Hurricane Ian makes landfall in South Carolina after pummeling Florida

Military officers on Friday said they had dismissed the leader of Burkina Faso's junta, in the country's second coup this year.

They declared the removal of Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, who himself came to power in a coup in January, in a statement read out on national television.

The rebelling military also announced the closure of borders from midnight, as well as the suspension of the constitution and the dissolution of the government.

They proclaimed Captain Ibrahim Traore as the country's new strongman.

Around 15 soldiers in fatigues appeared on the Radio-Television broadcaster shortly before 8:00 pm local time.

"We have decided to take our responsibilities, driven by a single ideal -- the restoration of security and integrity of our territory," they said.

A curfew from 9:00 pm to 5:00 am was also announced.

The United States said it was “deeply concerned” by events in Ouagadougou and was encouraging US citizens to limit movements.

“We call for a return to calm and restraint by all actors,” a US state department spokesperson said.

Earlier on Friday, the government said an "internal crisis" within the army. There were troop deployments in key areas of the capital, and negotiations had been underway after shots rang out before dawn.

Gunfire was heard around the presidential palace and headquarters of the military junta, witnesses told AFP.

The transitional government, set up by Damiba and his team, had said there had been an "internal crisis in the army", after AFP journalists saw troops block several main roads in Ouagadougou.

Emergency crews strove on Thursday to reach stranded Florida residents as Hurricane Ian trained its sights on the Carolinas after cutting a coast-to-coast path of destruction across Florida, leaving behind deadly floodwaters, downed power lines and widespread damage.

Ian, one of the strongest storms ever to hit the U.S. mainland, flooded Gulf Coast communities and knocked out power to millions before plowing across the peninsula to the Atlantic Ocean, where it regained strength ahead of another anticipated landfall in South Carolina on Friday.

President Joe Biden, speaking at Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) headquarters in Washington, said Ian could prove to be the deadliest in state history.

"The numbers are still unclear, but we're hearing early reports of what may be substantial loss of life," Biden said.

In hard-hit Charlotte County, a spokesperson for the sheriff's department confirmed multiple deaths but did not have a firm figure. Authorities in Sarasota County were investigating two possible storm-related deaths, a sheriff's spokesperson said.

A 72-year-old man in Deltona in central Florida died after he went outside during the storm to drain his pool, authorities said.

More than 2.6 million homes and businesses in Florida remained without power. Governor Ron DeSantis said that Lee and Charlotte counties, home to more than 900,000 people, were "basically off the grid."

Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina were bracing for impact as Ian - which weakened to a tropical storm during its trek across Florida - returned to hurricane strength by 5 p.m. ET (2100 GMT) after moving into the Atlantic Ocean, with maximum sustained wind speeds of 75 miles per hour (120 kph), the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

The storm was expected to make landfall again around 2 p.m. ET (1800 GMT) on Friday just north of Charleston. A hurricane warning was in effect for approximately 230 miles (370 km) of coastline from the South Carolina-Georgia border north to Cape Fear, North Carolina.

In South Carolina, Mercedes Benz, Boeing Co, and the seaports that support manufacturers will suspend operations on Friday.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has released detailed views of the DART impact after James Webb and Hubble telescopes on Thursday revealed their first images of a spacecraft being smashed into an asteroid.

NASA recently celebrated the success of an experiment, which was the world's first-ever in-space test for planetary defence. NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) impact aimed to deflect an asteroid that poses no threat to Earth. The process further modified the object's orbit.

The space rock Dimorphos helped people on Earth to build the ability to defend themselves against a potential future life-threatening asteroid.

Alan Fitzsimmons, who is an astronomer at Queen's University Belfast, said that the initial images showed matter spraying out over thousands of kilometres, and the James Webb and Hubble images "zoom in much closer".

Fitzsimmons is involved in observations with the ATLAS project. He said, "It really is quite spectacular." Notably, the observations from the space telescopes will help reveal how much matter sprayed from the asteroid, as well as the nature of its surface.

These observations are also the first time when Webb and Hubble simultaneously observed the same celestial target.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said, "Webb and Hubble show what we have always known to be true at NASA: We learn more when we work together."

Nelson said, "All of humanity eagerly awaits the discoveries to come from Webb, Hubble, and our ground-based telescopes – about the DART mission and beyond."

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has released detailed views of the DART impact after James Webb and Hubble telescopes on Thursday revealed their first images of a spacecraft being smashed into an asteroid.

ALSO READ | 'Fire in their eyes': Three Russian cosmonauts return from International Space Station Alan Fitzsimmons, who is an astronomer at Queen's University Belfast, said that the initial images showed matter spraying out over thousands of kilometres, and the James Webb and Hubble images "zoom in much closer". ALSO READ | 'Significant milestone': Hole in the ozone layer will close in the next 50 years NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said, "Webb and Hubble show what we have always known to be true at NASA: We learn more when we work together." Nelson said, "All of humanity eagerly awaits the discoveries to come from Webb, Hubble, and our ground-based telescopes – about the DART mission and beyond."
