So, Google won't have to split its Chrome browser into a separate entity, at least for now. That is a blow for those who were hoping that the US Department of Justice (DOJ) would cleave off Google’s search empire by forcing a sell-off of its flagship browser. The DOJ rejected the spinoff idea despite a federal judge confirming Google’s illegal monopoly in online search. Once again, Google has escaped with its core power structures intact. The reason may lie in its lesser-known Chromium project. Here is what you should know.
Why didn’t the DOJ agree to split off Chrome from Google?
The reason appears to be how complex, messy, and potentially disruptive it would be for users if Chrome—the browser used by two-thirds of global internet users—were to be divested from Google. The DOJ ruling issued on Tuesday (Sep 2) is less about protecting users and more about institutional caution in the face of unprecedented corporate power. Also read: Perplexity AI makes bold $34.5 billion offer to acquire Google Chrome amid antitrust scrutiny
Chrome is the hidden engine of Google’s monopoly
While Chrome does not directly generate massive revenue, it funnels hundreds of billions of dollars into Google’s ecosystem by ensuring users stay locked into its services—especially Search. In the third quarter of 2024 alone, Google earned $49.4 billion through search advertising.Chrome is not just another browser; it is the gateway to Google’s ad empire—the cash cow.
How big is the Chrome browser?
Chrome currently commands a dominant 66 per cent share of the global browser market. In the United States alone, it handles over 51 per cent of browser traffic. The only real competition—browsers like Safari, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge—are far behind. In fact, many of these "competitors" benefit from their ties to Google. Apple reportedly receives around $20 billion annually from Google to keep Google Search as the default on Safari. Mozilla, which develops Firefox browser, earns approximately $500 million per year from a similar search deal—making it financially dependent on Google.Chrome is also deeply integrated into Google's larger ecosystem: Gmail, Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Calendar, and others. For most users, using Chrome is not an informed choice: It is simply the default. Then there’s Chromium. You may not have heard of it—but you should. To use an analogy: imagine Exxon no longer sells petrol but still owns the pipeline infrastructure used by all other oil companies. That is what Chromium is in the browser ecosystem.Though Chromium is technically open-source, Google funds and controls its development. Other browsers can build their features and interfaces on top of it, but ultimately, Google determines the roadmap and architecture. Competitors like Edge or Opera are merely passengers on Google’s technological ship.Rivals like Firefox and Safari, which use their own rendering engines (Gecko and WebKit, respectively), often face compatibility issues. Many websites today are optimised specifically for Chromium, leading to slower performance or broken features on non-Chromium browsers. And Google pays to keep it that way. Chrome is tightly integrated into Google’s infrastructure—for example, through Sync, Safe Browsing, and automated updates. A new owner might struggle to ensure a seamless user experience. In addition, the DOJ’s antitrust lawsuit specifically targeted Google’s control over “search distribution,” not browser ownership. As a result, Mehta concluded that a forced sale of Chrome would go beyond the scope of the case.Instead of breaking up the company, the court’s remedies involve banning exclusive default agreements (like Google’s deals with Apple), requiring Google to share its search data with rival companies, and allowing the market to “self-correct” over time.
But we’ve been here before: How the US failed to rein in Microsoft
In the early 2000s, the DOJ took Microsoft to court for bundling its then-dominant browser, Internet Explorer, with its Windows operating system. After years of litigation, the final ruling resulted in minor behavioural remedies. Microsoft’s market dominance continued for nearly a decade. It wasn’t until Google Chrome entered the market that Internet Explorer’s hold was broken. Microsoft eventually shut it down and launched Edge, which, ironically, is now based on Chromium.Taking on Google is even more difficult. It doesn't just control a browser. It owns the browser (Chrome), the engine (Chromium), the search engine (Google Search), the ad platform (AdSense), the cloud (Google Cloud), and the emerging AI infrastructure (Gemini)—all under one corporate roof. Also read: Is Google Chrome really the 'most vulnerable' browser?
Google gets a rap on the wrist—but is it too little, too late?
The DOJ’s decision to block exclusive deals and mandate data-sharing may slow Google down, but it does not dismantle the structural monopoly. Chrome continues to funnel users into Google Search. Chromium ensures that all other browsers either comply or face a technical disadvantage. And Google earns ad revenue from nearly every search, regardless of the browser used.
It’s nearly impossible to regulate open-source infrastructure—and that’s how Google wins
Open-source code is used by both commercial and non-profit ventures. Legally regulating it—especially something as complex as Chromium—is a minefield. That makes it nearly impossible for regulators to directly curb Google’s influence through this route. As of now, Google walks away practically untouched. Its ad pipeline remains intact. Its browser remains unbroken. Its “competitors” remain tethered to its ecosystem.Chrome is not just a browser. It’s a gateway. A control mechanism. A way to shape how billions of people access and experience the internet.Allowing Chrome to remain under Google’s wing and leaving Chromium untouched may be a de facto endorsement of the modern monopoly. Perhaps the real issue is that regulators—trained for 20th-century industrial monopolies—are ill-equipped to handle digital platforms built on open-source, distributed, and technically complex foundations.Google isn’t an oil baron or a railroad tycoon. It’s something new. And until regulators develop the tools to address this new kind of monopoly, Google will continue to dominate—unshaken and unchallenged.

The US Justice Department’s refusal to split the Chrome browser may look like a compromise, but Google’s grip on the web remains ironclad. Its open-source browser architecture, under the project known as Chromium, is the reason it got away. Here’s what you should know.

In 2024, another judge found that Google was monopolizing online search through exclusive distribution agreements and was earning billions of dollars through them annually. Google Vice President of Regulatory Affairs Lee-Anne Mulholland said that the court's verdict recognized that the industry has changed with the advent of AI. He said that consumers are free to choose the services they want. The court has imposed requirements that Google will have to share search data and limit its distribution of services. Sharing Google's concerns over the ruling, Mulholland said they will affect user privacy. The Justice Department called the remedies “significant.” "We will continue to review the opinion to consider the Department’s options and next steps regarding seeking additional relief," Assistant Attorney General Abigail Slater said in a release. The US government had asked Google to divest from its browser, Chrome, arguing that the browser was a crucial gateway to internet activity and facilitates a third of all Google web searches. The judge, however, found that divesting from Chrome would be messy and risky. The US authorities raised concerns that Google had entered into agreements with smartphone manufacturers, including Apple and Samsung, to make Chrome their default search engine. The judge said that a ban on these deals was off the table because such a prohibition could have a profound effect on other businesses. "Google will not be barred from making payments or offering other consideration to distribution partners for preloading or placement of Google Search, Chrome, or its GenAI products," the judge wrote. After the judgment, Alphabet Inc.'s share price grew 7.5 per cent. The order said that Google will have to make available search index data to "qualified competitors". It will also have to share user interaction information, which can be employed by rivals to improve their services. This ruling could potentially help AI companies as they could bolster their development of chatbots using the data Google is required to share. Deepak Mathivanan, an analyst for Cantor Fitzgerald, told Reuters that Google may be impacted by the data-sharing order after a while. "It will take a longer period of time for consumers to also embrace these new experiences," he said.

New Delhi: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday said that Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations between India and the European Union are in an advanced stage, as the two sides are making significant progress. Speaking to the reporters in the national capital, Goyal said, “We have reached a very advanced stage in our FTA with the European Union. Mining is a complex process. When a transaction is made between two wallets, the addresses and amounts are entered in a blockchain, and the block is assigned a hexadecimal cryptographic number, also known as a hash. Mining is the process of securing that cryptographic number by solving complex numerical problems. The hash or the cryptographic number is a sixteen-digit number, for example, 7f83b1657ff1fc53b92dc18148a1d65dfc2d4b1fa3d677284addd200126d9069. The puzzle involves finding a number or nonce (a number only used once) that, when combined with the block data, produces a hash below the aforementioned number. This process requires massive computational power. The winner receives a block reward (newly minted Bitcoin+transaction fees). For these purposes, special machines called AISCs are used. They are thousands of times faster than an ordinary computer, which requires massive energy. In countries like Iran, Ethiopia ($1,990), Sudan ($3,970), Cuba ($3,970), and Libya ($5,290), the energy costs are comparatively cheaper due to subsidised electricity and an underdeveloped energy market. In Iran, the cost of electricity is 0.004 USD/kWh compared to 17.47 cents/kWh in the USA, which is almost 44 times higher. The first world countries like Europe, the USA and Australia are not profitable. For example, Italy is the most expensive at $306,550 per coin; similarly, Austria ($277,000), the Bahamas ($280,000), and Switzerland ($236,000) also fall into the unprofitable zone. In the United States also the average cost for mining one BTC is roughly $102,260. This cost is calculated based on the average household electricity price multiplied by the amount of energy consumed. So, for miners, it is usual to flock to a low-cost electricity zone. This also shows the vulnerability of Bitcoin as it can be a major financial tool, Europe specifically is out of the competition due to their inability to subsidise electricity and keep charging in a range which is way costlier than developing countries.

Iran is among the cheapest places to mine a Bitcoin, costing around $1,320 to mine one Bitcoin; on the other hand, in the United States, mining one Bitcoin costs $102,260. But it's far from the most costly place, which is Italy at $306,000.

Amid market uncertainty, gold is considered a reliable investment instrument. This is because the prices of gold don't fluctuate so much that they can risk people's investments. The growth of gold is slow but sustained. It is also becoming popular because of the advent of digital gold, which doesn't limit people's capacity to buy the precious metal due to the size of the investment. However, many things should be kept in mind before buying gold, as people tend to make many mistakes while investing.
Here are some of the most common mistakes gold buyers make.

Options for buying digital gold
Many people think that buying physical gold is the only way they can invest in the precious metal. However, apart from bars and gold coins, gold ETFs (Exchange-Traded Funds), gold mining stocks, and sovereign gold bonds are other instruments of investment in gold as well. Physical gold needs storage, whereas ETFs and bonds don't. However, the latter involves management fees.
Purity, certification ignorance
While buying physical gold, many people are ignorant about the purity of the metal. It comes in 24 karat, 22 karat, and 18 karat purities, depending on the mixing of other metals. 24 karat gold is the purest. Also, one must buy hallmarked gold, which guarantees its purity. If you don't keep these things in mind, you may incur losses. Also, you must have proper storage facilities for physical gold. The safety vault will cost you a rental fee.
Bad market research, buying overpriced gold
Before buying gold for investment purposes, one must understand that prices are dependent on global economic trends. People should research before buying gold. One must strive to buy gold during the dips in prices instead of when the prices are high. Some sellers charge high premiums over the actual gold price. Also, for investment purposes, one must not buy jewelry, as it carries making charges, which make the investment costly.
Diversifying investments
Gold is a good investment option. However, one must not put all eggs in one basket. Investors shouldn't buy gold from all their money. Other investment options might give better returns. Hence, it is important to explore other financial instruments as well, like mutual funds. One must have a balanced portfolio, including stocks, real estate, and other assets.
Ignoring Taxes and Hidden Costs
In many countries, gold entails capital gains tax. They also have tax implications. So before buying gold, one must understand all these taxes.

President Donald Trump has claimed that US trade with India is "almost nil", painting a bleak picture of the trade deficit with India as evidence of an unfair imbalance. However, as repeatedly shown by data from official US sources, this claim is misleading and ignores the broader reality of America’s trade gaps with other countries. The US runs significant trade deficits with many nations, and India ranks only around tenth on that list—nowhere near the top five.
What exactly did Trump say about India trade?
In a Truth Social post on Monday (Sep 1), Trump claimed: “Our Trade Deficit with India is massive, and yet India does practically NOTHING for us. Our trade relationship is almost NIL — they sell to us, we get nothing. America is being ripped off. We will bring jobs and manufacturing back home where it belongs!”This is nothing new: India-bashing over trade has been a Trump passtime for months now. Yet, it is time to call out the half-truths.
The US trade reality: A whopping trillion-dollar deficit
According to 2024 data, the US recorded a record 1.2 trillion dollar goods trade deficit. This staggering figure reflects the country’s deep reliance on foreign supply chains—especially in electronics, automobiles, pharmaceuticals, and energy. But India is not one of the main contributors to this imbalance.
China leads the pack, with many 'friendly' countries also contributing to the US trade deficit
In 2024, the US trade deficit with China was 295 billion dollars, significantly down from its peak of 418 billion dollars in 2018. Despite geopolitical rivalries, the US imported nearly 500 billion dollars worth of goods from China in 2024, primarily electronics, furniture, and industrial equipment. In fact, nearly 70 per cent of all smartphones and laptops sold in the US were manufactured in China.Mexico, America’s largest overall trade partner, came second, with a 172 billion dollar deficit. US imports from Mexico reached 470 billion dollars, including cars, trucks, computers, appliances, food, and beer. Most of this trade flows duty-free under the USMCA agreement.https://www.wionews.com/videos/trump-team-highlights-indias-high-tariffs-8916254/embed
Who are the top 10 countries contributing to the US trade deficit?
The top countries include both allies and competitors. Vietnam ranks third (124 billion dollar deficit), followed by Ireland (87 billion dollars) and Germany (85 billion dollars). Further down the list are Taiwan (74 billion), Japan (69 billion), South Korea (66 billion), and Canada (63 billion). Also read: North and South Korea would have had nuclear war in 2016, but didn't because...
India ranks 10th in trade deficit with the US
In 2024, the US trade deficit with India stood at 46 billion dollars. The US exported 41.8 billion dollars to India while importing 87.4 billion dollars. While Trump has criticised this imbalance, both countries had previously agreed to increase bilateral trade to 500 billion dollars by 2030.Notably, US–India trade in services was approximately 83.4 billion dollars in 2024, helping to offset the goods deficit. Additionally, defence trade between the two nations has grown significantly—from virtually nil in 2000 to nearly 22 billion dollars in 2024.Also read: Internet refuses to believe 'Trump is dead' trend was fake, floats 'body-double' theory citing ear mark, hand bruise
The US runs trade deficits with over 100 countries—so why target India?
Official data shows the US had goods trade deficits with more than 100 countries in 2024. The combined deficit with just five Asian countries—China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam (excluding India)—surpassed 620 billion dollars. Clearly, India is far from being a leading contributor to the US trade deficit. Also read: Did The Simpsons predict US president's death in 2025? Trump has claimed that the US-India trade is “almost nil” and highlighted the trade gap with the South Asian nation. But much of US official data shows India ranks 10th in US trade deficits, far behind China and ‘friendly’ Asian trade partners. Overall. The US runs a $1.2 trillion deficit

We will bring jobs and manufacturing back home where it belongs!” This is nothing new: India-bashing over trade has been a Trump passtime for months now. Yet, it is time to call out the half-truths. The US trade reality: A whopping trillion-dollar deficit According to 2024 data, the US recorded a record 1.2 trillion dollar goods trade deficit. This staggering figure reflects the country’s deep reliance on foreign supply chains—especially in electronics, automobiles, pharmaceuticals, and energy. But India is not one of the main contributors to this imbalance. China leads the pack, with many 'friendly' countries also contributing to the US trade deficit In 2024, the US trade deficit with China was 295 billion dollars, significantly down from its peak of 418 billion dollars in 2018. Despite geopolitical rivalries, the US imported nearly 500 billion dollars worth of goods from China in 2024, primarily electronics, furniture, and industrial equipment. In fact, nearly 70 per cent of all smartphones and laptops sold in the US were manufactured in China. Mexico, America’s largest overall trade partner, came second, with a 172 billion dollar deficit. US imports from Mexico reached 470 billion dollars, including cars, trucks, computers, appliances, food, and beer. Most of this trade flows duty-free under the USMCA agreement. https://www.wionews.com/videos/trump-team-highlights-indias-high-tariffs-8916254/embed Who are the top 10 countries contributing to the US trade deficit? The top countries include both allies and competitors. Vietnam ranks third (124 billion dollar deficit), followed by Ireland (87 billion dollars) and Germany (85 billion dollars). Further down the list are Taiwan (74 billion), Japan (69 billion), South Korea (66 billion), and Canada (63 billion). India ranks 10th in trade deficit with the US In 2024, the US trade deficit with India stood at 46 billion dollars. The US exported 41.8 billion dollars to India while importing 87.4 billion dollars. While Trump has criticised this imbalance, both countries had previously agreed to increase bilateral trade to 500 billion dollars by 2030. Notably, US–India trade in services was approximately 83.4 billion dollars in 2024, helping to offset the goods deficit. Additionally, defence trade between the two nations has grown significantly—from virtually nil in 2000 to nearly 22 billion dollars in 2024. Amid India-United States tensions, the Donald Trump administration has unveiled plans to implement a new $250 (INR 22,003) so-called "visa integrity fee" on travellers from the country. This new fee has been announced under Trump's continued immigration crackdown and will go into effect on October 1st. This fee adds an additional hurdle for travellers from not only India but also other non-visa waiver nations like Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, and China. Here's all you need to know.
US Visa gets more expensive thanks to Trump's Big Beautiful Bill
With this new fee, the total cost of a US visa has gone up to $442 (around 38,902 INR). According to the US Travel Association, this is one of the highest visitor fees in the world. The visa fee is part of Trump's Big Beautiful Bill Act. Tourists from India and other nations would be expected to pay this one-off fee when their visas are issued.According to a Daily Mail report, the new visa fee is expected to hit Central and South American countries the hardest. This year, these nations have been a rare bright spot for America, with the number of travellers from Mexico rising by nearly 14 per cent (till May) according to National Travel and Tourism Office data. Meanwhile, arrivals from Argentina rose by 20 per cent and for Brazil, while smaller, a significant 4.6 per cent year-to-date increase was recorded. India, as per a new analysis, has emerged as war-torn Ukraine's largest supplier of diesel in July 2025, accounting for 15.5 per cent of total imports. Data from NaftoRynok, a Kyiv-based oil market analytics firm, shows Indian shipments averaged 2,700 tonnes a day or 15.5 per cent of Kyiv's monthly imports — one of New Delhi's highest monthly export volumes this year. This means that in July 2025, India supplied 83,000 tonnes of diesel to Ukraine. This marks a sharp rise from July 2024, when India's share was barely 1.9 per cent. The current levels are comparable only to April 2025, when India supplied 15.9 per cent of Ukraine’s diesel imports.
Irony amid US-India tensions
The surge comes at a politically sensitive time. Recently, Washington slapped 50 per cent tariffs on Indian goods, citing New Delhi's continued purchases of discounted Russian crude. The US claims that this purchase is "funding" Russia's war on Ukraine. Yet in a twist of irony, the same Indian refineries processing Russian oil are now providing Ukraine with much-needed fuel to sustain its war economy. Also read | ‘Hell for children’: Putin grooming 7-year-old kids into killing Ukrainian children, dragging them into Russia's drone war, reveals report
How the fuel gets there
According to NaftoRynok, the Indian-origin diesel reaches Ukraine through several channels. India becomes Ukraine's biggest diesel supplier, as Trump wages tariff war on New Delhi over Russian oil

The US mainstream media, most of which Donald Trump calls ‘fake news’, as well as several policy-watching think tanks, have criticised the American president's move to punish India with 50 per cent tariffs over the purchase of Russian oil. Only Trump-aligned media appear to be accepting it as a wise decision. Here is a breakdown:
Criticism of Trump tariffs against India from media, thinktanks and experts
The Wall Street Journal editorial board, often supportive of free-market conservatism, has taken a critical stance, with commentators arguing that the tariffs are disproportionate and unnecessarily antagonistic towards a key democratic ally. They noted that while India-Russia ties could be a problem for the US, Trump’s approach would do more harm than good. The Journal questioned why a nation seen as being close to the US, particularly given the bonhomie between Trump and Indian PM Narendra Modi, is now facing such punitive treatment. Also read: Amid Trump tariff pressure, India looks to diversify textile exports to 40 nations Analysts at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace described the move as ‘dismantling decades of bipartisan progress’ in strengthening US-India relations.
