The first goods train carrying stone chips to Bangladesh through the revived Haldibari-Chilahati rail link departed from Damdim station of Jalpaiguri district in West Bengal on Saturday.

With this, the commercial services on the railway link between India and Bangladesh, which had been defunct since 1965, have started.

The Haldibari-Chilahati rail link between India and then East Pakistan (later Bangladesh) was operational till 1965. Last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina virtually inaugurated the rail link.

However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, regular train services could not be started on the section.

"The first goods train carrying stone chips to Bangladesh through the revived Haldibari --Chilahati rail link leaves from Damdim station of Alipurduar Division in NFR (Northeast Frontier Railway) on 31.07.2021," the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) in a statement said.

The Haldibari-Chilahati rail link was part of the broad gauge main route from Kolkata to Siliguri but the war of 1965 effectively cut off all the railway links.

The rail link will provide a shorter route for the transit of goods into Bangladesh from Assam, West Bengal, Nepal, and Bhutan, the NFR said.

This rail link will enhance rail network access to the main ports, dry ports, and land borders to support the growth in regional trade and to encourage economic and social development of the region.

"Economic activities of these South Asian countries will also be benefitted from this new rail link," the statement read.

People living in the rural areas of Jammu and Kashmir will be provided with the same medical facilities that are available in cities now. Government is constructing 30 new oxygen plants in these far-flung areas and also providing high-standard medical equipment to these primary health hospitals.

The Jammu and Kashmir government with the help of the World Bank has been able to upgrade the medical Infrastructure in the Kashmir Valley. Previously, the people from rural areas had to come to the city for emergency cases. The inflow to the tertiary hospitals had increased manifold due to the Covid Pandemic.

And with the grant of 360 crores from the World Bank, people from the rural areas will benefit a lot. They won't have to come down to cities for medical treatments.

"Covid as a pandemic was a major challenge. The Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA) is implementing a 250 million dollar project. 50 million project for covid related infrastructure. We have provided the best medical equipment to the peripheral areas of Kashmir. The primary health centres and district hospitals of these villages will have all the facilities needed. The management has improved remarkably. Patients had to travel from these remote places to Srinagar or Jammu for medical care. But now they won't have to," said Abid Rashid Shah, CEO, ERA

There are 30 new oxygen plants being set up across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. 15 will be constructed in Jammu while the rest in the Kashmir zone. 42 different types of latest Critical Care Medical Equipments have been procured and provided to these facilities. In central Kashmir's Budgam district, ERA is constructing a 500 LPMS oxygen plant at Charar-e-Shareef. This will cater to around 1.5 lakh people living in the area.

"This project is with regard to providing oxygen plants. There will be 15 plants in the Kashmir valley while 15 will be constructed in Jammu. This plant here in Chahrar-e-Shareef would be providing oxygen to 60 beds in a hospital. This will benefit the people living in villages as they have facilities available nearby now," said Shuja Qureshi, AEE, ERA.

The doctors working in these rural areas have appreciated the step and say that it will help them in treating patients in these primary care centres, district hospitals etc. Earlier any patient requiring high oxygen supply would be sent to a tertiary hospital in Srinagar or Jammu.

"We had to shift patients from these far flung areas to Srinagar for the requirement of high oxygen supply. Now that we have an oxygen plant here, we don't have to shift them any more. We can manage the patients here only. This is an excellent job done by the government and they made it in record time." said Dr Mushtaq, Surgeon at Sub-Division Hospital.

The installation of various vital medical equipment at these medical care facilities in the far-flung areas of Jammu and Kashmir will benefit the people and also take off the load of tertiary hospitals.

Top Army and police officials claimed on Saturday that security forces had killed 89 terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir this year, including seven Pakistani nationals, while maintaining that over 200 ultras remain active in the union territory.

"Seven of the 89 terrorists were FTs (foreign terrorists or Pakistanis).Although the number is lower than previous year, more top commanders have been slain this year "Vijay Kumar, Kashmir's Inspector General of Police (IGP), said.

He was speaking at a joint news conference with Lieutenant General Devendra Pratap Pandey, the Army's 15 Corps commander, and Major Gen Rashim Bali, the commander of the Victor Force in south Kashmir.

Lt Gen Pandey responded to a query regarding the number of militants in J&K by saying that around 200-225 ultras were operating across the UT.

He did say, however, that no successful infiltrations along the Line of Control (LoC) have occurred this year.

"There has been information about one or two infiltrations. We have launched operations, which are on to check or neutralise them (infiltrators). But, according to ground inputs, there has been no successful infiltration or intrusion in the 15 Corps zone in the Valley so far," LT Gen Pandey said.

China and India have missed a United Nations deadline to submit fresh targets for cutting their greenhouse gas emissions, officials said Saturday.

The world's two most populous countries are among dozens that ignored the deadline of July 30 set by the UN climate change agency to provide an update on their plans for curbing the release of planet-warming gases.

China is the country with the world's highest emissions, while India is third.

The United States, which submitted its new target in April, is the second-biggest global emitter.

UN climate chief Patricia Espinosa welcomed that 110 signatories of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change had met the cut-off date, which was extended from the end of 2020 due to the pandemic.

But she said it was "far from satisfactory" that only 58% had submitted their new targets in time.

Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Syria and 82 other nations also failed to update their nationally determined contributions, or NDCs, for the UN to include in a report it is preparing for an international climate change conference in November.

Espinosa noted that a previous report found countries were doing too little to meet the goal of keeping global warming below 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 Fahrenheit) by the end of the century compared with pre-industrial times.

The more ambitious target of capping warming at 1.5C (2.7F) is far out of reach.

"Recent extreme heat waves, droughts and floods across the globe are a dire warning that much more needs to be done, and much more quickly, to change our current pathway," said Espinosa.

"This can only be achieved through more ambitious NDCs."

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday carried out searches at 15 locations in Jammu and Kashmir in connection with two cases and arrested one Irfan Ahmed Dar, who provided logistic support and also arranged arms and ammunition for Lashkar-e-Mustafa (LeM) terrorists.

An NIA spokesperson said that the anti-terror probe agency carried out searches at nine locations in Jammu and Kashmir in connection with the LeM case which it registered in March this year, besides raiding six places in connection with the recovery of 5 kg IED from a Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist in Jammu on June 27 this year.

The official said that in the LeM case, the NIA, along with J&K police and CRPF, conducted searches at nine locations in Shopian, Anantnag and Jammu districts.

The official further said that the NIA recovered many digital devices, including mobile phones, hard disks, memory cards, pen drives and laptops, along with several booklets containing incriminating materials from the premises of the arrested accused and the suspects in the case.

"After the searches, Dar, a resident of Anantnag, was arrested on Saturday," the official said.

The official added that preliminary investigation has revealed that Dar was involved in the conspiracy of carrying out terrorist activities in collusion with other arrested accused persons.

Another NIA official said, "Dar provided logistic support to the members of the newly formed LeM. He was also instrumental in procuring arms and ammunition and then providing them to the LeM terrorists."

The NIA had registered a case in connection with the conspiracy hatched by LeM and its chief, Hidayat-ullah Malik, who recced the office of National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval, working at the behest of Pakistan-based proscribed terrorist organisation Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), to carry out terrorist activities in Jammu in March this year.

Last week, the NIA had arrested two LeM terrorists -- Mohammaf Arman Ali aka Arman Mansuri, and Mohammad Ehsanullah aka Guddu Ansari -- both residents of Bihar`s Saran district. The duo was involved in transportation of two separate consignments of illegal arms and ammunition from Bihar to Mohali and Ambala.

"The said weapons were further transported to Hidayat Ullah Malik, a self-declared commander-in-chief of LeM in Jammu and Kashmir," the official said.

The case was originally registered on February 6 this year in Jammu in connection with a conspiracy hatched by the members of LeM, an offshoot of Jaish-e-Mohammed, to carry out terrorist activities in J&K with an intention to threaten the sovereignty, integrity and security of India.

The NIA had taken over the probe on March 2.

TOKYO (Reuters) - American gymnast Simone Biles has withdrawn from event finals for vault and the uneven bars at the Tokyo Olympics, U.S. Gymnastics said on Saturday. Biles, who continues to wrestle with mental health issues, had earlier withdrawn from the women`s all-around final on Thursday and the team final on Tuesday after a poor mark on her opening vault. The 24-year-old, however, might yet make an appearance at the Tokyo Games having not ruled herself out for floor exercise on Monday and beam on Tuesday. "Today, after further consultation with medical staff, Simone Biles has decided to withdraw from the event finals for vault and the uneven bars," said USAG in a statement. By Mitch Phillips TOKYO (Reuters) -Alex Yee delivered a superb final leg as Britain won the inaugural triathlon mixed relay gold medal on Saturday, their four-person team completing a wonderful week for the country, after also collecting two silvers in the individual events. The United States took silver as their two men finally bagged their first male golds in the sport, with three-times world champions France taking bronze. It was an emotional triumph for Jonny Brownlee, who won individual bronze and silver in 2012 and 2016 and finally bagged a gold to enable him to share family bragging rights with double individual champion and big brother Alistair. Jess Learmonth led Britain out, while Georgia Taylor-Brown and anchor leg Yee, the individual silver winners, completed the impressive all-round display. The victory takes Britain’s medal tally to eight, including three golds, since the sport was introduced to the Olympics in 2000. "The Olympics is complete – it feels absolutely amazing. My third Olympics and I can finally walk away with gold," said Brownlee. "The Olympics is always special but to do it as a team is absolutely amazing." The race format features teams of two men and two women, who each complete a short-course race of 300 metres swim, 6.8km bike and 2km run and makes for fast-paced action. First-leg Learmonth had a lightning T2 to open a small gap going in to the run but Britain, the U.S., Germany and the Netherlands were all together handing over. It was carnage in the transition area after the first handover, with half the exhausted first-leg women scattered over the blue carpet and medical staff hauling them to their feet and dragging them clear as the heat took its toll. The four teams remained together after the second bike leg but Brownlee flew out of T2 and immediately opened a gap, which he extended to nine seconds over the U.S. with a gutsy run on his last competitive appearance over the shorter distances as he plans to move up to Ironman. Taylor-Brown swum superbly to stretch the lead to 23 seconds, with Taylor Knibb forging clear from the chase pack to leave the U.S. clear in second. Taylor-Brown handed over to Yee, probably the fastest runner in the field with the 2018 British 10,000m track title to his name. On the last leg double world champion Vincent Luis overhauled Morgan Pearson on the swim then drove on strongly to catch Yee on the bike. Two years ago Luis beat Yee in a photo finish in the Tokyo test event but the young Briton made sure there was no repeat as he got a break in transition and poured on the power to immediately open a telling gap and he eventually won by 14 seconds. Behind him Morgan Pearson overhauled Luis for silver. "I was pretty scared taking over, the guys had been perfect and I wanted to do it justice," Yee said. "When Luis came past I knew I just had to get on there as my run is my strength so I had to hang on. Then I just went for it right at the start of the run to get an early gap." Taylor-Brown swum superbly to stretch the lead to 23 seconds, with Taylor Knibb forging clear from the chase pack to leave the U.S. clear in second. Then I just went for it right at the start of the run to get an early gap." Olympics-Triathlon-Britain win first-ever mixed-relay gold

By Simon Evans TOKYO (Reuters) - American Caeleb Dressel stormed to the men`s 100m butterfly gold medal on Saturday with a world record time of 49.45 to pick up his second individual gold of the Tokyo Games and Australia`s Kaylee McKeown timed her swim perfectly to win the 200m backstroke. Dressel, the world champion in the event, beat Hungary`s Kristof Milak, the gold medallist in the 200m fly, by 0.23 seconds. The powerful American, who also won gold in the 100m freestyle, was fastest out of the blocks and never looked in danger, though Milak came back hard, closing the gap down the straight. Dressel has a busy morning -- he has the 50m freestyle semi-finals coming up and is likely to swim in the final of the mixed medley relay about 30 minutes after that. McKeown, who had already won the 100m backstroke gold, turned up the pace on the final lap to power past Kylie Masse after the Canadian held the lead for the first 150. The Australian won in a time of 2:04.68 with Masse 0.74 behind and McKeown`s team mate Emily Seebohm taking the bronze medal. Australia`s women have now picked up six of the country`s seven gold medals in the pool. (Reporting by Simon Evans; Editing by Peter Rutherford)

Saudi Arabia has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Middle East Green Initiative Summit, which will take place in October. Through the initiative, the country aims to lead regional efforts in combating climate change. The invite by the Saudis shows India's centrality on climate issues.

The Middle East Green Initiative, along with the Saudi Green Initiative, was announced in March of this year by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He said, "The Saudi and Middle East Green Initiatives are only a start. The Kingdom, the region and the world need to go much further and faster in combating climate change".

Under the Middle East Green Initiative, Saudi Arabia will work with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states and Middle Eastern countries to plant 40 billion trees in that part of the world. The project is expected to restore an area equivalent to 200 million hectares of degraded land.

Under the Saudi green initiative targets, the country aims to plant 10 billion trees on its territory, reduce carbon emissions by more than 4% of global contributions, raise protected areas to more than 30% of total land area, and put renewables at 50% of the Kingdom's energy mix by 2030.

According to Saudi government estimates, due to climate challenges like desertification, the country faces huge risks, especially in economic aspects. The region loses $13 billion annually because of dust storms. Air pollution from greenhouse gases is also estimated to have shortened life expectancy in Saudi Arabia by 1.5 years.

PM Modi last visited Saudi Arabia in October of 2019, during which a Strategic Partnership Council Agreement was signed. Riyadh identifies India as one of the Kingdom’s Strategic Partner Countries under ‘Vision 2030’. The visit also saw the launch of the Rupay card, which especially benefits the large Indian expat community in the country.

Other leaders have also been invited to the Saudi Arabia climate summit, which includes Pakistan PM Imran Khan. Remember, Khan was not invited to the US climate summit even as Bangladesh and Bhutan from the region were present at the mega summit.

Earlier this year, PM Modi took part in the Climate Leaders’ virtual Summit chaired by President Biden. During that summit, PM Narendra Modi and President Joseph Biden launched the India-US Climate and Clean Energy Agenda 2030 Partnership. The two elements of the partnership are the Strategic Clean Energy Partnership and the Climate Action and Finance Mobilization Dialogue. US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry has also visited Delhi.

The twelfth round of top commanders-level talks between India and China are underway at Moldo on the Chinese side in the Ladakh region on Saturday.

The talks are happening after a gap of three months. Indian military delegates are discussing disengagement at friction areas like Hot Springs, Gogra and 900 square km Depsang plains.

The Indian delegation is led by Leh-based XIV Corps chief Lt Gen PGK. Menon and Additional Secretary (East Asia) in the Ministry of External Affairs, Naveen Srivastava.

The Chinese military delegation is led by Commander of the PLA's Western Theatre Command Xu Qiling, who was appointed earlier this month.

The build-up in Depsang was not being considered part of the current standoff that started in May last year as escalation here took place in 2013. India has insisted during recent military commander meetings to resolve all issues across the Line of Actual Control.

"The initial attempt will be to resolve Gogra and Hot Springs. Finding a solution to Depsang might be tricky and take longer," said the officer.

In April, during the 11th round of Corps Commander level talk, the focus was disengagement on friction points at Gogra, Hot Springs and Depsang. On February 20, Indian and Chinese militaries held the 10th round of dialogue to de-escalate tension at the Line of Actual Control.

Till now, apart from 11 rounds of Corps Commanders-level talks, the two forces have also held 10 Major Generals level, 55 Brigadiers-level talks and 1,450 calls over the hotlines.

China has been enhancing military infrastructure across the Line of Control.

Looking at it, India has changed its posture towards China, unlike its previous defensive approach that placed a premium on fending on Chinese aggression, India is now catering to military options to strike back and has reoriented its military accordingly.

India has reoriented around 50,000 troops whose main focus will be the disputed border with China. The reorientation comes when China is refurbishing its existing air-fields in Tibetan Plateau that will allow twin-engines fighter aircraft to be stationed, sources said.

In addition, China has also brought troops from the Tibet Military region to the Xinjiang region that passes through the Karakoram range down south Uttarakhand.

Further, they have deployed larger numbers of long-range artillery and are rapidly building infrastructure in the Tibetan Plateau.

So far, the troops of two Himalayan giants have disengaged from both the banks of Pangong Tso in February this year.

It is not just rice that India is supplying to the kitchens in China. Along with rice, the demand for chillies has increased too. China, one of the primary chilly producers of the world, has now started importing the key ingredient required for its cooking from India.

"While China produces over 45 per cent of world chillies, it has started importing the same as they find Indian chillies better and spicier," an exporter told India Narrative.

News portal MoneyControl in a report echoed the same sentiment. It said that in recent years, Chinese people have taken a fancy to Indian chillies, which are hotter than what is produced elsewhere. The report added that China now accounts for nearly half of the export of hot spice.

According to the Chinese media house of Xinhua a total of 780 hectares of chilli was planted in 2018. Local officials had handed out more than 16 million chilli seedlings and encouraged 5,461 impoverished families to grow more than 653 hectares of the crops.

"But due to the excessive rains and floods, large part of these crops have been damaged. Last year several chilly growers had also been hit by the COVID-19 pandemic," the exporter said.

The chunk of chilly production in China is concentrated in Guizhou, Hunan, Jiangxi Hebei, Henan, Sichuan and Shaanxi.

Besides, China, demand for Indian chillies and chilli powder has grown among other countries including several in South East Asia and the Middle East.

India's total exports of red chillies of various kinds stood at about 6,01,500 tonnes worth about Rs 8,430 crore in 2020-21.

Produce Report, a Chinese news portal for exporters, importers and retailer, pointed out that global trade in chili peppers was worth nearly $30 billion in 2017, greater than that for coffee or tea.

Chillies are required not only for daily food and diet, they also form a key ingredient for several pharmaceutical products.

Not surprising that chillies have now caught the fancy of the world.

Earlier, this week, the government's Press Information Bureau said that for the first time a 250 kg consignment of Bhoot Jolokia or "Raja Mircha", the hottest chillies in the world, from Nagaland was shipped to London. "In a major boost to exports of Geographical Indications (GI) products from the north-eastern region, a consignment of 'Raja Mircha' also referred as king chilli from Nagaland was today exported to London via Guwahati by air for the first time," the PIB said on Wednesday. It got GI certification in 2008.

The consignment was sourced from Tening, part of Peren district, Nagaland and was packed at APEDA assisted packhouse at Guwahati.

BRICS Counter Terrorism Action Plan has been finalised at the working group meet that took place last week under the chairmanship of India. The meet took place on July 28 and 29, and was chaired by Joint Secretary for Counter Terrorism, Ministry of External Affairs Mahaveer Singhvi.

The meet, which took place virtually, saw the participation of Senior counter terrorism officials from all BRICS countries.

The Counter Terrorism action plan aims to "further strengthening result-oriented cooperation between BRICS countries" in areas, such as "preventing and combating terrorism, radicalisation, financing of terrorism, misuse of the internet by terrorists, curbing travel of terrorists, border control, protection of soft targets, information sharing, capacity building, international and regional cooperation, etc," said the ministry of external affairs release.

The plan will be adopted at the BRICS National Security Advisors meeting that will take place in August. The plan implements BRICS Counter Terrorism Strategy adopted by BRICS Leaders in 2020. Later this year, India hosts the BRICS leaders' meet and so far, many events have been organised under India's leadership.

During the working group meeting while "condemning terrorism in all its forms and manifestations whenever, wherever and by whomsoever committed, the BRICS countries also exchanged views on terrorism threat assessment at national, regional and global level and resolved to further enhance counter terrorism cooperation in line with the action plan," the MEA release pointed out.

Ahead of the Counter Terrorism Working Group meet, sub workings groups met on five subjects, such as misuse of internet for terrorist purposes, de-radicalisation, countering terrorist financing, capacity building and countering foreign terrorist fighters on July 26 and 27.

BRICS is a grouping of countries namely, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. It is a major group as it has a considerable global output. On June 1, India hosted the BRICS FMs meet virtually. This is the third time, India is holding the BRICS chairmanship, after 2012 and 2016.

While there are many golf courses in Kashmir, the region has not produced elite-level players. Perhaps because there were no golf academies to train aspiring golfers - until now. The J&K administration has come forward to fill the void and a golf academy was inaugurated by the lieutenant governor of jammu& Kashmir - Manoj Sinha. Students of government schools are now encouraged to pursue the sport.

Last year, in his address to the nation on independence day, Indian prime minister Narendra Modi touched on the topic of menstruation, which is still considered a taboo subject by many. The PM spoke about various efforts made by the government to make sanitary pads accessible to all. Various individuals and organisations are also working towards spreading awareness about menstrual hygiene - one such hygiene champion is Irfana Zargar. She has made it her life's mission to distribute free sanitary kits to women who need them in Nowshera, Srinagar. WION's Johan castell travelled to the valley to meet 'The Padwoman of Kashmir.'

Notably, three generations of Col Krishnaswami’s family are in the forces and in the case of Rear Admiral Ramsagar, he had many of his kin serving in the forces prior to his own joining. As is the case in the forces, the families did not know when or whether the men went to war or where they were posted.

Col Krishnaswami recalls that he had missed the opportunity to fight in the 1962 and 1965 wars, but had accumulated enough experience over the years for the operation he conducted in 1971.

Posted in India’s north-east, he volunteered to lead his troops into the then East Pakistan and conducted an ambush. But this was no ordinary one - it involved trekking undetected for dozens of kilometres through rice fields, slush forests and river crossings in neck-deep water, all while protecting their ammo and weapons from getting soaked. Their target was an ammo-loaded vehicle exiting an ordnance factory in enemy territory.

The Colonel and his 80 men were tasked with delaying the vehicle movement, encircling and neutralising them. By laying traps to block the convoys (some of which were led by tanks), the Indian infantry men aided by artillery support killed over 117 Pakistani troops and injured many others.

Two Indian army men were killed in action, besides the two who were injured in this operation. It is significant that the Indian troops had taken the enemy by surprise, despite having infiltrated deep behind enemy lines.

When a Pakistani Army officer surrendered before Col Krishnaswami, he reportedly said that they did not have the equipment to bury their fallen troops. Krishnaswami retorted that it was not about the equipment, but about the Pakistanis’ lack of willingness to dig a burial pit.

He then ordered his men to dig the graves for Pakistani troops, as the Pakistani Major stood there in shock and awe. On seeing the graciousness and professionalism displayed by the Indian troops in digging graves for their fallen enemies, the Pakistani Major reportedly exclaimed in praise “If we had soldiers and officers like these, we would never have lost a war”.

He lauded the immense support provided by the Air Force in creating an atmosphere of air Superiority for 13 days, where India’s Air Force was used in a manner that rendered the enemy Air Force ineffectual.

The fledgling Indian Air Force flew 6,000 sorties in 13 days as part of combat and non-combat missions. All of this must be seen in the context of the 1971 scenario where there were multiple logistical, technological and hardware related challenges(that are not as prevalent in the present day scenario).

A senior pilot of the Alize Squadron, that operated from aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, Rear Admiral Ramsagar recalls how Pakistan started the war when the Vikrant was non-operational in the dry dock for service. He touched upon the Navy’s then leadership that took tough and astute decisions such as moving the Vikrant from Bombay in India’s West(within Pak's reach) to Vishakapatnam in the east(within the reach of only a single Pak submarine).

While the partially-serviced carrier had crossed over to the east coast, the Naval aviator recalled having undertaken non-catapult assisted take-offs and also making landings during such tests.

When the carrier was stationed off Vishakapatnam, a Pakistani submarine PNS Ghazi had made it into the harbour and started laying mines. However, while the submarine did so, it is said that it exploded due to a detonation of one of the mines it had laid, following which an INS Rajput also pounded it with explosives and divers recovered the Ghazi nameplate.

When the aircraft carrier was moved closer to east Pakistan, day time bombings runs were done by the carrier-based Hawk planes, whereas night missions were by the Alize aircraft.

The Navy planes carried out extensive attacks on Dhaka, Chittagong and Cox’s Bazaar during the night and day, thanks to the Indian Air Force which had quelled all resistance from the air and ground.

It was during the fourth day of the war that Rear Admiral Ramsagar flew a reconnaissance sortie into western Bangladesh and noticed large vessels that were meant to ferry Pakistani troops back.

After raining his six rockets onto the six vessels(which were too large to be significantly damaged), he flew back to the carrier and reported his sighting, following which they went on another bombing run, which led to the ships showing white flags in an act of surrender.

However, on the tenth day of the war, while flying over the western region of East Pakistan, he made a daring low-flying attack on Pakistani vessels that were being towed.

While his bombs missed the narrow vessels, only a depth charge fell on one vessel. Fearing the explosion of the charge, thousands of Pakistani troops jumped into the water fearing for their lives.

However, the Alize was hit by enemy gunboat fire at close-range of which eight rounds pierced and exited the aircraft. The hits caused a hydraulics failure, wing and engine fire onboard on his plane and some shots even missed his feet by a whisker.

With only his battery-powered communications set and a compass, he and his crew flew 90miles on a damaged aircraft to make a successful night landing on the INS Vikrant.

Instead of performing a net-landing (as advised), he performed a normal landing, in order to save his aircraft from total damage.

Summing up the gallantry displayed by the forces and the events of the war, Lt Gen Arun said that it displayed the ability to take risks, mitigate risks and nullify their effects.

He also touched upon the importance of camaraderie, honouring the fallen, while lauding the forces’ perseverance, courage and tenacity. He referred to the Indian military leaders’ foresight, planning and the ability to think through information overload and high-pressure situations and highlighted the importance of such skills among the corporate leaders and management.

Among those honoured at the event were Veer Naris(wives of fallen soldiers).

To land an aircraft onto the deck of a moving aircraft carrier is a highly acclaimed feat in military aviation, doing so while flying a damaged aircraft is almost fictional.

To land an aircraft onto the deck of a moving aircraft carrier is a highly acclaimed feat in military aviation, doing so while flying a damaged aircraft is almost fictional. Going behind enemy lines is rare, but imagine laying ambushes in enemy territory, despite being outnumbered. India’s war veterans did these and many such feats of daredevilry to liberate Bangladesh(then East Pakistan). NDA coursemates and Vir Chakra awardees Col A. Krishnaswami and Rear Admiral Ramsagar recalled their experience of being in the thick of action in the 1971 war and their acts of gallantry. They were in conversation with Lt. Gen. A.Arun, General-Officer-in-Command(GOC) Dakshin Bharat Area at a special event hosted at Madras Management Association, Chennai. The event was hosted as a part of the Swarnim Vijay Varsh celebrations. Both the officers who were commissioned into the forces in 1958 relived their life and times in the run-up to the war.
