At the sidelines of the World Championship of Legends (WCL), in Edgbaston, former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi slammed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for sacking Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq post the national team's 2024 T20 World Cup debacle, in West Indies and the USA. Recently, the two -- who were part of the seven-member selection committee -- were ousted from the panel, which hasn't been well received by Afridi.
In a major development, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have reportedly asked the International Cricket Council (ICC) to shift India's Champions Trophy 2025 games to Dubai or Sri Lanka as the national side will not travel to Pakistan. The mega event is scheduled to take place in Pakistan early next year. The showpiece tournament will make its return after 2017 when Sarfaraz Ahmed-led Pakistan beat India in the final to win the competition in England and Wales.

Recently, BCCI sources told Indian news agency ANI, "It is highly unlikely that the team will travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy but a final decision will be taken by the government. So, in that case, a hybrid model is being worked out. India may play their matches in UAE or Sri Lanka just like the Asia Cup. Although the ICC will also have their stand on it, as of now this is what we are thinking of. Let's see how things go in the future. As of now, it looks like it will be played in a hybrid model."

'There is lot to say': Former Pakistan pacer Wahab Riaz reacts after being sacked from PCB selection panel

Pakistan cricket’s desperation has started to catch the attention of the fans and media after they were eliminated in the group stage of the T20 World Cup in June. Now facing a routine post-World Cup review, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to sack members of the selection committee Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq, and is likely to revert back to the old selection process. The decision comes after Pakistan could not progress into the Super 8 of the T20 World Cup while questions were raised on the selection of the squad.

Wahab Riaz, Abdul Razzaq sacked

According to ESPNcricinfo, the seven-member committee which is by default headed by former chief selector Riaz was trimmed down to five. Both Riaz, the de facto head of the committee and Razzaq were sacked on Tuesday (July 9) evening. This comes as a big U-turn from the Pakistan Cricket Board that experimented with the selection committee where all the seven members had equal power and voting rights, unlike the chief selector panel.

The PCB selection committee will likely be abolished and a new chief selector could be announced in the coming days with the rest of the members still part of the new system.

The move, however, comes as a surprise for few as Riaz was considered a close aide to now PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi with the former also serving a term as Sports Minster. The decision by the PCB comes after Riaz and his selection committee faced backlash for poor selection calls.

The former Pakistan speedster was with the team during the T20 World Cup and was widely considered responsible for the team’s failure having also served as the de facto head of the selection committee.

Wahab Riaz, Abdul Razzaq sacked According to ESPNcricinfo, the seven-member committee which is by default headed by former chief selector Riaz was trimmed down to five.
Gautam Gambhir's first-ever assignment as Team India head coach will be the forthcoming India tour of Sri Lanka, starting later this month. The selection of the team will take place later this week as India will play 3 ODIs and T20Is each in the Island nation.
As per a report in India Today, Gambhir's first meeting with the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee is scheduled for later this week.
Outgoing Team India head coach Rahul Dravid won hearts by declining the INR 2.5 crore (INR 25 million) extra bonus awarded by the BCCI for Rohit Sharma & Co.'s T20 World Cup triumph, in Barbados on June 29. The former Indian captain, who has been succeeded by Gautam Gambhir as the head coach, took the decision to ensure all the members of the support staff were equally rewarded with the bonus prize money.

Notably, the BCCI had announced a whopping INR 125 crore (INR 1250 million) for Team India members, including the players and support staff, for their historic unbeaten run in the recently-held T20 WC 2024 edition, in West Indies and the USA (where they beat South Africa by 7 runs in the final). While India's main squad, of 15 players, and coach Dravid were rewarded INR 15 crore (INR 150 million) each, the latter's support staff (comprising bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, batting coach Vikram Rathour and fielding coach T Dilip) were given INR 2.5 crore (INR 25 million) each. However, Dravid has called for him to be rewarded equally with his support staff members.

A BCCI source was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times, "Rahul wanted the same bonus money (Rs 2.5 crore) as the rest of his support staff (bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, fielding coach T Dilip, and batting coach Vikram Rathore). We respect his sentiments."

It is to be noted that this isn't the first time when Dravid came up with such a heartfelt gesture. After Prithvi Shaw-led India won the 2018 U-19 World Cup, in New Zealand, the then coach Dravid was rewarded INR 50 lakh (INR 5 million) prize money, compared to INR 20 lakh (INR 2 million) for other members of his team. Back then, he asked the board to divide the money equally with his coaching staff, which was readily agreed.

Apart from the main squad, Dravid-led coaching staff, even the reserve players have been rewarded with INR 1 crore (INR 10 million) each whereas the backroom staff have been given INR 2 crore (INR 20 million) per head for India's second T20 WC win.

With the victory, India ended their 11-year-long ICC title drought and also won their second T20 WC edition (after the inaugural tournament in 2007).

We respect his sentiments." Also read: 'Only thing missing...' - Rohit Sharma's FAREWELL note for outgoing coach Rahul Dravid after T20 WC win It is to be noted that this isn't the first time when Dravid came up with such a heartfelt gesture. Meanwhile, BCCI, on Tuesday (July 9), announced Gambhir as the new senior men's team head coach. He will take over from the upcoming white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, scheduled to kick off later this month.

BCCI announces Gautam Gambhir as new India head coach

Former India women skipper Anjum Chopra thinks it's a little too early for a Women's Test Championship. It is to be noted that India Women's head coach Amol Mazumdar had said yes to the same after the recent Test victory against South Africa in a one-off Test.

India women spinner Sneh Rana, who took 10 wickets in the win against SA, had echoed the same views as coach Mazumdar.

Speaking to WION, Chopra, however, said that more countries need to play Test cricket before a championship like in men's cricket could be organised.

"It's little too early for Test Championship for women because there are not so many countries in the world which play Test match cricket. So, the first target or step towards the target of WTC (for women) will be the fact that more than 2 or 3 countries play Test cricket on a more regular basis."

"Something like two-day or three-day concept can get introduced for other teams which are not playing full fledged Test cricket. The better would be to introduce associate nations to cricket simultaneously while the full members play red ball than just playing a WTC between two or three teams," added Chopra.

The former skipper also spoke on the steps that could be taken by both BCCI and ICC to further make the game popular among the masses.

"Consistency, the more the girls play in front of the crowd, the more familiarity people will get about it. More competitive matches will assist in the growth," she said.

"If the frequency increases in women's cricket with one series leading to another that will help. Not easy to achieve but it will help the growth immensely," she further added.

'Little too early,' says former India skipper Anjum Chopra about Women's Test Championship

On Tuesday (July 9), Indian captain Rohit Sharma shared an emotional post for outgoing head coach Rahul Dravid after India's historic T20 World Cup 2024 triumph, in West Indies and the USA. After India beat South Africa by 7 runs in the final of the 20-nation mega event, in Barbados on June 29, Dravid's coaching tenure -- which commenced in late 2021 -- came to a fitting end. For someone who never won a World Cup as a player, Dravid's dream finally got fulfilled, albeit as a coach of the senior men's team. Thus, Rohit took to his official Instagram handle to write a lengthy note, thanking Dravid for his services in a heartfelt note.

'You left all of your accolades and achievements at the door and walked in as our coach'

Rohit wrote, "Dear Rahul bhai, I have been trying to find the right words to properly express my feelings on this but I'm not sure I ever will so here's my attempt."

He further opined, "Since my childhood days I have looked up to you just like billions of others but I was lucky enough to get to work with you this closely. You are an absolute stalwart of this game but you left all of your accolades and achievements at the door and walked in as our coach and came on a level where we all felt comfortable enough to say just about anything to you. That is your gift, your humility and your love for this game even after all this time. I have learnt so much from you and every memory will be cherished. My wife refers to you as my work wife and I'm lucky to get to call you that too."

'You left all of your accolades and achievements at the door and walked in as our coach' Rohit wrote, "Dear Rahul bhai, I have been trying to find the right words to properly express my feelings on this but I'm not sure I ever will so here's my attempt." He further opined, "Since my childhood days I have looked up to you just like billions of others but I was lucky enough to get to work with you this closely. My wife refers to you as my work wife and I'm lucky to get to call you that too." 'Only thing missing...' - Rohit Sharma's FAREWELL note for outgoing coach Rahul Dravid after T20 WC win

Rahul Dravid received a hero's welcome and a guard of honour from young kids at a local cricket academy in Bengaluru after India's historic T20 World Cup triumph. Under Dravid's coaching, Rohit Sharma-led India won the recently-concluded T20 WC 2024 edition, held in West Indies and the USA. It was Dravid's last assignment as India head coach, since taking over in late 2021. Following India's T20 WC run, where they were unbeaten in the 20-nation mega event, Dravid-led support staff and Rohit-led national side have been receiving roaring response from the countrymen. The clip of Dravid's recent welcome at a cricket academy went viral.

Gautam Gambhir is expected to take over as India head coach very soon. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah had revealed that India will get their new head coach from the upcoming white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, scheduled to kickoff later this month. With Gambhir reportedly even shooting his farewell video with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) camp, where he rejoined as team mentor in late 2023, the Indian cricket board is expected to announce the big decision very soon. Gambhir and WV Raman, former Indian cricketer and women's team coach, were among the only two applicants to go through the interview process, conduced by the Cricket Advisory Council (CAC). After the interview process, Gambhir was reportedly termed as the top contender. However, many are perplexed as to what is the delay in the official announcement with Gambhir looking set to take charge.

According to The Indian Express, Gambhir and BCCI are in the "final stages of salary negotiations", which is delaying the official announcement. Notably, the BCCI keeps the options open regarding the salary of the head coach of the senior men's team. Even in the advertisement inviting applicants for the top post, It was clearly mentioned that the remuneration is "negotiable and will be commensurate with experience."

Gambhir is a huge name in Indian cricket, having had a stellar international career from 2004-2016 (although he announced retirement in late 2018). While he has no coaching experience, his overall exposure at the international level and successful mentorship roles for IPL franchises, is expected to help him draw a higher salary than the previous coach, Rahul Dravid (whose yearly remuneration was around INR 12 crore -- INR 120 million).

As per reports, BCCI is also set to give Gambhir a freehand in terms of selecting his support staff. The former Indian opener, who was the team's highest run-getter in the final of the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup, is expected to take full charge from the Sri Lanka tour, with focus on next year's Champions Trophy and the ongoing WTC cycle.

Why is BCCI delaying Gautam Gambhir's appointment as India head coach? Full details out

Gautam Gambhir is rumoured to take over as the Indian senior men's team coach from their upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, later this month. Ever since his name started doing the rounds for the top post, he has emerged as a strong contender to take over from Rahul Dravid (who signed off with India's T20 World Cup win in West Indies and USA on June 29). Reportedly, Gambhir recently shot a farewell video with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) camp, in Kolkata, to sign off as their mentor with talks intensifying for him to succeed Dravid.

As per a report, Gambhir arrived in Kolkata to shoot a farewell video and sign off as their mentor after only rejoining his former franchise, where he won two titles as IPL captain, in late 2023. Under Gambhir's mentorship, Shreyas Iyer-led Kolkata won their third IPL title and first since 2014 (during his captaincy days). It is to be noted that Gambhir also served as Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) mentor from 2022-23, leading them to the playoffs in both editions. While he has no coaching experience, his exposure at the international level is expected to do wonders for Team India. He was a big-match player for India during his playing days and, hence, is expected to groom the younger lot and manage the transition with ease.

Thus, Gambhir is now ready to say goodbye to KKR after a one-year stint as a team mentor. An official told Times Now, "It was a low-key affair, but Gambhir wanted to bid goodbye to his fans with a message and that is why they shot a video at the Eden."

England pacer James Anderson is all set to play his farewell Test against West Indies at Lord's from Wednesday (Jul 10). Speaking at a press conference ahead of his last Test, Anderson said that he 'didn't have choice' but to move on.

Anderson was told by the England management ahead of the upcoming season that they were planning to move on. As a result, the pacer is all set to play his final and 188th Test in a couple days time.

"It's difficult to say. I've not really got a choice," Anderson told reporters on Monday (Jul 8) when asked if he's quitting a bit sooner. The question was in response to Anderson's 7/35 for Lancashire in English county earlier this month.

"It was important for me that I try and put in some good performances to finish with. I loved being out on the field with Lancashire last week. I've always loved playing for Lancashire. I've not played a huge amount for them over the last 20 years because of England duties. But every time I've had a chance to go back to play for them, I've tried to give it my all and that's exactly what I did last week. Unfortunately, I couldn't get the win because of the north-west weather," he added.

His after retirement plans have already been confirmed by England Cricket chief Rob Key. The veteran will be joining the national team as a mentor.

Anderson made his debut against Zimbabwe in May 2003 and has played 187 Tests - the second most after Sachin Tendulkar's 200 and the most for England. He has 700 Test wickets to his name - the third most overall behind Australia spinner Shane Warne (708) and Sri Lanka spinner Muttiah Muralidaran (800).

Among pacers, Anderson's 700 wickets are the most. He's also second on the list of bowlers with most Test wickets at home with 434 scalps to his name and behind only Muralidaran (493).
Pakistan's newly-appointed Test coach Jason Gillespie sent a strong message to the Shan Masood-led group, emphasising on the importance of fitness. Gillespie, whose first assignment as the Test coach is Pakistan's upcoming two-match home series versus Bangladesh, stated that there would be no compromise on fitness of players and they need to value what they bring to the side. Gillespie landed in Pakistan and addressed a press conference ahead of the two-Test series versus the Bangla Tigers, which kicks off on August 21 in Rawalpindi.

Gillespie, the former Australia pacer, urged the Pakistani players to level up in terms of fitness and called it a key factor in modern-day cricket. In addition, he stated that he wants the team to play positive cricket, but not resort to England's 'bazball' approach.

"National teams are not where you still question a player's value. "My mantra is that we should only have fit, robust and strong players in the Test side because in modern-day cricket of any format, fitness is a must," he opined.
