Doctors at government hospitals in Karnataka have been staging a sit-in for five days to protest against repeated cases of assault, demanding action against the attackers.

''I am not a terrorist, I am a doctor and I don't deserve to die at my workplace'', read a placard held by one of the 1000 government doctors protesting against another case of assault. The junior residents have been staging a sit-in for five days now, demanding action against the attackers. The incident itself took place on November 1 at Minto Hospital run by the Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute. At 3.30 pm, 30-35 members from Kannada Rakshana Vedike, a pro-Kannada organisation, barged into the hospital OPD premises.&nbsp;

The protesters were demanding compensation for several patients who had lost their eyesight following cataract surgeries in July this year. When the junior female doctor refused to speak to them, they allegedly heckled her and assaulted her physically.&nbsp;

''They demanded that the junior resident answer the questions being raised by the association. The doctor responded by saying 'I know Kannada. But I do not wish to speak with you'' which was inferred as 'I do not wish to speak in Kannada'. There was another case of assault on a male doctor on the same day for which we have also submitted the evidence. There is also evidence of mental abuse and physical manhandling by using expletives on the female doctor. They are not supposed to barge into the hospital without prior intimation. We have filed an FIR and they are non-bailable offences which warrants immediate action. But no action has been taken so far. This protest is to demand action against those responsible for this attack'', says Dr Venugopal, member of the Resident Doctors' Association.&nbsp;

The government on Monday announced compensation of Rs 3 lacs for patients who lost their eyesight and asked the protesting doctors to return to duty. But the doctors have been adamant on not returning to duty until the perpetrators are punished. ''Even the victims who lost their eyesight have grievances. The doctors have their own grievances. The police are taking action as per law. Forcing a procedure is not fair. We are educated people. The system is built for the people. Whatever their concern, we are here to address it. If they don't have confidence, how can the system run?'' said Ashwath Narayan, Deputy CM, Karnataka.&nbsp;

Female doctors were particularly shaken up after the incident where the doctor was physically assaulted by Ashwini Gowda. ''We work round the clock in casualty and ICU irrespective of gender. We are all doctors here. But it is a very sensitive issue that a female doctor got attacked. The government should take up the matter. There will be fear among students and parents. Our parents send us here to achieve well in our profession. But now they are worried for the safety and lives of their children. This is an important issue that is not getting the attention it deserves from the common man'', says Dr Rekha.&nbsp;

Doctors from Vani Vilas Hospital, Bowring Hospital, Minto Hospital and Victoria Hospital participated in the sit-in and have threatened to make it an indefinite strike if there is a delay in taking action against the attackers. ''There are many laws that have been brought to protect us. But numerous incidents of violence occur against medicos. None of the laws are effectively implemented. Every time we protest, they promise to tighten protection. But action against the culprits is never taken. This encourages more such acts'', says Dr Rekha.

With just three days left before the opening of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/siddhant-sibbal-on-terror-camps-spotted-near-kartarpur-259842">Kartarpur corridor</a> on November 9, Pakistan is yet to allow the visit of Indian advance teams to Kartarpur Gurudwara to check the arrangements that have been made and also hasn't given confirmation to the list New Delhi had sent of prominent Indian Sikh leaders who are part of the inaugural jatha.&nbsp;

Sources said Pakistan refused to "extend full cooperation" which is against the "spirit of pilgrimage" and this "despite Pakistan's insistence" on levying $20 service fee on the pilgrims.

India had shared the list of 575 pilgrims which will go in the inaugural jatha to the Kartarpur Sahib and includes former PM Dr Manmohan Singh, Union Ministers Hardeep Puri and Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Punjab Chief Minister Amrinder Singh and several MPs and MLAs from Punjab.

Islamabad has made a number of arrangements for the opening of Kartarpur corridor on its side which will be inaugurated by Pakistan PM Imran Khan but government sources said, "Pakistan has unilaterally decided on the programme and timing of the inaugural jatha" without taking input from the Indian side.

In fact, Islamabad hasn't even shared critical information like availability of medical facilities and security arrangements of pilgrims, Indian government sources said.&nbsp;

This comes even as Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan in a tweet last week said Sikh pilgrims coming from India for a pilgrimage to Kartarpur are not required to carry passports but only valid ID and won't be required to register ten days in advance.&nbsp;

Sources said this has created confusion since, in the MOU signed in October, the passport was a necessary requirement and Islamabad hasn't bothered to get back to India after Imran Khan's tweet announcement leading to confusion among the pilgrims.

Last year both India and Pakistan had agreed on the opening of the Kartarpur corridor to the Kartarpur Gurudwara on the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Devji. Founder of Sikhism Guru Nanak Devji, spent the last 18 years of his life in the Gurudwara which is just a few kilometres away from the International border with India.&nbsp;

West Bengal BJP unit chief Dilip Ghosh on Monday claimed that cows in the country produce milk which has gold in it and also added that foreign breeds are not "our gaumata" but "aunties".

"The country`s own breed of cows have a special characteristic. There is gold mixed in its milk and that is why the colour of their milk is golden. There is a `Nari` (blood vessel) that helps produce gold with the help of sunlight. So, we have to keep those (local) cows. If we drink `desi` cow milk, we will become healthy and can prevent diseases," he said at a `Gopa Ashtami` programme here.

"The breeds of cows that we bring from abroad are not cows. They are a kind of `janwar` (beast). These foreign breeds don`t sound like cows. Those are not our gaumata, but our aunties. It is not good for the country if we worship such aunties," he said.

The BJP leader asserted that cow is "our mother" and threatened of action against those who "misbehave" with the animal.

"Cow is our mother. We stay alive by consuming cow milk. So, if anyone misbehaves with my mother, I will treat them the way they should be treated. On the holy soil of India, killing cows and consuming beef is a crime," he said.

Ghosh courted controversy when he attacked "few intellectuals" for having beef on roads and asked them to consume `dog meat` at their homes.

"Few intellectuals eat beef on roads. I tell them to eat dog meat too. Their health will be fine..., but why on roads? Eat at your home," he said.

This is not the first time that Ghosh made controversial remarks on various issues.&nbsp;In September, Ghosh had claimed that "bribe" worth Rs 2 lakh was being offered to prove people were committing suicides in West Bengal due to National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Earlier this year, a case was registered against the West Bengal BJP chief for reportedly asking his party workers to beat up their TMC counterparts and police.

He made the purported comment in connection to the recent clashes between TMC and BJP party workers in the state.

A bull that consumes cashews and almonds in his diet might sound odd to some people. What is even more fascinating is that Bhima, a young bull, has participated in an annual cattle-sale festival with a selling price of USD 2 million (Rs 15 crore).&nbsp;

Arvind Jangid, owner of this six-year-old bull said that Bhima weighs 1300 kgs and each month expenditure of Rs 100,000-125,000 is incurred for his nurture and diet. The diet of this giant bull includes one-kilogram ghee, almonds, cashews, half a kilogram butter, honey, and milk. Interestingly, Bhima also gets a massage from a kg of mustard oil. The owner also said that four people look after this bull.&nbsp;

Bhima has participated in this year's Pushkar Mela. The Pushkar Mela is one the grandest international fair that is held every year in the month of November in the town of Pushkar in Rajasthan. Apart from celebrating the culture and colour of Rajashtan, the fair is also a lucrative platform for buying and selling of cattle, especially camel.&nbsp;

Pushkar fair is an amalgamation of three events: Pushkar cattle fair, Pushkar cattle fair and Pushkar festival. The fair kicked off on Monday and will conclude on November 12.

So, if your pocket allows you to buy Bhima, book your tickets for Pushkar and grab this massive creature.&nbsp;

India on Monday <a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/asean-summit-india-decides-not-to-join-rcep-259919">pulled out of</a> the proposed Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) stating that the agreement “does not satisfactorily address India's outstanding issues and concerns.”
&nbsp;
Prime Minister Modi, while speaking at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Thailand said that “neither the Talisman of Gandhiji nor my own conscience permits me to join the RCEP.”
&nbsp;
RCEP is a proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that was being negotiated between 16 countries - the 10 member states of ASEAN along with India, Australia, China, Korea, Japan, and New Zealand.
&nbsp;
While the exact details of what the agreement entails are yet to be released, its aim, as established in 2012 in Cambodia, was to increase trade by decreasing tariffs and barriers between member states, boost exports, and create an alternative market for investment.
&nbsp;
India chose to withhold from joining the trade agreement due to “significant outstanding issues, which remain unresolved”.

"The present form of the RCEP agreement does not fully reflect the basic spirit and the agreed guiding principles of RCEP,” Prime Minister <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/india-not-to-join-rcep-goes-against-countrys-core-interests-259904">Narendra Modi </a>said.

New Delhi’s stand on data localisation is one of the key issues at conflict as RCEP norms support the free flow of data which hampers India’s digital sovereignty. &nbsp;

According to NITI Aayog, the policy think tank of India, the country has a growing trade deficit with ASEAN member states and China. Participating in RCEP would have only widened these deficits.
&nbsp;
With the ongoing United States-China trade war, signing the trade agreement would have interfered with India's attempt to augment its ties with the United States.

China’s dumping policy also presented itself as a potential threat to India, where access to an open market might have lead China to dump its products in regional Indian markets. &nbsp;

India felt that there was “inadequate” protection provided to its domestic markets which would have had to suffer losses as cheaper products from China threatened to “flood” Indian markets.

The dairy industry was also expected to face the burden of the trade deal due to the introduction of competition from New Zealand and Australia.

India also failed to receive any assurance on its demand for greater market access and concerns over non-tariff barriers as China has in the past used these to curtail India’s exports to the country.

India expressed dismay at 2014 being set as the base year for tariff reductions instead of 2013. This would have gone against the country's interests as several import duties have gone up since 2014.
&nbsp;
RCEP is supposed to be one of the world’s largest trade pacts and the largest regional trading agreement yet. The member countries account for half of the world’s population and almost one-third of the Global Gross Domestic Product.

Becoming a member of the RCEP would have provided New Delhi with an alternative market, reducing its dependence on Western nation-states, an increase in export-oriented Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), and a boost to its service sector.

Although India currently backed out of one of the biggest free trade deals in the world, the remaining 15 members agreed on the negotiated terms and will be signing it next year.

The Jammu and Kashmir meteorological department has predicted widespread moderate to heavy snowfall in the union territory from Wednesday this week, making the beginning of winter in Kashmir.&nbsp;

As per MeT, an active western disturbance and its interaction with cyclone MAHA, which is currently lying over the East-central Arabian sea, is most likely to cause rain and snow in the Himalayan area. The disturbance will also be expected to cause a temporary disruption on surface transportation.

"This weather system is most likely to cause temporary disruptions on surface transportation especially overpasses like Zojila, Srinagar -Jammu, Leh-Manali Highway, Mughal Road, and other important passes," said a MeT official.&nbsp;

This spell is also expected to bring temperatures down in Ladakh and Kashmir valley. Located at 11,575 feet high Zojila pass has already received snowfall but the heavy snowfall every year closed the 434-km Srinagar-Leh national highway for almost 4-5 months and disconnects Ladakh from rest of the world through road.&nbsp;

To improve the worsening air quality in the national capital, the Supreme Court ordered a complete halt to stubble burning around Delhi. Stubble burning is regarded as one of the biggest contributors to air pollution and is generally done during this time of the year.&nbsp;

Responding to the plea filed by activists, the apex court said that people of India are losing "precious years" due to air pollution, adding that this cannot be allowed in a "civilised" country, reports AFP.

The Supreme Court also added that the entire police administration and the police department will be held liable if its latest directions are not followed.&nbsp;

Earlier on Tuesday, Delhi's air quality showed signs of improvement as it moved to "very poor" from the "severe" category. As per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) recordings, Delhi's overall air quality was marked at 397, which falls under the "very poor" category. Delhi's pollution levels started dropping down marginally later on Monday due to an increase in wind speed.&nbsp;

The IMD predicted light rains on November 7 in Delhi which can further improve the air quality.

Northern India, every year during this time faces the menace of smog, due to stubble burning, bursting of crackers, and construction activities as the cooler air gets mixed with pollutants from these activities that make&nbsp;the air toxic and difficult to breathe.&nbsp;

On Monday, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal implemented the odd-even rationing scheme, in which cars with odd and even number plates are allowed to hit streets on alternate days. Kejriwal described the first day of the scheme as a success adding that nearly 15 lakh cars were off the road which prevented pollution and traffic.

However, Vijay Goel, a member of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) defied the odd-even rules and called the scheme an election gimmick. Delhi is due for the legislative elections next year.&nbsp;

So far, steps such as banning construction activities in Delhi, parking an air purifier&nbsp;vehicle in front of Taj Mahal have been taken to reduce air pollution levels. Delhi schools are also closed until Wednesday.&nbsp;

As per a report by WHO, 14 Indian cities are a part of 15 most polluted cities in the world, including Delhi. Around 10 lakh people die each year in India due to pollution.&nbsp;

Businessman Robert Vadra on Tuesday took to social media site Facebook to criticise the exemptions granted to vehicles of VIPs by the Delhi government in its <a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/delhi-odd-even-scheme-starts-today-259850">`odd-even scheme`</a> to combat air pollution and stated that all must adhere to the law.

"I do hope this formula of inconveniencing regular commuters, will help in bringing down the levels of pollution in the city, rather than only decrease the traffic congestion on the roads. My one most significant grouse on this scheme is, why have we exempted all VIP vehicles to drive around in any vehicle with any number ODD or EVEN ?!", he wrote in a detailed facebook post.

"Since members of parliaments are elected by the people, and other VIPs in plump posts, are meant to be an example and by adhering to the rules they create, I think it`s clearly hypocritical," Vadra added.

Vadra also demanded for the regulations to be made equally applicable on all the citizens.

"We all must follow the rules for them to know, the difficulties for children, women who cannot drive, and men to make changes in their routines, regular transports also not being available to substitute in commuting. We must revolt for each citizen of Delhi should have to follow the rules and have no special exempt list for VIPs," Vadra further stated in his post.

In order to maintain the law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh during and after the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/supreme-court-reserves-ayodhya-verdict-after-40-days-of-hearing-256283">pronouncement of judgement</a> on the Ram Janambhoomi- Babri masjid case, the Centre has given Uttar Pradesh almost 4000 extra Paramilitary personnel.

A decision was made on Monday where the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has granted 15 companies of paramilitary forces to Uttar Pradesh immediately which will stay in the state till November 18.

According to a document exclusively accessed by ANI, the 15 companies of paramilitary forces include three companies each of BSF, RAF, CISF, ITBP and SSB.

The official communication also says that 15 more companies of Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) will reach Uttar Pradesh on November 11 to stay till November 18.

In an order dated October 30, the District Magistrate has prohibited all persons, organisations or groups from attempting to disturb social harmony through any programs or statements. Civilians have also been barred from keeping, using or demonstrating firearms, explosives, lathi or other sharp weapons. Licensed weapons have also been banned for use and demonstration at public events. A five-judge Supreme Court bench heard the Ayodhya case on a day-to-day basis for 40 days and reserved its verdict on October 16. The apex court is expected to deliver its verdict on a dispute over the ownership of 2.77 acres of land in Ayodhya district in Uttar Pradesh before November 17, when the Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi retires. The Hindu parties, during the hearing, had argued that the entire 2.77 acres of land is the birthplace or "janm sthan" of Lord Ram while the Muslim parties claimed the title over the land, saying Muslims had ownership of the land since 1528 when the mosque was built.

India will not be joining the mega trading deal - <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/vietnam-backs-india-at-rcep-says-want-trade-deal-with-all-16-countries-259891">Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership</a>&nbsp;(RCEP), as its key concerns have not been addressed with Prime Minister Narendra Modi making it clear that New Delhi will not compromise on its "core interests".

While speaking at the third RCEP meet in Bangkok, PM Modi&nbsp;said, "The present form of the RCEP agreement does not fully reflect the basic spirt and the agreed guiding principles of RCEP. It also does not satisfactorily address India's outstanding issues and concerns. In such a situation, it is not possible for India to join the RCEP agreement."

"When I measure the RCEP agreement with respect to the interests of all Indians, I do not get a positive answer. Therefore, neither the Talisman of Gandhiji nor my own conscience permits me to join the RCEP,&nbsp;" the Indian prime minister added.

The key issues that concerned New Delhi included inadequate protection against import surge, insufficient differential with China, keeping the base year as 2014 and no credible assurances on market access and non-tariff barriers.

Meanwhile, ASEAN sources reacting to the development called it a "win win outcome" with "both side getting to inform their constituencies back home that they got a deal (RCEP 15) &amp; India gets to tell its constituencies that India held out to safeguard domestic interests."

Adding, "If a deal could be struck before the 15 complete their legal scrubbing, then it could be 16 members. If not, 15 will proceed ahead without India. &nbsp;Meanwhile, 15 will be able to benefit, although not as much as with India in RCEP."

Calling "RCEP deal is better for the world economy",&nbsp;ASEAN sources said "RCEP deal bucks the trend of protectionism being equated with nationalism."

The negotiation for the deal started in 2012 in Cambodia and will be one of the biggest Free trade agreement in the world.

Not possible for India to join RCEP agreement: PM Modi in Bangkok

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday urged the citizens to use carpooling in order to contain the worsening air quality in the national capital even as the proposed odd-even scheme kicked in from 8am on Monday morning.&nbsp;

The odd-even scheme is a car rationing system aimed at combating pollution, by allowing the cars with odd and even number plates to ply on the roads of the national capital on alternate days.

The scheme, which kicked in today will be in place till November 14 except Sunday, November 10 and will be applicable from 8 am to 8 pm.&nbsp;

The car rationing scheme comes at a time when the national capital region (NCR) is battling with severe to very severe level of air pollution.

Urging citizens to follow the scheme, Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal wrote on Twitter, "Hello Delhi, the odd-even scheme is starting from today, in order to reduce air pollution. Do follow odd-even for the sake of your health, your children`s health and your family`s breath. Share car, this will help increase friendship, build relationships, save petrol and reduce pollution."&nbsp;

Kejriwal said on October 17 that the odd-even vehicle rationing scheme will only be implemented on "non-transport four-wheeled vehicles", exempting two-wheelers and emergency vehicles.

Persons with disabilities, vehicles carrying school students and electric vehicles are exempted from the rationing scheme.&nbsp;

However, this time private CNG vehicles will come under its ambit.&nbsp;

Delhi government has also said that only those women drivers who will steer the vehicle alone or with other women on-board or with a child less than 12 years of age will be exempted.

The move has already invited criticism from BJP and Congress, with leaders of both parties cornering Delhi government over the same.

Senior BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Vijay Goel had on Sunday said that he will hold a symbolic protest against the Odd-Even scheme of the Delhi government and will ride through the streets of Delhi on Monday in his car to oppose the move.&nbsp;

He termed the scheme as an "election stunt" and a "drama".

Congress leader JP Agarwal also criticised the move and said that it was too late for the Delhi government to act on the pollution issue.

The violation of the rules in the restricted hours will attract a fine of Rs 4000.&nbsp;

The diplomatic community in Delhi is all set to go into a huddle over the pollution menace in Delhi. The schedule of the meeting is yet to be finalised but it comes even as the pollution level has reached a hazardous level in the city with the onset of the winters.

The diplomatic community in Delhi is all set to go into a huddle over the pollution menace in Delhi. The schedule of the meeting is yet to be finalised but it comes even as the pollution level has reached a hazardous level in the city with the onset of the winters. During the meet, a source told WION, " The diplomatic corps will not only talk about the issue but also hear suggestions of foreign diplomats stationed in Delhi", adding further, "It affects all of Delhi residents not only diplomatic corps" A number of foreign envoys and diplomats have expressed concerns about the rising pollution level in the city, with one diplomat saying, "Many people are affected. By embassy doctor's estimate, a cough that can go in a week goes on for a month or more even is a person is fine." Explaining, "we suffer as much as any other Delhi residents, we breath same air, and we have no special air purifying equipment". Another envoy said, "Many are very concerned about their health and their staff and their families. There is also the sensation that more can be done to avoid this yearly phenomenon, but little is done about it" An envoy who just took charge and began his tenure in Delhi said, "This is my first time to experience this! Really severe!" In fact, the flight of one envoy was diverted to another city due to low visibility in the national capital. Visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel last week called for replacing diesel buses with electric buses and said, "whosoever looked at the pollution level in Delhi will find a good argument to replace more of the buses". The air quality index of Delhi crossed 1000 in many parts on Sunday and the poor visibility led to the diversion of flights. Schools have been closed in the National capital as a preventive measure. Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi PK Mishra called for a high-level meeting on the high pollution level and it has been decided that the Cabinet Secretary will monitor the situation with states of Punjab, Haryana and Delhi on a daily basis.

Delhi odd-even scheme to start today as air quality deteriorates

New Delhi banned half the Indian capital's private cars from its roads on Monday as the megacity's 20 million people spluttered with stinging eyes in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/diplomatic-corps-expresses-concern-over-delhi-pollution-says-we-suffer-like-rest-of-delhi-259764">worst pollution in three years</a>.

As smog levels exceeded those of Beijing by more than three times, authorities also parked a van with an air purifier near the Taj Mahal,&nbsp;the iconic 17th-century marble mausoleum 250 kilometers (150 miles) south of Delhi,&nbsp;in a bid to clean the air in its surrounds.

With the pollution causing a rush of respiratory complaints at hospitals and the diversion of 37 flights on Sunday, a new law came into effect restricting cars from the capital's roads to alternative days, depending on if their number plate ends in an odd or even number.&nbsp;

More than 600 police teams were deployed at road intersections in the capital with the power to hand out fines of 4,000 rupees (nearly $60) to transgressors

Exempt from the restrictions were Delhi's seven million motorbikes and scooters, public transport and cars carrying only women, stoking criticism that the measures were ineffective.

"There is smoke everywhere and people, including youngsters, kids, elderly are finding it difficult to breathe," Delhi's chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said in a Twitter video. "Eyes are burning. Pollution is that bad."

Construction was banned temporarily late last week in the world's most polluted capital city, while schools have been closed until Wednesday, with the city government handing out free pollution masks to children.

"I have a headache every day I wake up. It's suffocating to breathe sometimes. And inflammation in the nostrils and all. And eyes also. Like it kind of burns," Ankusha Kushi, a student, told AFP.

As Delhiites woke up on Monday, levels of particulates measuring less than 2.5 microns -- so tiny they enter deep into the respiratory tract,&nbsp;were at 613 micrograms per cubic metre of air, according to the US embassy in Delhi.

The World Health Organisation's recommended safe daily maximum is a reading of 25.

In central Delhi, the state air quality institute rated levels of the tiny particulates,&nbsp;which can be deadly over the long term,&nbsp;as "severe".

Bollywood megastar Priyanka Chopra Jonas posted a selfie in pollution mask on Instagram and said it was "hard to shoot" in Delhi.

Fourteen Indian cities including the capital are among the world's top 15 most polluted cities, according to the World Health Organization.&nbsp;

One study last year said that a million Indians died prematurely every year as a result.

With local elections due in Delhi in early 2020, the crisis has also become a casualty of political bickering, with each side blaming the other.&nbsp;

Kejriwal, who likened Delhi to a "gas chamber" on Friday, said the city had done its part to curb pollution and that the burning of wheat stubble residue on farms outside the capital had to be stopped.

India's supreme court too stepped-in, slamming the authorities for failing to curb pollution and asked them to tighten rules against violators.&nbsp;

Car rule 'a stunt'&nbsp;

But national environment minister Prakash Javadekar accused Kejriwal of politicising the issue, while an MP from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) violated the odd-even car rule as a "symbolic protest" by driving a car that was barred under the scheme.

Experts warned that both state and national governments needed to go beyond short-term remedies.

Stop-gap solutions "can't be a substitute for addressing the major long-term chronic sources of air pollution", Daniel Cass, from global non-profit Vital Strategies, told AFP.

Changing agricultural practices, switching electricity generation sources and accelerating the conversion of home heating from charcoal to natural gas were also key measures in the pollution fight, Cass said.

Siddharth Singh, a climate policy expert, said the traffic restrictions are "ineffective".

"If air pollution was solely due to the vehicular traffic, then this would be a solution. Right now it cannot be a solution because motorised private transport has a very small share in the whole pie," Singh told AFP.
