Irish author Paul Lynch has won the 2023 Booker Prize for his fifth novel 'Prophet Song'. Lynch said, "It is immense pleasure that I bring the Booker home to Ireland."

The Irish author is known for his poetic style of writing with exploration of complex themes. He has published five novels and has also won the prestigious Kerry Group Irish Fiction Award.

The novel 'Prophet Song' is a dystopian novel that depicts the struggles of the Stack family of four who are trying to save themselves as the Republic of Ireland slips into totalitarianism.

The narrative of the book is unconventional, as there are no paragraph breaks. It draws inspiration from the Syrian Civil War, said Lynch, and how that ensued a refugee crisis and the West's indifference to their plight.

The Chair of Judges, Esi Edugyan described the book as "soul-shattering and true". One review heralded it as a "crucial book for our current time" as it captures the rise of political extremism.

Other Shortlisted Books for Booker Prize 2023

The Shortlist for the Booker Prize 2023 included- 'The Bee Sting' by Paul Murray, 'Western Lane' by Chetna Maroo, 'This Other Eden' by Paul Harding, 'If I Survive You' by Jonathan Escoffery and 'Study of Obedience' by Sarah Bernstein.

Munching on a packet of nachos has become a norm for online gamers all around the world. But the sound of loud crunch can be utterly annoying and distracting for other gamers online. So what’s the solution? An AI app, launched earlier this month, removes the sound of chewing and crunching from voice chats, Zoom or any call that uses headphones.

The AI-developed crunch-cancellation software, Doritos Silent, has been especially made for professional gamers, as snacking and gaming go hand-in-hand. But it can of course be used by non-gamers as well to save them from the annoyance of the crispy crunch while talking to someone who loves to eat chips.

Doritos Silent: Groundbreaking crunch-cancellation software

“It works on anything that accepts a microphone,” said Dylan Fashbaugh, lead developer at Brooklyn-based Smooth Technology which worked with Doritos to create the free app. It can be used on any PC, and the company says it will eventually be expanded to other devices.

Flashbaugh has been a gamer himself, for about 20 years and is familiar with the annoyance of fellow gamers chewing loudly on chips.

“Crunch is one of the most distracting features that could throw someone off their game,” said Mustafa Shamseldin, chief marketing officer of international foods at PepsiCo, which owns Doritos.

The project was not based on the observation of two gaming enthusiasts, instead, Doritos surveyed more than 3,000 people before developing the software. The survey included people from China, India, Portugal, Britain and the United States, and found that gamers like to snack while playing, but they also think the sounds of other people snacking are distracting.

Why not make Doritos less crunchy instead?

Well, the same research showed crunch is the best part, and that is why people prefer eating Doritos.

“There is something about the crunch that has to do with it funnily enough,” said Fernando Kahane, the head of global marketing for the chip brand.

Many people crave crunchy foods because they are more stimulating to eat than soft foods, which is why chips are a go-to snack. “That’s one of the reasons Doritos is so popular with gamers,” Kahane said.

“Instead of having to launch new Doritos, we could actually solve that pain point with a technology,” said Kahane.

The idea of making Doritos less crispy surfaced several years ago and was not welcomed by many. Therefore, to tackle the crunch issue, Doritos turned to AI. The AI software made for Doritos actually works on other food products as well, like chips, crackers and even raw vegetables, said Kahane.

A thick layer of smog on Monday (Nov 27) led to deterioration of air quality of Indian capital Delhi. There was earlier a slight improvement with Air Quality Index (AQI) on Sunday at 389 in the “very poor” category as compared to 414 in the “severe” category on Friday.

On Monday, it came back to severe category, as per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), which said RK Puram recorded an AQI of 419 at 7:00 am local time.

Other areas also recorded AQI in the severe category with ITO at 435, Dwarka Sector 8 at 402, Jahangirpuri at 437 and Ashok Vihar at 455.

There is also the possibility of rain in Delhi and nearby areas that will likely curb pollution in the city.

Though the capital city’s air quality showed slight improvement from skyrocketing pollution levels in recent days, there has been no complete relief from it.

The recent surge in AQI levels can be attributed to the lifting of several restrictions by the Centre last Saturday. It provides allowance for construction activities and the entry of trucks into Delhi from other states.

However, restrictions under stages 1 to 3 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) remained in place.

Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai conducted a meeting on Friday in the wake of increasing pollution in the city.

"Some increase in the pollution of Delhi has been noted. We had a meeting regarding it. The incidents of stubble burning are very few now, and the level of pollution is still increasing. Scientists reported 2-3 factors for this. The first is that vehicle pollution's contribution is 36 per cent. The second factor is biomass burning. We made some major decisions after seeing this, Gopal Rai said.

(With inputs from agencies)

India: Delhi woman bites off husband's ear during verbal fight

Australia’s competition regulator on Monday advised to revise its competition laws in the wake of the rapid expansion of digital platforms like Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta and Microsoft in the country.

The reasoning provided by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) behind this announcement was the increasing risk of these platforms being involved in invasive data collection and other practices.

"Our proposed reforms include a call for targeted consumer protections and service-specific codes to prevent anti-competitive conduct by particular designated digital platforms," ACCC Chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb said.

Australian watchdog calls for new competition laws for digital platforms

ACCC has not made any specific findings of anti-competitive conduct but said digital platforms with significant market power can manipulate it to their benefit.

As per ACCC, these digital platforms can utilise their market hegemony such as the bundling of products, and pre-installation and default settings to limit customer choice or deter innovation from competitors.

When it comes to data collection, ACCC found that these providers have greater access to rich consumer data via expansion, which is unfair to other digital platforms For example, Amazon, Apple and Google collect vast amounts of consumer data through smart home devices. It’s not always clear from the relevant privacy policies if the data collected exceeds that which is needed for device functionality or product improvement.

The regulator has also proposed new mandatory obligations on all digital platforms to address scams, harmful apps, and fake reviews, including notice and action requirements and stronger verification of business users and reviews.

The report also considers the role of digital platform providers in developing emerging technologies. The five largest digital platforms, mentioned earlier, are making investments in research and development and buying other smaller companies in areas such as generative AI to ensure they remain in comfortable positions in the developing digital economy.

“The critical role digital platform service providers have in the development of new technologies like artificial intelligence and cloud computing demonstrates their importance to the Australian economy, now and in the future,” Cass-Gottlieb said.

Geminids meteor shower 2023: The year’s best and ‘most intense’ meteor shower is all set to reach its peak around this weekend. The starry activity will begin this Sunday and continue till December 24 with fluctuating intensity.

As per NASA, the Geminids will reach their peak around Dec 13 and Dec 14, but may still be visible during this weekend if seen under proper observing conditions.

Here is everything you need to know about the Geminid meteor showers.

Geminid Meteor Shower

Generally, all meteor showers occur when Earth passes through debris trails left by comets and other heavenly objects. The debris that collides with our atmosphere disintegrates into these colourful small lights that we call meteors.

But Geminid meteor shower is a bit different and doesn’t originate from a comet, but rather from an asteroid.

Scientists believe that 3200 Phaethon was the asteroid from which Geminids originated. The 3200 Phaethon broke apart under the stresses of the asteroid’s rotation, which caused it to eject billions of tonnes of dust and debris into the solar system.

The Geminid meteor showers first started appearing in the mid-1800s. At that time, only 10 to 20 meteors could be seen per hour. Since that time, the Geminids have grown into a major meteor shower that peaks with 120 meteors visible per hour under perfect conditions.

Geminid Meteor Shower 2023: When does it peak?

The Geminids are active now through Dec 24, but activity will peak between Dec 13 and 14, according to the American Meteor Society. They are intensely bright and fast meteors that are considered one of the best cosmic shows of the year.
If weather allows and conditions are perfect, they can be seen this Sunday (Nov 26) as well.

Geminid Meteor Shower 2023: What is the best time to watch it?

While the shower is best viewed during the night and predawn hours, activity typically begins around 9:00 or 10:00 pm UTC, according to NASA. The cherry on the cake is that this shower is visible across the globe.

We all have heard of how important eye contact is during communication, and how it can help you engage better with the person you’re communicating with. But eye contact is more than just that, it can be used as a powerful social behavioural cue.

As per a recent by researchers in Canada, eye contact is quite rare but even that little gaze can act as a predictive factor for subsequent social behaviour.

"This study is one of the first to show the prevalence of eye-to-eye looking during real-life interactions," says first author Florence Mayrand, an experimental psychologist at McGill University in Canada.

How was the study conducted?

The study was conducted in two parts. In the first part, Mayrand and her colleagues looked at eye-gazing patterns during face-to-face conversations between 15 pairs of strangers, made up of 25 women and 5 men, all between the ages of 18 and 24.

The pairs ranked 12 items in order of usefulness in a made-up survival situation while wearing mobile eye-tracking glasses with a front-facing camera recording their field of view. The researchers recorded how often the participants looked at each other's mouths and eyes.

In the second part, researchers measured each individual's gaze in reaction to an image of their partner's face looking in different directions. Then the final analysis was brought down to 12 females and 2 males in 7 pairs.

What does the study show?

The interactions between people during the study deduced that each participant looked away more than they looked directly at their partner’s face. While looking at each other’s faces, they mostly looked at the mouth and nearby eye regions, and they rarely engaged in mutual eye-to-eye contact. The most common was eye-to-mouth mutual-looking.

"We discovered that participants spent only about 12 per cent of conversation time in interactive looking, meaning that they gazed at each other's faces simultaneously for just 12 per cent of the interaction duration," Mayrand says.

"Even more surprisingly, within those interactions, participants engaged in mutual eye-to-eye contact only 3.5 per cent of the time."

Why is eye contact important?

As per the research, the amount of time people spend looking each other in the eyes may be important for communicating social messages between them and different mutual looking patterns may be useful for relaying specific messages in different combinations.

The team says that they will further look into how conversational context affects people looking at each other’s faces with a larger sample size.

To make the Thanksgiving dinner more special, a package of holiday food was shipped to the ISS by the SpaceX CRS-29 Dragon resupply service mission, which took off from Kennedy Space Center, Florida on Nov 9. It reached the ISS on Nov 11.

The festive treats were shipped in foil and plastic packaging which are generally refrigerated or dehydrated. The ISS crew prepares these meals by simply adding water and heating in a suitcase-sized food warmer.

On that day, their seventh of an 84-day mission, Gibson and Pogue completed a 6-hour and 33-minute spacewalk, while Carr remained in the Multiple Docking Adaptor with no access to food. All three made up for missing lunch by consuming two meals at dinner time, although neither included special items for Thanksgiving.
