The Jammu and Kashmir government is planning to revive river transport in the Kashmir Valley. Three bus boats have been brought from New Zealand to ply on river Jhelum in Srinagar. This is after decades that a river transport facility would be thrown open for tourists and the public as well.

People can take this boat ride from the Lasjan area of Srinagar to the interior of downtown. The Lieutenent Governor (LG) of Jammu and Kashmir has pushed for this initiative with the tourism department. They say that it will be the cheapest mode of transport.

"This is the revival of water transport in Srinagar, It will start from next month, we have procured all the equipment. I think it can be the optimal utilisation of water resources and it will be the means of transport in future. It will be way cheaper than road transport. In the world it's cheapest mode of transport. We have a fleet of three boats and in future they will procure more. All the decks are ready," said Imran Malik, Director, Private company.

Each boat has 35 seats with air conditioning. And the whole cover is made of glass. It will make the passengers enjoy the view of Srinagar city and make it a memorable ride. The tourism department will promote it so that more and more people take this mode of transport while travelling in the city.

"This is the first kind of this boat, which the people of Kashmir will be seeing, this is a bus boat which we have imported from New Zealand and it has a capacity of 35 passengers including 5 crew members. The plan is that it will ply from Batawara to Veer Chattabal. This will have 6 stops and we are doing trial runs and we will hand over it to JK Tourism. It's a type of tourist attraction, it will be available to tourists and locals. It's an add-on to the road transport, the roads are congested and if we get 5-6 of these in future this will help take the pressure off from road transport." said Abdul Hanan, Manager.

The engineers of the boat have come from Mumbai and will be training the locals in case there are any technical issues with the bus boat.

"I am training local engineers so that if there is an issue they can handle it. I am also telling them how to run this boat. If there is any issue ever then we can even take care of the problem remotely," said Bharat Gupta, Engineer.

The current situation at the Line of Actual Control(LAC) in eastern Ladakh dominated the meeting between the Indian external affairs minister S Jaishankar and the Chinese foreign minister in Dushanbe.

During the meeting, the Indian side clearly told the Chinese side that "unilateral change of status quo is not acceptable" and called for "resolving the remaining issues along the LAC in eastern Ladakh at the earliest" according to the readout by the ministry of external affairs.

The meet took place after a gap of more than ten months. Both ministers had last met in person on the sidelines of the SCO FMs meet in Moscow in September of 2020 in the aftermath of the Galwan incident in which India lost 20 soldiers due to Chinese aggressive actions.

Recalling the February pact between the two countries that led to disengagement at Pangong lake, EAM called for "resolving the remaining issues along the LAC in eastern Ladakh at the earliest". While disengagement at Pangong Lake is over, the situation in areas like Hots Springs and Gogra remains the same.

According to the Indian readout, EAM pointed out to the Chinese State Councillor that the "successful disengagement" in the Pangong Lake area earlier this year had "created conditions for resolving the remaining issue" and "it was expected that the Chinese side would work with us towards this objective."

He highlighted that the "situation in remaining areas is still unresolved" and "prolongation of the existing situation was not in the interest of either side" which was "visibly impacting the relationship in a negative manner."

After the Galwan incident, India had increased scrutiny on Chinese investment and banned a number of Chinese apps. The sentiment in the country has also turned against Beijing to an all-time high last seen in the 1962 India-China war.

During the talks on Wednesday, the focus was also on holding the next round of military talks. Both sides already have had a diplomatic round of talks, known as Working Mechanism for Consultation & Coordination(WMCC) in June.

"Peace negotiations in earnest is the only answer. An acceptable compromise that reflects Doha process, Moscow format and Istanbul process is essential. The future of Afghanistan cannot be its past. A whole new generation has different expectations. We should not let them down,’’ Jaishankar said at the meeting.

Twitter has told a parliamentary panel in India it is deeply committed to the people of the country, and said it is striving to comply with the new IT guidelines.

"We are keeping the government of India apprised of progress at every step of the process," Twitter said.

The company said it has appointed an interim Chief Compliance Officer (CCO) and an interim Resident Grievance Officer and is looking to fill the position of a law enforcement nodal officer.

The social media site said that it has outlined its concerns to industry groups like CII and FICCI regarding the guidelines and digital media ethics code rules, 2021.

It told the panel that timelines proposed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology are challenging to fulfil and meet.

"This was further exacerbated by the magnitude of the health crisis confronting the country," it added, referring to the Covid pandemic.

"An extension for the industry would have helped navigate the current challenges posed by the pandemic and enable seamless implementation of the IT Rules 2021," Twitter told the parliamentary panel.

The company said it agrees with the ministry on free expression and safety to work in tandem both online and in the real world.

Twitter said it has systems in place to acknowledge grievances submitted to it within 24 hours and it intends to "dispose of them within 15 days."

The American tech giant said it respects the Constitution and laws of India, adding it had taken steps on 14 blocking orders and 7 emergency blocking orders so far.

"We remain committed to working with democratic governments across the world, including in India to serve the public conversation, provide transparency, and protect freedom of expression," Twitter said.

Even as the situation in Afghanistan deteriorates as the Taliban makes territorial gains, India's External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar has said a seizure of power by violence cannot be legitimised.

Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation-Afghanistan contact group meeting, Jaishankar said, "The challenge is to act seriously and sincerely on these beliefs. Because there are forces at work with a very different agenda."

"The world is against seizure of power by violence and force. It will not legitimise such actions" he added.

The situation in Afghanistan remains precarious. Earlier today, it emerged that the Taliban has captured the crucial Spin Boldak crossing with Pakistan. Fall of Spin Boldak is seen as symbolic in terms of the Taliban's gains.

Taliban officials said on Friday the Sunni Muslim insurgent group had taken control of 85 per cent of territory in Afghanistan, as the United States and others withdrew the bulk of their troops after 20 years of fighting.

Calling for "peace negotiations in earnest" as the "only answer", Jaishankar pointed to an "acceptable compromise that reflects Doha process, Moscow format and Istanbul process is essential".

He said, "future of Afghanistan cannot be its past" and a "whole new generation has different expectations" which "should not let them down".

In a few days' time, Chairman of the High Council for National Reconciliation Abdullah Abdullah and former Afghan president Hamid Karzai will be travelling to Doha, Qatar for talks with the Taliban. Previous rounds of Afghan government-Taliban talks, known as intra-Afghan talks, have been inconclusive.

At the meet in Dushanbe, which saw Afghanistan being represented by Afghan FM Hanif Atmar, India called for "independent, neutral, unified, peaceful, democratic and prosperous nation".

On Tuesday, Jaishankar and Afghan FM Atmar had held talks in which the latter lauds India's role in building regional consensus on Afghan peace process.

There is good news for the people interested in horse riding in the Kashmir Valley. The first of its kind horse riding school has been opened in central Kashmir's Budgam district.

''Fazlullah Farms'' will train the youth of the Valley to become professional horse riders who can represent Kashmir and India at the national and international level. The farm started by a young man named Ali Abbas himself a rider says a lot of people used to stop him while he rode horses, asking if he can teach them too.

''The idea was already in my mind a few years before but it came to fruition a few months back because I wanted people to ride horses. There are people who wanted to learn but didn't have enough money to buy a horse or keep one. So in order to teach them I started this school. The response has been surprising. We get 5-6 admissions everyday. We have 12 horses, eight for riding and two trainers and two helpers,'' said Ali Abbas, owner of Fazlullah farms.

Kashmir is a mountainous region and horse riding is not new. However, no one has ever taken this sport professionally. The Valley hasn't produced a good horse rider who can represent the UT or the country in competitions held across the world. But with the opening of this school, there are many who want to take this professionally.

Afghan Foreign Minister Mohammad Haneef Atmar has lauded India's "constructive role" in "strengthening regional consensus on the Afghan peace process".

The Afghan minister and Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar held an in-person bilateral in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation foreign ministers' meet.

"Minister Atmar underscored the constructive role of India in...the preservation of the achievements of the last two decades", an Afghan foreign ministry statement said. The country has seen women's rights, minority rights being granted, and increased liberty as compared to the Taliban era of the 1990s, which many countries have called to be preserved.

The meet comes amid increased violence in the country by the Taliban as American forces leave after two decades. While many districts have fallen into the hands of the Taliban, the Afghan forces are also giving tough resistance.

Referring to the escalation of the Taliban attacks in "collusion with foreign fighters and regional and international terrorist networks against civilians and the Afghan defense forces", Atmar said, "overcoming this common threat was of vital importance to regional security."

During the meet, many issues were discussed, such as India's cooperation with Afghanistan in various fields, including the joint fight against terrorism. The Afghan foreign minister also briefed about Afghan President Ghani's visit to Washington DC.

The Afghan foreign minister also had a meeting with Pakistani FM SM Qureshi and the contrast was evident with the Afghan side asking Islamabad to cut funding for the Taliban.

Terming the "presence of foreign fighters and regional and international terrorist networks alongside the Taliban a major threat to the region", Afghan FM emphasised "practical cooperation between regional countries, particularly Pakistan in closing shelters and ceasing funding sources of the Taliban."

Pakistan has been openly supporting the Taliban and its leaders have been meeting their cadres in the country. Quetta and Peshawar shuras are well-known Afghan Taliban decision-making bodies named after Pakistani cities.

The Afghan FM also asked Pakistani FM to "encourage" the group to "resume meaningful talks and find a political solution to the success of the Afghan peace process". Islamabad's influence over the Taliban is well known, something it has been flaunting as well with videos of Taliban delegation hugging the Pakistani foreign minister.

The Madras High Court imposed a fine of Rs 100,000 on Tamil actor Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, for importing an ultra-luxury car Roll Royce Ghost from England and refusing to pay entry tax on it.

He has been asked to pay the fine amount to the Chief Minister’s Covid-19 relief fund within two weeks.

Despite being among the top-earning stars in Tamil cinema, Vijay had approached the court saying that "extraordinary" entry tax was being imposed on the car which he imported in 2012. He had sought that the court withhold the relevant authorities from demanding or collecting entry tax.

According to the court, the petitioner had not even revealed his occupation and had left the same categories blank in the affidavit.

The court noted that "the petitioner, who is a reputed cine actor, is expected to pay the tax promptly and punctually. Tax is a mandatory contribution and not a voluntary payment or donation, which one decides on one’s own".

It reminded the actor that the system of taxation is the backbone of our nation’s economy and that it funds social welfare projects such as schools, hospitals, housing projects for the poor etc. it was also added that the same tax ensured the development of infrastructure, besides social security such as pension for elders, welfare schemes etc.

Ironically, Vijay himself acts as a crusader for the downtrodden in his films and waxes eloquent on poverty, deprivation and inequality. He has mouthed many a dialogue on corruption, GST (Goods and Services Tax), social justice etc. The billionaire actor was also seen taking a moral high ground, by cycling to his voting booth during the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections in April this year. While many criticized it as a publicity stunt, his fans said that the actor was sending a message about rising fuel prices, by cycling to a nearby voting centre.

Referring to Vijay’s large fanbase and stature as an entertainer, the Court said, Cine heroes rose as rulers of the state and, therefore, people of Tamil Nadu are of the impression that they are the real heroes. Thus, they are not expected to behave like a reel hero. "Tax evasion is to be construed as an anti-national habit, attitude and minister and unconstitutional. Their pictures are against corrupt activities in society. But, they are evading tax and acting in a manner, which does not align with the provisions of the Statutes " read the Court order.

Lashing out at the actor, the Court said filing a writ petition, avoiding payment of entry tax and keeping the writ petition pending for about nine years, can never be appreciated. It is not made clear even now, whether the entry tax has been paid or not and neither has his lawyer said anything about the same. It reminded Joseph Vijay that while the actor purchased the world's most prestigious car for his usage, he has not shown any respect for the money he earns from his fans, which is poor man’s hard-earned money. The statement was also a stern warning to all rich and powerful individuals who are defaulting on tax.

The Court ordered Vijay to pay entry tax within two weeks, by adjusting 20% of Entry Tax as ordered by the Court in the interim order dated 17/7/12, if already paid. In the case of non-payment, the Court ordered the relevant authorities to initiate all actions for recovering the tax, as per the Statutes.

Inviting applications for new interns, NASA recently shared some images of its former interns on Twitter. The idea seemed to be to showcase the diversity of people serving at the US space agency.

Among the pictures of four interns was one of an Indian American girl, sitting on a desk wearing a sweater sporting NASA logo and with Hindu god sculptures and posters in the background.

What followed was widespread trolling of her faith, with some asking how the US space agency, a scientific organisation, could allow somebody who believes in God. Some comments bordered on Hinduphobia.

Some users criticised the presence of the idols at the workspace of the Indian-origin intern, while others questioned NASA for putting up a stereotypical image of an Indian girl.

But the trolling has now backfired on the pundits, with supporters saying they were completely okay with the fact that the Indian NASA intern had Hindu idols beside her.

One user wrote on Twitter: "All those mocking her : Hijab, polygamy, child marriages, Niqab, prayers on road, etc are supposed to be respected under the concept of 'choice' and 'pluralism' but a Hindu lady practicing her faith has to be ridiculed. Carry on! Your bigotry will make her faith more stronger."

"So many people exposing their casual bigotry & racism.... while dissing on a minority Girl.. all because she's proud of her roots,” said another.

India's drug regulator Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) will be considering giving emergency use authorisation to Zydus Cadila's Covid vaccine ZyCV-D in a few more days. ANI reported the development quoting sources.

"Subject Expert Committee (SEC) is expected to meet this week and will review the data. However, final approval for EUA will be given only after a few meetings," sources were quoted as saying.

It was further informed that the SEC will examine data submitted by Zydus Cadila for children above 12 years. But if data found to be satisfied then final approval from DCGI may be granted in few days.

ZyCoV-D is a DNA Covid vaccine, which carries the genetic code for that part of a virus that triggers the immune system of the body.

According to sources, the continuous and rolling review of data is ongoing and even if SEC meeting takes place this week then final approval will take few more days.Earlier, on Friday, Dr VK Paul, Member (Health) of the NITI Aayog told ANI that a decision on the approval of Zydus Cadila`s COVID-19 vaccine is expected soon, adding that the data and evaluation would determine the outcome.ZyCoV-D is a three-dose COVID shot, the world`s first Plasmid DNA vaccine.
