Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (Aug 30) tendered an apology for the collapse of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue in Maharashtra's Sindhudurg.

“In 2013, BJP named me as PM candidate. The first thing I did was sit before Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's samadhi at Raigad as a devotee and started on a new journey,” Modi said in Palghar.

“Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is not just a name for us... today I bow my head and apologise to my god Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Our values ​​are different, we are not those people who keep abusing and insulting the great son of Mother India, the son of this land, Veer Savarkar. They are not ready to apologize, they are ready to go to the courts and fight,” he added.

The collapse of the statue, which was inaugurated by PM Modi himself on December 4 last year, triggered a massive political controversy. Leaders from the opposition Congress party had demanded the PM tender an apology.

An engineer, named in the FIR registered over the collapse of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's statue in the western Indian state of Maharashtra has claimed that he was only responsible for the platform, not the structural integrity of the project.&nbsp;

Chetan Patil, the structural engineer, in an interview with a local channel, said he did not have anything to do with the statue that collapsed at Fort Rajkot in the state's Sindhudurg district. Patil, alongside contractor Jaydeep Apte has been named in the FIR.&nbsp;

“A Thane-based company did the statue-related work. I was just asked to work on the platform on which the statue was being erected,” Patil was quoted as saying by ABP Manjha.

Meanwhile, the Public Works Department (PWD) has blamed the Indian Navy and the sculptor for the collapse of the statue.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“The Navy was in a great hurry to complete the statue before the December 4 Indian Navy Day function at Malvan," a PWD official said.&nbsp;

“We were also told&nbsp;that the sculptor and structural consultant had guaranteed a 200-year life for the statue.”

“The sculptor and foundation expert were welding the statue at the spot for nearly two months. In the last eight days, naval officials took over the welding work and kept others out of the site. This will all come out in the investigation,"&nbsp;PWD executive engineer Ajaykumar Sarvagod added.&nbsp;

The Indian space agency, ISRO, has successfully demonstrated a technique to capture data on soil moisture, surface inundation, and ocean surface wind and wave measurements, using a satellite-based sensor that is 475 km above the earth. This novel method is known as GNSS-Reflectometry (GNSS-R). An instrument capable of performing this role was mounted on ISRO's EOS-08 satellite that was launched on August 16, and it began operations two days later.&nbsp;

GNSS-R is a new method of remote sensing. Simply put, remote sensing is the process of acquiring information about objects or places from a distance, typically using aircraft, satellites, or drones equipped with sensors. These sensors collect data by detecting the energy that is reflected from Earth.&nbsp;

There are dozens of satellites circling the Earth to&nbsp;specifically provide&nbsp;us with position, navigation and timing services. India has the NavIC constellation of satellites, the United States&nbsp;has the GPS, Europe has the Galileo, China has BeiDou, and Russia has GLONASS. All these satellites which are part of such constellations are constantly emitting signals towards the Earth. As these signals hit different geographical features on Earth, such as oceans, agricultural land, freshwater bodies, these signals are reflected back to space.&nbsp;

Aboard its 175kg EOS-08 satellite, ISRO has placed a small-sized, lightweight, low-power precision receiver that can collect these reflected signals. This GNSS-R instrument is developed by ISRO's Space Applications Centre, and it is India’s first space-borne precision receiver.&nbsp;

This receiver measures the power and other characteristics of the reflected signal that it receives. Based on the characteristics of the signal, the sensor can offer raw data, which can be processed to derive specific scientific information about the regions covered by the receiver, including soil moisture, surface inundation, and ocean surface wind and wave measurements.&nbsp;

<h2>The observations made so far</h2>

As the EOS-08 satellite circles 475 km above the Earth, it gets to fly over different regions. Therefore, the GNSS-R instrument can capture a wide range of data from various sources and generate the corresponding raw data.&nbsp;

For instance, during the bygone week, the GNSS-R instrument collected its first land data, as it flew over the Sahara Desert (North Africa). This data was processed to retrieve soil moisture. Likewise, when the satellite flew over a part of the Pacific Ocean, the data it captured was processed to derive the wind speed and wave height.&nbsp;

All the science data products are generated at SAC-ISRO using algorithms developed in-house. Given that the GNSS-R sensors are small and lightweight, and consume less power, such sensors can be mounted on multiple satellites to gather global data at a greater frequency and therefore they could help in monitoring several natural phenomena, evolving weather patterns, climatic conditions etc.&nbsp;

According to IMD, extremely heavy showers are expected in 12 districts: Kachchh, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Jamnagar, Morbi, Surendranagar, Rajkot, Porbandar, Junagarh, Gir Somnath, Amreli, Bhavnagar, and Botad.

On Wednesday (Aug 28), districts in the Saurashtra region, such as Devbhoomi Dwarka, Jamnagar, Rajkot, and Porbandar, received between 50mm and 200 mm of rain in 12 hours ending at 6 pm.&nbsp;

Bhanvad taluka of Devbhumi Dwarka district received 185 mm of rainfall during this period, the highest in the state,&nbsp;Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

According to Gujarat health minister Rushikesh Patel, more than 5,000 people have been rehabilitated so far, news agency ANI reported.

Earlier on Wednesday (Aug 28), Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a telephone conversation with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and assured him of all possible support and assistance from the Union government.

"It's been six years of negotiating the conditions between the public prosecutor and India. Now the court says that his safety can't be guaranteed," Jonas Christoffersen said.

Notably, Davy&nbsp;had previously admitted in a Danish court that he was aboard the plane which supplied the weapons to a village in West Bengal. He also acknowledged on record that the cache was meant for a rebel group named Ananda Marga.

As per reports, the massive weapon cache included hundreds of AK-47 rifles, anti-tank grenades, rocket launchers, and over 25,000 rounds of ammunition.

As the plane dropped the cache in West Bengal, it was detected by an Indian Air Force plane. As the people on board the plane tried to escape, they were detained and put on trial.

As per some theories, Davy was a secret CIA operative and that’s why he was granted immunity by the Danish authorities.

The entire excise policy was formulated only for the benefit of big players in the industry.”

He&nbsp;added, “Bidding for several liquor vends was cancelled with the excuse that there were no bidders. The same vends were later allotted by the state government to its favourite liquor contractors.”

The incidents of student suicides has&nbsp;surpassed the population growth rate and overall suicide trends,&nbsp;an alarming report based on data by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB)&nbsp;on Wednesday (Aug 28) has revealed.&nbsp;

The report titled&nbsp;"Student suicides: An epidemic sweeping India", released at the&nbsp;Annual IC3 Conference and Expo 2024 stated that&nbsp;student suicide cases surged by four per cent annually while&nbsp;overall suicide numbers increased by two per cent.&nbsp;

"The incidence of student suicides continues to surpass both population growth rates and overall suicide trends. Over the last decade, while the population of 0-24-year-olds reduced from 582 million to 581 million, the number of student suicides increased from 6,654 to 13,044," the report added.&nbsp;

<h2>Decadal rise in suicides&nbsp;</h2>

Over the last decade (2013-22), around 104,000 student suicides were recorded which indicates a 64 per cent rise when compared to the prior decade (2013-12).&nbsp;

The southern states and union territories viz., Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep had the highest proportion of all student suicides across the country at 29 per cent.&nbsp;

Notably, Maharashtra (1,764), Tamil Nadu (1,416), Madhya Pradesh (1,340), Uttar Pradesh (1,060) and Jharkhand (824) accounted for 49 per cent of total suicide cases across India.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Rajasthan, with the infamous Kota coaching city, where thousands of&nbsp;students relocate to crack engineering and medical entrance exams,&nbsp;is ranked 10th with 571 student suicides.&nbsp;

The Supreme Court on Thursday (August 29) criticised Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy for his comments on grant of bail to Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha in the Delhi liquor policy case, suggesting that it was due to a "deal" between ex-chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao's party and the ruling BJP.

The court said that these comments could harm court's image in public eye&nbsp;and raise doubts. A three-judge bench, led by Justice B R Gavai, comprising Justices P K Mishra and K V Viswanathan, asked Reddy's lawyer, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, “Have you seen what he said in the newspapers? What kind of statement is this from a responsible chief minister? Such remarks might rightly create apprehension among the people. Is this how a constitutional official should speak?”

The bench added, “Why should political rivalries involve the court? Do we issue orders based on consultations with political parties? We are not concerned with political criticism of our decisions. We act according to our conscience and oath.”

The judges said, “We have always stated that we do not interfere in legislative matters, and we expect the same from others. Do we issue orders based on political considerations?”

The Supreme Court was considering a petition to transfer the trial of the 2015 cash-for-vote scam case, where Reddy is an accused, from Telangana to Bhopal.

Reddy had suggested there were suspicions about why MLC Kavitha was granted bail within five months, while Manish Sisodia got reprieve in 15 months and Arvind Kejriwal is still awaiting bail. Reddy told reporters, “It is evident that BRS supported BJP’s victory in the 2024 LS elections. There are also claims that Kavitha’s bail resulted from a deal between BRS and BJP.”

The complaints were made by six women wrestlers and the trial court found that the complaint of one of them was time barred so it framed charges based on the complaints of five victims, senior advocate Rebecca John submitted, adding that, “this shows there was a deep application of mind”.

During the hearing, the court questioned Singh for filing a single petition for challenging the order framing charges against him and also seeking quashing of FIR and charge sheet and all other proceedings.

“There can’t be an omnibus order for everything,” the court said and added that he was challenging everything after the trial has commenced.

“This is nothing but an oblique way,” it said.

Advocate Rajiv Mohan, appearing for Singh, submitted there was no commonality between the causes and there was no continuity in the instances stated by the alleged victims.

He contended that the allegations levelled against Singh were “motivated” and since he was the chief of WFI at that time, the common agenda behind all the complaints was to remove him from the post of WFI chief.

The high court opined that all the averments now being made by the petitioner must have been considered by the trial court at the time of framing of charges.

Singh, in his plea, contended that the investigation was done in a biased manner as only the version of the victims, who were interested in taking revenge against him, was considered and the charge sheet was filed before the trial court without taking care of the falsehood of allegation.

The former WFI chief claimed that he has been falsely implicated in this case and no offence as alleged by the prosecution has been committed by him.

On May 21, the trial court had framed charges of sexual harassment, intimidation and outraging the modesty of women.

The court had also framed the charge of criminal intimidation against co-accused and former WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar in the case.

The Delhi Police filed an FIR against Singh after the intervention of the Supreme Court in May 2023.

India’s north-eastern state of Assam on Thursday (Aug 29) approved a bill mandating Muslims to get their marriage and divorce registered with the government. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who hails from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), called the day “historic”, saying his next target would be the practice of polygamy.

The CM took to X to share why the state government chose to enact a new law, replacing the 1935 Act that had governed these matters in the state so far.

“This Act will now make it mandatory to register marriages with the Govt and cannot contravene the legal age of marriage of 18 years for girls and 21 years for boys. It will also act as a strict deterrent against teenage pregnancy and improve overall growth of our girls,” Sarma said.
