KL Rahul (57) and Rohit Sharma (43) put on a 96-run opening stand to set the foundation for India at the Barsapara cricket stadium here.

Suryakumar Yadav (61) then took centre stage as he smashed five boundaries and as many sixes en route to his 102-run stand off just 40 balls with Virat Kohli (49 not out).

Dinesh Karthik then made some lusty blows in his seven-ball 17 not out.

Keshav Maharaj (2/23) was the most successful bowler for South Africa but it turned out to be a disastrous day for the rest of his bowling colleagues.

India beat South Africa by 16 runs in 2nd T20I, take unassailable 2-0 lead

Arsenal ensured they will end the weekend on top of the Premier League with a 3-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby on Saturday but Liverpool's problems continued as they drew 3-3 at home to Brighton & Hove Albion.

Graham Potter marked his first Premier League game in charge of Chelsea with a 2-1 victory at Crystal Palace thanks to a late winner by Conor Gallagher.

Newcastle United thumped 10-man Fulham 4-1 at Craven Cottage to snap a run of draws while Everton enjoyed their first away win of the season with a 2-1 victory at Southampton.

Gianluca Scamacca scored his first Premier League goal to help West Ham United on their way to a 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers to move them out of the bottom three and leave Wolves in it.

Bournemouth drew 0-0 at home to Brentford.

Arsenal's seventh win in eight matches this season left them on 21 points, four ahead of champions Manchester City who host Manchester United on Sunday.

It was a well-deserved triumph for Mikel Arteta's side although they were helped by Tottenham self-destructing after the break when full back Emerson Royal was red-carded.

Thomas Partey's superb curled effort gave Arsenal an early lead but Harry Kane's penalty levelled it up before the break.

Kane became the first player to score 100 away goals in the Premier League and now has a record 44 goals in London derbies, one ahead of Arsenal great Thierry Henry.

Those feats will mean little to Kane though as his side's unbeaten start to the season came to a disappointing end.

Shortly after halftime, Gabriel Jesus scored from close range after a howler by Tottenham keeper Hugo Lloris and Tottenham's Royal was then sent off for a daft foul on Gabriel Martinelli who was deep inside his own half.

"The red card killed the game," Tottenham manager Antonio Conte said. "Not because we had 10 men, but because the team we had was really offensive and in that four or five minutes it took to make the substitutions the team was really offensive, it was difficult to defend and we conceded the (third) goal."

Granit Xhaka sealed the points for Arsenal.

Liverpool dropped more points as Brighton made light of the departure of Potter to mark the start of the Roberto de Zerbi reign with a point from a thriller.

Leandro Trossard scored a hat-trick for Brighton, the first two to put his side 2-0 ahead inside 20 minutes and then late on to salvage a point after a powerful Liverpool fightback.

Roberto Firmino's brace levelled it up for the hosts and when Adam Webster turned into his own goal it seemed Liverpool would take the points, only for Trossard to strike again.

Brighton remained in fourth spot with 14 points while Liverpool are ninth on 10.

Potter's Chelsea were heading for a draw at Selhurst Park after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's first goal for the club cancelled out Odsonne Edouard's early opener for Palace.

Gallagher, who spent last season on loan at Palace, curled in a superb winner in the 90th minute, his first Chelsea goal.

Draw specialists Newcastle made the most of an early red card for Fulham's Nathaniel Chalobah to claim their second win of the season after five stalemates in their last six games.

Chalobah was sent off in the eighth minute for a dangerous challenge on Sean Longstaff that was originally deemed a yellow card but upgraded after a VAR review.

Fit-again Callum Wilson bundled Newcastle ahead three minutes later and Miguel Almiron made it 2-0 in the 33rd minute with a sumptuous left-foot volley.

Sean Longstaff made it 3-0 before Almiron slotted home his second goal from Joe Willock's precise pass.

Bobby De Cordova Reid scored a late consolation for Fulham.

Conor Coady and Dwight McNeil scored in quick succession in the second half as Everton came from behind to win at Southampton who had taken the lead through Joe Aribo.

United States President Joe Biden said on Saturday (October 1) that seven Americans who were "wrongfully held" in Venezuela had been freed. Five of the seven were Citgo oil company workers who were jailed in 2017 while visiting the South American nation on business. Separate arrests were made for the other two.

After Biden's announcement, Caracas also informed the release of two Venezuelans imprisoned in the US. A government statement said that Venezuela "announces the release of two Venezuelans unjustly imprisoned in the United States." The statement added that US citizens had been freed for "humanitarian reasons".

The officials said that the swap also included US Marine veteran Matthew Heath and Osman Khan. The officials also revealed that they were being exchanged for two of Maduro's wife's nephews, who had been jailed on drug charges.

President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday (October 1) promised that his Ukrainian military will retake more areas from Russian forces in the country's eastern Donbas region.

In his evening address, Zelensky said: "Throughout this week, more Ukrainian flags have been raised in the Donbas. There will be even more in a week."

Zelensky's remarks came after Kyiv declared that its troops had started advancing into the vital eastern town of Lyman and the defence ministry tweeted a video of soldiers there hoisting the yellow and blue flag of Ukraine. He also added that although the Ukrainian flag was flying in the city, "fighting is still going on there".

President Volodymyr Zelensky promises to retake more of eastern Ukraine

he US suicide rate rose in 2021, particularly among young men, according to official data out Friday -- an increase that ends a two-year-decline.

The number of suicides rose from around 46,000 in 2020 to 47,650 in 2021, according to preliminary figures released by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The age-adjusted suicide rate per 100,000 people grew from 13.5 in 2020 to 14 last year. The most significant increase was seen among young boys and men between the ages of 15 and 24, where the rate rose eight percent.

In 2000, after a decade of decline, the United States recorded a recent low of 10 deaths by suicide per 100,000 people.

"One of the things that may have contributed to the decrease in the 1990s was the advent of medications that help reduce risk for suicide," Jill Harkavy-Friedman of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, told AFP.

The rate then started growing -- potentially because of new warning labels attached to antidepressants, according to Harkavy-Friedman -- until by 2018 it was 35 percent over 2000 levels.

Then, it fell five percent from 2018 until 2020.

According to Harkavy-Friedman, the recent fluctuations are difficult to interpret.

"We don't really know yet what the full implications of this kind of rise are," she said, adding it was necessary to look at patterns over the long term.

The role of the Covid-19 pandemic, in particular, is complex.

According to the AFSP, research has shown that "people tend to come together during traumatic events initially and this can serve as a protective factor against suicide, though this societal cohesion may not persist as time passes."

Data from 2021 shows that the suicide rate for men is four times higher than for women, which is in line with past trends.

Among the reasons put forward include the idea that men are more likely to use lethal means, and have more difficulty in seeking mental help.

This preliminary data does not yet provide a breakdown by ethnicity or income of the deceased.

According to the CDC, suicides are the second leading cause of death among those aged 10-34.

Recently, the United States introduced a simpler three-digit helpline (988) for people in distress, replacing the previous 10-digit number.

"We're very happy about 988, which is the new mental health crisis line, and the accompanying crisis services that goes with it, because this is going to bring options to people who feel so desperate and in such pain," said Harkavy-Friedman.

Who is Baquer Namazi? The American held in Iran allowed to leave

Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins's party was headed for victory in Latvia's general election on Saturday, according to an exit poll which also showed major setbacks for parties representing the Baltic state's large Russian-speaking minority.

The poll put Karins's New Unity in first place with 22.5 percent and said Harmony, a social-democratic party that has won the vote in recent years, could fail to make the threshold for entering parliament.

Latvians voted in the shadow of neighbouring Russia's invasion of Ukraine, with many concerned about Russian aggression and expansionism.

National security and support for Ukraine were key issues for many voters, as well as the need for stability in this country of 1.8 million people on the eastern edge of the European Union and NATO.

"The election results look rather promising for my own party but it's a little early to say," Karins told reporters after polls closed.

Regarding Russian threats, Karins said: "Neither I nor my government nor my country reacts on fear.

"We will continue to invest in our own defence as a NATO member state," he added.

Karins said he expected the consultations on forming a new government to begin on Monday.

Political expert Marcis Krastins said Karins was "most likely" to win, depending on how many smaller parties supporting him get past the five percent threshold for entering parliament.

"Russians invading Ukraine helps Karins to secure voters in Latvia because in such times people tend to rally around the flag," Krastins said.

The exit poll showed the United List, which includes the Greens and regional parties, coming in second place with 11.5 percent followed by the Green Farmers Union with 10.9 percent and National Alliance with 8.4 percent.

According to the exit poll, only one party representing the Russian-speaking minority, called Stability!, would scrape past the threshold to enter parliament with 5.4 percent.

The minority makes up around 30 percent of the population.

Solidarity with Ukraine

One voter said he made his decision based on the conflict raging nearby.

"I am 83 years old, I lived through Soviet and German military occupations... I am today making my choice depending on which party supports Ukraine the most against the Russian invasion," Verners Karkliņs told AFP.

"People are seeing that we are already in a storm, but it will only get stronger, and it's making people think more about their future and their country's future," President Egils Levits told journalists after voting.

Ahead of the vote, Levits had warned people against backing politicians in the Russian-speaking community who "hesitated to clearly state who is the aggressor and who is the victim at the outset of the Russian invasion".

Referring to the energy crisis and economic difficulties, he had also cautioned against populists saying he was "highly sceptical of political parties and figures promising to get us out of this mess quickly and easily.

"I do not trust those who offer simple, and most often useless, solutions to extraordinarily complex problems," he said.

Dominated over the centuries by Teutonic knights, Swedes, Poles, then Russians, Latvia gained independence in 1918 before finding itself under Soviet occupation in 1944-1990.

Identity challenged?

Along with inhabitants of nearby Poland and their Baltic neighbours Lithuania and Estonia, many Latvians feel their country is vulnerable even though it is in the EU and NATO.

The outgoing government has shown strong support for Ukraine, hiked defence spending and worked towards greater energy security.

The Harmony party condemned Russia's invasion but has been less vocal about accusations that Russian forces are carrying out human rights atrocities.

Some Russian speakers in Latvia said that Latvian attitudes towards them have deteriorated since the war started and feel their linguistic and cultural identity is being challenged.

"In Latvia, Russian-speakers are in a way collateral victims of the war," said Miroslavs Mitrofanovs, co-chairman of the Latvian Russian Union party, which scored only 3.2 percent in the exit poll.

India: At least 26 killed as tractor-trolley carrying devotees falls into pond in Kanpur

More than a dozen senior Indonesian government and military officials were targeted last year with spy software designed by an Israeli surveillance firm, according to nine people with knowledge of the matter.

Six of the individuals told Reuters they have targeted themselves.

The targets included Chief Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto, senior military personnel, two regional diplomats, and advisers in Indonesia's defence and foreign affairs ministries, according to the people.

Six of the Indonesian officials and advisers targeted told Reuters they received an email message from Apple Inc in November 2021 telling them that Apple believed officials were being "targeted by state-sponsored attackers."

Apple has not disclosed the identities or number of users targeted. The company declined to comment for this story.

Apple and security researchers have said the recipients of the warnings were targeted using ForcedEntry, an advanced piece of software that has been used by Israeli cyber surveillance vendor NSO Group to help foreign spy agencies remotely and invisibly take control of iPhones. Another Israeli cyber firm, QuaDream, has developed a nearly identical hacking tool, Reuters has reported.

Reuters was unable to determine who made or used the spyware to target the Indonesian officials, whether the attempts were successful, and, if so, what the hackers might have obtained as a result.

The attempt to target Indonesian officials, which has not previously been reported, is one of the biggest cases yet seen of the software being used against government, military and defence ministry personnel, according to cybersecurity experts.

Spokespeople for the Indonesian government, the Indonesian military, the Indonesian Defence Ministry and the Indonesian Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN) did not respond to requests for comments and emailed questions.

A spokesman for the Foreign Affairs Ministry said they were unaware of the case and referred Reuters to BSSN.

Airlangga Hartarto, a top ally of the Indonesian president Joko Widodo, did not respond to questions sent to him by Reuters, nor did his representatives.

The use of ForcedEntry, which exploits a flaw in iPhones through a new hacking technique that requires no user interactions, was made public by cybersecurity watchdog Citizen Lab in September 2021. Google security researchers described it as the "most technically sophisticated" hacking attack they had ever seen, in a company blog post published in December.

Apple patched the vulnerability in September last year and in November started sending notification messages to what it called a "small number of users that it discovered may have been targeted."

In response to Reuters questions, an NSO spokesperson denied the company’s software was involved in the targeting of Indonesian officials, dismissing it as "contractually and technologically impossible," without specifying why. The company, which does not disclose the identity of its customers, says it sells its products only to "vetted and legitimate" government entities.

QuaDream did not respond to requests for comment.

In addition to the six officials and advisers who told Reuters they were targeted, a director at a state-owned Indonesian firm that provides weapons to the Indonesian army got the same message from Apple, according to two people with knowledge of the matter. The people asked not to be identified due to the sensitivity of the matter. The company director did not respond to requests for comment.

Within weeks of Apple's notification in November last year, the U.S. government added NSO to the Department of Commerce's 'entity list,' which makes it harder for U.S. companies to do business with it, after determining that the firm's phone-hacking technology had been used by foreign governments to "maliciously target" political dissidents around the world.
