<p>"The crew was never in any danger and the maneuver had no impact on station operations," read a statement released by NASA about the avoidance maneuver. "Without the maneuver, it was predicted that the fragment could have passed within around a half-mile from the station."</p>

<p>This was not the first time that the ISS had to perform such avoidance maneuvers in the recent past as they had to avoid space debris in November and December of 2021. Any collision with space debris can result in massive damage to the system and also the astronauts inside the ISS.</p>

<p>Russian space agency Roscosmos posted a video on Telegram of the entire process as they used an uncrewed Progress 81 cargo ship to move the orbiting lab away from the path of the debris.</p>

<p>"I confirm that at 22.03 Moscow time, the engines of the Russian Progress MS-20 transport cargo ship carried out an unscheduled maneuver to avoid a dangerous approach of the International Space Station with a fragment of the Kosmos-1408 spacecraft," Roscosmos chief Dmitry Rogozin said.</p>

Human rights groups urge UN to impose travel ban on Taliban leadership

<p>Iran on Monday hanged a Sunni extremist who was sentenced to death for killing two Shiite clerics and wounding another in early April, the judiciary said.</p>

<p>A 21-year-old national of Uzbek origin carried out the April 5 stabbing attack at the Imam Reza shrine which honours one of the most revered figures in Shiite Islam.</p>

<p>The killings happened during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan when large crowds of worshippers had gathered at the shrine, in Iran's second-largest city Mashhad.</p>

<p>"The death sentence against Abdolatif Moradi was carried out by hanging this morning, in the presence of a group of citizens and officials in Vakilabad prison in Mashhad," said provincial judiciary chief Gholamali Sadeghi, quoted by the judiciary's website Mizan Online.</p>

<p>The assailant "was accused of moharebeh ('war against God', in Persian) using a weapon to terrorise the population in the shrine and even outside it," Sadeghi added.</p>

<p>The assailant stabbed one of the victims 20 times, Tasnim news agency reported earlier.</p>

<p>On June 7, the judiciary announced Moradi's death sentence, adding that his lawyer had appealed to the Supreme Court.</p>

<p>According to local media, Moradi entered Iran illegally a year earlier from Pakistan and settled in Mashhad, the country's main holy city.</p>

<p>Iranian leaders blamed "takfiri elements" for the attack. The term takfiri in Iran and in several other countries refers to radical Sunni Islamist groups.</p>

<p>One of the clerics, Mohammad Aslani, died immediately while the death of the second, Sadegh Darai, was announced two days later.</p>

The study, which was published in the Nature journal, hailed the drug as an effective medicine for people suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) – a condition which does not have any proper treatment as of now. However, the study has created a lot of controversy as Canadian regulators have said that they will be reviewing the clinical trials after a number of complaints from the participants regarding “alleged investigator misconduct”.</p>

<p>Richard Yensen, one of the therapists involved in the studies, was also accused of sexual assault by a subject called Meaghan Buisson. According to The Guardian, Buisson accused him of sexual assault constituting battery, but the file was not taken forward by the Canadian police and prosecutors.</p>

Canadian authorities to review MDMA trials over alleged abuse of study participants

<p>The Indian state of Meghalaya is well known for the huge amount of rainfall it receives every year and Mawsynram – known as the wettest place in the country – broke a 66-year-old record this week. On Friday, the town experienced a mammoth 1003.6 mm of rainfall in 24 hours – the highest ever on a day in June, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The previous record for most rainfall in a single day in Mawsynram was 944.7 mm on 7 June 1966, according to a PTI report.</p>

<p>"Mawsynram is at present the wettest place in India, with an average annual rainfall of 11802.4 mm (average of the 1974-2022 period). Cherrapunji receives 11359.4 mm of rainfall in a year (average of the 1971-2020 period)," Sunit Das, Scientist at IMD's regional centre in Guwahati, told PTI.</p>

<p>Cherrapunji, which is among the wettest places in the world, also saw around 972 mm of rainfall on the same day – the highest in June since 1995 and the third highest in the last 122 years.</p>

<p>"It doesn't always rain like this. 50-60 cm is normal once or twice every year. But 80 cm and above is certainly not usual," Das told PTI while explaining the sudden increase in rainfall.</p>

<p>The current situation in Sri Lanka makes the talks with IMF even more important after the country defaulted on its US$51 billion foreign debt in April. The talks between the IMF and the government started on Monday and according to an AFP report, they will continue for 10 more days.</p>

<p>Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will also hold talks with Australian Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil to "deepen cooperation and assist Sri Lanka as the country faces very difficult economic times," according to an official statement released by the Australian government.</p>

<p>The Agneepath scheme for recruitments in the armed forces by the Indian government has resulted in a number of protests around the country. They have also faced a lot of criticism from the opposition parties and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has now alleged that the central government was trying to create their own “armed cadre” with the help of the programme. Mamata also slammed BJP general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya for his remarks on giving priority to the people recruited through the Agneepath scheme when it comes to guarding BJP offices.</p>

<p>"The BJP is trying to create its own armed cadre base through this scheme. What will they do after four years? The party wants to give arms into the hands of the youth," Mamata was quoted by PTI.</p>

<p>A similar allegation was brought by Janata Dal Secular leader HD Kumaraswamy who earlier said that the Agneepath scheme is a way to create an army for the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).</p>

<p>“This is a plan to bring the army under RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) control and use the 75% (out of the 10 lakh) who come out of the army and will be spread out around the country. Is the Agnipath scheme to create Agniveer’s a ploy to implement the same measures (agenda),” he said according to PTI.</p>

<p>During the 50th session of the Human Rights Council, the participants analysed in detail the violations of child rights in conflict zones and drew particular attention to the negative consequences of madrasas in the indoctrination of children - a violation of their right to education in Afghanistan and Pakistan.</p>

<p>The meeting witnessed the presence of civil society organizations, journalists, experts, human rights activists, researchers, diplomats and panelists.</p>

<p>Among other issues that were discussed in the meeting were the root causes of recruitment and forced conscription of children in conflicts in Africa and in Asia principally in the Sahel region, in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Central African Republic, Mali, Somalia, in Afghanistan, in Syria, in Iraq, in Yemen, and in Ukraine.</p>

Human Rights Council expresses concern over indoctrination of children in Pakistan, Afghanistan madrasas

<p>External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar on Sunday expressed confidence in India-Bangladesh ties and said that the countries look forward to cooperating in new domains including cyber security and upgradation of the railway system.</p>

<p>"We now look forward to working with Bangladesh to take our ties to new domains...including cyber security, upgradation of the railway system," Jaishankar said during the 7th India-Bangladesh Joint Consultative Commission meeting in New Delhi today.</p>

<p>Speaking on trade with Bangladesh, Jaishankar said, "Today Bangladesh is our largest development &amp; trade partner in the region." Jaishankar also mentioned how both countries came together to fight the pandemic. The EAM said, "We jointly overcame pandemic in terms of vaccine, medicine supply."</p>

<p>The first physical JCC Meeting between India and Bangladesh is being held in New Delhi today and EAM S Jaishankar is the co-chair of the meeting along with his Bangladeshi counterpart AK Abdul Momen.</p>

<p>The JCC is to review the bilateral ties including cooperation in the wake of COVID-19, border management and security, trade and investment, connectivity, energy, water resources, development partnership and regional and multilateral issues, the MEA said earlier in a statement.</p>
