KL Rahul's elbow injury rocks Indian camp as batters struggle against bounce in WACA match simulation

Israel face France in a Nations League match in Paris on Thursday that will be surrounded by a huge security operation following attacks on Israeli football fans in Amsterdam last week.

The Paris police chief has described the match at the Stade de France as "high risk" and Israel has urged fans to avoid the fixture, which authorities fear could become another flashpoint following the violence in the Netherlands.

Fans of Maccabi Tel Aviv were chased by men on scooters and beaten after a Europa League match against Ajax in Amsterdam on November 7.

Amsterdam's Mayor Femke Halsema called it a "poisonous cocktail" of anti-Semitism.

Dutch police said the violence came after Maccabi fans had set fire to a Palestinian flag the night before, and vandalised a taxi.

The mayor however stressed on Tuesday that "even though a more complete picture emerged" of the evening's events, "and all sorts of terrible things happened, it in no way negates that a 'hunt for Jews'" call had gone out.

The violence in Amsterdam took place with anti-Israeli sentiment and reported anti-Semitic acts across the world soaring as Israel wages wars against Iran-backed militants in Lebanon and Gaza, which have seen massive civilian casualties.

Several thousand people demonstrated in Paris on Wednesday evening against the holding of an "Israel is Forever" gala in the city, organised by far-right figures.

Protesters waved Palestinian flags and set off red flares, AFP photographs showed. Clashes broke out with police firing tear gas and some protesters damaged the window of a restaurant.

<h2>Thousands of police</h2>

A total of 4,000 police and members of the security forces will be stationed in Paris and around the Stade de France, where the athletics and rugby sevens events were held during this year's Olympics.

In a rare move, police will also be deployed inside the stadium. Civilian staff are normally assigned to those roles.

An elite police unit will guard the Israeli team on its journey to and from the stadium and another 1,600 civilian security personnel will also be on duty at the match.

The security context has clearly impacted the attendance, with only around 13,000 spectators expected to attend the game in a venue that holds up to 80,000, French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau said on Wednesday.

That is lower than the figure of 25,000 announced by Sports Minister Gil Averous earlier Wednesday.

"I can understand why people don't want to come," one of France's players, defender Dayot Upamecano, said. "It's their choice. We're going to battle on the pitch and win this match.

"I'm just here to play. I like peace and I hope one day we will have it again, in all countries," the Bayern Munich player said.

President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Michel Barnier will attend, as well as former presidents Francois Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy.

A handful of French lawmakers, including from the France Unbowed (LFI) party, have called for the match to be postponed or moved to another French city. Both suggestions were quickly shut down by the government.

The Belgian government took a different course when its national men's team was to face Israel in September. It decided to move the match to Hungary citing security concerns.

Macron will be present at the match "because there was strong emotion, especially after Amsterdam", said a member of the president's team, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"It is important to show support, to also say that we will not give in to fears.

"I know that there have been controversies and misunderstandings. But for us, there is no doubt about the involvement of the president in the fight against anti-Semitism."

On the pitch, France are attempting to secure a place in the Nations League quarter-finals. They only need a draw to do so.

Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe is missing from the France squad as he was for two matches last month.

Nations League: Israel-France face off under tight security following Amsterdam riots

Victor Wembanyama became the fourth-youngest player to score 50 points in an NBA game when the 20-year-old Frenchman led the San Antonio Spurs to a 139-130 win over the Washington Wizards on Wednesday.

The first overall pick in last year's draft rattled up his career-high 50 points in just 26 minutes and ended the game with 18-29 shooting with eight three-pointers -- also a career high.

The Spurs center, whose previous highest-scoring game was 40, was at a loss to explain his incredible performance.

"I'd love to tell you that you wake up a certain way or you feel really smooth during warm-ups, but at the end of the day, in NBA games we got one game every other day," he said. "So, every time we struggle to warm up, we have pain, you know, we sweat, we bleed on the court, so it's really a minute-to-minute thing, it comes to 48 minutes every game," he added.

It was the third straight game in which Wembanyama had hit six-plus three-pointers.

The three players who scored 50 points at a younger age than the Frenchman were Brandon Jennings, LeBron James and Devin Booker, all of whom were also aged 20.

The Spurs again won the game without head coach Gregg Popovich. The team said on Wednesday that he had suffered a mild stroke earlier this month but is expected to make a full recovery.

Wembanyama wasn't the only player to break the 50-point mark on Wednesday. Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 59 as the Milwaukee Bucks beat the Detroit Pistons 127-120 in overtime.

The Greek star shot 21 of 34 and had 14 rebounds and seven assists in what was the highest point performance by a player so far this season.

"As a leader I keep reminding guys, don't take moments for granted. No matter who plays we don't give up and always have to find ways to win the game," said Antetokounmpo.

<h2>Cavs roll on</h2>

The unbeaten Cleveland Cavaliers made it 13 straight wins in the NBA with a 114-106 victory at the Philadelphia 76ers.

With the win the Cavs became just the sixth team to start a season with a 13-0 record and the first since the Golden State Warriors in the 2015-16 season.

Darius Garland top-scored for Cleveland with 25 points while Donovan Mitchell put up 23 points along with nine assists and 13 rebounds.

Mitchell ended the game on fire, scoring 11 points in a 1:35 spell in the fourth quarter.

Cleveland trailed 54-48 at the half but turned it on in the third quarter. Yet it was a tight game until Mitchell made a 29-foot three-pointer with 2:52 remaining to open up a seven-point lead.

Mitchell conceded that the 13th game in 22 days had been a battle.

"We all fought. Biggest thing is, obviously, we played a lot of games and it's going to test you.

"The streak is going to test you. These games are going to test you.

"We kept pushing, just continued to fight, continued to battle and we all did a great job," he said.

Philadelphia's injury-plagued star center Joel Embiid, who made his first appearance of the season on Tuesday after nine games out with a knee issue, sat out the game and the 76ers were also without Paul George.

Rookie Jared McCain stepped up with 34 points for Philadelphia, who are 2-9 on the season.

The Boston Celtics continued their strong start to the season. Their 139-114 win at the Brooklyn Nets extended their record to 10-3.

Jayson Tatum put up 36 points, made 10 assists and grabbed eight rebounds as the reigning champion Celtics enjoyed a convincing victory.

After a defeat to Atlanta in the NBA Cup on Tuesday, the Celtics trailed by two after the first quarter but grabbed a five-point lead by the half and dominated from then on.

It was a strong all-round display from Boston with Jaylen Brown producing 24 points and 12 rebounds while Payton Pritchard claimed 23 points and had eight assists and six rebounds.

NBA: Victor Wembanyama becomes fourth-youngest to score 50 points in Spurs' win over Washington

Claudio Ranieri took charge of his hometown team Roma on Thursday, coming out of retirement to become the Serie A club's third coach of a troubled season. Roma said that Ranieri, who won the Premier League title with Leicester City in 2016, has signed a deal until the end of the season.

The 73-year-old will then "transition into a senior executive role, where he will be an adviser to the ownership on all sporting matters at the club".

"The search for a future coach will proceed over the next months. Claudio will have input in that decision as well," added Roma.

Ranieri agreed to coach Roma for the third time following negotiations in London on Wednesday, after which he was mobbed by fans at Rome's Fiumicino airport.

He replaces Ivan Juric, who was hired in September following the dismissal of former club captain Daniele De Rossi, but was sacked after Sunday's 3-2 home defeat at the hands of Bologna.

Juric's short spell in charge was a disaster, with four wins from 12 matches in all competitions, and the former Croatia international left Roma 12th in Serie A, just four points above the relegation zone.

Ranieri announced the end of his club management career after guiding Cagliari to safety last season.

He told Sky in Italy at the time that he would be interested in a national team job but he has made a comeback to help dig Roma out of a deep crisis.

Ranieri returns to lead Roma out of a crisis for the second time after replacing the sacked Eusebio Di Francesco in March 2019 and helping to secure Europa League qualification.

But he is held in great affection by his fellow Roma fans primarily for his first spell in charge which began a decade before.

He took over from Luciano Spalletti early in the 2009-10 season and led Roma on a thrilling league title challenge with Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan which went to the last day of the campaign.

Ranieri has a baptism of fire as his team travel to Napoli after the international break before then facing Tottenham Hotspur in London and Atalanta at home.

Serie A: Claudio Ranieri comes out of retirement to coach hometown club AS Roma

Australian opener Usman Khawaja feels Jasprit Bumrah’s awkward action makes him lethal but warns his side about India having plenty in their pace battery to offer than just him. With the first BGT Test starting in Perth in less than 10 days, Khawaja talked about how, at first, it’s difficult to face Bumrah, but with time of getting used to facing him, it mellows down, though the threat remains always.

Bumrah is perhaps the best bowler across formats, and with him leading the pace attack this time Down Under, he’d again be a thorn in the flesh for the Aussies.

"I mean, when you first face him, it's just his action. It's a different, bizarre kind of action as his release point is very different than other bowlers," Khawaja said of Bumrah on Fox Cricket, who has bowled 155 deliveries to the Aussie batter across seven Test innings but never dismissed him.&nbsp;

"It's just a bit further up. So, a lot of guys release the ball from near the popping crease. [Against Bumrah] It feels like he gets a bit further out just with his front-braced leg and pushes the ball out."

"So, it feels like it comes out and then gets there a lot quicker than you expect it. It's just once you get used to the action, it's fine. I played against him a lot. Not to say that he can't give me out first ball. I mean anyone can. But it's one of those things where once, the first time you face him, it's very awkward, and then when you get a little bit of rhythm, it gets better. But he's still a class bowler,” Khawaja continued.

<h2>Khawaja praises India’s pace battery</h2>

Even though India will be without its most experienced seamer, Mohammed Shami, in this Test series, they still have Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna and uncapped Harshit Rana to divide the workload alongside Bumrah. Praising Indian quicks, Khawaja said, "Everyone talks about Jasprit, but they actually have a lot of other good bowlers."

"I think [Mohammed] Siraj is a very good bowler. He's a very good bowler to both right-handers and left-handers. When [Mohammed] Shami was fit, when he was playing those series, he was a very good bowler. He was very underrated. No one really talked about him. And then they got good spinners lining up, too, which really complements their fast bowlers."

Explaining his thought process while facing Bumrah, Khawaja said instead of thinking about how to not get out to him, he’d look for ways to score runs against him. &nbsp;

"So for me, it's never ... I'm just not thinking about Jasprit Bumrah. You want to ask me where do you think... I'm not thinking about where he is getting me out. I'm thinking about where am I scoring runs against him,” he concluded.&nbsp;

Khawaja will open with debutant Nathan McSweeney in the Perth Test against India.&nbsp;

Australian opener Usman Khawaja feels Jasprit Bumrah’s awkward action makes him lethal but warns his side about India having plenty in their pace battery to offer than just him.

ALSO READ: Glenn Maxwell goes big at Gabba as Australia crush Pakistan in 1st T20I "I mean, when you first face him, it's just his action. It's a different, bizarre kind of action as his release point is very different than other bowlers," Khawaja said of Bumrah on Fox Cricket, who has bowled 155 deliveries to the Aussie batter across seven Test innings but never dismissed him. "It's just a bit further up. So, a lot of guys release the ball from near the popping crease. [Against Bumrah] It feels like he gets a bit further out just with his front-braced leg and pushes the ball out." "So, it feels like it comes out and then gets there a lot quicker than you expect it. BGT 2024/25: ‘India’s pace attack is lot more than just Jasprit Bumrah,’ says Usman Khawaja

Glenn Maxwell starred for Australia in the first T20I against Pakistan at the Gabba in Brisbane, hitting a blistering 19-ball 43. Batting first in the game that got reduced to seven overs per side due to rain interruption, Australia scored 93 for four, with ‘Big Show’ Maxwell whacking all bowlers, including Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah, reverse sweeping for boundaries. Marcus Stoinis’ last-over heroics (21* off seven balls) propelled Australia to a massive first-innings total.

Glenn Maxwell goes big at Gabba as Australia crush Pakistan in 1st T20I

Pakistan's new ODI and T20I captain Mohammad Rizwan broke his silence on Team India’s Champions Trophy 2025 travel stance. As the BCCI confirmed denying sending Men in Blue across the border for the eight-team tournament scheduled for February-March early next year, the PCB referred the matter to the Pakistan government. Though the host board has sought ICC’s advice on the same, reports from Pakistan suggest they are mulling boycotting playing India at all levels.

Currently involved in the bilateral series against Australia Down Under, Rizwan addressed this matter ahead of the 1st T20I at the Gabba in Brisbane, saying the PCB will take the final call on this matter, adding should the BCCI decide to send the Indian Team to Pakistan, we will welcome them with open arms.

“KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav are all welcome. All the players who will come, we will welcome them. This is not our decision, this is PCB’s decision,” Rizwan said in the pre-match presser. “Whatever decision will take place, hopefully, they will all discuss and take the right call. But we are hopeful that if the Indian players will come, we will welcome them,” he continued.

On the other hand, veteran Pakistan keeper-batter Rashid Latif shared contrasting views on it, saying Pakistan should boycott playing India, adding had he been in power, he would have taken this bold step.&nbsp;

“There’s a big possibility that Pakistan can stop playing cricket against India. Had I been in power, then, yes, I may have taken this strong step. I would not blame anyone for this. If you don’t want to play (in Pakistan), then don’t play against us (at all). If I had been there, I would have taken this decision, and fought against the BCCI,” Latif said while speaking on PTI Videos.

<h2>The Champions Trophy 2025 situation</h2>

The PCB, ICC and Champions Trophy 2025 future are all in the fix relating to this situation, with the Pakistan government informing PCB of this event not going out of the country irrespective of the rumours of Dubai, Sri Lanka or even South Africa being considered as alternatives.

“We have been told by our government not to move any game out of Pakistan, and that will be our stand when the time comes. Right now, the ICC has just informed us about India’s decision. We have the hosting rights for the Champions Trophy so there is no way we can move the games outside Pakistan,” a PCB official said on condition of anonymity, as quoted by the Indian Express.

Despite Shami’s clinical performance in his return game, his participation in the forthcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy remains uncertain. At the time when the BCCI named the 18-man squad for the marquee Australia Tests, Shami, who in the lead-up to the announcement declared himself 100% match-fit, having bowled full throttle following the first two Tests against New Zealand, failed to make the cut due to fitness concerns.&nbsp;

Following the conclusion of the final Test in Mumbai, Rohit addressed Shami’s absence from the BGT squad, claiming everyone concerned took a collective call as they didn’t want to have an under-cooked Shami for five Tests Down Under.

Meanwhile, should Shami attain full match fitness in the two Ranji matches he is scheduled to play in, chances of him linking up with the India Test squad for the Australia series could rise; however, neither the board nor the management has hinted about it.&nbsp;

Shami wasn’t India’s first-choice seamer for the opening few games in the home World Cup last year but got included in the playing XI following an injury to all-rounder Hardik Pandya in the Bangladesh tie.&nbsp;

The right-arm seamer played the New Zealand tie and wreaked havoc till the end, picking 24 wickets from seven contested matches, including a seven-wicket haul against the Kiwis in the semis in Mumbai. Though he removed David Warner on the second ball in the final, Shami failed to guide his team across the winning line.

That, however, was his last on-field appearance as an ankle injury ruled him out for the next 10-12 months.&nbsp;

Misery continues to pile on Premier League referee David Coote, who was suspended over derogatory remarks about former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. With FA and PGMOL investigating whether Coote's reference to Klopp's nationality constitutes an aggravated breach of its misconduct rule, the latest controversy strikes the 42-year-old.&nbsp;

A viral video doing rounds of social media shows a man, alleged to be Coote, using a US dollar bank note to snort a line of white powder. Coote recorded the video himself snorting the white powder to send to a friend on July 6 - a day after he was part of the VAR officials for the quarters clash between Spain and Germany.

David’s welfare continues to be of utmost importance to us, and we are committed to providing him with the ongoing necessary support he needs through this period", a PGMOL spokesperson said.

Earlier in the week, the UEFA shared a statement on Coote saying, "The UEFA Referees Committee immediately suspended David Coote until further notice on 11 November - in advance of the upcoming round of UEFA matches - when it became aware of his inappropriate behaviour."

<h2>Coote’s ‘rough’ relationship with Liverpool</h2>

Coote, who lately officiated in Liverpool’s game against Aston Villa, which they won 2-0, used offensive and abusive language against Klopp, who left Anfield following the conclusion of the previous season.&nbsp;

The video that put Coote in hot waters referred to a game between Liverpool and Burnley in July 2020; Liverpool had won the Premier League title by then – their first.

Meanwhile, Klopp also criticized Coote after that match, expressing reservations over his lenient treatment of Burnley's challenges in the game that ended 1-1.&nbsp;

Besides, the ex-Liverpool manager also disapproved of one of Coote’s decisions during the game against Arsenal last season, when Martin Odegaard’s hand made contact with the ball, and Coote, on VAR duty, decided against advising on-field officials to review the incident.

For India, Varun Chakaravarthy picked five wickets. South Africa won the toss and elected to bowl first in Gqeberha, making the most of the conditions upfront by removing the last-game hero Sanju Samson on a second-ball duck. Gerald Coetzee removed Abhishek Sharma in the second over, with Captain Suryakumar Yadav falling shortly after on four. Tilak Varma and Axar Patel steadied the ship with a 30-run stand but failed to prolong it further, as Proteas skipper Aiden Markram provided the breakthrough to reduce India to 45 for four inside eight overs. Ruud van Nistelrooy leaves Manchester United after Ruben Amorim joins as new manager

Pakistan interim head coach Jason Gillespie is surprised with Cricket Australia’s promotional priorities regarding the just concluded ODI series against the Men in Green, which the visitors won for the record second time. While Pakistan’s series win Down Under came after 22 years, a monumental feat for an Asian Team, the hosts seemed to care the least about this one, baffling Gillespie, the country’s one of greatest Test bowlers.

Shortly after the conclusion of the third ODI in Perth, which Pakistan won by eight wickets, and with that, the three-match series 2-1, Gillespie said Cricket Australia’s priority remains the marquee Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India starting with the first Test in Perth on November 22.

"To be honest, I pretty much saw no promotion of our one-day series by Cricket Australia, which was a bit of a surprise. It's pretty obvious that they're prioritizing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series against India because I saw no promotion of this series," Gillespie said, quoted by the Sydney Morning Herald.

While Australia won the first One-Dayer at the MCG with two wickets remaining, Pakistan returned stronger to claim the Adelaide ODI before winning the final one at the Optus Stadium to clinch their second ODI series Down Under, only the second team after South Africa to do it twice.

This series win is also the first under newly-appointed white-ball skipper Mohammad Rizwan.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the action resumes with the three-match T20Is starting at the Gabba in Brisbane on Thursday (Nov 14).

<h2>Team India to reach Australian shores</h2>

While several Test-bound players, including KL Rahul, Dhruv Jurel and three reserve players are already in Australia, having participated in the two contested unofficial Tests against Australia A, the remaining squad members will land on the Aussie shores sooner.&nbsp;

Earlier, the BCCI cancelled the intra-squad match between India A and India, scheduled at the WACA in Perth, with the decision-makers opting for the training sessions at the centre wicket. After India’s three-day stint at the WACA, the Australia Test squad will arrive at the venue to practice at the centre wicket and get acclimatised to the conditions.&nbsp;

Moreover, from the Indian camp, uncertainties surround captain Rohit Sharma’s participation in the Perth Test, with India head coach Gautam Gambhir confirming should Rohit remains unavailable for selection for the first game, KL Rahul will open alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal. In that case, ace seamer Jasprit Bumrah will captain the side in the first game.&nbsp;

Norway's Casper Ruud eased to a straight-sets victory over Carlos Alcaraz on Monday as the Spanish star's bid for a maiden ATP Finals title got off to a poor start.

Ruud romped through the opening set before fighting back from 5-2 behind in the second to win 6-1, 7-5 in Turin.

World number three Alcaraz, who won the French Open and Wimbledon titles earlier this year, made 34 unforced errors in an uncharacteristically errant display.

It was Ruud's first victory over Alcaraz in their five career meetings.

"I had two good times in Turin before... This part of the season has not been good for me but hopefully I've saved some wins for this week and I've started well," said 2022 runner-up Ruud, who had suffered seven defeats in eight matches before this tournament.

Ruud will head into his second match in the John Newcombe group against Andrey Rublev on Wednesday already well-placed to reach the semi-finals for the third time in as many appearances at the year-end event.

Alcaraz could be eliminated if he loses to second-ranked Alexander Zverev, who faces Rublev in his opener later on Monday.

Third seed Alcaraz quickly slipped 4-1 down, giving up his serve in the fourth game before seeing three break points come and go in the next.

Ruud stretched a double-break in front as Alcaraz fired a loose forehand wide and wrapped up the opening set in just 36 minutes with a hold to love.

The four-time Grand Slam champion improved early in the second set, though, bringing up his sixth break point of the match with a trademark forehand winner.

He took the opportunity with a delicate volley and then moved into a 5-2 lead with a clinical hold.

But Ruud dug deep to force Alcaraz to serve for the set before breaking back en route to levelling the set.

The errors suddenly started to flow again from Alcaraz's racquet and a wild forehand followed by an excellent Ruud return gave the sixth seed the chance to serve for the match.

Ruud closed it out in style on his third match point with an ace, completing a run of five straight games.

Star Indian batter KL Rahul broke his silence since parting ways with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) ahead of IPL 2025. With LSG deciding against retaining their captain, Rahul will now enter the IPL 2025 mega auction among the marquee-capped Indian players, seeking opportunities to play elsewhere, where he could find the freedom to express himself and a lighter team atmosphere.

Lucknow picked Rahul in the IPL 2022 mega auction, appointing him the captain for the next three years. Under his leadership, LSG reached the playoffs in the first season&nbsp;but failed to put their hands on the trophy. The right-handed batter amassed 616 runs in his first season as LSG captain; Rahul scored 274 in the next, playing just nine games and 520 in the previous edition, striking at over 135.

Though on merit, Rahul was LSG’s best bet throughout the three editions, but his underwhelming strike rate as an opener and inability to pace the innings saw his team struggle to cross the winning line.&nbsp;

Besides, following the away game against SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) last season, where his team lost the match by ten wickets, LSG owner Sanjeev Goenka was recorded scolding Rahul publicly, and that particular episode is said to have worsened relations between the two, leading to fallout.

Ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction scheduled for November 24 and 25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Rahul shared details of why he left LSG and his plans ahead with the new season approaching.

"I wanted to start fresh, I wanted to explore my options, and I wanted to go and play where I could find some freedom. Team atmosphere would be lighter; sometimes you just need to move away and find something good for yourself, and I have been out of the T20 team for a while," Rahul said in a chat with Star Sports.

<h2>‘Rahul’s aim’</h2>

KL could be a standout performer in the One-Dayers for a long time, with his credentials speaking for himself, but he was left out of India’s T20I squad two years ago. With the new season providing another opportunity for him to succeed and prove his mettle in the shortest format, Rahul discloses his aim.&nbsp;

"I know where I stand as a player, and I know what I need to do to get back. I look forward to this IPL season to give me that platform to go back and enjoy my cricket. My aim is obviously to get back into the T20 team," KL added.

Meanwhile, Rahul is in Australia for the marquee Border-Gavaskar Trophy, starting with the first Test in Perth on November 22. Rahul, alongside BGT-bound squad member Dhruv Jurel, flew Down Under earlier to feature in the second unofficial Test against Australia A at the MCG.

Dhruv impressed everyone with twin fifties in the game that India A lost, but Rahul failed to deliver as an opener across both innings, registering four and 10.&nbsp;

Besides, should India captain Rohit Sharma declare himself unavailable for selection for the first Test, KL will open alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed in a media statement on Monday (Nov. 11).&nbsp;

A former football chief in Turkey's Super Lig was sentenced to more than three years in prison Monday over an on-pitch attack on a referee, the Anadolu news agency reported. The incident occurred in December 2023 following a 1-1 draw between Ankara's MKA Ankaragucu and visiting Caykur Rizespor in Turkey's top flight.

Footage from the scene showed Ankaragucu's then president Faruk Koca rushing onto the pitch and punching referee Halil Umut Meler after he blew the final whistle, shouting: "I'm going to kill you!"

He appeared to be incensed over the ref's decision to send off one of his players, and disallowing an earlier goal by Ankaragucu. Caykur had scored an equaliser in injury time.

Denouncing the attack as "despicable", the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) suspended Super Lig matches for eight days and initiated criminal proceedings against Koca and several others.

Several days later, Koca apologised and resigned as club president but insisted his team had been cheated by the referee.

The court on Monday handed him three years and seven months for "intentional injury to a public sports official" as well as six months and 20 days for "making threats".

It also handed him a five-month suspended sentence for "violating the law on violence prevention in sports".

During the incident, the referee -- who fell to the ground after being punched -- was also kicked several times by other club officials, leaving him with a head trauma.

The court also handed prison sentences to three other officials for causing, or trying to cause, "intentional injury" to a public sports official, with sentences ranging from one to five years behind bars.

The incident provoked uproar in Turkey and a flurry of condemnation, including from FIFA, football's world governing body.

Ex-Turkey football club chief sentenced over on-field attack on referee

Barcelona star forwards Robert Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal have picked up injuries which have ruled them out of the international break, the La Liga leaders said Monday.

Lewandowski suffered a back injury in Sunday's 1-0 defeat at Real Sociedad during which he had a goal controversially disallowed.

"Lewandowski is having trouble in the lumbar region of his back, and will be rested for about 10 days," Barcelona said in a statement.

The 36-year-old will miss Poland's upcoming Nations League games against Portugal and Scotland, but should be back for Barcelona's next league outing at Celta Vigo on November 23.

Yamal missed Sunday's game in San Sebastian with a right ankle injury and is expected to be out of action for between two and three weeks, the club said.

The 17-year-old will miss Spain's matches on Thursday in Denmark and next Monday against Switzerland, and Barca's trip to Vigo.

He is also a doubt for the home Champions League game against Brest on November 26 and the following La Liga meeting with Las Palmas.

Yamal has scored six goals in his 15 games this season, while Lewandowski has 17 in all competitions and is currently the top goalscorer in La Liga.

Barcelona are sixth in the Champions League with nine points.

ALSO READ: Kansas City Chiefs stay unbeaten with thrilling win over Denver Broncos after field goal drama "Lewandowski is having trouble in the lumbar region of his back, and will be rested for about 10 days," Barcelona said in a statement. The Catalans are six points ahead of Real Madrid in La Liga but have played a game more than their title rivals. Veteran England seamer James Anderson registered his name for the first time in the IPL auction, with his base price being INR 1.25 crore. Having announced retirement from cricket following a decorated two-decade-plus career, Anderson harbours hopes of playing franchise cricket, saying he still has some cricket left in him. Anderson’s former captain, Michael Vaughan, has predicted which team the Test great could be playing for next season.

With the IPL 2025 mega auction just around the corner, scheduled for November 24 and 25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, all eyes would be on Anderson, 42, among the oldest players to register their name in the auction.

Although all 10 teams would either try retaining their core and go for top Indian capped players, with Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer likely to make headlines for their respective bids, Vaughan said he will not be surprised to see Anderson playing at Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2025.

“You mention James Anderson; I would not be surprised if Jimmy Anderson ends up at Chennai Super Kings. You heard it here first. They are a team that like someone who can swing it in the first few overs.”

“They have always had a swinger, whether it is Shardul Thakur or someone else. It would not surprise me if Jimmy Anderson ends up at Chennai,” Vaughan said on the Club Prairie Fire podcast alongside co-host Adam Gilchrist.

While CSK has the reputation of chasing experienced players regardless of the age factor, going after Anderson, who remains lethal with the new ball across conditions, might work in CSK’s favour.&nbsp;

However, the chances of Anderson remaining unsold at the mega auction could also be possible, given the age factor.

A total of 1547 players have registered for 204 slots available to be filled, with each franchise allowed to bag a maximum of 25 players. While 1165 are Indian players, 409 overseas cricketers have registered for the auction, 52 of which are English.&nbsp;

Alongside Anderson, premier pacer Jofra Archer has also registered his name while England Test captain and star all-rounder Ben Stokes decided against putting his name forward for the next season to manage his fitness and workload, given the tight Test schedule that follows.&nbsp;

Former Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez says he is waiting for a strong and surprise response from the government and the PCB on Team India’s travel stance on Champions Trophy 2025. A day after the ICC informed Pakistan of BCCI’s final decision not to send their team across the border for the eight-team tournament, citing security concerns, Hafeez took to social media to share his thoughts.

Hafeez wrote on X that it was a daydream to think that India would travel to Pakistan for the coveted tournament, adding that Pakistan is a ‘safe’ country to visit and play cricket in.&nbsp;

Hafeez continued by saying despite Pakistan hosting every country since cricket resumed following a decade-long ban over a terrorist attack on the touring Sri Lankan Team in 2009, for a certain someone, the country remains unsafe.

Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr scored a hat-trick to help the La Liga champions snap a two-game winless run in all competitions with a commanding 4-0 victory over Osasuna on Saturday. Following shock defeats by Barcelona and AC Milan, their first back-to-back home losses in over three years, Real suffered two major early blows against Osasuna as forward Rodrygo and defender Eder Militao were both forced off injured.

Manager Carlo Ancelotti brought Morocco forward Brahim Diaz and 21-year-old academy defender Raul Asencio off the bench and his side kept calm led by a brilliant performance from Vinicius.

The Brazilian forward opened the scoring in the 34th minute after taking a Jude Bellingham pass in his stride to beat the offside trap and firing an unstoppable strike past goalkeeper Sergio Herrera.

Bellingham recovered his scoring instinct by netting his first goal of the season with a brilliant finish eight minutes later, lobbing the ball over the goalkeeper to extend Real's lead.

Real's stand-in right back Lucas Vazquez was also forced off but Vinicius extended the lead with a great goal in the 61st minute, running on to a long pass from his goalkeeper Andriy Lunin before rounding Herrera and tapping into the empty net.

Eight minutes later, Diaz stole the ball from a distracted defender on the edge of the box and put it on a plate for Vinicius to fire home and wrap up a comprehensive win with his second hat-trick in four games.

Vinicius is now second in LaLiga's top-scorer race with eight goals in 12 games, six behind Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski.

Second-placed Real climbed to 27 points, six behind leaders Barcelona. Osasuna are fifth on 21 points.

"I don't want to touch this subject (the injuries), because it hurts me to see colleagues crying... It breaks my heart..." Diaz, who missed over six weeks this season with a thigh injury, told Real Madrid TV.

"We won convincingly," Diaz added. "We played a complete game, with hard work and effort. The victory was needed. Now we have to continue at this high level, because we have talent."

La Liga: Vinicius hits hat-trick against Osasuna but Real Madrid lose Rodrygo and Militao to injuries

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes scored one goal and created two more in his team's spirited 3-0 Premier League victory over Leicester City on Sunday, a victorious send-off for Ruud van Nistelrooy in his finale as interim manager.

United, who have had three wins and a draw across all competitions since manager Erik ten Hag was fired on Oct. 28 and replaced temporarily with Van Nistelrooy, are 13th in the league table on 15 points, four points adrift of the top three. Leicester are 15th on 10 points.

Fernandes, who went his last 17 games under Ten Hag without scoring, celebrated his 250th appearance for United with a goal in the 17th minute, latching on to a back-heel pass from Amad Diallo before unleashing a low hard shot into the far corner. It was the skipper's fourth goal in four games for Van Nistelrooy.

"It was a long time that I wasn't scoring and now goals are coming in the last few games," Fernandes said. "Another clean sheet was important for us to bring back the fortress we had here. We have to keep doing that and we have to improve."

Leicester defender Victor Kristiansen was credited with United's goal in the 38th minute when Fernandes missed an intended header of Noussair Mazraoui's cross but the ball pinged off his thigh before deflecting off Kristiansen and in.

Alejandro Garnacho netted United's third in the 82nd minute when Fernandes spotted him on the left and the Argentinian sent a curling shot from just outside the 18-yard box into the top corner. The 20-year-old looked emotionless after bagging his third league goal of the season.

"Garnacho scored a banger but didn't celebrate like he should because he thinks he has lost faith from some fans," Fernandes said. "I told him people will always moan but lots of people like you and enjoy what you do.

"I told him to celebrate, it was something special. He is a special player, we have difference makers. They are the ones who win us games."

Fans at Old Trafford sang Van Nistelrooy's name throughout the game's final few minutes.

Ten Hag's permanent replacement Ruben Amorim arrives on Monday from Sporting, with his first game as United boss scheduled for Nov. 24 at Ipswich Town. Van Nistelrooy's future with United is still to be determined although the team's former striker has said he wants to remain on staff.

"I absolutely believe this club has all the ingredients to get back to the levels I knew as a player," Van Nistelrooy wrote in Sunday's game programme. "From tomorrow, I will be getting behind our new head coach, Ruben Amorim, and I urge everyone who loves the club to do the same."

Fernandes had kind words for the interim boss.

"Ruud van Nistelrooy feels the club, he loves the club, he wants to bring joy to the players," he said. "He brought everyone with a smile to the games, he just wanted us to enjoy it. We wanted to say goodbye as a manager for him properly because he did good things for us.

"It's a new era, a new manager means everything changes but what hasn't changed is that this club has to get back to where it belongs."

Sunday's game deteriorated along with the weather in the second half, although Jordan Ayew had an excellent chance for the visitors when he smashed a shot at the near post which was tipped wide for a corner.

"It was a fairly even game in general play but in decisive moments we didn't defend well enough," Leicester manager Steve Cooper said. "We had good phases in the game but you have to be productive at both ends of the pitch.

"We weren't the threat we are capable of being, we fell short."

United have lost just two of the last 18 Premier League games against the Foxes.

PL: Manchester United beat Leicester City in Ruud van Nistelrooy’s last game as interim manager

The ICC officially wrote to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Sunday (Nov 11), informing them of BCCI’s stance of not sending the Indian Team across the border for the Champions Trophy 2025, scheduled for early next year. The Indian Cricket Board informed the ICC of sticking to their final call to not send their team to Pakistan for the eight-team tournament, with the PCB referring the matter to the Pakistan government.

In response to the Indian government and BCCI’s stern stance, the PCB mulls boycotting playing India at all levels worldwide.

Due to tense political relations, India and Pakistan haven’t played&nbsp;any bilateral games&nbsp;since 2012/13, when Pakistan last visited India for a white-ball series. The two Asian giants, however, have faced off in ICC events and the Asia Cup tournaments since.&nbsp;

Even last year, when Pakistan was supposed to host the six-team Asia Cup, the BCCI decided against sending the team for the coveted tournament; as a result, Sri Lanka got added as the last-minute co-host, staging all India games, including the final, which the Men in Blue won by 10 wickets.

While the BCCI insisted on bringing in a neutral venue to host all India matches, reports from Pakistan suggest that the PCB is unwilling to agree to the hybrid model; in their response, the PCB is preparing to boycott playing India across tournaments irrespective of FTP commitments.

"I discussed this with them and my team, and our stance is clear: they need to give us in writing any objections they may have. Until now, no discussion of the hybrid model has happened, nor are we prepared to accept one. The Indian media are reporting it, but no formal communication has reached the PCB," board chairman Naqvi said on Friday.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, reputed Pakistan cricket journalist and expert Nauman Niaz took to social media (X) to inform everyone of the latest developments.&nbsp;

"ICC conveys in writing to PCB that India isn't travelling to Pakistan to participate in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Reliable sources&nbsp;reveal PCB has referred it to the Government of Pakistan. PCB is unrelenting &amp; unsparing not to agree on the hybrid model, also in the process to decide not to play against India at any level across any format anywhere in the world," Nauman wrote on X.

Although neither board has made official statements on this, the PCB is expected to release its response to BCCI’s decision and the Champions Trophy 2025 future, with the tournament's schedule announcement date nearing.&nbsp;

Should the PCB and ICC decide against accepting BCCI’s call, they could scrap India from the tournament and add the next-ranked side in their place, the chances of which are bleak.&nbsp;

ALSO READ: Ayub, Rauf star in Perth One-Dayer as Pakistan create history with second ODI series win in Australia Even last year, when Pakistan was supposed to host the six-team Asia Cup, the BCCI decided against sending the team for the coveted tournament; as a result, Sri Lanka got added as the last-minute co-host, staging all India games, including the final, which the Men in Blue won by 10 wickets. "ICC conveys in writing to PCB that India isn't travelling to Pakistan to participate in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Reliable sources reveal PCB has referred it to the Government of Pakistan. ICC informs Pakistan of no India presence at Champions Trophy; PCB to boycott playing Men in Blue in response

Ace Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin reflected on Team India’s home series loss to New Zealand, calling it a shattering experience. Ashwin, 38, failed to live up to his hype playing at home, picking just nine wickets across six innings in three matches, averaging a worrying 41.22. With the bat in hand, he scored just 51 runs.&nbsp;

As the Kiwis blanked India 3-0, breaking their 12-year-long winning streak at home, Ashwin admitted not knowing how to react after the shocking outcome.

New Zealand first won the Bengaluru Test, completing their only third Test win in India and their first in 36 years before taking the series home in the next match in Pune. With their maiden Test series whitewash over India on the line, the New Zealand Team outplayed the hosts in the final Test in Mumbai to take the series home.

Speaking on his YouTube channel almost a week later, Ashwin said he was disappointed and hurt with the result and didn’t know how to respond to it for the next 2-3 days.

“I don’t know how to respond and react to this series loss,” Ashwin said about India’s 0-3 loss against New Zealand at home.&nbsp;

“I know that in my career and in my experience in cricket, it was a very shattering experience. It is the right word to describe the series. I didn’t know how to respond for the last 2-3 last days.&nbsp;

“Sometimes we face defeats — it is not like we have not lost before. Losing is okay. Thinking we are invincible will be the first mistake — and we never thought so. Maybe if we analyse it after 20 days, we will be able to reflect better and expect closure. Only if there is a closure, I will know if I learn from it. It can be the springboard,” he said.

<h2>What went in New Zealand’s favour?</h2>

Ashwin explained how the Kiwis found success in India this time. Although he began by saying that the tourists played incredible cricket throughout and deserved to win on merit, Ashwin pointed out how quicker pitches on offer prevented Indian spinners from trapping them in front across all games, which New Zealand made the most of, and walked away with the win.

“New Zealand played some fantastic cricket. At no stage in the series did they bat out India, but had enough runs on the board for their bowlers to stay in the game. They defended well, and there were no LBWs because of the speed of the pitch. It eliminated the pitch. They didn’t get hit in the legs. They just protected the outside edge. I think I couldn’t exploit it. I felt bad,” Ashwin added.

Meanwhile, the latest reports suggest that the BCCI held a marathon six-hour long meeting with the head coach Gautam Gambhir, captain Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar, discussing what went wrong for the hosts and how they could improve to turn the tables around during the tour Down Under.&nbsp;

Ravichandran Ashwin reflects on home Test series loss to New Zealand, calls it ‘shattering experience’

Former Australia greats Michael Hussey and Adam Gilchrist expressed their reservations over the hosts’ squad selection criteria for the first Test against India in Perth starting November 22.&nbsp;

While Hussey feels Nathan McSweeney’s selection ahead of a specialist opener for the first Test is a tough call, Gilchrist questions Josh Inglis’ selection as a reserve batter, whom he thinks is among the top six Test batters in the country.&nbsp;

However, per Cricket Australia's earlier policy of playing their best batters for any Test, Inglis’ appointment as a backup player, besides being second to McSweeney in the pecking order, contradicts its very purpose.

McSweeney, 25, never opened in first-class cricket until asked by the selectors to do so for the second unofficial Test against India A at the MCG, where he scored 14 and 25 across both innings. Though he impressed everyone with his match-winning knock in the second inning of the first game, picking him over regular openers and other contenders like Marcus Harris, Cameron Bancroft, and Sam Konstas baffles Hussey.

“I think it’s a tough ask to ask him to play his first Test match as an opening batsman against India in a huge series when he hasn’t opened before in first-class cricket apart from last week in the India A clash.&nbsp;

“It’s not easy at all. I know people will say Simon Katich and Shane Watson have done it in the past. They moved from the middle-order up to the top order, but they played 20-30 Test matches before they made the move,” Hussey said on Fox Cricket while commentating in the third Australia-Pakistan ODI on Sunday (Nov 8).&nbsp;

Considering Australia will be without their emerging star Cameron Green for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, fitting the top six best batters in the playing XI would be some task for the selectors, captain and management.

“It’s a tough ask, and, personally, I would prefer a specialist opener, but I think the Australian selectors’ philosophy is picking the best six batters in the country, and then we’ll figure the order out after that. They may not play him at the top of the order. Marnus Labuschagne may move up. Maybe they haven’t made up their mind exactly what their order is at this stage. They have just decided these are our six best batters, and now we’ll figure out where they sit best,” Hussey added.

<h2>Gilly questions Inglis’ new role</h2>

Inglis has been Australia’s first-choice white-ball keeper batter since the past year; however, he plays second fiddle to Test regular Alex Carey. Despite being among the runs in the domestic, his selection as a reserve batter, while he should be among the first names on the team sheet, makes Gilchrist question the selection criteria.

“Inglis is in that squad as a reserve batter, which isn’t traditionally what Australia does in home conditions. I think McSweeney will open…but do they stick with the policy they had last year where we want our six best batters in Australia playing in the top six? Josh Inglis, at the moment, is in the six best batters in Australia. Do they break away from that policy? I think they will.” Gilchrist said on Fox Cricket.

Meanwhile, the right-handed McSweeney will open alongside Usman Khawaja in the first Test against India.&nbsp;

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) CEO Kasi Viswanathan has addressed rumours about the franchise chasing India gloveman Rishabh Pant at the upcoming IPL mega auction 2025. With CSK veteran MS Dhoni in the twilight stage of his IPL career, indicating wanting to enjoy his last few years in this cash-rich league, the Chennai-based outfit would be keen to bring in his like-to-like replacement, and what’s better than doing it at the mega auction scheduled in Jeddah on November 24 and 25.

For the first time since rumours of CSK wanting to bag Pant’s services at the auction began doing rounds, Kasi, while speaking with former CSK batter and trophy-winner Ambati Rayudu, broke his silence, insisting that discussions around the same took place with the captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Dhoni, CSK would aim to chase their core players instead of going after big names.

It has been CSK’s strategy to retain their core players since the outset, a testament to their success in this league. With CSK retaining only five players, including Gaikwad, Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube and Matheesha Pathirana, and considering their remaining purse of INR 55 crore out of INR 120-crore purse, chasing big Indian names, including Pant, KL Rahul or even Shreyas Iyer, could be out of their reach.&nbsp;

Kasi also admitted they discussed these scenarios before releasing the final retention list.

"We had discussions with Ruturaj, the captain, MS (Dhoni) and Coach Stephen Fleming before we decided on the retentions. We were very clear that the players that helped the team grow, stabilise in the previous years were the ones very important for the CSK team to continue further," Kasi said, as quoted by Hindustan Times.

"It was very easy to decide on the retentions -- Gaikwad, Jaddu, MS, Shivam Dube and Matheesha Pathirana. But we knew that if we retain these players, we would have a lesser purse to go into the auction. We knew that we wouldn't be able to compete with the other teams when it comes to the best of the Indian players. I mean, we will still try, but I don't think we'll be able to get them at the auction," he continued.&nbsp;

<h2>CSK targets ex-players</h2>

With several players in the pipeline for CSK to go after from their previous squad, the Kiwi pair of Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra, Sri Lanka spinner Mahesh Theekshana and Indian seamer Deepak Chahar are among the favourites.

The five-time IPL winner could also get after local players picked during earlier auctions this time.&nbsp;

Coco Gauff became the youngest player to win the WTA Finals title in 20 years with a gruelling 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7/2) victory over Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen in Riyadh on Saturday. The 20-year-old Gauff rallied back from 3-6, 1-3 down, and erased a one-break deficit twice in the decider, to overcome Zheng in three hours and four minutes – the second-longest WTA final in 2024.

"This means a lot to me," said Gauff. "This is the first professional women's tennis event here in Saudi Arabia and I'll forever be etched in history in that standard."

"It's the second biggest title in our sport, so it means a lot. And just to be etched in history forever, it's pretty cool and hopefully there's more events here."

By clinching the trophy, Gauff pocketed a record $4,805,000, which is the largest ever payout at a professional, sanctioned tour event.

Gauff had knocked out the world's top two players, Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek, en route to the final and picked up her fourth top-eight win of the week with an impressive physical performance against Zheng.

The American was unaware she had earned a record prize cheque and laughed when she was told how much she made by a reporter.

"I don't know what I'll do with it, that's a lot of money. What you said? 4.8 (million)? I hope I'm one of the highest paid female tennis players this year, or athletes, so that would be exciting," she said.

Zheng is just the second Asian woman, behind Li Na in 2013, to reach the singles championship match at a WTA Finals.

The Chinese star wraps up her breakthrough 2024 campaign having won 31 of her last 37 matches, and will rise to a career-high number five in the world on Monday.

"The match today came down to just a couple of important points. It was very close. And at the end, when you play these type of matches, it's not about tennis, it's about choices on court," said Zheng. "It hurts to lose this match of course but I think it's better I forget it and move on for my next steps."

<h2>Youngest finalists in two decades</h2>

Contesting the youngest final at the WTA Finals since Maria Sharapova's win over Serena Williams in 2004, Gauff and Zheng, 22, brought their A-game from the start.

It was Zheng who faced more pressure on serve in the opening games, saving a number of break points to keep things on level terms with her American opponent.

The rallies got longer and more physically taxing and it was Gauff who cracked first, double-faulting to hand Zheng a 5-3 lead.

Zheng had to save a break point while serving for the set, which she closed on a netted backhand from Gauff.&nbsp;

The seventh seed kept up her momentum and clinched a fifth game in a row to go up 2-0 early in the second set.

Gauff stopped the bleeding though and fought her way back to level for 3-3, finally claiming her first break of serve on her sixth opportunity of the match. Zheng appeared to have lost a bit of her speed and Gauff took full advantage of the situation.

The American made it four games in a row to put herself in the position to serve for the second set but couldn't close, as Zheng saved a pair of set points to peg her opponent back and break. Gauff retaliated in the next game to scoop the second set and force a decider.

Gauff dropped serve at the start of the final set but pulled off an incredible stretch volley to strike back and even the score 2-2.

Zheng mustered all the power she could, unleashing huge serves and groundstrokes to create another gap and surged ahead 5-3.

Gauff would not relent and once again wiped her deficit. Zheng saved two championship points on her own serve in game 12 and carried the match into a deciding tiebreak.

Gauff was dialled in for the breaker, racing to a 6-0 advantage, and Zheng couldn't catch up as the world number three completed a remarkable comeback victory on her fifth opportunity.

The doubles title in Riyadh was secured by Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and New Zealand's Erin Routliffe, who avenged their Wimbledon final loss to Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova by defeating the American-Czech duo 7-5, 6-3.

Coco Gauff becomes youngest in 20 years to lift WTA title with thrilling win over Zheng Qinwen

Manchester City need to clear their heads during the upcoming international break and then return fit to play, manager Pep Guardiola said after his team's 2-1 loss at Brighton &amp; Hove Albion that stretched their losing run to four games.

Saturday's loss marked the first time City, second in the standings, have lost four matches in a row in all competitions since August 2006. Guardiola has now lost four successive matches for the first time in his otherwise glittering managerial career.

City have been rocked by injuries, with Nathan Ake, John Stones, Jack Grealish, and Ruben Dias all sidelined on Saturday, alongside longer-term absentees Rodri and Oscar Bobb.

"Of course, it's November, we are not far away (from rival teams) in this position before the international break," Guardiola said. "(The key to) winning games is the people come back fit, the people come back and can play, can train, and then improve our results."

"(We need to) clear our heads, go into the international break, and for players to come back fit. The success that they had the last seasons were because we had fewer injuries. I would like the players to be consistent and be able to play at the level we played in the first half."

Erling Haaland scored in the 23rd minute and had a couple of narrow misses in a first half where City had five shots on target.

But Brighton were much improved in the second half against a sluggish City and substitutes Joao Pedro and Premier League debutant Matt O'Riley scored to secure the victory.

"So the first half we should, not open the game, it was open, but have the control, and we could not, and we are not at the level right now to sustain 90 minutes," said Guardiola. "In the first half, we were brilliant, but of course, the second half sometimes fatigue (kicks in) and they make changes and they change the pace, and we cannot do it right now and we lost the game."

City had previously lost to Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup, Bournemouth in the league, and then suffered a 4-1 thrashing by Sporting in the Champions League on Tuesday that had Bernardo Silva saying City are in a "dark place."

"It's down to us as a group of players to make sure that we're fighting for this great club," captain Kyle Walker told Sky Sports. "It's tough to take, and I can assure you everyone wants to turn it around as quickly as possible."

Guardiola's second worst stretch as a manager was with Bayern Munich during the 2014-15 season, when they suffered three consecutive losses plus a penalty shootout defeat in the German Cup.

Saturday's loss marked the first time City, second in the standings, have lost four matches in a row in all competitions since August 2006. Guardiola has now lost four successive matches for the first time in his otherwise glittering managerial career. "(The key to) winning games is the people come back fit, the people come back and can play, can train, and then improve our results." "(We need to) clear our heads, go into the international break, and for players to come back fit. The success that they had the last seasons were because we had fewer injuries. I would like the players to be consistent and be able to play at the level we played in the first half."
