Meditation for Beginners: 6 Practical Tips and Techniques

Pay close attention to your breath. Follow it through your nose all the way down to your lungs and try counting ‘one’ as you take the first breath and keep repeating till 10.

As a beginner, it is enough to sit for five minutes or even less. If you feel like it’s less, a 10-minute meditation is great for beginners. Once it becomes a habit, you can gradually increase the time.

Another thing you can do is focus your attention on one body part at a time. Start at the soles of your feet, slowly move to your toes, the tops of your feet, your ankles, all the way to the top of your head.

You can use your surroundings as a prop to meditate on different days. Just keep your eyes on one spot, and notice the light in the room you are in. Another day, just focus on noticing sounds.

Guided meditation is a type of meditation led by a teacher who explains what to do. They cue us when to open and close our eyes, how to breathe, and break down other meditation techniques.

Consistency is the key while meditating as a beginner. One should become familiar to finding calm in any type of surroundings, for which meditating daily is essential.

7 Upcoming OTT Releases in December 2023

This nutritious legume was first cultivated 5000 years ago in China. Soybeans are a rich source of proteins, vitamins, minerals and fibres. Soybean and soy foods reduce the risk of a range of health problems and have amazing health benefits.

Soybean has only 10-15 per cent of the total fat as saturated. Unlike other protein sources, like ground beef which has much more saturated fat, soybean chunks are a healthier option for protein intake.

Soybean is a good source of protein and regular intake of soybean might lead you to consume lesser amount of food, which may help in reducing obesity. Studies have shown that soy proteins may reduce body weight and body fat mass.

Making soy a regular part of your diet may help you avoid high blood pressure, aka hypertension. Soy packs a lot of protein with few carbs, a mix that brings your blood pressure down.

Soybeans may help in cancer prevention, specifically breast cancer. Several soybean compounds like isoflavones and lunasin are responsible for cancer-preventive effects. Exposure to isoflavones early in life may be protective against breast cancer later in life.

Consumption of soy products may reduce the risk of osteoporosis which is characterised by reduced bone density and an increased risk of fractures, especially in older women. Women who have undergone menopause are often suggested to consume soy products.

Menopause can be very unpleasant with symptoms like sweating, hot flashes and mood swings. Studies indicate that isoflavones, a family of phytoestrogens found in soybeans, may alleviate these symptoms and help in easing menopause.

World AIDS Day: 5 Common Myths About HIV/AIDS Busted

It is a myth that HIV gets transmitted via cough, touch and shaking hands. Routine touch or cough does not transmit HIV. The virus can only be transmitted if the skin has ulcerations or abrasions.

It is a myth that every HIV-positive person will die in a few months. With proper treatment, people diagnosed with HIV can live a normal life.

HIV is the infection that causes AIDS. But this doesn’t mean all HIV-positive individuals will develop AIDS. With proper medication, the level of HIV infection can be controlled, preventing AIDS.

HIV-positive People Cannot Have Children Safely

It is a myth that children born to HIV-positive women will also be HIV-positive. The risk of transmission of the virus to newborns can be brought down to less than 2% with antiretroviral treatment and C-section.

Eating with HIV-infected People Transmits Disease

It is a myth that sharing food, drink, and cooking utensils with an HIV-infected patient increases one's risk of getting HIV. The virus can’t be passed through these activities even if the person preparing the food is HIV positive.

A new Bollywood film is releasing on Sam Manekshaw, India’s first Field Marshal who had a storied military career spanning four decades.
What was more striking was Manekshaw and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s tenuous equation.

Sam Bahadur’s trailer gave a glimpse into Mankeshaw-Indira tensions

Recently, RSVP Movies dropped the trailer for Vicky Kaushal-starrer Sam Bahadur. Apart from Vicky’s fierce looks and gripping background score, what caught my attention was a snippet featuring Sana Fatima Sheikh.

Sheikh, who plays the character of Gandhi in the movie, is seen having a private conversation with Manekshaw.

In the trailer, Sheikh says, “Sam, are you planning something?” to which Kaushal replies, “What do you think about it?”. Sheikh then says, “You can’t”.

This cryptic conversation shown between Sheikh and Kaushal is not about a war against Pakistan but is probably pointing more towards the rumours at the time about Makenshaw planning to overthrow Indira Gandhi.

This becomes clear from the movie’s teaser, released earlier, in which Kaushal was seen saying “I have no interest in politics. The Army is my life” to Sheikh.

Sam Bahadur: When Indira Gandhi suspected Sam Manekshaw of 'planning a military coup'

Good news for skygazers! A strong geomagnetic storm coupled with bright auroras might be visible to the naked eye tonight or on Friday night in the northern United States and Europe. These cosmic phenomena are occurring as the result of multiple explosions from the sun this week that led to the outbursts of plasma from the sun’s corona toward Earth. These are known as coronal mass ejections (CMEs).

CMEs are common but what’s different this time would be their consolidation into one humungous CME that is triggering geomagnetic storms and auroras. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are calling it a “cannibal” CME.

World AIDS Day 2023: December 1 has been observed as World AIDS Day globally since 1998. It is an international day dedicated to raising awareness about one of the most fatal diseases- AIDS. It is caused by the spread of HIV infection and is a life-threatening condition.

On this day, people around the world unite in one voice to show their support for people living with the condition and to remember those who lost their lives to AIDS. Here’s more to know about the day.

World AIDS Day was first ideated in August 1987 by James Bunn and Thomas Netter, two public information officers for the Global Programme on aids at the WHO. It was solidified in an international day of observance on 1 Dec 1988.

Dec 1 was specifically chosen as the day to observe the condition as it would get maximum coverage by the Western news media, sufficiently long following the US elections but before the Christmas holidays.

Each year since 1988, Popes have released a greeting message for patients and doctors on World AIDS Day. In 2016, a collection of HIV and AIDS-related NGOs started a campaign to rename World AIDS Day to World HIV Day. They claim the change will emphasise social justice issues and the advancement of treatments like pre-exposure prophylaxis.

This year’s theme for World AIDS Day is “Let communities lead.” This annual event serves as a reminder of the global struggle to end HIV-related stigma, an opportunity to honour those we have lost, and a rallying cry to commit to working toward a day when HIV is no longer a public health threat.

In its first two years, the theme of World AIDS Day focused on children and young people. While the choice of this theme was criticised at the time by some for ignoring the fact that people of all ages may become infected with HIV, the theme helped alleviate some of the stigma surrounding the disease and boost recognition of the problem as a family disease.
