After effects of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic are immense as some of those who were infected suffer from long Covid, which is a phenomenon of Covid-related ailments remaining in patients long after they recover.

As per the World Health Organization (WHO), long Covid is a complex medical condition that can be hard to diagnose as it has a range of more than 200 symptoms.

When long Covid is concerned, people have reported neurological symptoms, including difficulty thinking or concentrating. Headaches, sleep problems, dizziness, pins-and-needles feeling, loss of smell or taste and depression, etc some of the other reported symptoms.

Some of the symptoms can resemble other illnesses such as exhaustion, cognitive impairment, pain, fever and heart palpitations, etc.

A report by Reuters mentioned the case of Scott Taylor, who never got to move on from COVID-19. Taylor caught the disease in spring 2020.

As per the agency report, the 56-year-old still had not recovered about 18 months later when he killed himself at his home near Dallas, having lost his health, memory and money.

While telling the plight of millions of sufferers of long Covid, Taylor wrote in a final text to a friend, "No one cares. No one wants to take the time to listen."

"I can hardly do laundry without complete exhaustion, pain, fatigue, pain all up and down my spine. World spinning dizzily, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea. It seems I say stuff and have no idea of what I'm saying," Taylor added.

The case highlights the fact that suffering can drag a person to a place where he/she might even think about ending his/her life. Although, there is no authoritative data on the frequency of suicides among sufferers.

But several scientists from organisations including the US National Institutes of Health and Britain's data-collection agency are beginning to study a potential link between long Covid and suicides.

The experts are following evidence of increased cases of depression and suicidal thoughts among people with long Covid.

Leo Sher, a psychiatrist at Mount Sinai Health System in New York who studies mood disorders and suicidal behaviour, said, "I'm sure long COVID is associated with suicidal thoughts, with suicide attempts, with suicide plans and the risk of suicide death. We just don't have epidemiological data."

As per the Reuters report, Sher said pain disorders were a very strong predictor of suicide and inflammation in the brain also. Studies done so far, attempted to link such issues with long Covid. Sher said, "We should take this seriously."

An analysis for Reuters conducted by Seattle-based health data firm Truveta showed that patients with long Covid were nearly twice as likely to receive a first-time antidepressant prescription within 90 days of their initial Covid diagnosis compared with people diagnosed with Covid alone.

Apple launches iPhone 14: How good are the new iPhones? Are they worth the money?

More than five years after leaving office, former United States president Barack Obama and his wife, former first lady Michelle Obama, returned to the White House on Wednesday (September 7) for the unveiling of their official portraits.

The event was hosted by fellow Democrat and the current President Joe Biden, who served as the vice president throughout Obama's two terms.

Obamas themselves unveiled the paintings which will get hung beside those of generations of previous first couples in the White House.

When they pulled the plain blue cloths that were covering the artworks, people present in the East Room cheered for the former president and former first lady.

Barack Obama's painting is made by artist Robert McCurdy, who put the grey-suited ex-president at the centre of his canvas, in a photorealistic portrait with a white background.

Brooklyn artist Sharon Sprung created Michelle's painting. The former first lady is pictured in a blue dress in the White House's Red Room.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday (September 7) reported "good news" from the front near Kharkiv in the east, saying some settlements had been recaptured. Both sides have reported heavy fighting in the region.

During the evening video address, Zelensky thanked Ukrainian artillery troops for "successful strikes" against the Russian forces in the south of Ukraine.

Zelensky said, "This week we have good news from Kharkiv region" and "now is not the right time to name those settlements, where the Ukrainian flag has returned".

According to the mayor of the city, Russian forces carried out two missile strikes in Kharkiv overnight. Ihor Terekhov posted on Telegram, saying that rockets hit the neighbourhoods of Saltovskoye and Kholodnogorsk at around midnight local time.

As per the US-based think tank, The Institute for the Study of War, Ukraine has retaken 400 sq km of territory in the east of the Kharkiv region.

After doing the latest assessment of the ground situation, the group said that, on September 7, the Ukrainian forces "likely used tactical surprise to advance at least 20km into Russian-held territory".

The group also states that Ukraine was "likely exploiting Russian force reallocation" to the south to "conduct an opportunistic yet highly effective counteroffensive" to the northwest of the city of Izyum.

The report further added that Russia had been forced to shift its focus on its forces in the south because of Ukraine's ongoing operations in the Kherson region.

Of late, Ukraine has been waging a counter-offensive in the south of the country since last week, where it also claimed to recapture several villages.

Kharkiv region has been partly occupied by Russian troops since the start of the invasion launched on February 24.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a combative speech on Wednesday (September 7) to an economic forum that Russia would not lose what he calls its "special military operation" in Ukraine.

Putin said all Russia's actions were designed to strengthen the country's sovereignty and were aimed at "helping people" living in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine.

Putin said, "We have not lost anything and will not lose anything. In terms of what we have gained, I can say that the main gain has been the strengthening of our sovereignty."

Putin conceded, however, that Moscow's decision to send troops into Ukraine had created a "certain polarisation, both in the world and within the country."
