With the high-voltage clash between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul set to take centre stage on Saturday (Nov 16), the stakes were raised high on Thursday evening when the former slapped his opponent. The two were on the showcase on Thursday evening when Tyson appeared to have slapped his compatriot. However, hours after the confrontation Tyson’s close mate Tom Patti has confirmed the reason for slapping Paul.

Tyson’s close mate confirms the reason for the slap

“Jake stepped on Mike’s foot, which prompted the reaction...I was there and Mike just told me,’’ Patti said.

Tyson, 58, hit Paul flush on the cheek with his right hand following the formal weigh-in for Friday's fight at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. A scrum of security swiftly intervened to separate the two fighters following the incident before Tyson was ushered away.

"Talking's over," Tyson said before making his exit with members of his entourage.

Both fighters weighed in nearly identical at the heavyweight division's limit. Paul tipped the scales at 227.2 pounds, with Tyson coming in marginally heavier at 228.4 pounds.
