<p>The brutality, motivations and meanness of the villain, are what make any hero-villain battle exciting and convincing. The hero's acts appear logical, only when the circumstances that push him/her to the edge are convincing enough. The fast-paced first-half of Lokesh Kanagaraj's Leo is completely convincing and portrays a happy family of four, who lead a calm and cozy life in the scenic heights of a town in Himachal Pradesh. Circumstances push a cafe-owner Parthiban(who is underestimated as someone selling bun and butter), to do the unthinkable. This not only disrupts the happy family but also sets the tone for what happens entirely thereafter. In the opening credits, the director also acknowledges the inspiration that the 2005 action-thriller film 'A History of Violence', had on Leo.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking of fans, Vijay delivers almost everything they would expect- multiple fight sequences, a grand dance with hundreds of artists, a considerable bit of cussing and whatnot. However, conspicuous in absence was an opening hero-worship-inducing track for Vijay, as has been common in most of his recent films.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Leo is no ordinary film. From a business perspective, it'll attract quite a wide basket- Vijay fans and Lokesh Kanagaraj fans(many of whom are showing up to find out whether this film fits in the Lokesh Cinematic Universe). Just like Vijay delivers what his fans want, Loki(as the director is popularly known) also delivers- violence, multiple killing sprees, and ample references to his previous films and videogame-like chase sequences, characters gorging on mutton biriyani and explosions of godowns. Warm light of yellow-orangish shades and a lot of violence have become an inescapable Lokesh Kanagaraj template. By all means, the bloodbath in Leo far exceeds the previous LCU films. Despite all of the above, the first half ends on a high and Anirudh's music does enough to elevate the sequences.&nbsp;<br />

The second half delves deeper into the life of Parthiban and offers a long-winded explanation of how the film earned its title. A flurry of characters hits us in the letter portion and it takes a while to fathom how they are all connected. While the logic that established the hero-villain battle in the first half seemed convincing, the logic that established the hero-villain war in the second half seemed ridiculous. Paired with Vijay after ages, Trisha Krishnan plays the female lead and has not much to do, except feeling pity and tense about the actions and violent reactions of her better half and taking care of the kids. This is something that's expected of Vijay-film female leads, that is if they aren't killed mid-way.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Director Gautham Vasudev Menon plays a supporting role in the film and appears as a Forest Range Officer. He is more like a friend, philosopher, and guide for Parthiban, who also happens to be a wildlife-rescue expert. At different junctures, when Parthiban faces tough times, Joshy Andrews(played by Menon) helps him out. Given how this role meanders through the film, one wonders if he is a Forest Officer or a Police Officer, or both.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the villain department, there are too many people to talk about. The one that felt the most convincing was the baddie who appeared in the first half of the film. His eyes, mean smile, and his gruesome actions appear amply convincing, without any additional effects and glamour to establish his character. He's the raw and unpolished criminal. Sadly for this film, the raw and unpolished villain seemed a better fit than the Range Rover-owning big boss (Sanjay Dutt) of baddies(who appeared in the second half), with his entourage of black SUVs and a townful of baddies. The villains in the second half appeared all things like the template villain - rich, mindless murderers, alcohol-gulping, exotic cigarette-smoking, stylish old men. While the respective actors played their roles well, the writing that established these villains didn't seem convincing at all.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Overall, it seemed like both Lokesh Kanagaraj and Vijay delivered most of the elements that they have been known for. However, the film feels deficient, to say the least. The director tries extra hard to fit this film into his cinematic Universe, but it feels blatantly force-fitted and counter-productive.</p>

LEO review: A Vijay film with Lokesh Kanagaraj trademarks, it falters after a fast-paced first-half

<p>Dr S Somanath, the Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), is a Gold medallist in Engineering, but did you know that he was also a high school state-topper in Biology? In a special address to budding doctors, Dr&nbsp;Somanath revealed his own teenage passion towards a career in the medical profession and how it did not materialise.</p>

<p>"In my home state (Kerala), I was a topper in Biology and aspired to be a doctor. However, my father (a teacher by profession) asked me to take up Engineering or Math, as the medical profession is very tough and demanding," he smilingly recalled.</p>

<p>He said that his father advised him to pursue Engineering or Mathematics, as it would help him lead a simple life as a Teacher or Professor. Either way, his career choices have made him the Space-sector technocrat Dr S Somanath and he is also topping it up by pursuing an additional Doctorate at IIT Madras' Mechanical Engineering Department.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Addressing students at the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR University in Chennai, Dr Somanath touched upon how the medical and the space domains (though seemingly unconnected) are closely linked, and how ISRO has been working closely with medical professionals as part of the Gaganyaan astronaut programme. Referring to ISRO's keen involvement in the field of bio-astronautics, he said that ISRO was looking to have doctors join their team. The long-term impact of spaceflight can impact the human body in multiple ways and with humans looking to venture deeper and longer into space, such constant synergy between the aerospace and medical domain was a necessity, he said.</p>

<p>He urged budding medical professionals to be well-versed in software and AI tools, as they would significantly impact the profession and cause disruptions in the way healthcare is provided. Sharing some future possibilities, he mentioned how wearable sensors could measure multiple health parameters and physical attributes, thereby helping a centralised computer network predict health hazards and share warnings asking the concerned individual to seek medical attention. "In future, it might be possible to have an embedded medicinal kit in the body. As and when detected and required, the necessary drug in the specific quantity can be delivered to the targeted site,"&nbsp;he said.</p>

<p>Referring to the future requirements of the global space sector, he said that extreme deep space exploration is time-consuming and takes several years. "There is a need to keep humans alive for a long period of time, without ageing. It is possible to build rockets and spacecraft that can work for several decades and travel into deep space, but can we(as seen in science fiction films) pause human life and resume it when required? There are places that we cannot travel to in one lifetime, so such technologies are required. If a human colony has to sustain itself on another planet, the services of Doctors are most essential," he pointed out.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Touching upon AI and Machine Learning, Somanath said that the treatment data and medical history derived from thousands of patients could be used to arrive at better and more effective means of treatment. It will be possible to track the evolution of illnesses, and how they affect people of certain genetics and from certain geographies. "AI and ML courses must be taught in medical universities," he concluded.&nbsp;</p>

'I aspired to be a doctor, picked engineering as per dad's advice,' says ISRO chief

I have not seen many like him, who are able to talk about the Quran, Bible, Thirukkural and Bhagavad Gita with the same depth", Dr Madhavan Nair, former Chairman, ISRO, recalls about his Guru (mentor and guide), Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, in a recently-published autobiography.</p>

<p>October 15th is the Birth Anniversary of Dr. Kalam, the veteran aerospace and defence scientist, who later went on to serve as the President of India.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Having been an integral part of ISRO's growth trajectory from the Thumba days of the late 1960s, to the Chandrayaan-1 days in the first decade of the 21st century, Dr. Madhavan Nair has an immensely powerful story to tell via his memoir 'Rocketing Through the Skies'. Having known Dr. Kalam professionally and personally, Dr. Nair shares several lesser-known facets of Dr. Kalam, who is also admired as India's 'People's President'.</p>

Interestingly, he also shares an anecdote from a Tirupati temple visit along with Dr. Kalam.</p>

<p>Before every rocket launch, the project director and a few others used to visit the Tirupati temple and make an offering of a small model of the rocket. It is a ritual followed even today. I had the opportunity to go to Tirupati with Dr. Kalam once, says Dr. Nair.</p>

Still, he was deeply impressed with Dr. Kalam's knowledge of Hindu philosophy," reads a para from the book.</p>

<p>It also reveals that Dr. Kalam inherited his deep-rooted spirituality from his father Jainulabdeen Marakayar.</p>

<p>While delving into the depths of Science and Rocketry (later, missiles and nuclear weapons) and helping India progress in these domains, Dr. Kalam remained a deeply spiritual and religious individual, the book conveys.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Amid the rush to make history for India, the SLV-3 team leader (Project Director) APJ Abdul Kalam lost three members of his family, in quick succession.</p>

<p>Despite the devastating loss on the personal front, he absorbed his sorrow and toiled for the national mission, a new book reveals. October 15th marks the birth anniversary of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, the veteran rocket and missile scientist, who later went on to serve as the President of India.</p>

First was his sister's husband Ahmed Jamaludeen, who had played a crucial role in his education. A close friend, he was the only person who was literate in English on the entire island of their native Rameswaram in his childhood. <p>After returning from the funeral of his brother-in-law and immersing himself in work, Dr. Kalam lost his father Jainulabdeen Marakayar. It was from his father that Dr. Kalam had inherited his deep-rooted spirituality, the book reveals. Soon after, he also lost his mother. On hearing about her death, he rushed home in a passenger bus for her last rites. He contained all these sorrows within himself and headed the SLV-3 project, Dr. Nair reminisces.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Finally, it was it on August 10, 1979 that the maiden flight of SLV-3 took place from Sriharikota. The four-stage rocket which stood 23 metres tall and weighed 17 tonnes, was meant to carry a 40kg satellite into orbit. While the vehicle lifted off and flew as planned, it faced a setback after the first stage burned out and then it tumbled and fell deep into the Bay of Bengal, 560kms off India's east coast.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After a detailed failure analysis, team ISRO rectified the errors and launched again in July 1980 and the Rohini satellite was injected into orbit.</p>

<p>This was the first time that an Indian satellite was being placed into orbit by an Indian rocket. Ten&nbsp;years after this successful launch, the Government of India bestowed the honour of the Padma Shri award on Dr. Kalam, the book reveals.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the English autobiography, 'Rocketing Through the Skies' Dr. Madhavan Nair narrates the transition from ISRO's modest Thumba-era to the Chandrayaan-era, as he lived through it all and devoted his life for the cause of Indian Space programme. Throughout the book, he shares the cherished experiences and learnings that he could gain by working under Dr. Kalam, whom he refers to as his Guru (teacher). &nbsp;</p>

Overcoming grief after parents' demise, Dr. Kalam led launch of India's first rocket SLV-3

<p>ISRO Chief Dr S.Somanath confirmed that the 'TV-D1'(Test Vehicle Development Flight 1) maiden test flight, as part of the Indian astronaut programme Gaganyaan, will take place on Saturday, October 21. He said that D1 would be followed up with at least three more tests of the same nature. WION has learnt that the launch has been scheduled around 7 am on Saturday (Oct 21). Dr Somanath was speaking to reporters at the Madurai airport, Tamil Nadu.</p>

<p>While developing a fighter plane, it is crucial to prove the mechanism to eject the pilot(s) safely, mid-flight. Likewise, while working towards an astronaut mission, it is of utmost importance to prove the mechanism to eject the crew module(astronaut-carrying shell) to safety, when the rocket is mid-flight.</p>

<p>During the TV-D1 mission, the crew module(within which astronauts would be nestled, in future) and associated systems will be mounted atop a mini-rocket known as the Test vehicle. This is a liquid-fuelled mini rocket based on the L40 stage booster of the GSLV(erstwhile GSLV Mk2) rocket. Mid-flight, as the required conditions(Mach 1.2 or 1.2 times the speed of sound) are achieved, the Crew escape system and crew module would eject from the rocket, when the vehicle is at an altitude of 17 km.</p>

<p>Thereafter, the crew module will be carried to a higher altitude(nearly 2kms away from the rocket) and then it would use onboard parachutes to decelerate and gradually splash down in the sea, about 10kms from the coast of the spaceport in Sriharikota. After splashdown, the Crew Module will be recovered, using a dedicated vessel and diving team from the Indian Navy.</p>

WION has learnt that the Test Vehicle stands ready and the final steps in preparation for Saturday's mission are being carried out. It houses all the systems for deceleration and recovery, which includes multiple parachutes and associated systems.</p>

<p>The avionics systems in CM are in a dual redundant mode(even if one fails, the backup systems takeover) configuration for navigation, sequencing, telemetry, instrumentation and power. The CM in this mission is designed to capture the flight data for evaluation of the performance of various systems.&nbsp;</p>

Gaganyaan's maiden test flight 'TV-D1' on Oct 21: ISRO Chief

<p>There are two kinds of telescopes that are used to peer towards the sky - Optical telescopes, which help capture faint, faraway light sources and enable their study; Radio telescopes, which use giant antennae to capture radio waves from afar and help derive data out of them.</p>

<p>While optical telescopes and observatories are more commonly known, they have a limitation of only operating during the night. However, Radio telescopes can capture radio signals round-the-clock.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Based in a South African desert, the MeerKAT radio telescope comprising 64 antennae is the largest and most sensitive of its kind in the world, so far.</p>

<p>Some interesting observations from this telescope have emerged, thanks to data processing software written by Indian techies.</p>

<p>Known as the 'Automated Radio Telescope Image Processing Pipeline'(ARTIP), it is meant to help process the huge amount of radio signal data generated by the telescope and convert it into data that can be used for scientific studies.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A five-member team from Pune, India, working for this global software firm has designed and developed this software from scratch. We have been working on developing this software since 2017 and we had the first version released in 2020 and even now modifications are being made. The data processed using our software has also been released, Dhanani said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Based on the data derived using our&nbsp;software, the science teams working on it have made multiple publications in international peer-reviewed journals. Among the discoveries made are of OH radicals in faraway galaxies and Rydberg atoms (massive hydrogen atoms) in a distant galaxy, she said. The software processed more than 1 Petabyte (1000Terabytes) of data to arrive at this.</p>

<p>While the data is provided by the software, it is interpreted and studied by the MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey (MALS) team that comprises Indian and South African scientists. The principal investigator in this project is Dr. Neeraj Gupta from the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA).</p>

<p>"All science telescopes make use of data processing software and at some point in time, they require human intervention. With ARTIP, we have ensured that manual intervention is not required. The data can directly be studied by the science teams and they can draw observations from it," she added.</p>

<p>The MeerKAT telescope is only a precursor to the world's largest array of radio telescopes - Square Kilometre Array (SKA). MeerKAT is eventually meant to be subsumed into the SKA. The SKA can scan the skies for radio signals, using its unprecedented capabilities. It is capable of generating massive amounts of data, almost comparable to how much the internet does in a day. Thoughtworks' E4R(Engineering for Research) division hopes to scale up ARTIP to aid the teams working with SKA data as well, Chhaya said.&nbsp;</p>

Based in a South African desert, the MeerKAT radio telescope comprising 64 antennae is the largest and most sensitive of its kind in the world, so far. India: Nokia facility in this state rolls out seven-millionth telecom unit

<p>Indian firm Skyroot Aerospace shot to fame by launching India's first privately-built rocket 'Vikram-S'. After the successful upper-atmospheric rocket launch mission in November 2022 helped them prove their fundamental technology, the firm promised to launch a more advanced rocket 'Vikram-1', that would orbit satellites in space. This maiden spacefaring rocket launch is planned for the first quarter of 2024. Skyroot has also signed a pact to launch the satellites of French firms Promethee Earth Intelligence and ConnectSAT.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Skyroot elaborated that their pact with&nbsp;Prométhée Earth Intelligence was to provide satellite launch services aboard its Vikram rockets for their JAPETUS earth observation constellation.&nbsp; With Expleo and ConnectSAT, they signed a trilateral pact where Expleo will provide Reconfigurable Software for ConnectSAT's IoT Satellite, set to launch on the Vikram-I rocket, building the futuristic OSIRIS satellite constellation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>These MoUs were signed at the Skyroot facility in Hyderabad, as part of the visit of a French business delegation. As a result of these pacts, the French firms would be able to use the pay-and-launch services offered by Skyroot's Vikram series of rockets. The commercial terms and specifics of the pacts are to be worked out between the firms. The pact to launch the French satellites doesn't cover a single mission. Instead, it could happen over multiple launches, the firm said,&nbsp;</p>

<p>The MoU between Prométhée and Skyroot was signed by Olivier Piepsz, Co-Founder and CEO of Prométhée, and Co-Founders of Skyroot Aerospace, Pawan Chandana and Bharath Daka. This follows the exploratory understanding made between the two companies in Paris in July, 2023.&nbsp;The trilateral agreement between Expleo, ConnectSAT, and Skyroot was signed between Abdoulahi Ben Moussa Dia, CEO of ConnectSAT, Frédérique Rebout, Director Alliances and Partners, the Skyroot Co-founders.</p>

<p>Unlike the Vikram-S, Skyroot's Vikram-1 will feature liquid propulsion technology which is more efficient and advanced, thereby making it tough to master. Indian rocket firm Skyroot to launch French satellites from 2024

<p>The alumni of India's prestigious chain of engineering colleges, the government-run Indian Institute of Technology(IIT), are among the CEOs of global firms and hold top positions in various domains. However, the same IITans comprise less than 1 per cent of the workforce at the Indian space agency ISRO.</p>

<p>"Our(country's) best talents are supposed to be engineers from IITs. But, they are not joining ISRO. If we go and try to recruit from IIT, no one joins," ISRO Chief Dr. S. Somanath said in a recent television interview. He also mentioned that the space agency was not getting the best of talent and that IITans comprise less than 1 per cent of those working at ISRO.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This poses interesting questions - When IITans benefit immensely from a high-tech education from the Government of India, why do they refuse to work for a government-run science organisation like ISRO? Why does the government of India not make efforts to ensure that the top engineering talent serves the nation? Why are government-sector science jobs so unattractive for those from the glamorous IITs?</p>

<p>Following the Chandrayaan-3 mission, it was widely talked about that a vast majority of the scientists and technocrats who worked on the mission were those who had graduated from lesser-known engineering colleges.</p>

<p>On the Chandrayaan-3 success, Parliamentarian from Thiruvananthapuram Dr. Shashi Tharoor said in the Lok Sabha, "If IITans went to Silicon Valley, CETans (alumni of College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram) took us to the moon." He was referring to the contributions of the alumni of unsung engineering colleges in various parts of India, and how such people worked on the Chandrayaan-3 mission.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We must proudly salute these alumni of unsung engineering colleges... they serve the public sector with dedication and are the backbone of national enterprises like ISRO", Dr Tharoor said in parliament. Many of his colleagues echoed the sentiment and listed out the scientists who hailed from lesser-known academia in their respective constituencies.</p>

<p>Referring to the exceptional cases of IITans joining ISRO, Dr. S. Somanath said, "Few passionate IITans who think space is important, such people join." Sharing an example of an ISRO team that went to recruit talent from an IIT, Dr Somanath mentioned that 60 per cent of students left the hall after seeing the highest pay that they could earn at the Indian Government-run space agency. "The career ambitions of those joining IITs are different," he said in the interview.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While he said that ISRO was not attracting the best talent, the space agency Chief admitted that the organisation has adequate talent to carry out the work they are performing. However, he also referred to the diversity and vast availability of scientific talent in India.</p>

<p>Indians who get an opportunity to write the IIT entrance (and get in) go there. Thousands and lakhs of such people who have that kind of competency are not getting this opportunity. I am one of them - when I was a student, I never had an opportunity to write an IIT entrance exam or go to an IIT," he said smiling.</p>

<p>"But (my having not gone to IIT) doesn't mean that I was naive or not knowledgeable," he said in the interview.</p>

<p>A vast majority of the scientific talent at ISRO earn their engineering degrees from lesser-known academia. However, as they rise up the ranks within ISRO, they have opportunities to pursue academic courses and PhDs at top-tier Government-run institutions such as the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru and the IITs.</p>

<p>Notably, the Director of ISRO's lead centre Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre(VSSC), Dr. S. Unnikrishnan Nair, completed his PhD from IIT Madras' Mechanical Engineering Department. So did Dr. Veeramuthuvel, Project Director of Chandrayaan-3. At present, Dr&nbsp;S&nbsp;Somanath, Chairman of ISRO, is also pursuing a PhD from the same Department at IIT Madras.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the Office of Alumni and Corporate Relations at IIT Madras, 12 alumni of the institute contributed towards Chandrayaan-3 and more than 140 of them serve ISRO. Recently, the Institute conferred its highest recognition 'The Distinguished Alumnus Award' to twelve ISRO scientists and technocrats who had completed their respective courses there.&nbsp;To their credit, the IITs directly contribute to the space programme by performing theoretical studies, and lab analyses, providing scientific payloads for space missions and studying the scientific data obtained from the sensors.</p>

<p>At the IITs,&nbsp;high-quality engineering courses are offered at a reasonable fee structure, all thanks to the Indian taxpayer. However, one is left wondering why the IITans don't opt in large numbers for a career at ISRO and similar government-run organisations.&nbsp;Perhaps, a significantly better pay structure and career growth opportunities for the science talent at ISRO and related organisations could help attract the best talent.</p>

<p>It is a well-established fact that ISRO scientists earn only a fraction of their counterparts in the Western world and when compared to those in certain private sector jobs in India. Perhaps, an unfavourable view of government work culture, bureaucracy, gradual growth prospects and other factors are dampening the spirits of IITans, who may wish to join the government-run science and technology organisations.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"At the IITs, almost everyone gets placed through campus recruitment even before graduating. Therefore, it’s very rare for anyone from IITs to apply for ISRO’s Central Recruitment Board (ICRB), which is its primary mode of recruitment and requires candidates to take an exam followed by interviews. This is one of the main reasons why very few IITans end up joining ISRO,"&nbsp;reasons&nbsp;Pawan K Chandana, an IITian, who also worked with ISRO and now runs Skyroot Aerospace, the firm which launched India's first privately-built sub-orbital rocket.&nbsp;</p>

<p>During his final months at IIT Kharagpur, ISRO was among the recruiters who had come to campus. Pawan and three others from his batch were the only selected candidates. Looking back at this, he recalls,&nbsp;"ISRO has limits on the number of individuals that can be hired from campus, unlike the large numbers hired through ICRB. There is also a pursuit of higher salaries in the IIT culture, resulting in only a few individuals with a real passion for space choosing to join ISRO," he adds.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Expectedly, IITs and their public outreach machinery go into overdrive during the placement season, adequately hyped up by the media. It is the top package of Rs 25 million (approx $3,00,000) and the likes that make headlines and give false impressions that most of the IITans earn big fat salaries. However, reports compiled based on placement and pay package data have pegged the average pay for B.Tech graduates from most IITs as between Rs. 10 lakh and Rs. 20 lakh. Only a few end up with annual pay packages above Rs 5 million ($60,000).&nbsp;</p>

<p>Therefore, in purely monetary terms, ISRO could well be an option for a fair number of IITans. That's why, there must also be efforts from ISRO's end to better understand the factors behind the minuscule number of IITans within their ranks. IITs could also survey their students to unravel what their students think about joining ISRO.</p>

However, the same IITans comprise less than 1 per cent of the workforce at the Indian space agency ISRO. "Our(country's) best talents are supposed to be engineers from IITs. But, they are not joining ISRO. If we go and try to recruit from IIT, no one joins," ISRO Chief Dr. S. Somanath said in a recent television interview. He also mentioned that the space agency was not getting the best of talent and that IITans comprise less than 1 per cent of those working at ISRO. This poses interesting questions - When IITans benefit immensely from a high-tech education from the Government of India, why do they refuse to work for a government-run science organisation like ISRO? Why does the government of India not make efforts to ensure that the top engineering talent serves the nation? Why are government-sector science jobs so unattractive for those from the glamorous IITs? Following the Chandrayaan-3 mission, it was widely talked about that a vast majority of the scientists and technocrats who worked on the mission were those who had graduated from lesser-known engineering colleges. On the Chandrayaan-3 success, Parliamentarian from Thiruvananthapuram Dr. Shashi Tharoor said in the Lok Sabha, "If IITans went to Silicon Valley, CETans (alumni of College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram) took us to the moon." He was referring to the contributions of the alumni of unsung engineering colleges in various parts of India, and how such people worked on the Chandrayaan-3 mission. "We must proudly salute these alumni of unsung engineering colleges... they serve the public sector with dedication and are the backbone of national enterprises like ISRO", Dr Tharoor said in parliament. Many of his colleagues echoed the sentiment and listed out the scientists who hailed from lesser-known academia in their respective constituencies. Referring to the exceptional cases of IITans joining ISRO, Dr. S. Somanath said, "Few passionate IITans who think space is important, such people join." Sharing an example of an ISRO team that went to recruit talent from an IIT, Dr Somanath mentioned that 60 per cent of students left the hall after seeing the highest pay that they could earn at the Indian Government-run space agency. "The career ambitions of those joining IITs are different," he said in the interview. While he said that ISRO was not attracting the best talent, the space agency Chief admitted that the organisation has adequate talent to carry out the work they are performing. However, he also referred to the diversity and vast availability of scientific talent in India. Indians who get an opportunity to write the IIT entrance (and get in) go there. Thousands and lakhs of such people who have that kind of competency are not getting this opportunity. I am one of them - when I was a student, I never had an opportunity to write an IIT entrance exam or go to an IIT," he said smiling. "But (my having not gone to IIT) doesn't mean that I was naive or not knowledgeable," he said in the interview. A vast majority of the scientific talent at ISRO earn their engineering degrees from lesser-known academia. However, as they rise up the ranks within ISRO, they have opportunities to pursue academic courses and PhDs at top-tier Government-run institutions such as the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru and the IITs. Notably, the Director of ISRO's lead centre Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre(VSSC), Dr. S. Unnikrishnan Nair, completed his PhD from IIT Madras' Mechanical Engineering Department. So did Dr. Veeramuthuvel, Project Director of Chandrayaan-3. At present, Dr S Somanath, Chairman of ISRO, is also pursuing a PhD from the same Department at IIT Madras. According to the Office of Alumni and Corporate Relations at IIT Madras, 12 alumni of the institute contributed towards Chandrayaan-3 and more than 140 of them serve ISRO. Recently, the Institute conferred its highest recognition 'The Distinguished Alumnus Award' to twelve ISRO scientists and technocrats who had completed their respective courses there. To their credit, the IITs directly contribute to the space programme by performing theoretical studies, and lab analyses, providing scientific payloads for space missions and studying the scientific data obtained from the sensors. At the IITs, high-quality engineering courses are offered at a reasonable fee structure, all thanks to the Indian taxpayer. However, one is left wondering why the IITans don't opt in large numbers for a career at ISRO and similar government-run organisations. Perhaps, a significantly better pay structure and career growth opportunities for the science talent at ISRO and related organisations could help attract the best talent. It is a well-established fact that ISRO scientists earn only a fraction of their counterparts in the Western world and when compared to those in certain private sector jobs in India. Perhaps, an unfavourable view of government work culture, bureaucracy, gradual growth prospects and other factors are dampening the spirits of IITans, who may wish to join the government-run science and technology organisations. "At the IITs, almost everyone gets placed through campus recruitment even before graduating. Therefore, it’s very rare for anyone from IITs to apply for ISRO’s Central Recruitment Board (ICRB), which is its primary mode of recruitment and requires candidates to take an exam followed by interviews. This is one of the main reasons why very few IITans end up joining ISRO," reasons Pawan K Chandana, an IITian, who also worked with ISRO and now runs Skyroot Aerospace, the firm which launched India's first privately-built sub-orbital rocket. During his final months at IIT Kharagpur, ISRO was among the recruiters who had come to campus. Pawan and three others from his batch were the only selected candidates. Looking back at this, he recalls, "ISRO has limits on the number of individuals that can be hired from campus, unlike the large numbers hired through ICRB. There is also a pursuit of higher salaries in the IIT culture, resulting in only a few individuals with a real passion for space choosing to join ISRO," he adds. <p>In the pre-match presser, Rohit expressed confidence ahead of Sunday's game and shared that the team had come well prepared.
