Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday urged people to avoid throwing plastic and other waste materials into the seawater while immersing the idols of the Lord Ganesha.

After laying the foundation stone for metro projects, Prime Minister Modi said that during immersion of Lord Ganesha idols "a lot of plastic and other waste goes into the sea."

"This time we have to try that these materials which increase pollution are not immersed in water."

He also urged people of Mumbai to make the Mithi river and other water bodies plastic-free.

"In the last five years, we have made sincere efforts to improve the infrastructure of 'Amchi Mumbai'," Modi said in the presence of newly-appointed Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray.

The Prime Minister started his one-day tour by offering prayers to Lord Ganesh at Vile Parle here.

"Ganpati Bappa Morya! Today I got the privilege of worshipping at the same place in Mumbai, where Ganpati was established a hundred years ago with the inspiration of Lokmanya Tilak," he tweeted.

He also said the metro network is being expanded in the region at a cost of about Rs 1.5 lakh crore.

"Till 2014, the metro was running in a few cities only. Today the metro in 27 cities in the country has either started or is about to start," Modi said.

"Today, about 750 km of metro lines are operational across the country, out of which 400 km were started in the last five years. More than half of the metro lines were added in last five years," he added.

During his monthly radio address to the nation, 'Mann Ki Baat', the Prime Minister had pitched for launching a "new mass movement" against single-use plastic from October 2, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

He also spoke about the initiative during the Independence Day address, urging people to join the movement.

India has regretted Pakistan's "futile" decision of not allowing President Ram Nath Kovind's plane to use the country's airspace.

The President will be in Europe from September 9 to 17 and will visit Iceland, Switzerland and Slovenia.

Ministry of External Affairs in a statement said, "To deny overflight clearance for the VVIP special flight which is otherwise granted routinely by any normal country. We call upon Pakistan to recognise the futility of such unilateral actions."

Pakistan rejected the Indian government's request for President Ram Nath Kovind's plane to use Pakistani airspace during his upcoming visit to Europe on back of ongoing India-Pakistan tensions.

"Indian government had asked Pakistan to use its airspace for its president's movement. Given the current situation we have decided not to give permission to India for this airspace usage, " Pak FM SM Qureshi said.

Pakistani government sources say Prime Minister Imran Khan had himself endorsed this decision to decline usage of Pakistani airspace for Indian President’s movement.

Interestingly, Qureshi announced it even before notifying the Indian government. Before every VVIP visit outside India, New Delhi requests the neighbouring country over which the plane passes for use of airspace.

Last month India had requested Islamabad to grant the use of airspace for Prime minister Narendra Modi's visit to France which the country allowed despite the ongoing India-Pakistan tensions. This led to considerable political fallout in the country since on one hand, Imran Khan government was castigating India on its August 5 internal decision to remove a special status for the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir and on the other hand allowing the use of airspace by Indian VVIPs. Pakistan government after a cabinet meeting had then announced that it is considering closing its airspace for India but airspace remains open and no decision has been taken regarding this.

Pakistan had closed its airspace on February 27 after India's counter-terror operation in Balakot on February 26 on the back of February 14th Pulwama attack that killed more than 40 Indian security personnel. The closure that lasted for more than four months had caused considerable problem globally especially to Afghans who could easily travel to India.

Closure of Pakistan airspace had affected around 600 flights that operate per day across India-Pakistan airspace boundary and these flights were re-routed Arabian sea airspace.

Chandrayaan-2 Moon mission has accomplished 90 to 95 per cent of its mission objectives even as ground stations lost communication with the 'Vikram' Lander in the last few minutes of its descent, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said on Saturday.

"The success criteria were defined for each and every phase of the mission and till date 90 to 95 per cent of the mission objectives have been accomplished and will continue to contribute to lunar science, notwithstanding the loss of communication with the Lander," an ISRO statement said.

The ground station lost contact with the Vikram Lander minutes before its touchdown on the Moon's South Pole in early on Saturday.

The Lander had followed a planned descent trajectory from its orbit of 35 km to just below 2 km above the surface and all its system and sensors functioned properly until this point.

"It proved many new technologies such as variable thrust propulsion technology used in the Lander," it stated.

Calling Chandrayaan-2 a highly complex mission, the agency said that it represented a significant technological leap compared to the previous missions undertaken by it.

It was aimed at studying the moon's surface, sub-surface and the exosphere.

The Chandrayaan-two's Orbiter, which is already in the intended orbit around the Moon, will send high-resolution images and enrich the understanding of Moon's evolution, mapping of minerals and water in its polar region.

AgustaWestland case: Court dismisses bail plea of Christian Michel

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, known for keeping a brisk pace of work, on Saturday delivered a speech at the ISRO Space Centre in the morning and addressed gatherings at Mumbai and Aurangabad, all within a gap of eight hours.

His address to the nation from ISRO control centre came after he had early Saturday witnessed the descent of Vikram module of Chandrayaan II mission which lost communication with ground stations at an altitude of 2.1 metres from the moon.

Modi returned to Delhi early on Friday after a three-day visit to Russia which was packed with engagements. He had a summit meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and took part in Eastern Economic Forum meeting in Vladivostok. He also had bilateral meetings with leaders of Japan, Malaysia, and Mongolia on the sidelines of the forum meeting.

He flew to Bengaluru on Friday evening to witness the descent of Chandrayan-2 mission. After his morning speech at ISRO control centre, Prime Minister reached Mumbai to lay the foundation stone of metro lines and launch other projects.

He later addressed a `mahila sammelan` in Aurangabad. BJP leaders say the Prime Minister has not had a single day of rest in the past over five years.

"It`s so simple. He lands Delhi at 4 am after 5000km journey, had a busy schedule whole day, including a video address, reached Bangalore, remained awake till 3 am, again reached ISRO at 8 am and left for Mumbai and Aurangabad to push his development agenda," party leader Vijay Chauthaiwale tweeted.

Sources also said that Modi never thought for a moment to avoid personally witnessing ISRO`s plan to soft-land Chandrayaan-2`s Vikram module on the lunar surface even though the success rate of soft landing missions is less than 40 per cent.

"The fact that the Prime Minister should avoid Bengaluru because the moon landing might not have been a complete success was not a consideration even for a moment," sources said on Saturday.

PM Modi watched the proceedings early Saturday as the lander began its descent towards the moon. The descent was perfect till an altitude of 2.1 km when communication from lander `Vikram` was lost to ground stations.

In his address to the nation from ISRO Control Centre on Saturday morning, Modi lauded their efforts towards Chandrayaan 2, India`s second moon mission and its first attempt at soft-landing on the surface of the moon.

He asserted that there will be "new dawn".

"India is proud of our scientists! They`ve given their best and have always made India proud. These are moments to be courageous, and courageous we will be," he said.
