The US Congress has decided to remove sanctions between US-India partnership.

The conference committe of the House and the Senate on Monday agreed on the final version of an annual defence policy bill which would amend the Countring America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA).

The sanctions had been threatening uncertaininty for India-US relations.

After the removal of the sanctions&nbsp;India, Indonesia and Vietnam can continue buying Russian military equipment.&nbsp;

The move has come days after US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis spoke on Friday in support of waivers for sanctions being imposed against nations buying military gear from Russia.&nbsp;

The proposal to lift the sanctions came amid concerns that imposing sanctions, particularly in the case of India and other Asian allies, could threaten friendly relationships that the US has been working to bolster in recent years.

Last year, US lawmakers, seeking to punish Russia for its efforts to undermine Western democracy, passed the Counter America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, or CAATSA.

Under CAATSA, any entity doing business with Russia's state, semi-state and private defense and intelligence sectors could face economic sanctions.

Appropriate CAATSA waivers allow "nations to build a closer security relationship with the US as they continue to transition from reliance on Russian military equipment," said Mattis, who visited India last year.

India has increasingly turned to the US and France for arms purchases but is still reliant on Russian hardware and expertise to maintain its existing arsenal.

US to remove CAATSA sanctions against India

Liquor baron Vijay&nbspMallya, who has been accused of Rs 9000 crore alleged bank fraud, has been negotiating with the government of India for a voluntary return to the country.&nbsp

Mallya, who is contesting in a London court the Indian government's action for extradition, is said to have sent feelers to authorities that he would like to join the legal process in India and contest the recent action against him under the Fugitive Economic Offender Ordinance.

As per reports, his extradition trial is in the final stages of reaching its conclusion with the judgment expected in weeks.&nbsp

If he is extradited, Mallya will end up in a prison in India as an undertrial.&nbsp

Under this recently promulgated ordinance, the government can immediately confiscate all linked properties of Mallya in the country and abroad.

However, top sources in investigative agencies said the final contours of the move are still not clear as they refused to divulge more details.

On June 22, Mallya filed a 500-plus page application before the Karnataka High Court setting out assets of Rs 13,900 crores to repay his creditors and the same month he issued a media statement saying since 2016 he had been making offers to the banks to settle debts.&nbsp

A special Prevention of Money Laundering Act court in Mumbai had last month issued summons to the beleaguered businessman to appear before it on August 27 on the Enforcement Directorate's plea seeking action against him under the Fugitive Economic Offenders Ordinance in the over Rs. 9,000 crore bank fraud case.

The central probe agency, as part of this action, has also sought immediate confiscation of assets worth around Rs. 12,500 crore of Mallya.

If he does not appear before the court or respond to its summons on the designated date, Mallya risks being declared a fugitive economic offender, besides properties linked to him being confiscated.

Patidar leader Hardik Patel has&nbsp;been sentenced to two years in jail in connection with a case of vandalism at Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Rushikesh Patel's office in Visnagar during 2015 Patidar protests.

A Visnagar court in Gujarat announced the verdict on Wednesday. Patel's lawyer soon after moved a bail plea in the court.

Along with Hardik, Sardar Parel Group (SPG) convener Lalji Patel and another Patidar leader Ambalal Patel have also been found guilty and have been sentenced to two years in jail each with a fine of Rs 50,000. The trio has been convicted under 147.148.149 427 and 435.

Ahead of the court verdict, Patel, in a video message posted on his Facebook page, had appealed to his supporters to remain calm in case it goes against him.

In 2015, a mob of around 3000 to 5000 people vandalised BJP MLA Rushikesh Patel’s office during the patidar reservation protests. A total of 17 people, including Hardik, were charged with arson, rioting, and criminal conspiracy.&nbsp;

Hardik, who was arrested and released on bail, was banned by the court from entering Mehsana district in connection with this case. The protests demanding reservation for patidars in government jobs and educational institutions had turned violent, leaving 14 dead in police firing.

"As a token of our love towards people of Uganda, Indian Government has decided to gift a cancer therapy machine to the Uganda Cancer Institute in Kampala, which will not only serve the people of Uganda but also the people of many East African countries," PM Modi said following the delegation-level talks between the two nation.

"We have agreed upon two Lines of Credit worth nearly US $200 million and we will also give vehicles and ambulances for military and civilian use," he added.

"These are the three things that bring people together. We will work for mutual prosperity. Uganda now is importing less globally not just from India because we are a bit more self sufficient. In 2015, our imports from India were&nbsp;US $1.2 billion, but today the number is US $736 million. The exports are going up slowly from US $24 million&nbsp;in 2015 to US $44 million&nbsp;now. In order to improve trade, we need to get Indian tourists in Uganda," Museveni said.

Meanwhile, another group requested the shopkeepers with their folded hands to close their shops in Bandra.&nbsp;

The Eastern Expressway, Pune-Mumbai Expressway, Sion Panvel highway have been completely blocked. Also, local trains have been blocked in Jogeshwari and near Thane, however, there has been no impact on railway services in Pune, ANI reported. &nbsp;

Heavy security has been deployed in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad and Satara districts.&nbsp;

Watch: Shops forcibly shut down, clashes erupt during Maharashtra bandh

Large-scale violence marred a state-wide protest on Tuesday by Maratha outfits demanding reservation for the community in Maharashtra, where a constable died and nine other policemen were injured amid suicide attempt by three agitators.

Stone-pelting and arson were reported from several parts of the state, which remained on edge today and braced for a Mumbai&nbsp;bandh&nbsp;today.

Yesterday, after the protest turned violent there, was stone pelting and several vehicles were torched in Aurangabad and adjoining districts of Maharashtra. 
 
One police constable lost his life while 9 others were injured in a suicide attempt by three agitators. The outfit had called for&nbsp;Maharashtra bandh&nbsp;after a twenty-seven-year-old Kakasaheb Shinde had jumped off a bridge over Godavari river in Aurangabad. He was rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead.

In Jalna, the police fired in the air to scatter protesters.

A constable deployed near the funeral venue of the protester who jumped to death on Monday, died. Police said the cause of death is yet to be ascertained.

"The postmortem report is awaited. Some injury marks were seen on his hands and legs," a police official said, adding another constable there got injured in stone-pelting.

Protester Kakasaheb Shinde, 27, had jumped to death from a bridge over the Godavari in Aurangabad on Monday.

Shiv Sena MP Chandrakant Khaire faced the ire of the protesters when he went to attend his last rites at his Kaygaon village on Tuesday.

Khaire was manhandled by the crowd and had to beat a hasty retreat, police said, adding there was stone pelting on his car too.

The police at the venue caned protesters and lobbed tear gas shells, Aurangabad SP Arti Singh told PTI. "The situation in Aurangabad is under control. Police are alert to avert any unwanted incident."Eight policemen, including two officer, were hurt after protesters threw stones at the Ghansangvi police station, police said. A fire brigade van was also set ablaze at Kaygaon.

Jalna SP Ramnath Pokale said agitators pelted stones at a tehsil office. "To disperse the violent mob, we fired in the air and lobbed tear gas shells," he said, adding the police were trying to arrest those involved in the violence.

The situation is now under control and additional State RPF personnel have been sent, Pokale said.

Protesters also threw stones on a Hyderabad-Latur bus in Nilanga tehsil in Latur.

The Aurangabad Municipal Corporation general body meeting today decided to give a compensation of&nbsp;Rs.&nbsp;10 lakh to Shinde's family. A resolution seeking 16 per cent quota for the Marathas in jobs and education was also approved there.

In Sangli, Revenue Minister Chandrakant Patil said the government has done whatever was within its ambit and now it was up to the courts to take a call on the issue. Some "paid" people have infiltrated the stir, he said.

Protester Jagannath Sonawane, 31, from Aurangabad, sought to emulate Shinde's example by jumping onto a dry river bed, while another, Guddu Sonawane, also from the district, consumed poison. They have been admitted to a hospital, police said.

In Thane, activist Mangesh Suryavanshi (38) jumped into a creek near the Ganesh Ghat, but was saved by police and others,&nbsp; Thane Police PRO Sukhada Narkar said. He received minor injuries and was admitted to a hospital.

In Nanded, police cane-charged protesters to disperse them, an official said.

At Kaygaon, Aurangabad, protesters shouted slogans hailing Shinde as a 'martyr', police said.

Pune saw sporadic incidents of stone pelting. Some people threw&nbsp; stones at an administrative building in Baramati and a state transport bus was attacked, ASP Sandip Pakhale said.

Maratha Kranti Morcha members took out a rally in Pune.

"Our members took out a rally in Pune and traders kept their shops closed in Deccan, Laxmi Road and Bajirao Road areas of the city," said Shantaram Kunjir, a convener of the morcha.

The&nbsp;bandh&nbsp;received lukewarm response in Yavatmal and Amravati. In Yavatmal, the bandh call was given by the Maratha Mahasangh.

In Amravati, activists paid homage to Shinde at Rajkamal Square. They later marched to the Kotwali Police Station and submitted a memorandum addressed to the CM.

The&nbsp;bandh&nbsp;received a mixed response in Ahmednagar and Nashik districts.

In Nashik district, activists staged a&nbsp;rasta roko&nbsp;on the Mumbai-Agra National Highway. The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation suspended its services to Aurangabad from Nashik, an official said.

Protesters burnt tires at Sakora in Nandgaon taluka of Nashik, affecting traffic, the Rural Police Control said.

Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil blamed Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for the stir taking a violent turn and demanded his resignation.

Fadnavis had cancelled his visit to a temple in Pandharpur protesters threatened to disrupt the event.

Despite assurances from Fadnavis, nothing concrete has been done till now, community leaders have claimed.

"We will continue our agitation until the CM apologises to the Maratha community (for alleging that some members from the community were planning violence at Pandharpur)," Morcha coordinator Ravindra Patil said.

According to the report last month, a training document was recovered from the Maoists in Dantewada in Chhattisgarh. The report said the Naxals intend to use remote logs as they engage in a conspiracy to use the mines against the security forces.

The documents pointed to the use of cars and the bikes being tagged to the remote control bombs against the security forces. Naxals are providing training to the "teachers"&nbspso that they learn to use the&nbspmines, the report added. The BSF has recovered photographs of the remote-controlled bombs.

According to a report by intelligence agencies, in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur Maoists have formed a small action team to attack police informers and politicians. The Naxal team have also identified the camps of security forces.

The sources said there is a danger of "body mines" being used in Gadchiroli. According to the report, the Maoists can attack the soldiers and plant mines in their body so that they can be seen to be "trapping" the security forces. &nbspAccording to the report, the Naxals have used the mines against the security forces earlier.

The Naxals have been using jungles in Chattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh as training grounds, the report revealed.

Police on Monday widened an investigation to include the possible murder of a girl at a shelter in&nbspBihar's Muzzafarpur, where 29 young girls were allegedly raped and tortured.

Police in&nbspBihar&nbspstate carried out a dig at the home, Seva Sankalp Samiti, which was run by a local non-profit organisation, after some of the girls who used to live there alleged that a girl had been murdered.

"During the recording of their statements, 2-3 girls said that one girl was murdered and to verify that we did the digging today, but we did not find any thing so far," Muzaffarpur district police chief Harpreet Kaur told Reuters.

The home in Muzaffarpur, close to 80 kilometres (49.71 miles) from state capital Patna, has been shut since last month, after police arrested 10 people.&nbsp

Kaur said several girls had told a team from a social sciences institute that they had been beaten up in the shelter.

The ten were arrested on June 1 after preliminary investigations confirmed both sexual and physical abuse, authorities said.

All but two of 44 girls were medically examined and 29 of them were found to be victims of sexual assault, the police said. All of them have since been moved for their safety. Almost all are under 12.

"The medical reports of 29 girls do not rule out the possibility of sexual contact," Kaur said.

More than 100 cases of women being raped were reported daily in India in 2016, according to the latest available government data, and it has been tightening its rape laws.

It introduced the death penalty this year for those raping girls under 12.

Police widen investigation into Bihar shelter where girls allegedly raped

The man who died after being attacked by a mob in Rajasthan's Alwar on Saturday died of shock and injured by a "blunt weapon or object," a post-mortem report has said.

28-year-old Rakbar aka Akbar Khan was allegedly beaten to death by an agitated mob on suspicions of cow smuggling in Alwar district in the intervening night of July 20-21.

There were several fractures on his body and he had severe internal bleeding, reports said.&nbsp;Akbar's brother has said that he was beaten so severely that even his neck was broken.&nbsp;

The report also said that he had fractures in at least one hand, one leg and ribs. Also, he had injury marks on at least twelve body parts and went into shock due to the excessive beating.

According to media reports, the Alwar police took <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/alwar-lynching-cops-reportedly-stopped-for-tea-while-taking-victim-to-hospital-153828">three hours</a> to get the victim to a hospital which was only six km away. The police also allegedly on the way to hospital stopped to drop the cows to a shelter.

A senior Rajasthan police officer has said the police made an "<a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/alwar-lynching-police-made-error-in-judgement-says-senior-rajasthan-cop-153928">error in judgment</a>" when they decided to first take the cows over which Akbar Khan was lynched to a shelter before taking Khan to hospital.&nbsp;

At a time when the Alwar police are facing flaks for not timely attending the lynching victim, the kin of the deceased on Monday said they don't doubt the police.

It also called for "comprehensive traffic management plan to promote pedestrian movement" in the Taj heritage precinct. The document pointed out that roads along the Yamuna riverfront should be planned so that traffic is limited and pedestrian movement encouraged.

The Adityanath-led government also informed that top court that there should be no construction on the Yamuna floodplain and the riverbank should only have natural plantations.

The Supreme Court had earlier rapped the Centre saying that protecting the Taj Mahal had become a "hopeless cause" due to "lethargy" in taking necessary steps. &nbspThe apex court had also expressed anguish over the Uttar Pradesh government's failure to come up with a vision document to preserve the heritage site.

The Supreme Court had directed the government to either be shut down the Taj or restore in the right way. In an angry statement, the SC had said either the Taj should be&nbsprestored or demolished.

Mamo said he thought of doing the project after learning how much food is thrown away in the West.

Ever since the pictures were posted, the photographer and the non-profit organization have been subject to numerous criticsm over social media from many users including photojournalists, with many saying that the photograph had depicted poverty in a way that was exploitative and gimmicky, a portrayal that is known as poverty porn.

World Press Photos has released a statement following the backlash. The company stated that Alessio Mamo was awarded 2nd prize in a Photo Contest which was conducted this year for his portrait of Manal (11), a victim of a missile explosion in Kirkuk, Iraq.&nbsp;

The winners are then "given the opportunity to take over the World Press Photo Instagram account for a week to share work of their choosing."

The statement further said that the comapny provides "guidelines to the photographers undertaking a takeover."

"Alessio Mamo’s takeover started on 16 July and ended on 22 July. Other than his portrait of Manal, none of the photographs Alessio has shared were awarded prizes in the photo contest," the statement mentioned.

"The World Press Photo Foundation is a platform that connects members of our community (contest winning photographers, masterclass participants, etc.) with the general audience. Being a platform we do not limit photographer’s choices beyond the guidelines provided, and we ask the photographers to respond directly to the audience when questions arise," it further said.&nbsp;

The post got over 700 comments on Instagram and a number of users took to Twitter to unleash their outrage as well.&nbsp;

An Indian-origin entrepreneur's UK-based startup is using artificial intelligence to tackle the ongoing crisis of fake news. The 21-year-old entrepreneur's start-up uses a machine-learning algorithm to sift fact from fiction and is set to combat fake news around the world, including plans for a project specifically targeted at India.&nbsp;

Lyric Jain, an alumnus from Cambridge University who is originally from Mysore, created Logically in 2017 and has since built the company into a machine-learning platform to filter real from fiction.&nbsp;

Over 20 people have been killed in mostly rural areas across India in <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/whatsapp-to-limit-message-forwarding-in-india-after-mob-lynchings-153074">lynchings instigated</a> by false information in a span of few months.&nbsp;

The technology is currently going through multiple trials with its partners and advisors and will be launched on September for the UK and the US, and hit India by October.&nbsp;

"The Logically platform gathers the biggest news stories from over 70,000 domains and determines the credibility of the claims across each article. It does this by using a machine learning algorithm that is designed to detect logical fallacy, political bias, and incorrect statistics," the 21-year-old techie said, as quoted by PTI.&nbsp;

"By illuminating the quality of information across these articles, Logically provides users with a transparent and insightful view that allows them to determine how trustworthy the news they read really is," he added.&nbsp;

On WhatsApp, with 1.5 billion users, information can go viral in minutes as individuals forward messages along to their friends or groups, without any way to determine its origin. Messaging platforms have hosted disinformation campaigns in at least 10 countries this year, according to a report by the Computational Propaganda Project at Oxford University.&nbsp;

India has over 200 million WhatsApp users and with the system being encrypted, it becomes extremely difficult for law enforcement to intervene and <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/why-is-it-difficult-to-control-spread-of-fake-news-on-whatsapp-149046">stop fake stories</a> from spreading.&nbsp;

US Ambassador to India Kenneth Juster on Tuesday walked away when he was asked about an update on David Headley, who is reportedly in ICU after being attacked in a prison in the United States.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh today said the Congress did not need any alliance in Punjab for the 2019 Lok Sabha election, which it would win "hands down" on its own.

Claiming that the Aam Aadmi Party has "completely" lost the support of the people in Punjab, Amarinder said he had not at any stage mentioned he was open to an alliance between the Congress and the AAP in the state.

Given the public sentiment in Punjab, where the Congress had won all the recent elections, including Gurdaspur and Shahkot, with record margins, the party does not require any alliance for the parliamentary elections due next year, he said.

"The Congress did not need any alliance in Punjab for 2019 Lok Sabha election as it will win the polls hands down on its own," Amarinder asserted.

He, however, reiterated that the final decision on pre-poll alliances rested with the Congress high command, and its verdict would be accepted and followed by all the state units, be it in Punjab or elsewhere.

Making alliances are the prerogative of the national leadership, and it will take a decision at a suitable time, the Punjab chief minister said, adding that several factors, including winnability, are usually taken into account before going in for an alliance.

As far as the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) is concerned, it will share its views with the party high command as and when required, Amarinder said.

He said like in the past the national leadership will take into account the ground situation in every state and the opinion of the state units before taking a final decision on any alliance.&nbsp

Mallya tells Indian authorities he is willing to return, face the law: Govt sources

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday arrived in Uganda to hold delegation level talks. The Prime Minister was accorded a ceremonial reception in Uganda's Entebbe town.

President of Uganda Yoweri Museveni was also present at the ceremonial reception.

Besides the delegation level talks, Prime Minister Modi will also be addressing a community event later today. He is on a three-nation tour to the African countries including Rwanda, Uganda and South Africa.

During his visit to Rwanda earlier in the day, India and Rwanda signed eight agreements in an effort to bolster bilateral cooperation between the two nations.

While addressing a meet at the Business Forum in Kigali, Prime Minister Modi said "We want to boost economic ties between India and Rwanda. Our nations can do a lot together. There are several opportunities in rural development and small-scale industries.

"India is growing exponentially but our mantra is 'Sabka saath sabka vikas'. We will grow but we will also help those grow, who are with us. We will walk together," he added.

The incessant heavy rains since the last few days have weakened the embankments. Reports said the embankments have developed multiple cracks and perforations at several places.&nbsp;

As per reports, the right embankment of Mahanadi river has weakened at Sirlo, Khentalo, Tarapur, Mallipur and Bankola. The embankments of Chitroptala, Luna and Birupa rivers have also become vulnerable at several places.

"We should remain in a state of full preparedness to tackle any emergency situation and provide immediate relief to the affected people," Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said after taking stock of the situation here.

Stating that the state has received heavy rainfall during the last three days, necessitating evacuation of some people and provision of temporary shelter, Patnaik said the district authorities must start damage estimation.

Four persons died in Kalahandi district, while two persons were killed in Sambalpur, and one each in Kandhamal, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Subarnapur, Nayagarh and Malkangiri districts, Special Relief Commissioner's (SRC) office sources said.

Meanwhile, SRC BP Sethi has put the district collectors of Cuttack, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Jagatsinghpur, Khurda and Puri in Mahanadi delta area on high alert as 7,30,877 cucec of water flowed through Mundali gauge station near Cuttack by this evening.

Similarly, the collectors of Keonjhar, Jajpur and Bhadrak districts have been asked to be prepared as the water level in the river Baitarani crossed the danger level at 17.83 m.

Though there has been no major breach in any river embankment, at least four lakh people in 62 blocks in 14 districts have been affected, officials said.

The water-level in Mahanadi and Baitarani is likely to further rise as the weather department forecast more rains in the next 24 hours.

The Water Resources Department has rushed mobile teams to keep a close watch on weak embankments and canals.

The waterlogging situation in Cuttack, Bhubaneswar and Puri has improved as rains stopped since yesterday, the officials said.

Death toll rises to 12 in Odisha floods, state government puts 6 districts on high alert

Leaders of the BRICS emerging economies -- Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa -- will meet in Johannesburg this week, with the threat of a worsening global trade war topping the agenda.

US President Donald Trump's hardening stance has compounded fears of an all-out trade war after he slapped levies on goods from China worth tens of billions of dollars as well as tariffs on steel and aluminium from the EU, Canada and Mexico.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, China's President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the annual three-day summit opening in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

Earlier this month, China said that it would step up cooperation with other developing nations like the BRICS grouping to counter "trade protectionism".

China on Monday rejected accusations by Trump that it was manipulating the yuan to give its exporters an edge, saying Washington appeared "bent on provoking a trade war".

Trump has said he is ready to impose tariffs on all $500 billion of China imports, complaining that China's trade surplus with the US is due to unfair currency manipulation.

"As to the US being bent on provoking a trade war, China does not want a trade war but is not afraid," China's foreign ministry spokesman said when asked about Trump's threat to impose the across-the-board tariffs on Chinese goods.

Russian Economy Minister Maxim Oreshkin said last week ahead of the Johannesburg meeting that "this summit is about the context -- we are at a time when the US and China announce new measures almost every week".

He said much of the discussions with China would likely focus on what is happening with the United States.

"This is a trade war, so leaders' discussions are particularly important in coordinating our positions," said Oreshkin.

A unifying cause?

Sreeram Chaulia, of the Jindal School of International Affairs outside Delhi, said BRICS leaders would "concur that the US has unleashed punitive trade wars that are hurting all the BRICS members".

"They have a collective interest in promoting intra-BRICS trade. The urgency this time is greater," he said.

The BRICS group, comprising more than 40 per cent of the global population, represents some of the biggest emerging economies, but has struggled to find a unified voice -- as well as achieving sharply different growth rates.

Analysts say US trade policy could give the group some renewed momentum.

"Trade agreements between associations of countries like BRICS have become increasingly important given the self-seeking, and ultimately short-sighted, barriers to trade that are being instigated by the US," Kenneth Creamer, an economist at Johannesburg's Wits University, told AFP.

"South Africa, and Africa more broadly, can benefit from increasing exports to fast-growing countries like India and China. BRICS has the strategic potential to re-shape world trade."

The trade war risk also dominated a meeting of Group of 20 finance ministers and central bankers at the weekend in Buenos Aires, while International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde again spoke out against the tit-for-tat tariffs.

US President Donald Trump's hardening stance has compounded fears of an all-out trade war after he slapped levies on goods from China worth tens of billions of dollars as well as tariffs on steel and aluminium from the EU, Canada and Mexico.

Leaders of the BRICS emerging economies -- Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa -- will meet in Johannesburg this week, with the threat of a worsening global trade war topping the agenda. US President Donald Trump's hardening stance has compounded fears of an all-out trade war after he slapped levies on goods from China worth tens of billions of dollars as well as tariffs on steel and aluminium from the EU, Canada and Mexico. Russian President Vladimir Putin, China's President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the annual three-day summit opening in Johannesburg on Wednesday. Earlier this month, China said that it would step up cooperation with other developing nations like the BRICS grouping to counter "trade protectionism". China on Monday rejected accusations by Trump that it was manipulating the yuan to give its exporters an edge, saying Washington appeared "bent on provoking a trade war". Trump has said he is ready to impose tariffs on all $500 billion of China imports, complaining that China's trade surplus with the US is due to unfair currency manipulation. "As to the US being bent on provoking a trade war, China does not want a trade war but is not afraid," China's foreign ministry spokesman said when asked about Trump's threat to impose the across-the-board tariffs on Chinese goods. Russian Economy Minister Maxim Oreshkin said last week ahead of the Johannesburg meeting that "this summit is about the context -- we are at a time when the US and China announce new measures almost every week". He said much of the discussions with China would likely focus on what is happening with the United States. "This is a trade war, so leaders' discussions are particularly important in coordinating our positions," said Oreshkin. A unifying cause? Sreeram Chaulia, of the Jindal School of International Affairs outside Delhi, said BRICS leaders would "concur that the US has unleashed punitive trade wars that are hurting all the BRICS members". "They have a collective interest in promoting intra-BRICS trade. The urgency this time is greater," he said. The BRICS group, comprising more than 40 per cent of the global population, represents some of the biggest emerging economies, but has struggled to find a unified voice -- as well as achieving sharply different growth rates. Analysts say US trade policy could give the group some renewed momentum. "Trade agreements between associations of countries like BRICS have become increasingly important given the self-seeking, and ultimately short-sighted, barriers to trade that are being instigated by the US," Kenneth Creamer, an economist at Johannesburg's Wits University, told AFP. "South Africa, and Africa more broadly, can benefit from increasing exports to fast-growing countries like India and China. BRICS has the strategic potential to re-shape world trade." The trade war risk also dominated a meeting of Group of 20 finance ministers and central bankers at the weekend in Buenos Aires, while International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde again spoke out against the tit-for-tat tariffs. China's President Xi was due to hold bilateral talks with South African Cyril Ramaphosa on Tuesday after visiting Senegal and Rwanda as part of a whistlestop tour to cement relations with African allies. Signalling diplomatic rivalry over influence in Africa, India's Narendra Modi is visiting Rwanda and Uganda on his own five-day tour of the continent including the BRICS summit. Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan will also attend a summit as the current chair of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Erdogan will reportedly meet Putin on the summit's sidelines. European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker travels to Washington on Wednesday to meet Trump as part of the EU's effort to head off a trade war.

During the no-confidence motion against the government, Rahul had finished his speech and then, much to the surprise of the Lok Sabha and everybody in the country watching, walked across to the treasury benches and <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/rahul-gandhis-gandhigiri-a-hug-wink-and-pappu-talk-153181">hugged Modi</a>.

Yogi however called it a political stunt and said it was childish behaviour.&nbsp;

"Such political stunts are not acceptable to me at any cost. Gandhi does not have wisdom and decision-making powers of his own. A sensible person will never do such things,” Yogi said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The BJP had last week said Rahul might forcibly hug the Prime Minister but the people of the country would not support him in next year's Lok Sabha election. &nbsp;

"This is what it means to be a Hindu," Rahul had said after hugging Modi and walking back to the Opposition benches.
