Not a great start to the week for music fans in London as the city’s biggest screening party for the Eurovision Song Contest finals has been cancelled, venue partner Rio Cinema and organiser Eurovision Party London announced with a heavy heart.

The organisers confirmed that the cancellation was because of Israel’s participation amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war that has left Gaza facing a humanitarian crisis with the loss of lives and infrastructure. In a statement on X, Rio Cinema said, “Following discussion with the organizers of Eurovision Party London, we have collectively decided not to screen the Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest this year while Israel remains in the competition.”

“The Eurovision Party London has been a beloved partner of The Rio Cinema for many years, and we will continue to work with them in the future. We firmly believe that the Eurovision Song Contest has the power to bring people together across the world, and when its core values of inclusivity, equality and universality are upheld, it can be a genuine force for good. With its own slogan in mind, we hope that we can all be United By Music again soon. We will continue to organize fundraising events for the charities we support, including Doctors Without Borders and Medical Aid for Palestine,” the statement further added.

Eurovision finale screening party cancelled as London takes stand against Israel’s participation

After a well-deserved kickstart at various film festivals of the world including the Cannes Film Festival 2022, the Hindi language drama film Alpha Beta Gamma released in theatres in India on March 8. The film explores the dynamics between former lovers who are forced to live together under dire circumstances. The setting is that of the first phase of the COVID-19 lockdown when no one in the world knew how serious the virus outbreak was and what it meant.

Alpha Beta Gamma director Shankar Srikumar spoke to WION about making a slice-of-life film that tells an extraordinary story of three ordinary people. Starring Reena Aggarwal, Nishan Naniah and Amit Kumar Vasisht in leading roles, Alpha Beta Gamma tries to make sense of a story that risks being called boring.

Here are the edited excerpts from our chat:

WION: Alpha Beta Gamma comes across as a simple story. As a filmmaker, is it more difficult to tell basic stories because they can often be labelled as boring and run-of-the-mill?

Answer: It probably is. With such a theme, the writer and director's challenge is to depict even the most commonplace situations in a new way. But fortunately, human relationships are complex, and no two people or relationships are exactly alike. Just as every human being is unique, so is every relationship. So, when it is a love triangle, the storyteller has a lot of scope to play with the possibilities, about how a person will react in a particular situation. There is never a moment when things are just black or white when it comes to interpersonal relationships, especially ones where a lot of emotions are involved.

Alpha Beta Gamma: Plot and its Characters

WION: How do your characters in the film navigate this difficult journey? How do the actors juggle these emotions and translate them on screen?

Answer: How the characters of Alpha Beta Gamma navigate this complex journey of love and life, is what the story, the movie is about. How each character has their goal, their strengths and weaknesses, how they use those, how they get into difficult situations, and how they emerge from those situations as winners or losers. And is there really a winner? That is what the movie is about. As for the three main leads, Reena Amit and Nishan, they're just great actors. They've lived the roles, I'd say.

WION: What’s something you love about your film?

A. What I love most about my film is that I think I have been able to maintain a light touch – you know, not overdoing anything. I mean, this is how people are. They are not sad all the time, or happy always, they fight and makeup and they fight again. And when something gets shattered they pick up the pieces and everybody moves on. My characters do, at least. I think audiences will be able to relate to that, that you have to make a choice and life goes on. So, shed a few tears, sing a song, dance a little jig, and go on living.

Trailer | March 8, 2024 | Chotee Film Productions | Knownsense Entertainment" width="1280">

WION: The name, Alpha Beta Gamma, what does it mean in the context of your film?

Answer: Oh well, that's the advantage of having studied science – that you are able to link biology and chemistry of life to physics. As the trailer reveals, the three principal characters are like these particles, an Alpha, a Beta, and a Gamma particle and the situation they are in, is the nuclear reactor. So naturally, there is going to be a reaction or an explosion. Life's like that too, isn't it?

Aplha Beta Gamma at Cannes, Berlinale

WION: Alpha Beta Gamma has had quite a run at film festivals, from Cannes, Berlinale to IFFI to name a few. What was that experience like?

Answer: Frankly, when we made Alpha Beta Gamma, none of us expected such a journey. All that we wanted was to make this film somehow and put it out there, maybe on OTT since the pandemic was raging at that time. So it was really difficult to have too many goals at that time. And that is why we put everything we had into it – our talents, skills, money, everything we had. So when IFFI happened, then Berlin and Cannes, we were in seventh heaven.

WION: Your film’s theatrical release coincided with International Women’s Day. Was that date purposely chosen?

Answer: My idea as a writer-director was not to send out any message to anyone. Any creator for that matter, be it a writer, painter, singer, or director, I suppose all they want is to have people experience their creation and react. But then if you look at the film, it really is about a woman and the choice that she has to make. My character Mitali, her world is a microcosm, where she is caught between two men who are vying for her affection and she has to make a choice.

Produced under the banner of Chotee Film Productions' & ‘Knownsense Entertainment, Alpha Beta Gamma is presented by 70mm Talkies, Samant Chauhan and Agastya Jain. Mona Shankar, Menka Sharma, Jithin Raj and Thomas Punnoose have produced the film.

Alpha Beta Gamma director on experimenting with what he calls 'relationship story of year'

Emraan Hashmi starrer Showtime is currently streaming on Disney+ Hotstar. A fresh series on the inner workings of the Hindi film industry, a commentary on the nepotism-laced showbiz world which has a long way to go in giving its due to talented artists, Showtime brings to light the behind-the-scenes of the entertainment world.

With Showtime having made a buzz with its first drop (first four episodes) and the next part due for the later part of the year, we got talking to Bollywood lyricist Ginny Diwan who has worked on music for Showtime.

Here are the excerpts of our chat:

WION: Showtime has been received very well by the audiences. Apart from the storyline, it’s music is being appreciated too. Were there any challenges while creating songs for Showtime?

Answer: I like to think of the process of writing as a journey of exploration, and not as a challenge. With each film or web series, I delve into a different world, with different characters and their respective journeys. Showtime, a project by Dharmatic set in the rich and enticing world of the entertainment industry, offered me a rich tapestry for lyrical exploration.

The show explores the complexities of conflicting ambitions, the nuances of nepotism, and the struggles of underdogs. Honestly, what more can a lyricist, a poet wish for than to be asked to explore the emotions of complex characters in depth and then set these words to wonderful melodies created by composer Anand Bhaskar? It was like being given a blank canvas and a fascinating world to draw inspiration from.

Exploring the diverse shades it offered, from a dark hue like Haara” to the playful palette of “Bombae” – gave me a sense of fulfilment. The most challenging song of all was “Mahroo.” It is a song that had to transition from the yesteryears to today in the same sequence and Anand and I believe we managed to bring it to life well.

WION: What was your brief for Showtime?

Answer: Showtime is a multi-starrer fictional show by Dharmatic Entertainment, set in the fascinating world behind-the-scenes of the entertainment industry. When Mihir Desai briefed me on Showtime, I was completely in, even before he officially asked me. As a writer, the world excited me as it offered complex situations and emotions to explore. The album has seven songs across eras, genres, and moods, from romantic songs like “Mahroo” to darker and mood-based songs like “Bikhre” and “Haara,” to retro vibe and rap songs.

What made this project special was that it was a team effort where I had the chance to work with incredibly talented people, both experienced and new to the industry such as Anand (who composed music for 5 songs), Karan Jhaveri (who composed “Dil ye Churaya” & “Armaanian Rhapsody”) and Pratika Prabhune (who wrote the rap portion of “Bombae”) and all my lovely singers.

WION: You’ve previously worked on songs for films like Baaghi, OMG2, Jugg Jugg Jiyo, Mirzapur, and many others – which was the most challenging of all?

Answer: All these films and shows were equally exciting in their own ways. I found Mirzapur to be the most challenging because it was my first official OTT album. When briefed on the series back in 2017, I had no idea it would become so popular with people binge-watching it in one go. Composer Anand Bhaskar and I took on the project because we found the subject matter to be off-beat and thrilling. It was challenging because to make some of the songs more relevant to the setting of the story (in Uttar Pradesh and on the outskirts of Bihar), I had to delve into the Bhojpuri language, which I wasn't very familiar with. This added excitement to the process for me.

WION: Has the landscape of lyricists in Indian cinema changed in terms of fame, recognition, and salaries? Do lyricists have the negotiating power?

Answer: It is certainly in the process of some transformation, but it hasn't fully shifted yet. OTT platforms have also been a significant boon for every artist as they provide additional opportunities for expression and offer more bandwidth to involve talented individuals who may have struggled to break into the mainstream film industry otherwise, across departments, be it actors, composers, technicians and us lyricists. I too am grateful for the opportunities I have received from this platform.

On credits & compensation, I believe there is room for improvement. We still often have to ask for our credits and fair compensation on certain projects, which should be normalised. However, it is improving, especially with organizations like IPRS (Indian Performing Right Society) working relentlessly and extensively, to ensure that lyricists receive their due recognition, fame, and remuneration. And while there have been producers who recognise what we bring to the table and give us our due without asking to fight for it, I do wish this breed grows.

WION: Which is your best work according to you?

Answer: As they often say, the best is yet to come. But on a serious note, I believe that in any creative process, conscious creation only amounts to about 10-20%. The rest is intuitive, flowing through you. Therefore, I am truly grateful to the Almighty for giving me the sensibility and empathy to write songs such as those for Masoom, “Varoon” (from Mirzapur), “Tum Jo Gaye” (from Jugg Jugg Jiyo), and “Raatrani” (from Modern Love Mumbai).

WION: Lastly, how do you feel about the rampant use of Artificial Intelligence in creative fields? Do you think AI can replace artists?

Answer: I don’t perceive AI as a threat to my profession. In my view, for any creative endeavour, experience, empathy, and expression are essential ingredients. Remove one, and the equation falls apart. While AI can enhance expressions, your unique experience and empathy cannot be replicated. They are intrinsic to you and must be integrated into any AI tool for desired results. Therefore, I see AI as a tool worth adopting rather than something to feel intimidated by.

Here are the excerpts of our chat: WION: Showtime has been received very well by the audiences. The album itself was an interesting mix of different genres, ranging from an Awadhi-style love song ‘Varoon” to a Bhojpuri “Munna Rap” and a Punjabi wedding song “Saure Chali Ve.” Even when the story called for a dance song, rather than a typical 'item number,' I wrote “Tittar Bittar.” As a female writer on board, I made sure to empower the female character being portrayed, rather than objectifying her.
Meghan Markle is back on Instagram. The Duchess of Sussex announced a new venture as she returned to the photo-sharing platform with a surprise new project called American Riviera Orchard. The Instagram page for what appears to be a lifestyle brand carried a bio that reads: "By Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex. Established 2024."

The first post on the page is that of Meghan Markle, who is seen picking flowers and cooking in a kitchen set to the song “I Wish You Love” by singer Nancy Wilson.

What is American Riviera Orchard?

From what we understand, American Riviera Orchard seems to be a nod to Santa Barbara, the California town where Meghan and her husband Prince Harry reside with their two kids, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. Most locals call Santa Barbara the “American Riviera”. This, is “because of its temperate climate and lush landscapes”. Locals also highly publicise its world-class wine culture.

Meghan Markle’s new venture comes with a logo that includes the name Montecito, the name of the neighbourhood where they reside.

Once approved, American Riviera Orchard will sell tableware, drinkware including decanters, kitchen linens and edible treats such as jellies, jams, marmalade and spreads. The trademark application is also seeking approval for cookbooks.

It’s not easy entertaining the little ones. They can easily get bored or lose interest in whatever they are doing and move on to something else. When Nick Jr. show Masha and The Bear debuted in India with its live theatrical adaptation in December 2023, it became a rage for kids and parents alike.

Now in its last leg of the all-India tour for this season, we got in touch with Vishaal Asrani, director of the show who spoke about writing-directing such live theatrical shows that help transport children to a world of magic, entertain them and educate them through the ride.

Here are the excerpts from our chat:

WION: Writing for kids needs a special skill – you have to break it down and make it really simple while also staying true to entertainment. What did you have in mind while directing Masha and The Bear?

Vishaal: Kids are the toughest audience to please. If you can’t keep them glued to the action for even a few moments, you’ve lost their interest. I have directed a number of stage adaptations of internationally acclaimed movies such as, DreamWorks’ Madagascar, Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, The Little Mermaid, Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs to name a few. So, while directing Masha, I had to make sure it was correctly paced. I wanted the show to be high on energy and yet simple enough for the little ones to understand.

Each scene has dance, music, costume changes, visual effects and of course magic on stage.

WION: It’s a widely watched TV show by kids worldwide, were there any challenges in adapting it for Indian audiences?

Vishaal: While adapting anything for the stage, when it is already so popular on TV, one has to maintain the characteristics of the characters that made them such a phenomenon in the first place. I wanted the actors on stage to be as close in look, movement and voice to the originals in the show. It was challenging to make actors move around in 8 foot high costumes and be in charge of gimmicks and special effects too.

Other than that, there wasn’t much of a challenge adapting it for the “Indian audience” per se, as now the audiences are the same worldwide.

WION: What do you love the most about the response to the show by kids?

Vishaal: The squeals of joy when they see their favourite characters appear on stage. The show is highly interactive and is full of audience participation. The cutest is seeing the parents dance and sing along with the kids too, mimicking the choreography that we have set on stage. It’s like watching the adults in the audience go back to their childhood days.

WION: Who is your favourite among the characters?

Vishaal: It’s like asking a parent to choose a favourite among their children! I have no favourite, but I do have favourite traits of each character I love. The loyalty of Masha to her friends, the fatherly protective nature of the Bear, the cuteness of Panda, the wild side of Rosie the Piggy, the strong bonds of friendship that Snowy and Masha share, the craziness of Professor Nonbelievious and so much more. I think what’s most important is that the all characters have something nice about them and teach children many important life lessons, such as the significance of friends, loyalty, acceptance, diversity and respect for all living beings.

WION: When is the next set of performances and where?

Vishaal: The next set of performances are in Mumbai on March 16 and 17 at Balgandharva Rang Mandir auditorium in Bandra, Mumbai. We have 3 shows each day. 11:30 am| 2:30 pm| and 6:00 pm.

WION: Would you like to take it outside of India?

Vishaal: Sure! It’s a world class show and we would love to take it all over the globe if it can be worked out. I’m sure audiences world over will love it.

Now in its last leg of the all-India tour for this season, we got in touch with Vishaal Asrani, director of the show who spoke about writing-directing such live theatrical shows that help transport children to a world of magic, entertain them and educate them through the ride. Here are the excerpts from our chat: WION: Writing for kids needs a special skill – you have to break it down and make it really simple while also staying true to entertainment. It’s a world class show and we would love to take it all over the globe if it can be worked out. I’m sure audiences world over will love it.
