IPL 2024: WATCH | 14 runs off two balls, Shashank & Ashutosh almost take PBKS home in tense chase

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Shreyas Iyer acknowledged a misjudgment in reading the pitch after their first loss of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. KKR were comprehensively beaten by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on April 8 at Chepauk and Iyer conceded a mistake on their side.

"I personally feel we fell short in terms of assessing the wicket," Iyer said after the loss.

KKR, however, had a decent powerplay despite losing Phil Salt on the first ball of the match. Kolkata went on to score 56 runs in the first six overs with Sunil Narine and Angkrish Raghuvanshi taking charge. CSK's Ravindra Jadeja then changed the complexion of the game with a double-wicket over, dismissing both the set batters.

"We were phenomenal in the powerplay but after that, we couldn't capitalise, we lost consecutive wickets. We weren't able to assess the conditions as quickly as possible. It completely changed after the powerplay and scoring runs off this wicket wasn't easy," Iyer said.

The KKR skipper also said that CSK knew the conditions of their home ground well and they bowled exactly according to the plan.

"Obviously, they know conditions pretty well and they bowled according to their plan. It was a bit tacky, especially even when the hard hitters came in, it wasn't easy for them to go [big] right from the first ball. It changed tremendously after the powerplay. We were trying to construct our innings, didn't go to plan. We take those learnings and move forward," Iyer noted.

Thanks to Jadeja's 3/18 in four overs, KKR could score just 137/9 in 20 overs despite having an above-par powerplay. Chasing the total, CSK were never in trouble as they reached the target in 17.4 overs with seven wickets in hand. For Chennai, skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad eventually hit form and top-scored with an unbeaten 67 off 58 balls.

This was CSK's third win overall in the ongoing season and all of them have come at home. Earlier, Ravindra Jadeja's 3/18 in four overs restricted KKR to just 137/9 in 20 overs despite having an above-par powerplay. Chasing the total, CSK were never in trouble as they reached the target in 17.4 overs with seven wickets in hand. For Chennai, skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad eventually hit form and top-scored with an unbeaten 67 off 58 balls. After the match, KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer agreed to misreading the pitch which proved to be costly in the end. "I personally feel we fell short in terms of assessing the wicket," Iyer said after the loss. The KKR skipper also said that CSK knew the conditions of their home ground well and they bowled exactly according to the plan. This was KKR's first loss of the season after winning three games on the trot.

IPL 2024: Mumbai Indians become first team to achieve THIS feat in T20s; CSK next on list

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will be looking to snap their losing streak against the mighty Kolkata Knight Riders (KRR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on April 8. CSK will have the home advantage but they'd need more than that to stop the KKR juggernaut. Knight Riders, notably, are the only unbeaten team in the tournament apart from Rajasthan Royals (RR).

Chennai, on the other hand, have lost two back-to-back games after winning their first two. They won their opening game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) by six wickets before beating Gujarat Titans (GT) by 63 runs. In the next two matches, CSK were beaten by Delhi Capitals (DC) and SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH).

KKR, however, have been on a roll with three consecutive wins. After narrowly defeating SRH in their first match of the season by four runs, they were dominant in their next two games. KKR beat RCB by seven wickets for their second win before inflicting a huge 106-run defeat on DC.

The reason for KKR's success has been their opening partnership with all-rounder Sunil Narine acing his pinch-hitter role as one of the openers. After scoring just two runs in his first match, Narine went on to score 47 off 22 and 85 off 39 in the next two games to give KKR a flyer of a start. With Andre Russell also in form lower down the order, KKR's batting order is the envy of the league.

For CSK, their newly-appointed skipper and opener Ruturaj Gaikwad's form is a cause of concern. Gaikwad has gotten the starts, albeit slow ones, but hasn't been able to stay long to make up for them. Apart from Shivam Dube, no middle-order batter has been able to leave an impact.

CSK would need to fire all cylinders if they hope to win against KKR.

Mumbai Indians (MI) registered their first win of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season after beating Delhi Capitals (DC) by 29 runs on April 7. The DC opener was looking to take the game on with 40-ball 66 before being dismissed by Bumrah.

Chasing a mammoth 235, DC were rocked early after David Warner departed in the fourth over with 22 on board. IPL 2024, highlights | MI vs DC: Pandya's MI secure first win of campaign

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batter Virat Kohli smashed record-extending eighth Indian Premier League (IPL) ton on April 6 against Rajasthan Royals. Virat is now two clear of both Chris Gayle and Jos Buttler on the list of most hundreds in the cash-rich tournament. Both Gayle and Buttler have six each with the latter scoring his latest ton in the same match as Kohli.

Kohli's hundred, however, was the joint-slowest in the IPL. It came off 67 balls, same as Manish Pandey in 2009 against Deccan Chargers while playing for RCB. Kohli and Pandey are behind only Yash Nahar for slowest hundred in all T20s for India. Nahar, playing for Maharashtra, had scored his 100 off 68 balls in 2021 against Goa in the domestic Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy (T20 tournament).

During his innings, Kohli faced 72 balls to score unbeaten 113 runs. This was the third most balls faced in an IPL innings, behind Brendon McCullum's 73-ball 158 not out in IPL's inaugural match in 2008 and Pandey's 2009 innings during which he also faced 73 balls for his 114 not out.

Overall Kohli, with nine tons, now sits third on the list of most T20 hundreds behind Pakistan's Babar Azam, who has 11 tons to his name, and Chris Gayle, who has 22 tons in the shortest format.

Kohli's innings was the highlight as RCB posted 183/3 in 20 overs against Royals. Buttler, however, roared back in form with a century which came off just 58 balls as Rajasthan chased down the target in 19.1 overs with six wickets in hand.

Apart from Buttler, Royals skipper Sanju Samson also scored 42-ball 69 as Rajasthan registered their fourth win in as many games to go on top of the points table.

RCB, on the other hand, are eight on the 10-team table with just two points after four losses and one win from five games they have played in the season so far.

IPL 2024: RCB batter Virat Kohli's record-extending ton against RR slowest in league history

Rajasthan Royals (RR) brutally trolled Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) before beating them by six wickets in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on April 6. RCB rode on Kohli's record-extending albeit joint-slowest hundred to post 183/3 in 20 overs. The score eventually proved not enough as RR chased it with ease.

After RCB's innings, RR, from their official X account, posted: "184 sounds good on a day when 200+ was possible," alongside an image of Yuzvendra Chahal who returned the figures of 2/34 in four overs.

Kohli, who scored 113 not out off 73 balls, his record-extending albeit joint-slowest century, spoke at length about his team's performance during the mid-innings break and said: " Our target initially was 190, 195, to be honest. But then assessing the pitch and how it was slowing down, we decided if one of Faf [du Plessis] or me get out, then the other had to bat till the end so that we can get that boost closer to 180-185, which we did, which I feel is a very effective total on this pitch."

Kohli's assessment, however, proved wrong as Royals chased the target with relative comfort in 19.1 overs, thanks to a 58-ball unbeaten 100 by Jos Buttler.

Royals lost Yashasvi Jaiswal early but 148-run partnership between Buttler and skipper Sanju Samson, who scored 42-ball 69, turned the game around. Royals did lose two more quick wickets after Samson's dismissal but Buttler stayed on till the end and finished off the game with a six.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) will be hosting Gujarat Titans (GT) in Indian Premier League (IPL) match 21 on April 7 in Lucknow. Both teams are at four points in the middle of the table and would be looking to claim the third spot on the points table with a win. While LSG so far have played three games and won two of them, GT are at two wins and two losses after four games.

LSG's new pace sensation Mayank Yadav is again in the spotlight after delivering two back-to-back Player of the Match performances in his first two IPL games. Yadav, who has lit up the ongoing IPL season, has six wickets in two games after taking 3/27 against Punjab Kings (PBKS) and 3/14 against RCB.

Ahead of him are Shaun Tait (157.7 kmph in IPL 2011), Lockie Ferguson (157.3 in IPL 2022) and Umrah Malik (157 kmph in IPL 2022).

For Gujarat, their batting and bowling both would again be in focus as they have once lost while chasing a 200+ total and failed to defend one as well. The defeat in their last match against Punjab Kings would still be hurting as they lost the match from winning position after two rookies helped PBKS chase 200.

Talking about Lucknow, Mayank has taken over all the spotlight which has given other players to find form. Quinton de Kock found his form with 56-ball 81 in the last game but skipper KL Rahul has largely struggled this season. Among other who now need to step up for LSG are Devdutt Padikkal, Ayush Badoni and Marcus Stoinis.

As for the match against SRH, CSK were nicely placed at 119/3 in 13.4 overs despite Dube's dismissal. In the next 6.2 overs, however, they could manage only 46 runs and posted a below par total of 165/6 in 20 overs.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad is facing a bit of heat for his captaincy decisions during the loss against SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 5 in the Indian Premier League (IPL). "On the back of what he did in the last game, I'm amazed he did not come out to bat earlier. I can't understand why he's been out there for just three balls," said former England skipper Michael Vaughan while talking to Cricbuzz.

The pacer has claimed six wickets in two matches he has played so far and has bowled north of 150 kmph most times.

Watson said that it takes time for body to get adjusted to bowling at high-speeds in Test cricket and for the time being, Mayank should be playing white-ball cricket.

"I've seen it in the past, whether it's in India or other parts of the world, when everyone gets very excited about a young speedster that comes in, the thought is always, 'oh, let's push him to play Test cricket because that's the ultimate', and it certainly is, but that does take time, said Watson.

"While his body is going to mature and get more resilient, which does take a number of years, then I think just by playing T20 and one-day cricket will gradually build up his resilience.

"So I'd love to just see him play the shorter formats while he's just getting used to his body and his body's building that strength that he does need," he added.

The score might have been a bit below par but CSK bowlers did make it hard for SRH due to a slow and gripping pitch. It was Abhishek's innings of 37 in 12 balls which eventually proved helpful as SRH chased down the target in 18.1 overs with six wickets in hand. So we wanted to take the powerplay on. We knew it will be slow but not if we take on the bowler. Because it would be difficult for the bowler as well." The batter, who has already hit the fastest fifty for his team (off 18 balls) earlier in the season, also thanked former cricketers Brian Lara and Yuvraj Singh for his development as a batter. "Big scores matter, but I went with the flow today. Hopefully I will get out last next time. It is all the hardwork i have put before this. Australia batter Steve Smith has admitted that it has been challenging for him as a Test opener so far. Smith took the role after David Warner called time in whites for Australia in January earlier this year. Smith, who has nearly 10,000 Test runs, was then promoted up the order to open the batting.

"It's been challenging so far. We've played with some tricky wickets, particularly new-ball wickets that have done quite a bit. It has been challenging. I'd love to sort of turn it around and score some runs up there, that's for sure," Smith told news agency PTI in an interaction.

The Aussie has batted in four matches as an opener and has been able to score just 191 runs in eight innings at an average of 28.50 with a highest score of 91 not out. Smith, however, said that he isn't thinking much about it.

"I'm not reading too much into it. You know, I feel like I've still been batting well," he said while acknowledging that he needs to fix a few technical things.

"A few things I'd like to fix up a little bit technically, but I've had that going throughout my whole career, and it doesn't really matter where I'm at in that respect. We'll wait and see," he added.

Smith also said that the wickets he has opened on have been a bit tricky as well with opposition batters also failing to score runs on them.

"Can't sort of underplay how difficult the wickets have been. A lot of the top orders that we've played against haven't scored a great deal of runs, and it hasn't been until the 30-40 overs-mark that we've seen the wickets get a little bit better and the lower order score some runs,” he added.

Overall, Smith has played 109 matches for Australia with 9,685 runs to his name after starting his career at number nine. He is now considered Australia's one of the best batters ever with an average of 56 in Tests alongside 32 tons and 41 fifties.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batter Glenn Maxwell has compared Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) speedster Mayank Yadav with former Australia pacer Shaun Tait. Mayank is making headlines in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season for his extreme pace and hustling the opposition batters.

The 21-year-old pace sensation already has six wickets to his name in the two matches he has played. And in the eight overs bowled so far, Mayank has given away just 41 runs. Most of Mayank's deliveries are north of 150 kmph and one such ball claimed Maxwell's wicket during LSG vs RCB on April 2.

Speaking on ESPN's Around the Wicket podcast, Maxwell heaped huge praise on Mayank and said: "He has some real extra speed that you don't really see a lot of around world cricket at the moment. "It's such a beautiful smooth action," Maxwell added. "He [Mayank] sort of glided through the crease really nicely. I think pace-wise, the only one that I can sort of really resemble it to is a little bit like Shaun Tait when he was in his heyday.

"I think when he was at the peak of his powers it was extremely hard to pick up the extra zip it feels like it has off the wicket. I think that's as close as it probably comes to it."

He also bowled the fastest delivery of the season at 156.7 kmph during the match vs RCB, improving on his record of 155.8 kmph from the previous match vs PBKS. Yadav's fastest delivery of the season is now fourth on the list of all-time fastest deliveries of the league. Ahead of him are Shaun Tait (157.7 kmph in IPL 2011), Lockie Ferguson (157.3 in IPL 2022) and Umran Malik (157 kmph in IPL 2022).

India and Mumbai Indians batter Suryakumar Yadav has been declared fit and will be joining his Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise soon. The batter has been out since injuring his ankle in T20I series against South Africa in December last year. He was initially set to be out for seven weeks but a hernia operation after ankle injury delayed his return.

The batter, however, has now been cleared to play by the National Cricket Academy (NCA). The news was also confirmed by a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) source to the news outlet Indian Express.

“He is fit now. The NCA made him play a few practice games and he looked good. He can join the Mumbai Indians team. We wanted to be sure that when Surya goes back to MI, he is 100 per cent fit and ready to play games. He wasn’t feeling 100% during his first fitness Test before the IPL, so we waited to see if there was any pain while he was batting,” said the source.

He may feature in MI's next match on April 5 against Delhi Capitals. His return might help turn around Mumbai's fortune as they have lost three games in a row. Mumbai currently sit last on the 10-team points table.

In their first match of the season, MI failed to chase a modest total of 169 against Gujarat Titans. In the next match, Sunrisers Hyderabad annihilated MI by hitting 277/5. Mumbai valiantly tried to achieve SRH's target but eventually fell short by 31 runs.

In their last match against Rajasthan Royals at Wankhede (MI's home ground), it was expected that Mumbai might win their first match of the season. Royals, however, had other plans as they restricted Mumbai to 125 in 20 overs and won the match by six wickets.

Narine scored a belligerent 85 off just 39 balls, hitting seven fours and as many sixes. Narine's opening partner Phil Salt although was dismissed early, scoring 18 off 12. KKR sent debutant Angkrish Raghuvanshi to replace Salt and the rookie blazed his way to 54 off just 27 balls. Towards the end, Rinku Singh also teed off for 26 in eight balls. Chasing the mammoth total, DC were never in the hunt after being reduced to 33/4 inside five overs. Skipper Rishabh Pant and Tristan Stubbs then added 93 runs for the fifth wicket in just 47 balls to give Delhi a glimmer of hope. After Pant (55 off 25) and Stubbs (54 off 32 balls) got out, DC were effectively done in the game. They were finally bowled out for 166 in 17.2 overs, losing the game by 106 runs. For KKR, Vaibhav Arora and Varun Chakravarthy took three wickets each while Mitchell Starc chipped in with two. Narine was aptly judged Player of the Match for his 85 and a wicket. This was KKR's third win in three matches and they now sit atop the points table. DC, on the other hand, have slipped to the ninth place in the 10-team table with one win and three losses in four games.
