Current owners CVC Capital Partners are likely to sell the Ahmedabad-based franchise with the two Indian conglomerates likely to bid having already invested in several sports teams including Pro Kabaddi League (PKL).

India beat South Africa by 7 runs in the 2024 T20 World Cup final, at the Kensington Oval, Barbados, on June 29 to end their 11-year-long ICC title drought and also claim their second T20 WC title. Rohit Sharma-led India opted to bat versus Aiden Markram & Co. but were reeling at 34-3 before Player-of-the-Match Virat Kohli (76) and Axar Patel (47) stitched a valuable 74-run fourth-wicket stand to take India out of troubled waters. The Men in Blue posted 176-7, with Shivam Dube also contributing with a fine 16-ball 27.

In reply, SA were restricted for 169/8, despite needing 30 off 30 balls at one stage, courtesy of Hardik Pandya's 3 for 19 and two-fers each from Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh. Recently, spin-bowling all-rounder Axar Patel recalled his crucial partnership with Kohli and how the latter helped him gain confidence.

Axar was promoted at No. 5, to maintain a left-right batting combination, when Suryakumar Yadav was out for cheap, leaving Kohli stranded at one end. Speaking to Cricbuzz, the 30-year-old recalled, "Rohit bhai was standing beside me when Rishabh Pant got out. He told me 'Axar pads pehen le (Axar, pad up)'. After that (Yuzvendra) Chahal came running to tell me that Rahul (Dravid) Bhai wants me to pad up. When I was padding up I did not know what to do. We were two wickets down and I had still not analysed the pitch. Next I saw Suryakumar (Yadav) also got out. Things happened so suddenly that I did not have time to think. When I was going down the staircase, Hardik told me in Gujarati not to take any stress. 'Just watch the ball and hit the ball,' he said and it stuck with me."

On Thursday evening (July 18), BCCI announced India squad for the upcoming white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, starting July 27. Even Virat Kohli returned for the ODI leg whereas Shubman Gill was announced the new vice-captain for both squads.
Former Indian spinner Amit Mishra made heads turn with his comments on Virat Kohli in a recent interaction. During a chat show on YouTube, the ex-leg spinner stated Kohli isn't the same person and has changed a lot since gaining fame and power whereas Rohit Sharma remains unchanged. His remark on Kohli went viral but now former Indian opener Robin Uthappa has hailed Kohli's evolution from a brash young Delhi boy to an evolved human being.

Speaking on cricket.com/tv, Uthappa said, "I have actually seen Virat kind of evolve from a brash young Delhi boy to an evolved human being. You know the evolution has been quite tremendous, to be honest. Today he's practically reaping what he had sown 15 years ago."

'Seen him evolve from brash young Delhi boy to...': Former India batter on Virat Kohli after Mishra's take

India is expected to get a new T20I captain on Thursday (July 18) after BCCI selection committee's meeting for the upcoming Sri Lanka tour, starting on July 27. With Rohit Sharma retiring from the format after India's 2024 T20 World Cup win, last month, a new T20I captain is set to be named not only for the SL tour but until 2026 T20 WC, at home. Murmurs are that there is a split decision among the board officials, new head coach Gautam Gambhir and the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee with regard to the new captain. While Hardik Pandya has served as the vice-captain and even led India on many occasions in Rohit's absence, it is reported that Gambhir and Agarkar are in favour of Suryakumar Yadav.

Gambhir, who was appointed as India's head coach early this month, was part of an informal call with BCCI officials and the selection committee on Tuesday evening (July 16) regarding India's roadmap ahead. It is learnt that it was during the call Gambhir and Agarkar were in favour of Surya becoming the next T20I captain over Hardik. It is understood that Gambhir didn't directly put forward Surya's name but stated that he would prefer working with a captain whose workload management isn't a concern. Notably, Hardik has had several fitness concerns in the recent past, thereby shifting things in Surya's favour (who is India's third-highest run-getter in T20Is).

“Although Gambhir did not directly pitch for Surya in the call, he made it amply clear that he would want to work with a captain whose workload does not become a stumbling block. Agarkar was clear with his views,” a BCCI official told Hindustan Times.

However, the selection committee is tilted towards Hardik due to him being the World Cup-winning vice-captain. In addition, the all-rounder made 144 runs and picked up 11 wickets in India's victorious campaign, after injury woes and a poor run in IPL 2024 (where he led Mumbai Indians). It is believed that Gambhir and Agarkar have already updated Hardik about the latest developments.

The announcement is expected to happen later in the day after the meeting between BCCI officials, selectors and head coach (which was put off by a day).

India will travel to Sri Lanka for three ODIs and T20Is each. While Rohit is expected to be available for the ODI leg, KL Rahul may lead in case the former misses out. Meanwhile, Surya is likely to take charge of the T20I team, on a permanent basis till 2026.

Also read: Gambhir, Agarkar inform Hardik about last-minute captaincy change as Surya to be India's T20I captain: Report “Although Gambhir did not directly pitch for Surya in the call, he made it amply clear that he would want to work with a captain whose workload does not become a stumbling block.

‘Gambhir didn’t pitch Suryakumar's name but said he won't work with…': BCCI official on India's T20I captaincy

England captain Ben Stokes has backed Chris Woakes to help fill the void by James Anderson in the bowling line-up. Ahead of the second and penultimate Test versus West Indies, which gets underway on Thursday (July 18) in Trent Bridge, Nottingham, Stokes believes Woakes is the right man to take charge of the pace attack following Anderson's retirement. The wily pacer called it quits after the first Test, of the three-match series, at Lord's with as many as 704 wickets (most by a pacer, third-most overall).

Prior to the second Test, Stokes said on Wednesday (July 17), "I see it (James Anderson's retirement) as an opportunity for someone like Chris Woakes to take up the leadership role in the bowling unit. Woaksy is a very experienced bowler, a very experienced player. We have been so used to Jimmy and Broady doing that. But we don't have them now. I see that as an opportunity for Woaksy. (Woakes has been) A phenomenal performer, especially in England and great for him now to lead the attack."

Woakes, a veteran of 49 Tests, has 150 wickets in the format but is known for his ability to shine in home conditions with his discipline and movement with the red cherry. As a result, the fast-bowling all-rounder has 114 wickets at an average of 22.04 with 5 five-wicket hauls and a ten-fer in English conditions.

For Anderson, he has retired but continues to be part of the team, as part of the support staff to mentor the pacers. Stokes pointed out the positive impact of Anderson's presence, especially in providing valuable insights and guidance to the bowlers.

In this regard, the Test captain highlighted, "The last few days have been really good. You can see that the lads are really desperate to pick his brains. Obviously before that it was a bit different. Jimmy has always been preparing for his games, so it's about letting him do his stuff and pick his brains as much as you can, that felt appropriate. But now obviously he's just standing there and you can see lads drawn towards him wanting to pick his brains about what he thinks, how he holds certain deliveries.

Stokes added, "I think it has been a very, very smooth transition. But there is no doubt that there have been emotions with Jimmy. But with him still being around the team, I think he still knows that he has so much more to offer to the game with the ball. Couldn't think of a better bloke to be able to pass on the knowledge of fast bowling to the guys we have with us at the moment."

Gambhir, Agarkar inform Hardik about last-minute captaincy change as Surya to be India's T20I captain: Report

New Zealand players are likely to miss the start of the Indian Premier League (2025) season after the home calendar for the 2024-25 season was announced on Wednesday (July 17). Players like Devon Convey, Tom Latham and others could now miss the services at the start of the IPL 2025 which could affect their value in the upcoming mega-auctions. Pakistan will tour New Zealand in March and April after the ICC Champions Trophy concludes, meaning there won’t be too much space for the players between the tournaments.

What is the scenario?

After the Champions Trophy concludes in the second week of March (dates yet to be finalised), Pakistan will make the long journey to New Zealand to play three ODIs and five T20Is. The tour will officially begin on March 16 with the first T20I in Christchurch. The five-match T20I series will then conclude on March 26 with the ODI series next. The 50-over format will then start on March 29 and conclude on April 5 with the third and final ODI.

While the IPL 2025 schedule is not yet finalised, it is expected that the mega-rich league will kick off in the last week of March and conclude in the final week of May to accommodate rest for players before they play in the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final in London.

The WTC final will play a pivotal role in IPL fixture scheduling as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) remains in favour of no compromise with the mega-rich league. Assuming the WTC final takes place in June first week, the IPL 2025 will likely start in March, meaning New Zealand players will miss out on the start.

New Zealand players to miss out on big sum?

With New Zealand players likely to miss a couple of the initial weeks of the IPL, franchises will give a second thought on getting the players during the auctions. This year the mega auctions will once again take place with franchises hesitant to splash cash on players who are not available for the entire season.
The International Cricket Council (ICC), the apex body of cricket is set to review the cost spiral during the recently concluded T20 World Cup in the United States and the West Indies. A meeting of ICC directors is set to take place in Colombo over the weekend as they review the situation that led to the injection of an extra $20 million during the T20 World Cup's US leg. Cricket West Indies (CWI) will also be the center of attraction for the poor management during the T20 World Cup while conversation over Champions Trophy 2025 should also spark debate in the meeting.

ICC to review T20 World Cup costs

The board of directors of the ICC is set to review the costs which increased significantly during the last phase of the T20 World Cup. According to a report by Espncricinfo, an initial budget in the range of US $40-50 million was allotted for the USA leg of the tournament. The report adds that one of the directors said that the initial estimate, of $15 million was meant for operational expenses and roughly $30 million for the construction of the temporary stadium outside New York City.

However, on the eve of the World Cup, T20 World Cup USA Inc, the US-based entity created by the ICC's commercial arm IBC (ICC Business Corporation) to run the US leg, sent in a request for an additional $20 million.

The situation did not go well with several directors who were furious about the last-minute request made by IBC. According to one official who was involved in the organising and running of the tournament, said that though the $20 million T20 World Cup USA Inc sought was not an additional budget, to support cash flow: "T20 Inc had to pay people and needed a cash injection as a loan."

What else is on the agenda?

While the cost review remains one of the talking points during the T20 World Cup, the major attraction will be ICC’s stance on the Champions Trophy 2025 which is to be held in Pakistan during February next year. According to media reports, India will not travel to Pakistan which has once again led the talks of a hybrid model for the Champions Trophy 2025. While nothing is official yet, the ICC is expected to have a long discussion on the issue before the schedule of the tournament is announced.

Amit Mishra, who has been part of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) since the franchise's admission in 2022, feels the Sanjiv Goenka-owned side will look for a 'better captain' than KL Rahul for IPL 2025. Since they came into the picture, LSG have been captained by Rahul. Under Rahul, the team reached the playoffs in IPL 2022 and IPL 2023 before ending seventh in IPL 2024. During this year's edition, Lucknow were on course to reach the playoffs, however, fell flat in their last few games by big margins. After their defeat to eventual runners-up SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH), in Hyderabad, LSG owner Goenka was seen having a heated discussion with Rahul. The video went viral in no time and many feel Rahul won't be part of Lucknow from the next season. Mishra, in a recent interaction, played down the Goenka-Rahul episode but feels LSG will opt for a 'better captain, who understands the pulse of T20s.

'A person with right mentality for T20s should be captain. Someone who plays for the team should be captain'

Mishra said during his interaction with Subhankar Mishra on his YouTube show, "It does not matter if he is in the Indian team or not. But a person who has the right mentality for T20s should be the captain. Someone who plays for the team should be the captain. I am sure LSG will look for a better captain."

Mishra also reflected on Goenka's chat with Rahul post-LSG's ten-wicket loss to SRH in match 57 in Hyderabad. The former Indian spinner said, "Goenka was disappointed. We lost two back-to-back matches very badly. Against KKR, we lost by some 90-100 runs and against SRH, the match was finished within 10 overs. It felt like we were bowling them during a net practice session. If I am so angry about it, will someone who has actually put money into the team not feel angry?"

Amit Mishra, who has been part of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) since the franchise's admission in 2022, feels the Sanjiv Goenka-owned side will look for a 'better captain' than KL Rahul for IPL 2025.

Someone who plays for the team should be captain' Mishra said during his interaction with Subhankar Mishra on his YouTube show, "It does not matter if he is in the Indian team or not.
