As the dense fog and cold wave condition continue to grip the national capital, the train and flight services were hampered on Thursday.

Around 12 trains coming in and departing from Delhi were delayed while departures of all flights have been put on hold at Delhi airport due to bad weather and fog conditions since 7:30 in the morning.

Three flights have also been diverted. The list of delayed trains includes Purushottam Express, Brahmaputra Express. Farakka Express, Poorva Express, informed CPRO of Northern Railways.

The All India Democratic Women’s Association has expressed strong objection to the purification rituals carried out by the priests after two women of menstruating age visited the Sabarimala temple, calling it “demeaning” as it projects women as “impure” and “unclean”.&nbsp;

On Wednesday, the two women had stepped into the temple of Lord Ayyappa, breaking centuries-old tradition-defying dire threats from the Hindu right.

Kanakadurga, 44, and Bindu, 42, stepped into the hallowed precincts guarded by police three months after the apex court’s historic judgement lifting the ban on entry of girls and women between 10 and 50 years of age into the shrine of Lord Ayyappa, its “eternally celibate” deity.

Following the entry of the women into the shrine, the chief priest had decided to close the sanctum sanctorum of the temple in order to perform the “purification” ceremony.

“The purification ritual is demeaning to women as it projects them as ‘impure’ and ‘unclean’. It is also a clear violation of the Supreme Court verdict,” AIDWA said in a statement.

AIDWA strongly condemns the attempts of right-wing groups to create a communal frenzy and subvert the implementation of the orders of the Supreme Court (SC) in the Sabarimala case.

“They have resorted to threats and attacked the houses of the two women imperilling the lives of their families,” the statement said.

AIDWA has called upon all its units in the country to condemn this regressive stand of the communal forces on January 3, the birth anniversary of social reformer Savitribai Phule.

Despite the Supreme Court’s historic ruling on September 28 last year, no children or young women in the ‘barred’ group were able to offer prayers at the shrine following frenzied protests by devotees and right-wing outfits.

Kerala shutdown over entry of 2 women to Sabarimala temple, public transport hit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday accused the Congress of protecting those involved in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, saying such leaders were even rewarded with the chief minister’s post.
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
The jibe, apparently directed at Kamal Nath, the new Madhya Pradesh chief minister, came during a rally where he also charged the opposition party of “deceiving” farmers with loan waiver promises.
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
Kamal Nath has in the past denied such allegations over the riots, saying he had nothing to do with them.
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
The planned corridor between a gurdwara here and a Sikh shrine in Kartarpur, just a few kilometres across the border with Pakistan, also figured in the address.
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
Modi said the entire country had waited for justice for the past 35 years and wanted Congress leaders to be punished for it. “Even today, this demand is there,” he said.
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
He alleged that “files” on such culprits were kept under wraps on the suggestion of “one family”, an apparent reference to the Gandhis.
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
In an indirect reference to the recent conviction of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in one riot-related case, Modi added, “The NDA government pulled out such files, set up the SIT (special investigation team) and now the results are before you.”
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
Modi also attacked the Congress for charging him with corruption in the Rafale deal with France for 36 military aircraft, saying the party was “spreading lies” to weaken the defence forces.
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
He said the country needed to be wary of the Congress, claiming its history had been the glorification of “one family”.
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
He said it was made up of people, “who even today oppose the raising of Vande Mataram and Bharat Mata ki Jai slogans, whose history is of the massacre of thousands of Sikhs in cold blood, and those who even today reward the riot accused with the chair of the chief minister”.
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
Modi accused the national leaders at the time of Partition of failing to ensure that Kartarpur, where the founder of Sikhism spent his final years, did not go to Pakistan.
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
For seven decades, devotees could get a glimpse of the historic gurdwara only through binoculars, he said.
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
He said the NDA government took the “historic decision” to build the Kartarpur corridor, which will link Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur to Kartarpur Sahib.
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
Without taking names, Modi took a dig at Punjab minister Navjot Singh Sidhu, who went against Chief Minister Amarinder Singh’s advice and travelled to Pakistan for the groundbreaking ceremony of the planned corridor.
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
He said the Congress leaders gave an “opportunity” to Pakistan through that trip.
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
He hit out at the Congress for playing politics of “lies and deceit” on farm loan waivers.
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
“The Congress fooled the people for decades with the slogan of ‘Garibi Hatao’ (remove poverty) and now it is deceiving the country in the name of loan waivers,” he said.
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
The prime minister claimed this happened in Punjab as well, saying the Congress government in the state had waived only a small portion of the loans.
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
Modi made similar claims about the Congress promises before the 2009 Lok Sabha elections and the recent assembly elections in Karnataka.
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
Arrest warrants are being issued against farmers for not paying back loans in Karnataka, he claimed.
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
He said while the Congress governments had delayed the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission report, the BJP government at the Centre had implemented its recommendations on minimum support prices (MSP).
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
“Those who failed to find a solution to the farmers’ woes for decades and kept delaying the decision on MSP, are now again throwing dust in the eyes of farmers with their false promises,” he said.
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal and Union minister Harsimrat Kaur attended the rally, held by the BJP and the SAD to thank the prime minister for the development of the region.

Modi accused the national leaders at the time of Partition of failing to ensure that Kartarpur, where the founder of Sikhism spent his final years, did not go to Pakistan. For seven decades, devotees could get a glimpse of the historic gurdwara only through binoculars, he said. He said the NDA government took the “historic decision” to build the Kartarpur corridor, which will link Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur to Kartarpur Sahib. Without taking names, Modi took a dig at Punjab minister Navjot Singh Sidhu, who went against Chief Minister Amarinder Singh’s advice and travelled to Pakistan for the groundbreaking ceremony of the planned corridor. He said the Congress leaders gave an “opportunity” to Pakistan through that trip. He hit out at the Congress for playing politics of “lies and deceit” on farm loan waivers. “The Congress fooled the people for decades with the slogan of ‘Garibi Hatao’ (remove poverty) and now it is deceiving the country in the name of loan waivers,” he said. The prime minister claimed this happened in Punjab as well, saying the Congress government in the state had waived only a small portion of the loans. Modi made similar claims about the Congress promises before the 2009 Lok Sabha elections and the recent assembly elections in Karnataka. Arrest warrants are being issued against farmers for not paying back loans in Karnataka, he claimed. He said while the Congress governments had delayed the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission report, the BJP government at the Centre had implemented its recommendations on minimum support prices (MSP). “Those who failed to find a solution to the farmers’ woes for decades and kept delaying the decision on MSP, are now again throwing dust in the eyes of farmers with their false promises,” he said. Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal and Union minister Harsimrat Kaur attended the rally, held by the BJP and the SAD to thank the prime minister for the development of the region.

Cracking the whip, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Wednesday suspended 24 members of AIADMK for five sitting days for continuously disrupting the House.

The Speaker invoked Rule 374(A) against the erring members after they did not heed to her repeated pleas for maintaining order in the House, Parliament sources said.

On Wednesday, some members even threw papers toward the Speaker's Chair.

The AIADMK members have been continuously creating uproar in the House and even displaying placards to protest against the proposed Mekedatu dam in Karnataka on Cauvery river.

The AIADMK claims that the dam will affect farmers in Tamil Nadu.

Commenting on the Mahajan's action, AIADMK leader M Thambidurai, who is also Deputy Speaker, said the protest is their democratic right.

"We are not questioning the Speaker's decision" but the government is not responding to the concerns raised "democratically by us," he said.

He alleged that the Central BJP-led government had given approval to Karnataka to build Mekedatu dam as it wants to get some seats in that state.

The Rule 374(A) reads: "... in the event of grave disorder occasioned by a member coming into the well of the House or abusing the Rules of the House persistently and willfully obstructing its business by shouting slogans or otherwise, such member shall, on being named by the Speaker, stand automatically suspended from the service of the House for five consecutive sittings or the remainder of the session, whichever is less..."Ever since the Winter Session began on December 11, the Lok Sabha has been witnessing repeated disruptions, because of which it has not been able to transact much business.&nbsp;

Switching from beef to other protein sources can prevent millions of diet-related deaths globally and drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions, though overall consumption of meat and fish is expected to rise rapidly in countries like India, a new study said Thursday.

The new research, done by the Oxford Martin School for the World Economic Forum (WEF), found that balancing meat consumption with alternative sources of protein can lead to significant health and environmental benefits.

It also found a sustainable food industry and healthier human life can be achieved through further innovation in the development of alternative proteins, livestock production and consumer behaviour, Geneva-based WEF said.

For human health, the research found that switching from beef - the base case of the analysis - to other protein sources could reduce the overall global burden of diet-related deaths by 2.4 per cent, with the number climbing to 5 per cent in high- and upper-middle-income countries.

The report is expected to be discussed at the WEF's annual meeting later this month in Davos, which would be attended by thousands of business, government and civil society leaders from across the world, including from India.

Without giving country-specific figures, it said the findings will be increasingly important given the projected demand for meat from emerging middle classes.

In terms of environmental impact, the study said production of beef alone was responsible for 25 per cent of all food-related greenhouse gas emissions. With demand for protein set to soar, such demand will place huge pressure on the environment.

The report said beef has an emissions intensity of 23.9 kilograms of CO2 equivalent per 200kcal, while beans, insects, wheat and nuts emit 1kilogram or less CO2 equivalent for the same nutritional value. Other sources such as tofu, pork, alga and chicken produce only 3-6 kilograms CO2 equivalent.

The 13 sources of protein analysed in the report included beef, pork and chicken; fruits and vegetables that can be eaten naturally or processed, such as beans and peas; processed non-animal substitutes such as tofu, wheat-gluten products or mycoprotein; and novel products such as cultured meat, insects and alga spirulina.

The WEF's Managing Director Dominic Waughray said it will be impossible to sustainably satisfy the world's future demand for meat.

However, it can be possible to produce enough nutrition for 10 billion people and improve people's health without necessarily giving up meat - even red meat - altogether, through innovation in products, improvements in how we produce beef, pork and chicken, and an effort on the part of the consumer to embrace a more diverse diet, Waughray added.

Citing the OECD-FAO figures, the report said growth in per-capita consumption of meat and fish within Asia between 2018 and 2027 will be highest in India (12 per cent) and China (13 per cent).

During the same period, the total consumption of meat and fish will grow by 25 per cent in India and by 16 per cent in China.

On the other hand, demand for livestock-derived foods is projected to grow rapidly in China with an increased focus on meat, while in India it will be slower with a high concentration on milk.

The study also said a variety of factors will lead to a different development of supportive and cautionary narratives about alternative proteins in Asia compared with Europe and North America.

Among the four key factors, the study listed some countries such as India has a long cultural history of religious vegetarianism.

"In these countries, abstinence from meat has an association with tradition and conservatism, which contrasts with its association with liberalism and the counterculture in the West," it said.

The WEF said the government and regulators need to design rules to govern a wave of new alternative proteins to protect the public from health risks and unsubstantiated claims and to support the various sectors in their transformations.

India has planned 32 missions, including the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/isro-launches-gsat-7a-satellite-will-aid-army-air-force-communications-185316">"most complex" Chandrayaan-2 during 2019</a>, the Indian Space Research Organisation has said.

India's maiden human spaceflight<a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/isro-achieves-a-new-milestone-with-the-launch-of-hysis-180206"> programme 'Gaganyaan' activities</a> would go full steam to accomplish the various development and qualification milestones during the year, the space agency said.

"The year 2019 promises to be much more challenging to the ISRO community with 32 planned missions (14 launch vehicles, 17 satellites and 1 Tech demo missions)," ISRO Chairman K Sivan said in a New Year message.
&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;
"This includes the most complex Chandrayaan-2, which will be the 25th mission from SLP (second launch pad), and the development flights of Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV)," he said.
&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;
ISRO had earlier said Chandrayaan-2 will be launched in a window from January-February 16, 2019. Sources said it is expected by the middle of next month but no date has been finalised.
&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;
"We are all trying hard. Definitely, it should be possible to launch the mission in February," a senior ISRO official said. "There is no impediment. It's on track," the official said.
&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;
Chandrayaan-2 mission, costing nearly Rs 800 crore, is an advanced version of the previous Chandrayaan-1 mission about 10 years ago. This spacecraft to be launched on board GSLV-Mk III is a totally indigenous mission, comprising an Orbiter, Lander and Rover.

Sivan said during the year, Gaganyaan activities would go "full steam" to accomplish the various development and qualification milestones. The Union Cabinet gave its nod for the Rs 9,023-crore programme last Friday.
&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;
The objective of the mission is to carry a three-member crew to low earth orbit and return them safely to a predefined destination on Earth. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on Independence Day announced that the mission would be undertaken by 2022.
&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;
ISRO is aiming to reinstate its microwave remote-sensing capability through the RISAT (Radar Imaging Satellite) series and attain operational Geo-imaging capability through the GISAT (GEO Imaging Satellite) series, according to Sivan.
&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;
It is also planned to progressively improve the payload capability of GSLV (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle) and its variants. The country would meet the high throughput bandwidth requirement of Digital India and also in-flight connectivity with the launch of GSAT-20.
&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;
On the application side, crop production estimation would be enhanced to cover 10 additional crops and also provide vital inputs for water and energy security, Sivan said.

He said 2019 is the birth centenary of the founding father of Indian Space Programme, Vikram A Sarabhai, and year-long celebrations, consisting of a host of national and international events, would commence August 12, 2019.
&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;
Terming 2018 as a year of many 'firsts' and 'beginnings' with profound growth in all directions, he said during the year ISRO completed 16 missions, signing off with seven successful missions within 35 days.

This included two successful GSLV missions in a single year.

Among other things, the period also witnessed active discussions and partnerships with other space agencies in advanced technology areas of human spaceflight and other areas like LOX/Methane propulsion, joint satellite missions, among others, he said.

India has planned 32 missions, including the "most complex" Chandrayaan-2 during 2019, the Indian Space Research Organisation has said. India's maiden human spaceflight programme 'Gaganyaan' activities would go full steam to accomplish the various development and qualification milestones during the year, the space agency said.

India's maiden human spaceflight programme 'Gaganyaan' activities would go full steam to accomplish the various development and qualification milestones during the year, the space agency said. "The year 2019 promises to be much more challenging to the ISRO community with 32 planned missions (14 launch vehicles, 17 satellites and 1 Tech demo missions)," ISRO Chairman K Sivan said in a New Year message. "This includes the most complex Chandrayaan-2, which will be the 25th mission from SLP (second launch pad), and the development flights of Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV)," he said. ISRO had earlier said Chandrayaan-2 will be launched in a window from January-February 16, 2019. Sources said it is expected by the middle of next month but no date has been finalised. "We are all trying hard. Definitely, it should be possible to launch the mission in February," a senior ISRO official said. "There is no impediment. It's on track," the official said. Kerala locals forced the state to a standstill on Thursday as they protested against the government for allowing<a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/have-fulfilled-our-responsibility-by-giving-protection-to-women-others-are-trying-to-make-sabarimala-a-clash-zone-kerala-cm-187996"> two women to defy</a> an ancient ban and enter <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/kerala-observes-hartal-over-entry-of-2-women-to-sabarimala-temple-187962">Sabarimala temple.</a>

About 400 protesters, including some women, took to the streets of Kochi, the commercial capital of Kerala, in the early morning.

So far, 266 people have been arrested and 334 people have been taken into preventive detention for the various hartal-related violence.

Country-made bombs hurled at security officials by protestors in Thiruvananthapuram. Some personnel sustained minor injuries in the incident.

Many stores and other small businesses were shut after the people groups called for a state-wide stoppage. Most bus services were halted and taxis were refusing to take passengers as some drivers said they feared they would be attacked.

The state's Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, told reporters that women were the target of some attacks by protesters, including women journalists covering the events.

Supreme Court in September ordered the lifting of the ban on women of menstruating age entering the Sabarimala hill temple, which draws millions of worshippers a year.

The temple has refused to abide by the ruling and subsequent attempts by women to visit have been blocked by thousands of devotees.

In the early hours of Wednesday, two women were escorted by police into the temple through a side gate without being spotted by devotees guarding the temple.

The women offered prayers from the back of the crowd from the top of a staircase where they could see the deity below without drawing the attention of the priest or other devotees, a police official familiar with the operation said.

He did not wish to be identified due to the sensitivity of the issue.
"Surprise was the biggest element here," the official said.

BUSES DAMAGED

Protests erupted soon afterwards. A woman police constable was attacked and molested by five protesters in one of the districts near Kochi on Wednesday, while a protester was pelted with stones and killed in a southern district of the state, police said.

On Thursday, protesters were seen marching towards the main city junction to stage a sit-in protest, shouting slogans and waving flags, with streets deserted.

The protests remained largely peaceful on Thursday, Vijay Sakhare, Inspector General of Police Kochi Range, told Reuters.

"We arrested more than 600 people on Wednesday from Kochi and four other adjoining districts and took nearly 300 into preventive custody," Sakhare said, adding that police were ready to offer protection to those who wanted to conduct routine business on Thursday.

"Some protesters may turn violent such as stone-throwing or blocking roads and we are armed with riot gear and have tear gas and water cannons," he said.

In several places, protesters damaged state transport buses, V.P. Pramod Kumar, deputy director, public relations, state police headquarters, told Reuters.

The Kerala state government is run by left-wing parties and has sought to allow women into the temple - a position that has drawn criticism from both of India's main political parties, the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress.

DEFIANCE BY STEALTH

The two women, Bindu Ammini, 42, and Kanaka Durga, 44, had approached the state police to find a way to enter the temple after a failed attempt on Dec. 24.

As a result, officials from the state government and the police conducted a few rounds of reconnaissance to identify the side entrance, and to decide on the appropriate timing and transport, the police official said.

For more than a week before Wednesday`s visit, the women were under police protection at an undisclosed location, unknown even to their families, to prevent the plan from leaking out, he said.

In the early hours of Wednesday, the police took the two women to the hill temple inside an ambulance to avoid attention. Medical services are frequently used outside the temple because the elderly who go on the trek often face discomfort, the official said.

After offering prayers, the women merged with the crowd and headed to the exit, accompanied by four police in plain clothes, the police official said.

"Every minute, about 100 devotees throng to the sanctum sanctorum and there was no way the priest would have noticed these two," he said.

India has reacted to <a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/trump-mocks-indian-pm-for-library-in-afghanistan-187955">US President Donald Trump's jibe&nbsp;</a> at Prime Minister Narendra Modi mocking India's development aid to Afghanistan.&nbsp;

Top sources speaking to WION said: "India firmly believes in the critical role that developmental assistance can play in transforming human lives. India plays a significant role in Afghanistan as a development partner. This partnership is built on the specific needs and requirements worked out with the government of Afghanistan. It is aimed at the welfare of the people of Afghanistan and for a tangible improvement in the lives of its people."&nbsp;

The sources further added that "India seeks to build capacities and capabilities of Afghan nationals and its institutions for governance and delivery of public service, develop socio-economic infrastructure, secure lives and promote livelihood."&nbsp;

Sources ruled out India sending troops to the country saying we "do not send armed forces abroad except under the specific mandate of UN Peacekeeping Operations."&nbsp;

The US president in his first cabinet meet of the year had said that even though he gets "along very well with India and prime minister Modi", PM Modi "is constantly telling me, he built a library in Afghanistan" and added "don’t know who’s using it (the library) in Afghanistan".&nbsp;

India's development partnership is premised on five pillars - infrastructure, capacity building, humanitarian assistance, economic development and connectivity.&nbsp;

On the infrastructure front, India is building a 218 km road from Zaranj to Delaram for facilitating movement of goods and services to the Iranian border.&nbsp;

The highway will connect Iran with the Garland highway, which links Kabul, Kandahar, Mazar-e-Sharif Herat and Kunduz. The construction of 220kV DC transmission line from Pul-e-Khumri to Kabul and a 220/110/20 kV sub-station at Chimtala will not only bring electricity and light to smaller towns and villages but also provide a key element of security for Afghan and US forces.&nbsp;

The India prime minister along with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani had inaugurated the India-Afghanistan friendship dam (Salma Dam). The dam has an installed capacity of 42 MW and supplies water for irrigating 75,000 hectares of land. Since its inauguration in 2016, the project has been generating electricity and releasing water for irrigation. The new Afghan parliament is also built with Indian support.&nbsp;

On capacity building, more than 3,500 Afghans are undergoing various training programmes in India. New Delhi also offers 500 Indian technical and economic cooperation (ITEC) slots to Afghanistan annually.&nbsp;

As far as humanitarian assistance is concerned, India has supplied of 1.1 million MT of wheat to Afghanistan. The Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health IGICH - a 400-bed hospital is the main hospital in Afghanistan and caters to the well-being of children from all across Afghanistan.&nbsp;

Also, the direct air freight corridor between India and Afghanistan established in 2017 has increased the market for Afghan good in India.

The Supreme Court Thursday revived the government case in National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) against Nestle India seeking damages of Rs 640 crore alleging unfair trade practices, false labelling and misleading advertisements.

The top court had on December 16, 2015, stayed the proceedings before the NCDRC and directed the CFTRI (Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysuru) to place its test report before it.

A bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and Hemant Gupta was told by senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Nestle India, that tests reports of the Mysuru lab had been submitted and it found that lead content in Maggi noodles was well within the limit.

"Why should we be eating Maggi with lead in it?", Justice Chandrachud asked Singhvi, who replied that lead content in the noodles was well within the permissible limit and there was some amount of lead in various other products.

The bench said the report of CFTRI, where the samples of Maggi noodles were tested following earlier orders of the court, will form the basis for the proceedings before the NCDRC.

"We are of the view that CFTRI report is evaluated by the NCDRC in the complaint before it. It will not be appropriate for this court to pre-empt the jurisdiction of NCDRC... All the rights and contentions of the parties will remain open," the bench said.

During the hearing, Additional Solicitor General Vikramjit Banerjee, appearing for Centre said that in the wake of the Mysuru lab report the matter should go back to NCDRC and stay on the proceedings should be vacated.

Singhvi said the matter has now become infructuous as the report is in my favour and presence of MSG (monosodium glutamate) was not found.

He along with senior advocate Arvind Dattar opposed sending the matter back to NCDRC saying nothing remains to be decided after the lab report.

"Why should we usurp the power of NCDRC. We will send the lab reports to the commission and them ask to dispose of the complaint filed before it," the bench said adding that the appeal against the Bombay High Court order which had in 2015 quashed the Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) ban order against Nestle's Maggi noodle will be heard at a later stage.

Meanwhile, Nestle in a statement said it welcomes the order passed by the apex court.

"As per SC directives, samples were sent to the CFTRI. The CFTRI analysis showed samples were compliant for lead and other parameters," it said.

"The appeal filed by Nestlé India against the two interim orders passed by National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) &nbsp;came up for hearing today. As per the lawyers who appeared for Nestle, Hon’ble Supreme court in view of reports received from CFTRI has agreed with Nestlé’s contention and has set aside both the interim orders passed by NCDRC which were challenged by Nestle. The Supreme Court has also directed that the reports received from CFTRI will be the basis for proceedings before NCDRC. Full details will be known only after receipt of the order by the Company," the statement reads.

The Consumer Affairs Ministry had in 2015 filed a complaint against Nestle India before the NCDRC using a provision for the first time in the nearly three-decade-old Consumer Protection Act.

It had filed a complaint against Nestle for causing harm to Indian consumers by allegedly indulging in unfair trade practices and false labelling related to the Maggi noodles product.

It was for the first time that the government had taken action under Section 12-1-D of the Consumer Protection Act, under which both the Centre and states have powers to file complaints.

In the petition filed before the NCDRC, the ministry had charged that Nestle India has misled consumers claiming that its Maggi noodle was healthy -- "Taste bhi healthy bhi".

Nestle had to withdraw its instant noodles brand Maggi from the market over allegations of high lead content and presence of MSG.

The food safety regulator FSSAI had banned Maggi noodles after it found excess level of lead in samples, terming it as "unsafe and hazardous" for human consumption.

FSSAI had also said Nestle violated labelling regulations on taste enhancer 'MSG' and ordered the company to submit a compliance report on its orders.

'Why should we be eating Maggi with lead in it?' SC asks, revives case against Nestle India

Cracking the whip on unruly MPs, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has suspended 45 Lok Sabha members belonging to the TDP and the AIADMK since Wednesday after they created a ruckus in the House and continuously disrupted proceedings for days.

Mahajan had suspended 24 AIADMK members on Wednesday for five consecutive sittings. A day later, she suspended 21 members of AIADMK, TDP and an unattached YSR Congress member. The action was taken under rule 374A of Lok Sabha which says that they cannot attend the remaining days of the session, which concludes on January 8.

While AIADMK has 37 members, the TDP has 15 in the lower house. Action against such a large number of MPs is unusual. In February 2014, the then Speaker Meira Kumar had suspended 18 MPs from Andhra Pradesh following bedlam in the House. Those suspended then were either supporting or opposing the creation of Telangana.

Proceeding in Lok Sabha during the winter session that commenced on December 11 have been repeatedly stalled due to protests by AIADMK and TDP members over a proposed dam on river Cauvery and special state status to Andhra Pradesh respectively.

While 19 MPs were suspended around noon on Thursday, two others were asked to leave the House around 2.00 pm.

As soon as the Zero Hour commenced at noon on Thursday, AIADMK and TDP members trooped in the Well, raising slogans and carrying banners.The AIADMK members flung papers towards the chair several times. Amid the ruckus, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Narendra Singh Tomar appealed to the agitating MPs to return to their seats.

However, protests by the unrelenting members of the two Southern parties continued.

At this, the Speaker initially warned that she would be forced to name the unruly members and take action against them.

"I warn you, I will take your names. You have come to the Well and are persistently creating trouble," she said.

As the members refused to budge, the Speaker suspended 11 TDP MPs, seven AIADMK members and an unattached member under Rule 374(A) for the next four sitting of the House.

Among the suspended MPs were former Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju (TDP), Thota Narasimham (TDP) and Renuka Butta (unattached) who had won on a YSR Congress ticket.

"You are willfully obstructing the proceedings of the House. I am, therefore, constrained to name you and suspend you for four consecutive days," Mahajan said.

The Speaker subsequently adjourned the House till 2 pm after conducting business for nearly 15 minutes during the Zero Hour.

When the House met again at 2 pm, some members continued to protest in the Well despite being suspended.

She then suspended two more TDP members for disrupting proceedings. Amid the din, the House was adjourned for the day without taking up the remaining part of the debate on the Rafale issue.

Meanwhile, some pictures being shared on social media purportedly showed TDP members standing on the Speaker's podium and holding placards when the House was adjourned soon afternoon.

They had not left the Lok Sabha chamber even after the House was adjourned.

Two questions were taken up during the Question Hour even as the members continued to shout slogans.

Members from the Congress wanted to raise the Sabarimala issue and Mahajan told them that the matter can be raised later.&nbsp;

Members from the Congress wanted to raise the Sabarimala issue and Mahajan told them that the matter can be raised later.

Lok Sabha rocked by disruptions; 45 MPs suspended in 2 days

The Delhi Assembly witnessed uproar over a recent controversial resolution on former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, leading to the suspension of three Opposition MLAs for the day and adjournment of proceedings for 15 minutes.

BJP MLA Manjinder Singh Sirsa, who was marshalled out of the House when he came into the Well, alleged that he was manhandled and his turban was allegedly forcefully removed during the adjournment in the House. As the House proceedings began, Sirsa moved a notice for the “removal of Speaker Ram Niwas Goel” over alleged “changes in recent resolution” moved by a ruling party MLA demanding to strip former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi of Bharat Ratna.

The Speaker then suspended Opposition Leader Vijender Gupta, Sirsa and BJP MLA Jagdish Pradhan for the day from House proceedings. Thereafter, Goel adjourned the House for 15 minutes. Talking to reporters outside the House, Gupta and Sirsa alleged that the “content of resolution was changed” as the ruling party wants to forge alliance with the Congress in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The BJP MLAs strongly protested against deletion of the demand asking the Centre to take back Bharat Ratna from Rajiv Gandhi from the proposal approved by the House in the last meeting.

Asserting that every issue raised by the Congress on Rafale deal has been clarified by the Supreme Court, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Thursday said in Rajya Sabha that there is no controversy in the matter, except in minds of the opposition party leaders.&nbsp;

Unsatisfied by the minister’s reply during the Question Hour, the Congress members including former prime minister Manmohan Singh staged a walkout.

Congress leader Anand Sharma in his supplementary query demanded that the government make public the minutes of the meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former French President Fracois Hollande held last year on the Rafale deal in a bid to settle the controversy once for all. To this, Swaraj said, “Anandji, there is no controversy. Controversy is there in your mind. All the controversial issues that you (Congress) raised, the Supreme Court has clarified on each of them. Please don’t use the word controversy again.”

She said, “The whole country knows there is no controversy. The Supreme Court has cleared each issue. If you still think there is a controversy, then no one can reply.” To a query raised by Shiv Sena member Sanjay Raut if there was any discussion on the Rafale deal during the recent visit of French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian to India, Swaraj said, “There was no discussion on the matter.”

“On that day, the Supreme Court verdict (on Rafale deal) was pronounced. He (French Minister) was very happy. He expressed joy and felt there was no need to have a discussion,” she said.&nbsp;

On the Indo-French fund for developing a script for co-production of films, the Minister said the French delegation had visited Mumbai and had a discussion with representatives of Bollywood besides meeting the state chief minister.

To another query on the Jaitapur Nuclear Power project, Swaraj said that an agreement was signed on March 22, 2016, to set up a plant. France’s EDF and India’s NPCL are looking into it. “Six EPR units are to be set with each unit having a capacity of 1650 megawatt. Once it is ready, it will be the world’s largest nuclear plant,” she said. The project was reviewed in March last year when the rate of power per unit and setting up of a reference plant were also discussed. “We will proceed after seeing the model plant. We have decided about the dates,” she added.

In a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Shiv Sena Thursday said it wondered when the Ram temple could be constructed in Ayodhya if not during the tenure of the current BJP-led majority government.&nbsp;

It said if the Ram temple cannot be built before 2019 (polls), it will be like betraying people of the country, for which the BJP and the RSS would have to apologise to them.

The Sena, an ally of the BJP at the Centre and in Maharashtra, slammed Modi for his comment in a recent interview, broadcast by several TV channels, that any government action on the temple construction can happen only after the judicial process is over.

“He (Modi) came to power in the name of Ram, however, according to him, Lord Ram is not bigger than law (RPT Lord Ram is not bigger than law). The question now is if the temple cannot be constructed in the majority government, when will it ever be,” the Sena asked in an editorial in party mouthpiece ‘Saamana’.

The Modi government got a magnificent statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel constructed in Gujarat, but the prime minister did not show the courage of ‘sardar’ over the Ram temple issue, it said, asserting that this would be recorded in the pages of history. The agitation for the Ram temple began in 1991-92 and hundreds of ‘kar sevaks’ lost their lives, it noted.

“Who did this massacre and why? While hundreds of Hindu kar sevaks died, the subsequent (Mumbai) bomb blasts led to the killing of hundreds of people from both sides (Hindu and Muslim communities). If the Supreme Court had to take the decision, why this massacre and bloodshed?” it asked.

The Uddhav Thackeray-led party further sought to know whether the BJP and the RSS were ready to take responsibility for those killings and bloodshed. “The way the Congress had to apologise for the massacre of Sikhs (after the anti-Sikh riots in 1984), we have to understand the sentiments of those who demand an apology (from the BJP) for the massacre of Hindus,” it said.

Further attacking Modi over his interview in which he defended his government’s decision of demonetisation in 2016, the Marathi daily said if note ban was not a shock and people had been warned a year before it was done, “who exactly were those people”?

“Those who lost their lives standing in bank queues and those who lost employment, were they not citizens?” it further asked.

In remarks laced with sarcasm, the Sena said if according to Modi, the upcoming general elections would be between people and the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ (the proposed anti-BJP alliance), “did people of Iran vote for the BJP in 2014?” “The people of five states who voted against the party (in the recent Assembly polls), are they not citizens of this country,” the Sena queried.
