New AI-related Words Added to Cambridge Dictionary

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) become more and more prevalent in our daily lives, the Cambridge Dictionary has added some new AI-related words, based on what people searched the most in 2023.

A chatbot is a computer program designed to have conversations with people, usually over the internet.

Generative AI or GenAI is a different kind of chatbot in which computers can create text and images.

LLM is a complex mathematical representation of language that is based on very large amounts of data and allows computers to produce language that seems similar to what a human might say.

When using the word hallucinate in AI, it means something that produces false information. "When an AI hallucinates, it produces false information," the Cambridge Dictionary explains.

The process of designing prompts (instructions given to an AI by a human using natural language rather than computer language) that will give the best possible results or answers.

'Hallucinate': Cambridge Dictionary Word of the Year is AI-inspired

Cambridge Dictionary's Word of the Year 2023

A week ago, the Cambridge Dictionary announced 'Hallucinate' as its Word of the Year for 2023. The word was announced in the context of AI developments taking place in the year.

The traditional meaning of hallucination as per the dictionary is "to seem to see, hear, feel or smell something that does not exist", it's almost you imagining things that aren't there.

How is the word connected to the AI realm?

Cambridge Dictionary provided some examples of how you can use the word in the AI realm. "The latest version of the chatbot is greatly improved but it will still hallucinate facts", it wrote.

Why the word was added to the dictionary?

Dr Shevlin, from the University of Cambridge, said, "hallucinate is an evocative verb implying an agent experiencing a disconnect from reality. his linguistic choice reflects a subtle yet profound shift in perception: the AI, not the user, is the one hallucinating."

A week ago, the Cambridge Dictionary announced 'Hallucinate' as its Word of the Year for 2023.

A ‘lost asteroid’ has a slight possibility of impacting Earth in 2024, NASA has warned. The asteroid named 2007 FT3 is floating through space and there is a tiny chance that it might strike Earth next year.

This is not the first time that NASA has found an asteroid approaching Earth, and this will also not be the last. There are currently over 32,000 known near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) and more than 120 known short-period near-Earth comets (NECs). Each of these space elements has the ability to cause some form of destruction to Earth if not averted successfully.

2007 FT3: ‘Lost asteroid’ might find its way to Earth

In 2007, scientists spotted an object floating through space, which they named 2007 FT3. The object was revealed to be an asteroid but soon lost its flight path and scientists lost track of it. The asteroid had a short observation arc of only 1.2 days, after which it was not recovered despite targeted observations made by the scientists. The scary part is that it has not been seen since 2007.

NASA scientists estimate that this asteroid has probably now found its way back to Earth. They further say that there is a possibility that 2007 FT3 will hit Earth next year. But how high is the possibility? Well, NASA has quantified it.

NASA suggests that 2007 FT3 has a probability of 0.0000087 per cent or 1 in 11.5 million chance of striking Earth in October 2024. There is another possibility of it striking Earth in March 2024 with the probability standing at 0.0000096 per cent, or 1 in 10 million. In both cases, the asteroid has the potential to release the energy equivalent to the detonation of 2.6 billion tons of TNT.

How dangerous it could be?

As per NASA’s estimates, in both cases, the amount of energy released from the collision of an asteroid and Earth can cause a considerable amount of regional destruction. However, the destruction would be weak enough to cause any global damage.

You might have heard of partners in crime, but Japan is offering people a partner in crying. Japanese companies are hiring “handsome weeping boys” for their employees who first make them cry and then cry with them and console them. As bizarre as it may sound, this unconventional method has its own logical reasoning.

The idea of a “handsome weeping boy” in Japanese offices was initiated by Hiroki Tekai, who is the founder of crying workshops in Tokyo. The concept of this practice is to bring people together so they can work better as a team by showing their vulnerable side.

First, they will show sad films to team of group of people in a separate room from their work desks. These films are mostly about cute little pets getting hurt or left alone, or about father-daughter relationships. Once everyone in the room starts weeping or sobbing, the ikemeso danshi will walk around with a large cotton handkerchief and softly wipe the tears from people’s faces. He then diligently refolds the handkerchief for each person to offer them a dry patch.
