More than 5,000 troops of the Indian Army's only Mountain Strike Corps will carry out a massive war game along with the Air Force in Arunachal Pradesh in October where Forces will be deployed to practice real war-like situation on the eastern front of the country.

The exercise will be the first of its kind along the China border by the newly-raised 17 Mountain Strike Corps which has been preparing for it under the Eastern Command for the last five to six months now.

"As part of the war games, the troops of the Tezpur-based 4 Corps will be deployed at a high altitude location to defend their 'territory' while a brigade-sized force (over 2,500 troops) of the 17 Mountain Strike Corps would be airlifted by the Indian Air Force to 'launch an offensive' against them," top Army sources told ANI.

The Indian Air Force will airlift the troops using its latest transport aircraft including the C-17, C-130J Super Hercules and the AN-32 to airlift the army troops from Baghdogra in West Bengal and deploy them close to the 'war zone' in Arunachal Pradesh, they said.

The troops of the 17 Mountain Strike Corps would be from the 59 Mountain Division and will include armoured regiments including battle tanks and infantry combat vehicles along with light howitzers and strike elements.

To make the 17 Mountain Strike Corps more effective during wartime in a mountainous region with China, the fighting formations under it are being converted into Integrated Battle Groups (IBGs) as part of Army Chief Gen Bipin Rawat's restructuring process.

Once the IBGs are formed, the formations will be converted into leaner and more efficient fighting units with the ability to strike deeper and faster against enemy targets, the sources said.

An IBG, which will be a little smaller than a division, will integrate the existing elements of infantry, tank regiments, artillery, engineers and signals. It will comprise six battalions of these elements and will be directly under a Corps.

Once the Army converts all its required fighting formations into IBGs, it would lead to the elimination of the brigades in the fighting structure.

The first IBG is coming up under the 9 Corps which looks after parts of Jammu and Punjab border with Pakistan.

Two more IBGs are ready for conversion under the 17 Mountain strike Corps and 33 Corps which are both tasked to fight wars on the Chinese front in the Northeast.

Britain has never apologised for the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre at Amritsar but the head of the Church of England prostrated himself to say sorry in a personal capacity and "in the name of Christ".

Britain has never apologised for the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre at Amritsar but the head of the Church of England prostrated himself to say sorry in a personal capacity and "in the name of Christ". British troops fired on thousands of unarmed men, women and children in Amritsar on April 13, 1919, killing 379 people according to colonial-era records. Indian figures put the total closer to 1,000. "I can't speak for the British Government as I am not an official of the British Government. But I can speak in the name of Christ," Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby said as he visited the location in northern India on Tuesday. I feel a deep sense of grief, humility and profound shame having visited the site of the horrific #JallianwalaBagh massacre in Amritsar today. Here, a great number of Sikhs – as well as Hindus, Muslims and Christians – were shot dead by British troops in 1919. pic.twitter.com/p5fDprIMbr — Archbishop of Canterbury (@JustinWelby) September 10, 2019 × "I am so ashamed and sorry for the impact of the crime committed. I am a religious leader, not a politician. As a religious leader, I mourn the tragedy we see here," he added at the site, known in India as Jallianwala Bagh. On Facebook, he added that his visit aroused "a sense of profound shame at what happened in this place. It is one of a number of deep stains on British history. The pain and grief that has transcended the generations since must never be dismissed or denied." The event 100 years ago marked a nadir in Britain's occupation of India, and served to boost Indian nationalism and harden support for independence. In 1997 Britain's queen laid a wreath at a site during a tour of India. But her gaffe-prone husband Prince Philip stole the headlines by reportedly saying that the Indian estimates for the death count were "vastly exaggerated". In 2013 David Cameron became the first serving British prime minister to visit Jallianwala Bagh. He described the episode as "deeply shameful" but stopped short of a public apology. Ahead of centenary commemorations earlier this year, Cameron's since-resigned successor Theresa May on told parliament that Britain "deeply regretted what happened and the suffering caused." But she too didn't say sorry.

The pipeline from Motihari in Bihar to Amlekhganj in Nepal will transfer petroleum products such as diesel, LPG, aviation turbine fuel etc.

Speaking at the inauguration through video conference, PM said, "our bilateral cooperation has increased in the past few years..and India is ready to help Nepal according to country's priority."

Calling the pipeline "One of the best examples of trade and transit between India and Nepal", PM Oli said, "Implementation of various India aided projects in Nepal have gathered momentum in recent years following the understanding between me and PM Modi."

Nepal's KP Oli also said the project will enhance "interconnected and interdependence" between India and Nepal.

The idea of the pipeline was first proposed in 1996 and finalised in 2014 during PM Modi's Nepal visit. It was approved by Indian Oil at a total cost of Rs. 324 crore in September 2015 but the work was delayed following the earthquake of 2015.

The pipeline will replace road transportation and ensure uninterrupted supplies. The pipeline is 69 km long with a capacity of 2 million tonnes per annum. Around 32.7km of the pipeline is in Indian territory and 36.2 km in Nepal's territory.

Inda is engaged in a number of projects in Nepal. Last year Integrated Check Post in Birgunj (Nepal) built with New Delhi's assistance was inaugurated during PM Modi's visit. Both leaders also inaugurated three-storied library for Nepal Academy and Nepal-Bharat Maitri Pashupati Dharmashala in Kathmandu.

Recalling the horrific 9/11 terrorist attack in the US, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in Mathura on Wednesday that terrorism has now become a "global threat" and an "ideology" not confined to any single nation and is deeply rooted and flourishing in Pakistan.

"Now terrorism has become an ideology which is not confined to the boundary of any nation. This is a global problem and has become a global threat whose deep roots are situated in our neighbouring country and are flourishing there," he said at "Swacchata Hi Seva" programme here.

"About a century ago, Swami Vivekananda delivered a historic speech in Chicago and the world came to know in-depth about our culture. But unfortunately, on the same September 11, a big terrorist attack that shook the world took place in America," said Modi.

He said that India has taken a bold step against terrorism in past and will continue to do so in future.

"The whole world needs to take a pledge and stand up against those who give shelter and training to the terrorist. India is very much capable of tackling the menace on its own. We have shown this in past and will continue to do so in future," said Prime Minister.

The PM also highlighted the need to eliminate single-use plastic in the country saying animals are dying because of plastic trash.

"The problem if the plastic is growing each day. You Brijwasis are well aware of how plastic becoming a major factor of animals` death.

Similarly, the marine animals, especially fishes living in rivers, ponds are also dying because of plastic pollution in the water bodies," he said addressing the inaugural event of National Animal Disease Control Programme.

He also urged people to carry eco-friendly bags while going to the market.

"Waste to Wealth is what is going to protect our environment. I request you to carry a cloth or a jute bag while going for shopping. I urge traders to use very less plastic for packaging. It is our duty to be responsible about the environment," he said.

The Prime Minister also urged self-help groups and young minds to work towards making India plastic-free country.

"I appeal to Self Help groups working in villages, social organisations, youth organisations, clubs, schools and colleges to join the campaign against single plastic use and make India clean and green," he said.

"We have to try that by October 2, we rid all our homes, offices, workplaces and surroundings of single-use plastics," Modi added.

Besides single-use plastic, the Prime Minister also talked about combating terrorism, climate change and sanitation drive at the event.

In its first reaction since US President Donald Trump called off talks with Taliban, India has called for direct talks between the Taliban and Afghan government and said outcome of any agreement should be based on constitutional legitimacy.

In its first reaction since US President Donald Trump called off talks with Taliban, India has called for direct talks between the Taliban and Afghan government and said outcome of any agreement should be based on constitutional legitimacy. India's envoy to United Nations, Syed Akbaruddin speaking at the quarterly debate on United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan said, "It is the Afghan people who will implement and bear the consequences of any agreements arrived at. Hence, outcomes which have constitutional legitimacy and a political mandate and are arrived at in an inclusive and democratic way alone can ensure stability.", adding, "We, therefore, support the Secretary General’s call for direct talks." Highlighting the issue of cross border terror, Indian envoy called for an atmosphere free of terror for peace and reconciliation. "The support and safe havens enjoyed from beyond Afghanistan’s borders by groups such as the Taliban, the Haqqani Network, Da'esh, as well as al-Qaeda and its proscribed affiliates, including the Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, must be addressed," he said. There has been a surge of violence in Afghanistan, which, Syed said, is deepening apprehensions that acts of terror are being used to jockey for a place of advantage in the negotiating process. US President over the weekend announced that he had planned to host Taliban at Camp David to hammer out a peace deal that could have seen American troops leaving Afghanistan after 18 years. India lauds Afghan cricket team in UN Indian envoy lauded the Afghan cricket team for their recent victories. "Afghan cricketers recorded, just less than 48 hours ago, their second victory in three cricket test matches that they have played thus far. Such a feat was last accomplished by any other country way back in the 19th century," Akbaruddin said. New Delhi is majorly supporting Afghan cricket team. It has helped build Kandahar cricket stadium which has a capacity of 14,000 and a stadium in Mazar-e-Sharif. Other than this, India is providing two “home grounds” in Greater Noida and Dehradun for Afghan team and also, technical and logistical support for players and the Afghanistan Cricket Board.

Baldev Kumar also stated that even Muslims in Pakistan are not as safe as life in the country is full of difficulties.

"Not only minorities but even Muslims are not safe there (Pakistan). We are surviving in Pakistan with a lot of difficulties. I request the Indian government to give me asylum here. I will not go back," Baldev Kumar told ANI.

In Pakistan, incidents, where Hindu, Sikh and Christian girls are forcibly converted to Islam and married to Muslim men, are reported regularly.

The recent incident of abduction, forcible marriage and religious conversion of a Sikh girl of Nankana Sahib is a telling example.

A former MLA from Imran Khan's PTI, who is seeking political asylum in India over atrocities on minorities in Pakistan, on Tuesday asserted that Hindus and Sikhs are being "tortured" in the neighbouring country. Baldev's admission once again exposed Pakistan's record of using unfair means of treatment against the minority communities. A former PTI MLA from Barikot in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) assembly, Baldev is in India along with his family to seek political asylum. Baldev, 43, no longer wants to return to Pakistan and has alleged that minorities, including Hindus and Sikhs, are being prosecuted in Pakistan. Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday remembered late Arun Jaitley saying that the senior BJP leader, who passed away after a prolonged illness last month, had played a major role in his acquittal in "legal battle".

"He stood by my side firmy like a stone whenever I had to face difficult times in my life. He supported me on all fronts, be it related to the party, legal battle or something else. If I come out of that battle, it was because Arun ji's played a major role in it," Shah said at an event organised by the BJP to pay tributes to the departed leader.

Praising Jaitley for his friendly behaviour, Shah said, "One of his characteristics was establishing friendly relations with people from across the parties. He had mastered the art of making friends of below and over his age."

Shah also said that Jaitley, who died last month, played a major role in the formation of Goods and Services Tax (GST) and ensured that the tax reform did not fall in a political trap.

"His demise is a major loss of the party, politics and the country itself," the Union Minister said.

BJP working president Jagat Prakash Nadda also remembered Jaitley as an "eloquent speaker, avid politician, and an advisor for everyone", adding that his demise was an "irreparable and personal loss".

Nadda continued, "Whenever I felt as if I were on the brink of (mental) collapse, he supported and encouraged me."

Speaking on the occasion, he said that Jaitley's demise had created a vacuum in the BJP and the Indian politics which could not be filled in the near future.

"Even opposition regarded him as a scholar and a visionary politician. The presence of all opposition party leaders here is a testament to his ability to work together with everyone," Nadda stated.

He said that Jaitley had been committed to public life and did not care about his career when he spent 19 months in jail during the emergency. "He influenced a large number of students to participate in Jai Prakash Narayan's movement. As students, we were influenced by his speeches and were ready to follow the path," Nadda said.

The 'Shradhanjali' programme was held in the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here. Jaitley's wife Sangita, daughter Sonali and son Rohan were present on the occasion.

Several diplomats and dignitaries including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and opposition leader like NCP chief Sharad Pawar were in attendance.

Jaitley passed away at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at the age of 66 in New Delhi on August 24.

Australian government officials advised India to ban Chinese technology maker Huawei Technologies Co Ltd from supplying parts for a rollout of a high-speed telecommunications network, Australian newspapers reported on Tuesday.

Officials from anti-cyber espionage body the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) were asked about an Australian ban on using the Chinese technology giant to build 5G networks when a delegation visited New Delhi last week, The Australian Financial Review and The Australian reported.

"Indian officials were keen to get an understanding of how the Turnbull government arrived at the decision to ban Huawei, and multiple discussions have been held over the matter," the AFR said, referring to a movement led former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull in 2018.

The delegation last week, led by Australian ambassador for cyber affairs Tobias Feakin, "explained in detail why high-risk vendors had been banned from Australia's 5G network," The Australian reported.

India had also consulted the United States on its Huawei ban, the newspaper added, without providing any source.

Australia in 2018 became the first country to ban Huawei from supplying equipment for a 5G mobile network, citing national security risks, a move the Chinese company criticised as being "politically motivated".

A Reuters email to a Huawei media representative in Australia, listed on the company's website, received a bounceback notification.

The ASD did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
