The Women and Child Development Ministry have summoned Air India chief Pradeep Singh Kharola next week seeking an explanation behind the delay in completing probe in a sexual harassment case, a senior official said.

Union Minister Maneka Gandhi had directed the head of the Internal Complaints Committee of Air India to complete the inquiry in June.

The complaint of sexual harassment was lodged by an air hostess of the national carrier against its senior executive.

However, the inquiry has not been completed yet and the ministry has summoned Kharola on August 23 to explain the reason behind the delay, the official said.

According to a WCD Ministry official, Gandhi had also taken up the matter with Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu.

The air hostess has alleged that she had been harassed for the last six years by the senior executive, describing him as a “predator” and equal, if not worse, than Harvey Weinstein, the Hollywood filmmaker charged with sexual misconduct by leading actresses.

“This senior executive is a predator and has sexually propositioned me, abused me, used abusive languages on other women in my presence, spoken of sexual acts with me and other women in my presence in office premises.

“He has insulted me and denied me positions and privileges after I rejected his advances and he had made my life a misery at work and continues to do so,” she said in her letter, dated May 25.

The air hostess maintained that she had lodged a complaint with Air India last September and written to the CMD of the airline, but “none was forthcoming”.

She also accused the airline’s women cell of dragging its feet on the issue.

In a letter addressed to Prabhu and also marked to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the air hostess had asked for appointing a “neutral” investigation committee to look into the incident.

Responding to the letter, the civil aviation minister had tweeted, “Asked Air India CMD to immediately address the issue. If necessary, will appoint another committee.”

Infosys CFO Ranganath resigns: Report

The worst floods in a century in Kerala have<a href="http://wionews.com/india-news/centre-launches-massive-rescue-and-relief-operations-in-kerala-as-death-toll-rises-above-324-159869"> killed 324&nbsp;people a</a>nd forced more than 200,000 into relief camps, officials said on Friday, with the toll expected to rise as heavy rain pushes water levels higher still.

As the southwestern coastal state's chief minister sought military reinforcements to boost rescue efforts, a disaster management official said that, since the monsoon season started about three months ago, more than 324 people had died due to flooding and landslides.

As the waters have risen, many people have found it increasingly hard to access food and other basic amenities, or to reach safety.

"In some areas, airlifting is the only option... thousands are still marooned," Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said.

Vijayan said he was hoping the military could step up its support for rescuers already using dozens of helicopters and hundreds of boats.

"I spoke to the defence minister this morning and asked for more helicopters," he told a news conference in the state capital, Thiruvananthapuram, adding that he planned to send 11 more helicopters to the worst-hit areas.

During the current monsoon, Kerala has been hit with over a third more rain than average, according to the weather office. Vijayan said the floods were the worst in a century.

In the latest bout that began nine days ago, 164 people have died and some 223,000 moved into more than 1,500 relief camps, Vijayan said.

Further heavy rainfall has been forecast for most parts of the state on Saturday, and authorities said they planned to implement controlled releases of water from dams to manage flows and minimise damage.

Rains are expected to subside to "light to moderate" levels on Sunday, weather office said.

Stranded and desperate

A Reuters witness in a relief helicopter in Chengannur, a town in Kerala, saw people stranded on rooftops and waving desperately for help.

"The town looked like an island dotted with houses and cars submerged in muddy flood waters and downed coconut trees," he said.

Two circling navy helicopters dropped food and water in metal baskets and airlifted out at least four people, including a three-year-old child.

Anil Vasudevan, the head of the Kerala health disaster response wing, said his department had geared up to meet victims' needs.

"We've deployed adequate doctors and staff and provided all essential medicines in the relief camps," he said.

His teams were also making arrangements to minimise the risk of people contracting water-borne diseases once they return home after the floodwaters subside.

The rains have also disrupted transport networks in Kerala, a major destination for domestic and foreign tourists.

The flooded airport in the main commercial city Kochi has suspended operations until August 26, and rail and road traffic has been interrupted in many places.

"Water levels continue to overflow on tracks and surpassing the danger level of bridges at different places," Southern Railway said in a statement, adding it had cancelled more than a dozen trains.

Some crops have also been inundated. The state is a major producer of rubber, tea, coffee and spices such as black pepper and cardamom.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Kerala late night on Friday. He would be taking stock of the relief and rescue operation.

Kerala floods: 324 people dead in worst disaster in 100 years

In an early morning operation, the CBI today started searches at five premises of former Bihar Minister Manju Verma in connection with the Muzzafarpur shelter home abuse case, officials said. In addition to five locations, search operations are also underway at seven premises of Brajesh Thakur, who ran the NGO, his friends and relatives, they said.

The searches were spread across three residences of former Social Welfare Minister Verma in Patna and one each in Motihari and Bhagalpur, they said. Verma had resigned last week following allegations that her husband was a regular visitor to the girls’ shelter home where minor girls were facing sexual abuse.

It was alleged by the wife of an arrested accused from the department that Verma’s husband was a frequent visitor to the Muzaffarpur shelter home, where 34 girls were allegedly raped over a period of time. What appears to have precipitated her resignation was media reports that examination of mobile phone details of key accused Brajesh Thakur showed that he had spoken to her husband 17 times from January to June this year.

Speaking to the media from a prison van in the court compound at Muzaffarpur, Thakur had admitted that he used to speak to the minister’s husband, Chandeshwar Verma, but it was “on political issues”. Under immense pressure from the opposition, the Bihar government had referred the matter of to the CBI. The case relates to mental, physical and sexual exploitation of girl children residing at the Children Home at Sahu Road, Muzaffarpur.

The CBI has booked officers and employees of the shelter home in question–Balika Grih, Sahu Road Muzaffarpur. “It is alleged that officials/employees of Girl’s Children Home run by Seva Sankalp Evam Vikash Samiti used to mentality, physically and sexually exploit girl children residing at the said home,” CBI Spokesperson said.

The matter had come to light earlier this year when the Bihar Social Welfare Department filed an FIR based on a social audit of the shelter home conducted by Mumbai-based Tata Institute of Social Sciences. The audit report stated that many girls at the shelter home had complained of sexual abuse.

Asserting that infiltration by terrorists was a major concern, India told Pakistan on Thursday&nbspthat intrusions have increased in the north of Pir Panjal mountain ranges and Islamabad must take measures to prevent it.

A statement by the Indian Army said the Director Generals of Military Operations of the two armies held talks and expressed pleasantries on the occasion of Independence Day.

The Pakistan DGMO made an assurance that the Pakistani army would take prompt action against any move of inimical elements in proximity to the Line of Control and respond to information shared by the Indian side, thereby facilitating the conduct of anti-terrorist operations, the statement said.

"The Indian DGMO emphatically stated that infiltration attempts by terrorists were a major cause of concern. Early this month, four Indian Army personnel were killed in an encounter while trying to stop an infiltration bid in Gurez in north Kashmir.&nbsp

The Pakistan DGMO, the statement said, expressed&nbspsatisfaction on the measures being taken along the Line of Control by troops to maintain peace and tranquillity. The quantum of ceasefire violation has drastically reduced and augurs well for future, the statement said.

The US, Russia and Japan today condoled the demise of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Vajpayee, one of India’s most charismatic leaders, who led the nation through several crises while holding together a tenuous coalition with his inclusive politics and superlative oratory, died here today at the age of 93.

The American Embassy here, in a statement, said the US grieves with India on the loss of the former prime minister. “He will be remembered for his immense contribution in bolstering US-India relations. During his tenure, Prime Minister Vajpayee advocated for a robust partnership with the United States, referring to us as ‘natural allies’,” it said.

The US mission in India extends its deepest condolences to the family of Vajpayee and the citizens of India, it said. Ambassador of Russia to India Nikolay Kudashev said, “We mourn the death of Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a great statesman”.

Vajpayee’s name became an integral part of a whole era in Indian politics, the envoy said. “His devoted service to the nation can hardly be overestimated. Mr Vajpayee enjoyed due respect in India and globally. We knew him also as a poet, a man of knowledge and a true friend of our country, where he is well-known as one of the architects of our long-lasting and time-tested privileged strategic partnership,” Kudashev said.

Japanese envoy to India Kenji Hiramatsu said, “I am deeply saddened by the passing away of former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee”. Hailing Vajpayee as one of the most inspiring world leaders, the envoy said the upswing in India-Japan relations was only possible by the initiatives started by the former Indian prime minister.

“The demise of such a great leader is a great loss not only to India but also to Japan and other part of Asia as well as the entire international community,” he said.

Indian economy clocked a 10.08 per cent growth rate in 2006-07 under the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the highest since liberalisation of the economy in 1991, according to an official data.

The highest ever growth rate since Independence was recorded at 10.2 per cent in 1988-89 when Rajiv Gandhi was prime minister.&nbsp

The back series data on GDP has been prepared by the Committee on Real Sector Statistics, constituted by the National Statistical Commission. The report has been released on the website of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI).

The report compares growth rates between old series (2004-05) and new series based on 2011-12 prices.&nbsp

As per the old series (2004-05), the expansion in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at constant prices was 9.57 per cent during 2006-07, when Manmohan Singh was prime minister. As per the new series (2011-12), the growth number stands revised at 10.08 per cent.

This is the highest growth rate recorded by the country after the launch of the economic liberalisation programme launched by then Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao.

"The GDP backseries data is finally out. It proves that like-for-like, the economy under both UPA terms (10-year avg: 8.1%) outperformed the Modi Govt (Avg 7.3%), the Congress party said in a tweet.&nbsp

"The UPA also delivered the ONLY instance of double-digit annual growth in modern Indian history," it said.

The GDP numbers for the later years too have been revised upwards, according to the report.&nbsp

The National Statistics Commission had set up the Committee to recommend suitable measures to strengthen systems and processes for collection, collation and dissemination of these statistics with possibility for improving timeliness.

The highest ever growth rate since Independence was recorded at 10.2 per cent in 1988-89 when Rajiv Gandhi was prime minister. The back series data on GDP has been prepared by the Committee on Real Sector Statistics, constituted by the National Statistical Commission. The report has been released on the website of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI). The report compares growth rates between old series (2004-05) and new series based on 2011-12 prices. It proves that like-for-like, the economy under both UPA terms (10-year avg: 8.1%) outperformed the Modi Govt (Avg 7.3%), the Congress party said in a tweet. "The UPA also delivered the ONLY instance of double-digit annual growth in modern Indian history," it said. The GDP numbers for the later years too have been revised upwards, according to the report. The National Statistics Commission had set up the Committee to recommend suitable measures to strengthen systems and processes for collection, collation and dissemination of these statistics with possibility for improving timeliness.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi's outreach programme with overseas Indians has run opposition from the BJP government&nbsp;if AICC secretary Madhu Gaur Yaski is to be believed.

Yaski has told WION that the BJP government through Indian embassies has been&nbsp;trying to sabotage the visit of Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

Rahul Gandhi is expected to visit Hamburg on August 22nd, Berlin on 23rd and London on 24th and 25th.&nbsp;

When WION spoke to Madhu Gaur Yaski, he said,"There was tremendous pressure from the Indian embassy on overseas Indians to not organise a function for Rahul Gandhi as he was supposed to meet the British Parliamentarians. Despite that, we will be organising the function in a bigger hall."&nbsp;

"We thwarted their attempts. MPs of Indian origin will also come to listen to Rahul Gandhi,"&nbsp;Yaski added.

Yaski also claimed that in Bahrain the India embassy actually wrote a letter to the establishment that they cannot host the Indian delegation without consulting the MEA.&nbsp;

"Earlier we would represent India. The present government has made it into a BJP vs Congress affair," &nbsp;Yaski asserted. &nbsp;The AICC secretary said that similar resistance was met in Singapore too.&nbsp;

Yaski is set to accompany Rahul Gandhi to the London trip. Rahul Gandhi would also be accompanied by former union minister Milind Deora. &nbsp;

When WION spoke to Milind Deora, he said that overseas Indians&nbsp;outreach programme is important to the Congress and it is for this reason Rahul Gandhi has been&nbsp;taking out&nbsp;time to meet them at regular intervals.

Recently, Milind Deora and Sachin Pilot had gone to Australia and had met with a&nbsp;host of Indians of Rajasthani origin who showed great interest in participating in the upcoming assembly elections in the state.

The overseas Indians were a source of strength for the Congress at one point of time but the RSS has far outpaced the Congress in this regard. One of the most important features of Prime Minister Narendra Modi outreach programme has been his diaspora meetings in which he has been battering the Congress.&nbsp;

Today the grand old party understands what it has lost to the BJP. Indians living abroad have a&nbsp;great impact on Indian politics. With the proxy voting mechanism in place, Congress will be at a tremendous disadvantage during the Lok Sabha polls in 2019.&nbsp;

Overseas Indians are not only a source of funds but also help the Indian government network abroad. With the world becoming one village, the Congress is trying to make up for lost time.&nbsp;

When WION spoke to Milind Deora he acknowledged the contribution of the people of Indian origin&nbsp;and overseas Indians to the India success story. Milind Deora, Sam Pitroda along with Yaski are the men assigned to retrieve lost ground for the Congress.&nbsp;
