a final round score of 71.

McIlroy, who started with a bogey and then made four successive birdies, dropped a couple of shots around the turn to be tied with Hojgaard after 15 holes at 13-under.&nbsp;

He finally edged ahead with a stunning second shot on the par-4 16th hole from 137 yards to less than a foot for his fifth birdie of the day and drained a six-footer on the final hole.

<h2>'Fitting end to 2024'</h2>

"I think I would have been miserable for a few weeks if I hadn't won today. I've been through a lot this year professionally and personally. It feels like the fitting end to 2024. I've persevered a lot. Had close calls. Wasn't able to get it done.

"So, to be able to get over the line, when I got off to a great start and didn't have my best in the middle of the round, was very satisfying. I felt a lot of pressure out there, most of them self-inflicted. But to finish the way I did, I can now go and have a good few weeks off," added McIlroy.

Including the Zurich Classic that the world number three claimed alongside Shane Lowry, it was McIlroy's fourth worldwide win of the season.

Hojgaard was disappointed at not winning the title, but happy to have secured the No1 card of the 10 PGA Tour cards on offer at the end of the week for the top 10 players who are not already members. The No1 card gives him entry into some of the big events, including the Players Championship.

"I came to Abu Dhabi (the previous week) with the goal of securing the No1 PGA Tour card, and I am happy that I have done it," said Hojgaard, who missed the card by one spot last year.

"It sucks to lose, but you need to make birdies in the end and Rory did that. I battled hard through the day."

Australia's Adam Scott and Ireland's Lowry shot final-round 68s to tie for third place at 11-under par alongside France's Antoine Rozner. England's Tyrrell Hatton was solo 6th at 10-under.

The 10 players who earned their PGA Tour cards are Hojgaard, Thriston Lawrence of South Africa, England's Paul Waring, Dane Niklas Norgaard, Swede Jesper Svensson, Antoine Rozner of France, Italy's Matteo Manassero, Thorbjorn Olesen of Denmark, Japan's Rikuya Hoshino and Tom McKibbin of Northern Ireland.

Golf: Rory McIlroy wins sixth Race to Dubai title with DP World Tour Championship win

Spanish superstar Rafael Nadal is aiming to cap his emotional farewell from tennis with another Davis Cup triumph in Malaga next week. Nadal, 38, has battled injuries over the past few years and the extent to which he can compete for his country is unknown, but all eyes will be on the 22-time Grand Slam winner.

The veteran led Spain to victory in Madrid five years ago -- the last time they won the trophy and Nadal's fourth.

However, he admitted Saturday that his role in Malaga may be limited to doubles rather than singles.

"First off, we'll have to see how I feel in training and, if I really don't feel I have a chance to win the singles, I'll be the first to not want to play," Nadal said in comments to the Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET). "If I don't feel ready, I'll be the first to speak to the captain (David Ferrer). I've already told him on a few occasions not to make any decisions based on the fact that it's my last week as a professional tennis player."

French Open and Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz will be Spain's leading player and his presence offers Nadal a real chance of retiring on a high note.

"Probably one of the most special tournaments that I'm going to play. Last tournament of Rafa, I'll be able to be next to him in the last moments on a tennis court for him," said Alcaraz who played alongside Nadal in doubles at the Olympics in Paris this year.

"I think it's most important for Rafa, for his last tournament. I really want him to retire with a title. It's going to be really, really emotional and a really special tournament for me."

Representing Spain, Nadal won singles gold at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and triumphed in the doubles at Rio 2016 alongside Marc Lopez.

But former world number one Nadal's injury setbacks in the twilight of his career have seen his ranking slump to 155.

The last of his 92 career titles came with his 14th French Open and 22nd major at Roland Garros in 2022.

He hasn't played a competitive singles match since losing to Novak Djokovic at the Olympics in July while in 2023 he played just four times.

Many are hoping for Spain and Alcaraz to meet world number one Jannik Sinner's Italy, the defending champions, in the final, as the two young stars continue to build on a gripping rivalry.

Record 32-time champions the United States have selected a strong team spearheaded by US Open finalist Taylor Fritz and are also among the most likely contenders.

Nadal clashed with Alcaraz in Saudi Arabia at the "Six Kings Slam" exhibition in October, losing in straight sets, but they will be fighting for the same goal in Andalucia.

The start of the Billie Jean King Cup was delayed because of a weather alert in the Malaga region, in the wake of devastating floods in the east of Spain.

Alcaraz, ranked third in the world, said the flooding in Valencia increased his motivation to help his country triumph.

"I'm here to give my grain of sand because playing for Spain is the biggest thing that there is for me," he continued.

Tennis greats and stars from other sports are among those clamouring to watch Nadal's farewell, with career rivals Djokovic and Roger Federer among those expected to attend.

Spain face the Netherlands on Tuesday in the last eight, with the winner taking on Germany or Canada in the semi-finals.

Rafael Nadal nears career end, reveals role in Davis Cup farewell for Spain

Gianluigi Donnarumma said Saturday that he was grateful Italy would not have to face his former Paris Saint-Germain teammate Kylian Mbappe in their final Nations League group match with France.

Mbappe was surprisingly dropped for France's fixtures in November after an underwhelming start to life at Real Madrid this season, with Les Bleus coach Didier Deschamps refusing to say why he had not picked his star player.

France could only manage a fraught goalless draw with Israel on Thursday in Mbappe's absence, and Deschamps' team have to win by at least two goals at the San Siro in order to top Group A2.

"It's a big absence, I know him and he's one of the best players of the world," Italy captain Donnarumma told reporters. &nbsp;"If he was there, he would have caused us problems, but they have other players and a lot of quality. They have a lot of good players who can cause us problems and have a lot of energy."

Italy, who have been rejuvenated over the course of the Nations League group stage, are unbeaten since their dismal European Championship title defence in the summer and lead France by three points.

Luciano Spalletti's team would likely have come into Sunday's match with a perfect record of five wins from five matches had they not had to play over half of last month's 2-2 draw with Belgium in Rome with 10 men after taking an early two-goal lead.

<h2>'Right solutions'</h2>

Sandro Tonali hailed the spirit in the Italy camp after netting his first international goal in Thursday's 1-0 win over Belgium in Brussels, saying that the players "couldn't wait" to get back together once returning to their clubs.

"They've found the right solutions for us, and that means that Italy are playing like Italy again," added Donnarumma. "After the disappointment of the Euros we needed a jolt, and our aim is to continue to improve, work, have fun and entertain the fans."

Set to play in attack for France is Inter Milan forward Marcus Thuram, who has disappointed for his country but will take the field in familiar surroundings on Sunday.

Thuram, the son of French football icon Lilian, has been a revelation for Inter, netting 23 times since signing from Borussia Moenchengladbach last year.

But while he has become a key player for Serie A's best team, he has only scored twice in 28 international appearances with his most recent goal for Les Bleus coming against minnows Gibraltar just over a year ago.

"He's doing really well at Inter. He's obviously been less effective for the national team but it will come," said defender Ibrahim Konate. "We're not worried about it because he has everything. It will come bit by bit."

Italy’s Gianluigi Donnarumma thankful for Kylian Mbappe absence in France showdown in Nations League

Netherlands outclassed Hungary with a 4-0 victory in their winner-takes-all Nations League encounter on Saturday while record-setting Germany hammered Bosnia and Hercegovina 7-0.

Netherlands and Hungary went into the match tied on five points each and with the winner set to join Germany in ensuring their progress from Group A3 to the quarter-finals.

First-half penalties by Wout Weghorst and Cody Gakpo sent the Oranje on their way, before Denzel Dumfries and Teun Koopmeiners made the game safe in the second period.

"There are always things we can improve upon," Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk told SBS6. "But in the end, we deserved to win."

The match at the Johan Cruyff Arena was briefly interrupted in the seventh minute following a medical emergency on the Hungarian bench.

The referee stopped play for some 10 minutes while Hungary's assistant coach Adam Szalai received treatment, shielded from view by huddled players and staff members, as well as a large white sheet.

Szalai, 36, was stretchered off to applause from spectators and players alike, the Hungarian FA later released a statement saying he was "conscious" and in a "stable condition" at an Amsterdam hospital.

"It was a scare of course," Gakpo told NOS. "Fortunately, I just heard he regained consciousness on the pitch. Things like this are more important than football."

Almost forgotten in the aftermath of the worrying incident was the handball by Tamas Nikitscher as the ball was crossed into the Hungarian box.

The referee consulted the touchline video monitor and promptly restarted play by pointing to the spot, allowing Weghorst to sweep the Netherlands in front.

Denes Dibusz was the busier of the two goalkeepers as the first period wore on and had to be alert to keep out efforts from Tijjani Reijnders and Donyell Malen.

In the 11th minute of added time, Dutch dominance told and Malen was clipped by Zsolt Nagy in the box.

Gakpo dispatched the resulting spot-kick, sending Dibusz the wrong way and Netherlands into a two-goal lead.

Right-back Dumfries sealed the Netherlands' spot in the quarters as he latched onto Malen's flick-on at the back post and fizzed a volley back into the far corner shortly after the hour.

Koopmeiners marked his first international match since 2022 by nodding in a fourth in the 86th minute.

<h2>'Good fun'</h2>

Germany cemented their spot at the top of the group with a 7-0 win over Bosnia -- the heaviest in the six-year history of the Nations League.

"It was good fun tonight. After a couple of goals we did the work defensively and then everything came together offensively. The more that happens, the more fun we have on the pitch," German attacker Jamal Musiala told UEFA's website.

Musiala opened the floodgates after two minutes with a header from Joshua Kimmich's cross.

Tim Kleindienst scored his first goal for Germany in the 23rd minute and Kai Havertz made the game safe eight minutes before the break, slotting home after a slick one-two with Florian Wirtz.

Wirtz then made it four on 50 minutes with a sublime swerving free-kick from wide on the left, before doubling up seven minutes later.

"Seeing Flo (Wirtz's) free-kick was kind of nice but just in general everyone played well, had good moments. We're just playing good football," added Musiala.

Substitute Leroy Sane scored Germany's sixth in the 66th minute and Kleindienst completed the rout just over 10 minutes from time as he guided home a pinpoint cross from centre-half Antonio Rudiger.

The emphatic result leaves Germany five points ahead of Netherlands with only one match left to play.

In Group B1, Georgia played out a 1-1 draw at home to Ukraine and stay two points ahead of the fourth-placed visitors.

The Czech Republic drew 0-0 in Albania and remain top of the group on eight points, one ahead of Georgia in second and their third-placed opponents.

Turkey stayed top of Group B4 with a 0-0 draw at home to Wales, while Iceland beat Montenegro 2-0.

Turkey were presented with a golden opportunity to grow their two-point lead over Wales but Kerem Akturkoglu sent his 89th-minute penalty wide.

"But in the end, we deserved to win." The match at the Johan Cruyff Arena was briefly interrupted in the seventh minute following a medical emergency on the Hungarian bench. Things like this are more important than football." Nations League: Netherlands rock Hungary to reach quarters; Germany hit record seven against Bosnia

West Indies, led by explosive half-centuries from openers Shai Hope and Evin Lewis, chased down a target of 219 to beat England with an over to spare and won by five wickets in the&nbsp;T20 international on Saturday.

The game was a dead rubber, with England having already won the opening three matches of the five-game series but the crowd at the Darren Sammy Cricket Ground were treated to some high-scoring entertainment as the West Indies enjoyed their second-highest successful run chase in T20Is.

England openers Phil Salt and Will Jacks put on 54 runs for the first wicket before Alzarri Joseph got Jacks caught behind off the final ball of the fifth over.

But Salt continued to take full advantage of a good batting track and took England to 102 before he was removed by Roston Chase in the tenth over for 55, having hit&nbsp;four sixes and five fours in his knock.

Skipper Jos Buttler hit 38 off 23, but it was an unbeaten 62 from Jacob Bethell and a useful 24 off&nbsp;13 balls from Sam Curran that took England to a strong score.

West Indies top order has struggled in this series, but this time Hope and Lewis attacked England from the outset&nbsp;and swiftly reduced the required run-rate.

Hope brought up his 50 off 23 balls -- slamming a short ball from Rehan Ahmed through midwicket to reach his half century.

Lewis, who had played a supporting role, went on the offensive, hitting Liam Livingstone for three sixes in the eighth over and he too reached his half-century (26 balls) when he pulled Curran through square leg for four.

Rehan Ahmed finally got the breakthrough when Lewis mistimed a cover-drive to Dan Mousley, the West Indies opener departing for 68, including seven sixes.

On the next ball, Hope departed, run out by Livingstone, and England picked up a third wicket in as many balls when Nicholas Pooran was bowled by Ahmed after finding the inside edge.

Suddenly, the West Indies were 136-3 and with a new pair at the crease, England sensed the chance to turn the game around.

But skipper Rovman Powell showed no nerves as he hit 38 from 23 balls with three sixes before he was trapped lbw by John Turner.

Sharfane Rutherford saw the home side to a morale-boosting victory with his unbeaten 29 ending the contest by smashing Mousley for two sixes.

"Guys were more committed today," said Powell. "It has been a series where you win the toss, win the game, but the guys played well -- 3-2 is better than 4-1, still a lot to play for," he said, looking ahead to Sunday's final game.

Despite the loss, Butler said he had few complaints about the performance.

"I thought it was an excellent wicket. We got off to a great start with Jacks and Salty. Thought we needed at least 220. They played exceptionally well, put us under pressure. I thought we played well, put up a good score and they played well to chase it down," he said.

West Indies restore pride with win in high-scoring thriller against England in 4th T20I

YouTuber Jake Paul emerged victorious against boxing veteran Mike Tyson via unanimous decision in a lopsided tie on Friday night at AT&amp;T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The judges concluded the scoring 80-72, 79-73, 79-73 in Paul’s favour as the 27-year-old won the eight-round bout.&nbsp;

Tyson’s much-anticipated return to the boxing ring saw once deemed the ‘Baddest Man on the Planet’ fall short of glory to prizefighter Paul. Though Tyson was the fan favourite in the lead-up to this contest, Paul’s quick reflexes, endurance, and stamina helped him stand tall in the end.&nbsp;

The 58-year-old struggled to replicate his performances in his prime for obvious reasons, failing to mount any significant offense as Paul troubled him with jabs throughout the eight two-minute rounds. Such was the veteran’s performance that Tyson slapping Paul for stepping on his foot during Thursday’s weigh-in during the final stare-down was perhaps the best strike he landed.

Meanwhile, since losing to Kevin McBride on June 11, 2005, Tyson returned to the boxing ring for the first time as a professional. The greatest American boxer at one point in time recently faced Roy Jones Jr. in a 2020 exhibition bout, impressing everyone with his performance, setting the stage for a fight with Paul.

That, however, didn’t turn out the way he would have liked, as Tyson (50-7, 44 KOs, 2 NCs) lacked zeal and his signature style of boxing, with the knee brace restricting his movement.

<h2>Paul stars against Tyson&nbsp;</h2>

Paul, 27, was earlier scheduled to face the former heavyweight champion on July 20 this year, but the fight got postponed after Tyson suffered an ulcer flare-up on a flight.

Instead of waiting to face Tyson, Paul took on the former UFC fighter and current BKFC competitor Mike Perry, scoring a sixth-round TKO against him.&nbsp;

However, against Tyson, 31 years older than him, Paul failed to land a KO, but instead used lateral movement to disturb Tyson’s rhythm, smashing some jabs to add salt to injury.&nbsp;

Though neither looked in any danger, Paul remained in control and won in the end.&nbsp;

After the bout, Jake also bowed down to Tyson, calling him the greatest of all time.

Jake Paul beats boxing veteran Mike Tyson via unanimous decision in a lopsided bout

Sanju Samson was on a rampage during the fourth and final T20I against South Africa at the Wanderers on Friday (Nov 15), hitting his second hundred of the series and third in the last five games. Though he and Tilak Varma, fellow centurion, entertained the Johannesburg crowd with an excellent show, one of Samson’s nine sixes left a fan in the stands inconsolable after the ball deflected from the boundary boards only to hit her on the face.

The shot hit off Tristan Stubbs’ flighted delivery was hard, but the blow was harder, as replays showed how impactful it was. While the onlookers immediately jumped to her rescue, bringing her the ice pack as she continued weeping, Samson also raised his hand to apologise.&nbsp;

With Tilak Varma coming in at number three, a position at which he slammed his maiden T20I hundred in the previous game, he continued from where he left off at the SuperSport Park in Centurion. <h2>Proteas no competition to India</h2>

Although the hosts won the second game at St George's Park in Gqeberha while coming agonisingly close to winning the next one, chasing a daunting 284 turned out too much for them.&nbsp;

Following the worst possible start, where they were reduced to 10 for four inside the first three overs, with Arshdeep wreaking havoc with his three-wicket haul, David Miller and Stubbs stitched an 86-run stand for the fifth wicket. That partnership tried compensating for the horrible beginning but failed to get their team anywhere close to the chasing target, as South Africa got all out for 148, going down by 135 runs.

With this win, India finished 2024 with 24 victories out of 26 contested T20I matches, including winning their second T20 World Cup in the Americas early in June.&nbsp;

SA v IND, 4th T20I: Female fan inconsolable after Samson's six hits her face, batter apologises - WATCH

Paul Pogba's Juventus career is over after the Serie A club announced on Friday that the France midfielder's contract had been terminated even though his doping ban was cut to 18 months on appeal.

Pogba will be able to return to competitive football in March after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) chopped last month an initial four-year suspension handed down by the Italian anti-doping authority NADO.

ALSO READ:&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/cristiano-ronaldo-hits-brace-as-portugal-thrash-poland-to-reach-nations-league-quarters-spain-win-776589">Cristiano Ronaldo hits brace as Portugal thrash Poland to reach Nations League quarters, Spain win</a>

But Juventus have decided to cut ties with the 31-year-old, whose return to Turin from Manchester United in 2022 was ruined by a string of problems on and off the pitch.

In a statement, Juve said that they and Pogba "have reached a mutual agreement for the termination of their contract as of 30 November, 2024".

His contract had been due to expire in 2026.

"You gave me a lot, more than what I could ever say, and I'll always keep with me the love you showed me," said Pogba to Juve fans on social media. "You'll always be in my heart. Good luck."

Pogba had said in October that he was "willing to give up money to be able to play again with Juve", an appeal which fell on deaf ears at the "Old Lady" of Italian football.

Juve's announcement is no surprise as both coach Thiago Motta and sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli have both repeatedly referred to Pogba in the past tense, saying that "he was a great player".

Pogba, a World Cup winner with France in 2018, started just one match after rejoining Juve -- with whom he won four Serie A titles between 2012 and 2016 -- in the summer of 2022.

He last played for Juve at Empoli in September last year, not long before he was provisionally suspended for testing positive for testosterone.

<h2>Doping ban</h2>

That test came following Juve's opening Serie A fixture of last season the previous month, a 3-0 win at Udinese in which he didn't even play.

He was then banned for four years by NADO in February, a sanction which put his career at risk before CAS reduced his punishment.

CAS accepted Pogba's argument that the failed test "was the result of erroneously taking a supplement prescribed to him by a medical doctor in Florida".

However, CAS did not completely exonerate Pogba as he "was not without fault" and as a professional football player, "he should have paid a greater care in the circumstances".

During the 2022-23 season, Pogba made just 10 appearances for Juve, mainly due to a knee injury that also ruled him out of the World Cup in Qatar where France lost out to Argentina in the final in December 2022.

He was also the victim of a case of organised extortion, for which six men, including his brother Mathias, have been ordered to stand trial.

In Pogba's absence Juve switched manager from Massimiliano Allegri to Motta and brought in a host of new players as part of a rebuild.

Juve, who finished third last term without Pogba, splashed out over 120 million euros on midfielders Teun Koopmeiners, Douglas Luiz and Khephren Thuram in a busy summer on the transfer market.

They currently sit sixth in Serie A but are only two points behind league leaders Napoli and face AC Milan at the San Siro after the international break.

ALSO READ: Cristiano Ronaldo hits brace as Portugal thrash Poland to reach Nations League quarters, Spain win But Juventus have decided to cut ties with the 31-year-old, whose return to Turin from Manchester United in 2022 was ruined by a string of problems on and off the pitch. Good luck." Pogba had said in October that he was "willing to give up money to be able to play again with Juve", an appeal which fell on deaf ears at the "Old Lady" of Italian football. Doping ban That test came following Juve's opening Serie A fixture of last season the previous month, a 3-0 win at Udinese in which he didn't even play. Juventus cut ties with Paul Pogba, terminates his contract despite doping ban reduction

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Portugal thrashed Poland 5-1 thanks to a rampant second-half display on Friday to reach the Nations League quarter-finals, while already-qualified Spain beat Denmark. Roberto Martinez's Portugal wrapped up top spot in Group A1 with a game to spare, securing their place in the next round in March.

France, Germany and Italy are also already through to the last eight.

Poland were the better side early on but failed to take their chances in Porto and the home side made them pay, netting four times in the last 20 minutes.

"We couldn't impose ourselves on the game in the first half," said Portugal goalscorer Rafael Leao. "(Coach) Roberto Martínez's approach in the locker room was important; it was the key to changing the pressure at half-time."

Ronaldo volleyed over from close range shortly before the interval, as Portugal failed to register a shot on target in the first half.

Dominik Marczuk almost broke the deadlock in the 58th minute, but Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa produced a brilliant fingertip save to deny him.

The hosts broke from the resulting corner to score less than 60 seconds later, as Leao powered forward before finding Nuno Mendes, then continuing his run to meet the Paris Saint-Germain full-back's cross with a powerful header.

Portugal were awarded a penalty when Diogo Dalot's strike flicked off Jakub Kiwior's hand at point-blank range and was saved by Marcin Bulka.

Ronaldo stepped up to dink home a 'Panenka' spot-kick.

That goal ended any hopes Poland had of staging a comeback and Fernandes added a third for Portugal with 10 minutes left, crashing the ball in off the crossbar from just outside the box.

Pedro Neto also got on the scoresheet, collecting Ronaldo's pass and rifling past Bulka at his near post.

There was still time for Ronaldo to double his tally and move onto 135 international goals, acrobatically volleying home Vitinha's cross from close range in the 87th minute.

Marczuk drilled in a consolation for Poland, but they can no longer qualify for the knock-out stages and will be relegated if they lose to Scotland next week.

In the other match in the group, Scotland gave their hopes of avoiding the drop a massive boost as John McGinn scored a late winner in a 1-0 victory over 10-man Croatia.

Petar Sucic was sent off in the first half, but Croatia almost hung on for the point they needed to qualify with Portugal, only for McGinn to strike in the 86th minute.

<h2>Spain roll on</h2>

European champions Spain stayed unbeaten in Group A4 with a 2-1 win over Denmark in Copenhagen.&nbsp;

Luis de la Fuente's visitors started strongly and went close to a 13th-minute opener when the in-form Ayoze Perez rattled the crossbar.

Spain took an early lead after Denmark carelessly gave the ball away on the edge of their own box.

Perez played in Mikel Oyarzabal who took an excellent first touch and slipped the ball past goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel and in at the near post.

Villarreal forward Perez, who only made his international debut in June, doubled Spain's advantage with a low, left-footed finish into the bottom corner after being picked out by Dani Olmo.

Gustav Isaksen pulled one back for Denmark late on, pouncing on a terrible mix-up between Fabian Ruiz and 'keeper David Raya.

"A very, very happy night for me (with a goal and an assist), but the most important thing is going through top of the group," Perez told uefa.com.

The other game in Group A4 saw Switzerland relegated by Aleksa Terzic's late equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Serbia.

Romania's Group C2 game against Kosovo in Bucharest was suspended in injury time and then abandoned with the game goalless after the visiting players walked off the pitch following chants of "Serbia" from the home fans.

"The UEFA Nations League match between Romania and Kosovo has been abandoned. UEFA will communicate further information in due course," said governing body UEFA on its website.

In League D, San Marino kept their hopes of an unlikely promotion alive as Nicola Nanni scored an injury-time penalty to grab a 1-1 draw with Gibraltar.

Reports emerged on social media Friday (Nov 15) night that the couple had been blessed with their second child.&nbsp;

Rohit and Ritika have a daughter Samaira who turns six on December 30. The exact time of birth is not known yet.

Team India players Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson extended their wishes to the parents. Speaking on BCCI.tv, the three of them congratulated Rohit, with Tilak saying he would soon meet the family.&nbsp;

Notably, Rohit did not travel with Team India to Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy that begins on November 22. It wasn't made clear whether he would be leading the team in the first Test match to be held in Perth.&nbsp;

Before the team left for Australia, India head coach Gautam Gambhir told reporters&nbsp;that there was still no official confirmation regarding Rohit's absence.

"At the moment there's no confirmation. Hopefully, he will be available. We'll let you know," Gambhir said at a press conference.

He did confirm that if Rohit misses the first Test match, vice-captain and fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah will lead the team.

This would also mean a chance for newcomer Abhimanyu Easwaran. "If Rohit is not available, we have got (Abhimanyu) Easwaran and KL (Rahul) in Australia. We will take a call," Gambhir said.&nbsp;

Rory McIlroy&nbsp;claimed a share of the first-round lead at the World Tour Championship in Dubai on Thursday as he closed in on equalling Seve Ballesteros' mark of six European Tour Order of Merit crowns.

McIlroy fired a 67 to stand on top of the leaderboard alongside&nbsp;Tyrrell Hatton.

The 35-year-old McIlroy started the season-ending event in Dubai with a healthy lead over South Africa's&nbsp;Thriston Lawrence who endured a nightmare day, signing for a one-over 73 which included five bogeys.

With 2,000 points on offer to the winner, McIlroy only needs a top-ten finish to secure the sixth Race to Dubai crown of his career, matching the tally of Ballesteros.

Playing partners Hatton and Paul Waring, who sealed the biggest victory of his career at last week's Abu Dhabi Championship, hit the front at four under after they each birdied the 14th hole, but the Northern Irishman followed suit shortly after.

Hatton became the first person to reach five under with a birdie at the penultimate hole, only to be matched by McIlroy's 48-foot putt at the same hole to share the lead with Englishman.

"I thought I played well. I hit the ball pretty well. I gave myself plenty of chances, plenty of looks," four-time major champion McIlroy said.

"I want to go on from here and win the golf tournament. I've opened up with a really good score, but I need to go out and play similarly over these next three days, not just to try to win the tournament, but also to try to get the job done in the Race to Dubai.

"I'm under no illusions that that was probably Thriston's worst day. If he goes out and has three good ones, I still need to go out there and play some very solid golf."

Hatton, 33, carded seven birdies and two dropped shots in his round.

Dubai-based Waring reached the turn in 32 before mixing a bogey and birdie on the back nine to sit alone in third at four under.

There are seven players at three under -- Billy Horschel, Matt Wallace, Adam Scott, Alex Fitzpatrick, Niklas Norgaard and Japanese duo Keita Nakajima and Rikuya Hoshino.

India and South Africa will face off in the fourth and final T20I at the Wanderers in Johannesburg. Following winning the thriller at the SuperSport Park in Centurion, India leads the&nbsp;four-match series 2-1 and&nbsp;have a chance to bag this should they win on Friday (Nov 15). Here is the match preview and result prediction of the fourth T20I between India and South Africa.

<h2>Match Preview</h2>

India cannot do anything wrong with this format. Having won 23 of the last 25 T20Is, they are in top-notch form, aiming to build on their credentials and take this T20I series home. Against Proteas in familiar territory, they lead them 2-1; while two players thus far – Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma have completed respective hundreds, while the lower-order is yet to fire.

Abhishek Sharma found form in the last game, while Ramandeep Singh’s debut added firepower to India’s all-rounders’ list in this format. Captain Suryakumar Yadav hasn’t had the best outings with the bat thus far but is spot-on with his captaincy in his first series as a full-time T20I skipper.

With the ground dimensions and history at the Wanderers suggesting it to be a batter’s paradise, the Indian bowlers have the best chance to make a name for themselves in this decider. While Arshdeep Singh has been India’s best bet in the pace attack, all eyes will be on the highest wicket-taker, Varun Chakaravarthy, who has picked ten wickets in three matches played.

On the other hand, the Proteas are upbeat to upset India in the final match in Johannesburg. Having come agonisingly close to pulling off a miraculous run chase in Centurion, thanks to a magnificent 17-ball 54 by Marco Jansen, the hosts are aware of their arsenal heading into the must-win game against India.

Captain Aiden Markram hasn’t clicked with the bat, but Proteas best batter Heinrich Klaasen has shown signs of returning to his imperious best. Ace batter David Miller could be vital for South Africa in the final game of the series.

Meanwhile, the bowling department has been a worry for the hosts, having failed to wrap up India’s innings even once in this series.

<h3>Match Prediction –</h3>

South Africa could be upbeat to make a comeback and win the decider but India’s form will keep them a notch ahead in the final T20I.

<h4>Predicted Playing XIs of both teams –</h4>

South Africa - Ryan Rickelton, Reeza Hendricks, Aiden Markram (captain), Tristan Stubbs, Heinrich Klaasen (wk), David Miller, Marco Jansen, Gerald Coetzee, Andile Simelane, Keshav Maharaj and Lutho Sipamla

India - Sanju Samson (wk), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Hardik Pandya, Rinku Singh, Ramandeep Singh, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Ravi Bishnoi and Varun Chakravarthy

SA vs IND 2024, 4th T20I: India eye first away series win under Suryakumar Yadav

England beat West Indies by three wickets in their T20 international in Saint Lucia on Thursday to take an insurmountable 3-0 lead in their five-match series. West Indies recovered from 37-5 to make 145-8 largely thanks to a solid 54 from skipper Rovman Powell but while England had some scares they won with four balls to spare.

Sam Curran top-scored with 41 for England, who can now enjoy the final two games of the series on the Caribbean island without any pressure.

After a rain-delayed start, none of the top five batsmen for the home side managed double figures with Saqib Mahmood picking up 3-17.

Shai Hope was run out off the fourth ball and fellow opener Evan Lewis went in the next over, slashing Mahmood to Jofra Archer at third man.

Nicholas Pooran was then bowled by Barbados-born Archer in the following over and Roston Chase edged Mahmood to Jamie Overton at slip as England dominated the powerplay.

Mahmood rounded off his excellent spell removing Shimron Hetmyer who holed out to Dan Mousely at deep mid-wicket.

But skipper Powell, supported well by Romario Shepherd led the Caribbean side's recovery, the pair putting on a 73-run partnership before Overton trapped Shepherd lbw for 30.

Overton dismissed Gudakesh Motie for a duck and got rid off Powell, who had struck four sixes in his41 ball knock,&nbsp; but Alzarri Joseph produce a useful 21 off 19 balls to help his team to a respectable score.

Although England found themselves 37-3 with left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein picking up the wickets of Phil Salt and skipper Jos Buttler, opener Will Jacks' 32 kept them on course and the middle order contributions of Curran and Liam Livingstone (39) saw the tourists towards the finish line.

Livingstone rode his luck somewhat, dropped three times but Buttler was delighted with his team's series win, singling out Mahmood and Curran for their roles.

"A real collective effort to win the series, we set the tone with the ball in every game. We are in a strong place, great competition for places, and it is nice to see the growth," he said. "We are delighted to win the series, in modern cricket it is easy not to put emphasis on bilateral series but it gives us lots of confidence to take forward. Got a hungry dressing-room," he said.

Powell felt his top-order had the main culpability for the loss.

"It is disappointing we keep losing wickets in the powerplay. Didn't come off tonight. We've got to be our natural selves but the element of being smart is missing," he said.

England claim T20I series against West Indies after Saqib Mahmood and Sam Curran’s heroics

Lee Carsley claimed England's 3-0 win against Greece showed the strength in depth that awaits Thomas Tuchel when he takes over as coach. England were hit by a rash of withdrawals before Thursday's Nations League clash in Athens, but Carsley's team made light of the star absences to keep alive their hopes of promotion to the tournament's top tier.

Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden and&nbsp;Trent Alexander-Arnold were among nine players to pull out of England's last two games of 2024 amid speculation they were encouraged by their club managers to miss the fixtures.

England captain Harry Kane launched a scathing attack on the stay-aways, insisting international duty should come before anything else. Kane was surprisingly dropped to the bench by interim boss Carsley after his uncharacteristic outburst, but England were unfazed.

Kane's replacement Ollie Watkins gave them an early lead before Greece goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos deflected Jude Bellingham's shot into his own net.

Curtis Jones' audacious back-flicked effort wrapped up a win that put England top of Nations League Group B2.

They are guaranteed to win promotion to League A with a victory over Ireland at Wembley on Sunday.

But Carsley was more concerned with underlining the vast array of quality that former Bayern Munich boss Tuchel will inherit when he finally takes the reins on January 1.

"It is just important the players play to their strengths. We have got a lot of outstanding talent," Carsley said. "The players who were not here, we concentrated on the ones that were.

"We spoke yesterday about players getting an opportunity, and we have seen that tonight.

"People were speaking about the inexperience within the squad, but these players play week in and week out in the Premier League at a really high level."

After losing to Greece for the first time ever at Wembley in October, this was a sweet moment for Carsley, who was widely criticised for a tactical gamble that backfired in that game.

<h2>'Moving in right direction'</h2>

Chelsea winger Noni Madueke caught the eye in Athens with an assist for Watkins' opener and several other incisive raids, while Jones and Anthony Gordon also impressed.

Assessing England's long-term prospects, Carsley was encouraged by the victory, which was his fourth in five games as caretaker boss since replacing Gareth Southgate, who quit following the Euro 2024 final loss to Spain.

"It represents we are moving in the right direction," Carsley said. "I see the quality that the players have got.

"You're now seeing it in terms of the younger ones, that they're more than capable with the mentality and the quality that they've got to play in stages like tonight.

"There's a lot of positives. Think about the two wide players, Anthony (Gordon) and Noni (Madueke), so attacking, so direct. Curtis was outstanding tonight."

Carsley confirmed Kane would start against Ireland but made a point of praising Aston Villa striker Watkins for stepping in for his skipper.

"It was brilliant for Ollie to get a goal. It's important that I think if we are going to put these players in a position where we are going to go and win the World Cup then these players need to have as many experiences as they can," he said.

"So, it was no slight on Harry. He'll start the next game and I think a lot of positives to take from that performance."

Asked about Kane's reaction to being left on the bench until the 66th minute, Carsley said: "He was absolutely fine. It would be fair to say he wants to play every game, like all top players do.

"I think he understands that it's important that other players experience that kind of experience that we had tonight.

"He's a great example to the rest of the players and I expect him to start on Sunday and play well."

Lee Carsley praises England’s squad depth after Greece win in Nations League

Italy ensured qualification for the Nations League quarter-finals with a victory over Belgium on Thursday that also guaranteed France a place in the last-eight despite a lacklustre display in a scoreless draw with Israel under tight security in Paris.

Lee Carsley, whose brief reign as England coach ends on Sunday, enjoyed an emphatic victory in Athens that put his team top of their pool on goal difference.

In Brussels, Italy were economical as they beat Belgium 1-0 in Group A2.&nbsp;

The visitors dominated the early stages and scored after 11 minutes. A cross from fullback Giovanni Di Lorenzo deflected into the path of Sandro Tonali for a tap in.

Belgian centre back Wout Faes hit a post with a second-half header.

"We showed again that we give it a go and don't just sit back in matches, that's the big change," Tonali told RAI.

At the Stade de France in Paris, tentative France struggled to create and take chances as they drew 0-0 with Israel before a crowd of just under 17,000 in a stadium that holds up to 80,000.

Around 4,000 police and members of the security forces patrolled inside and outside the ground to prevent a repetition of the attacks on fans of Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv in Amsterdam last week.

Stewards had to intervene at one point to stop fans of both nations from clashing in the stands, an AFP reporter saw.

Around 100 Israeli fans attended the match despite calls from Israeli authorities to stay away.

On the pitch, it took until the 20th minute for captain N'Golo Kante, jinking into the six-yard box, to force a first save from goalkeeper Daniel Peretz.

France managed 25 attempts on goal but Peretz had to make only two diving saves in the second half, first from Warren Zaire-Emery and then in added time from Christopher Nkunku.

"Anger. Frustration," said France fullback Jules Kounde when asked his immediate reaction by French broadcaster TF1. "The only good point from tonight is that qualification is assured."

Italy lead the group by three points but France could still take first when the teams meet in Milan on Sunday.

In Brussels, Italy were economical as they beat Belgium 1-0 in Group A2. "The only good point from tonight is that qualification is assured." Italy lead the group by three points but France could still take first when the teams meet in Milan on Sunday. "We could have done more but we did what we needed to do against an ultra-defensive opponent," France coach Didier Deschamps told TF1. Nations League: 40 arrests made at tense France-Israel game in Paris

Indian cricket veteran Sunil Gavaskar has pinpointed Rohit Sharma’s weakness, saying Rohit’s attacking style could put him in hot waters. Though the Indian skipper is a proven batter at the top, against Australia Down Under, he perhaps has to hold his horses to avoid getting into trouble.

Gavaskar, a Test veteran, says Rohit likes taking on the bowler up front, something he needs to avoid doing early into the innings against the Aussies. With Mitchell Starc taking the new ball, Gavaskar wants Rohit to avoid attacking him, explaining how a Kookaburra ball (after a certain point) aids batters Down Under, a place which he considers a batting paradise.

"At the start, he can be troubled by Mitchell Starc's lengths and lines,” Gavaskar said while speaking of Rohit during a chat on Star Sports. “What happens often with Rohit is that his foot doesn't move as much as it should in the first few overs of the contest, because of which he gets into trouble. But, if he can survive the first two or three overs, he can score runs. He needs to get the shot selection right. That's not just for Rohit Sharma but for any batter.”

Gavaskar stressed how playing the waiting game in foreign conditions works as a magic wand for touring batters, adding Rohit can pile tons of runs only by applying himself better.

“Like I said, Australian pitches are good for batters. And they use Kookaburra ball. It doesn't swing or seam much after the first 15 overs,” Gavaskar explained. “Test cricket is a five-day match. If you show some restraint in the first session, then you can score runs.”

<h2>Rohit’s status remains unknown</h2>

Contrary to constant speculations of Rohit missing the first Test against Australia for personal reasons, the BCCI and the team management have kept mum on the matter, leaving it to Rohit to decide on his participation. Though Rohit stayed in Mumbai to be with his wife, who is expecting their second child, the remainder of the BGT-bound Test squad has already reached Australia.

Should Rohit remain unavailable for selection for the Perth Test, KL Rahul will open alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal. The right-handed batter, however, suffered an elbow injury playing against India-A in a WACA simulation game on Friday (Nov 15). Rahul left the field immediately with discomfort, with the medical team attending him on the sidelines.&nbsp;

Also, in Rohit’s absence, ace seamer Jasprit Bumrah will lead India against Australia in the Perth Test.&nbsp;

Veteran New Zealand seamer Tim Southee has decided to hang his boots from Tests at the end of the home series against England. Southee, 35, is second to Richard Hadlee (431) in the wickets tally for the Kiwis in Tests, having picked 385 scalps from 104 matches and counting. Besides, the hosts named a potent 14-man squad for England Tests, naming star batter Kane Williamson on the list.

Should Southee get picked in the XI for all three Tests, his last game would come at his home ground in Hamilton – the venue for the third match.&nbsp;

The right-arm seamer, who made his Test debut against the same opponent as a 19-year-old in the Napier Test in 2008, is set to bring his career full circle by playing his last game against England. He, however, will make himself available for selection should New Zealand qualify for the WTC 2025 Final scheduled next year in June at the Lord’s.

Southee, who handed over the Test captaincy to Tom Latham ahead of the Asian tour, is yet to decide on his white-ball future.&nbsp;

“Representing New Zealand was all I ever dreamed of growing up," Southee said in his retirement announcement adding, “To play for the Black Caps for 18 years has been the greatest honour and privilege, but the time feels right to now step away from the game that has given so much to me."

“Test cricket holds a special place in my heart, so to be able to play such a big series against the same opponent my Test career began against all those years ago, and on three grounds that are incredibly special to me, seems the perfect way to end my time in the Black Cap,” he continued.

Sam Wells, the New Zealand selector, also acknowledged Southee’s decorated Test career, adding he still has some role to play in helping New Zealand qualify for the Test summit clash next year.&nbsp;

"It's obviously a big series for the side in terms of the World Test Championship, and to also now be farewelling someone like Tim Southee only raises it up further. Tim has had a fabulous career and will go down as one of the great Black Caps,” Sam said.

<h2>Williamson returns to Test side</h2>

Kane Williamson, who missed the marquee away Test series against India, which New Zealand won 3-0, creating history, has recovered from a groin injury and was named in the 14-man squad for England Tests.&nbsp;

While the hosts called up uncapped pair of seamer Jacob Duffy and all-rounder Nathan Smith, they included Mitchell Santner, who rocked India with his best Test figures in the Pune game earlier, for the second and third Tests against the Poms.&nbsp;

Christchurch will host the first game on November 28, while&nbsp;Wellington and Hamilton are venues for the remaining two Tests.
