Eight new coronavirus cases were confirmed in Kerala; four from Kannur, three from Kozhikode and one from Kasaragod, state health minister&nbsp;KK Shailaja said.

Eight more coronavirus cases were reported in Punjab today, taking the total number of coronavirus cases in the state to 184. Thirteen people have died due the virus in the state.

The Tamil Nadu government said on Tuesday that 1,173 samples tested positive for the virus on Monday.

"Out of the 31 samples, twenty-one belong to a single source contact, one is an inter-state travel and nine are other contacts. Everybody has been traced to a particular contact," Tamil Nadu health secretary said.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, The Indian Army said a doctor who was involved in fighting the coronavirus tested positive for the virus.

COVID-19: Mumbai reports 204 cases, 11 deaths in one day

The International Monetary Fund(IMF) said on Tuesday that the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/now-china-approves-trials-for-two-more-coronavirus-vaccines-292466">coronavirus</a> pandemic recovery would take a more coordinated stimulus.

"The cumulative loss to global GDP over 2020 and 2021 from the pandemic crisis could be around $9 trillion, greater than the economies of Japan and Germany combined," it said.

"Global growth is projected at –3.0 per cent in 2020, an outcome far worse than during the 2009 global financial crisis," IMF said.

"Several economies in the region are forecast to grow at modest rates, including India which is set to grow at 1.9 per cent," the report said.

The IMF projected India's growth to 7.4 per cent in 2021. It said India will grow at 1.9 per cent this year as the global economy stares at a recession but said it is only one of the two major economies to record positive growth, other being China which is set to grow at 1.2 per cent this year.

In another observation, the international fund had earlier said that Sub-Saharan African economies were projected to contract by 1.6 per cent in 2020 due to lockdowns as it projected the global economy to contract by 3.0 per cent this year.

"Among emerging market and developing economies, all countries face a health crisis... which will have a severe impact on economic activity in commodity exporters," said the report.

"Even in countries not experiencing widespread detected outbreaks... the significant downward revision to the 2020 growth projection reflects large anticipated domestic disruptions to economic activity from COVID-19," the IMF added.

According to a study released on Monday, too little testing and long waits to confirm the results are few of the reasons behind the misleading figures.

The ratio of cases resulting in deaths through April 10 was examined by researchers at a consortium of Brazilian universities and institutes.

The figures were then compared with data on the expected death rate from the World Health Organization(WHO) the much higher-than-expected death rate in Brazil indicates there are many more cases of the virus than are being counted.

The study estimates only 8 per cent of cases are being officially reported. The consortium known as the center for health operations and intelligence identifies that the government has focused on testing only serious cases rather than all suspected cases.

The center and medical professionals have also complained of long wait times to get test results. On Monday according to official figures, Brazil’s coronavirus death toll rose to 1,328 &nbsp;while the number of confirmed cases hit 23,430 as of last Thursday, Brazil had around 127,000 suspected cases and carried out just short of 63,000 tests.&nbsp;

According to the health ministry, more than 93,000 tests are still being processed for results but the researchers now have some grim projections.

According to them, by April 20, the number of cases will grow to 25,164 in its most optimistic scenario and 60,413 cases in its most pessimistic.

While hospitalizations for severe respiratory symptoms has more than trebled in Brazil this year, only 12 per cent of the total cases have been confirmed as COVID-19 positive.

The outbreak has already stoked tension in the Brazilian government. The right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro has been downplaying risks of the virus and urging the country to return to normal.

The country which was earlier criticised for taking a "soft" approach to fight COVID-19 has since reported a rising number of cases.

Health agency said it had recorded a total of 11,445 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 1,033 deaths.

Last week the country had reported 100 deaths in one-day alarming officials. Sweden's public health agency had said earlier that it had recorded 7,693 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the country.

114 people had died due to the virus last week. Sweden had earlier reportedly kept its schools, restaurants and bars open. The country also avoided a lockdown while Europe had already put stringent lockdown measures in place.

Earlier, the country had rejected claims by US President Trump that its approach to containing the COVID-19 was too soft and that it was "suffering" more than others.

"There aren't too many of them... They talk about Sweden, but Sweden is suffering very gravely," Trump had said at a news conference.&nbsp;

However, Sweden's foreign minister said: "We are doing about the same things that many other countries are doing, but in a different way, we trust that people take responsibility."

State epidemiologist Anders Tegnell at Sweden's Public Health Agency added: "No, we don't share his opinion."&nbsp;

"Of course we're suffering. Everybody in the world is suffering right now, in different ways," he said, adding," but Swedish healthcare, which I guess he alludes to... is taking care of this in a very good manner. It's a lot of work, it's a lot of stress on the personnel and it's really a fight for them every day, but it's working."

"The approvals pave the way for early-stage human trials", Wu Yuanbin, spokesman for China's Ministry of Science and Technology said on Tuesday.

Chinese authorities had earlier approved one vaccine developed by Sinovac Biotech to go in for clinical trial. On Sunday, it had also approved a vaccine for trial from the Wuhan Institute of Biological Products and the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

In a study,&nbsp;researchers had concluded that lifting lockdowns without a valid vaccine could prove to be fatal.

The potential for a second wave of COVID-19 infections could increase “exponentially” if measures are relaxed too quickly and governments become complacent, it said.

The study published in The Lancet medical journal&nbsp;used a model based on coronavirus reproduction data from 10 Chinese provinces with the highest number of confirmed cases.

The researchers said their findings were critical for countries in the early stages of a similar lockdown with UK, US and several other European countries in various stages of lockdown and registering high death rates.

While the race is underway worldwide to find the vaccine, Wu said: "vaccination of subjects during the first phase of clinical trials and the recruitment of volunteers for the second phase of clinical trials began on April 9."

"It's the world's first novel coronavirus vaccine to initiate Phase II clinical studies," Wu added.
