Whenever a piece of food like turkey gets stuck in the throat and you search for ways to let it pass easily through your oesophagus, the most common solution is drinking cola. Many credible health websites and even doctors or emergency workers have recommended the same.

However, a new study dispels this cola trick as a myth and shows that drinking cola might not help in clearing a blocked oesophagus.

The new research published in the Christmas issue of the British Medical Association journal says that the efficacy of using cola to clear a blocked oesophagus is unknown.

"If food gets stuck in the oesophagus, it is a frightening and painful sensation. It isn't the same as choking when food gets stuck in the trachea, but it certainly can be as frightening as choking," the study's lead author, Dr Arjan Bredenoord, a professor of gastroenterology at Amsterdam University Medical Centers in the Netherlands, told UPI via email.

In such a situation, it is best to seek appropriate medical treatment, instead of trying DIYs at home.

Why do people generally use cola?

Earlier, quite a few researches suggested that drinking a carbonated beverage might help dislodge food stuck in the food pipe.

Doctors believe that the carbon dioxide gas present in soda helps disintegrate the food. It is also thought that some of the soda gets into the stomach, which then releases gas. The pressure released thus helps dislodge the stuck food. Though this was never proven scientifically, it was more of a theoretical explanation.

Sometimes the food loosens on its own but when it doesn’t, patients need to visit hospitals for an endoscopy, as per Bredenoord. In this procedure, a camera is inserted through the mouth into the oesophagus and the food is removed with a net or a forceps.

How new study tried to dispel cola myth

To test the efficacy of cola, Bredenoord with his team investigated five Dutch hospitals. Of the 51 participants in the study, half were given sips of cola, while the other half just waited for endoscopy.

The results indicated that cola was of no help. For patients who received cola as well as those who waited for endoscopy, there was an improvement in 61 per cent of them. There were no side effects or complications from cola use, but also no significant improvement.

The team suggested it is better to drink a few sips of water to ease the pain while waiting for a medical procedure, instead of using cola.

The old 'cola trick' might not help remove food stuck in throat, suggests new study

A new study suggests a looming effect of extreme freezing temperatures in the north - Frostquakes. Also known as cryoseism or ice quake, these frostquakes are a result of climate change that contributes to fluctuating weather patterns.

Frostquakes are usually caused by heavy precipitation and cold waves, but in the new study, researchers identified the role of wetlands in the origin of these unique seismic events.

In the past, frostquakes have occurred usually due to the freezing of water in the ground. They are most common during extreme winter conditions, when wet, snow-free ground freezes rapidly. Frostquakes were reported in northern Finland in 2016, 2019 and 2022. Similar events were reported in Chicago (2019) and Ottawa (2022) as well.

As per researchers, earlier only roads and areas cleared of snow in winter were particularly prone to frostquakes, but now the study shows that drainage channels and wetlands are also vulnerable to similar activity.

"We found that during the winter of 2022–2023, the main sources of frostquakes in Oulu, Finland were swamps, wetlands and areas with high water tables or other places where water accumulates," says Elena Kozlovskaya, Professor of applied geophysics at the University of Oulu Mining School.

Study shows wetlands are also prone to frostquakes

The study was published by researchers from the University of Oulu, Finland and the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK). It showed that fracturing in the uppermost frozen ground can be initiated if the thickness of the frozen layer is about 5 cm or larger.

Ruptures can further worsen the situation by propagating deeper and damaging infrastructure such as buildings, basements, pipelines and roads.

"Frostquakes affect northern regions internationally, but they have been little studied using seismic instrumentation," says Kari Moisio, a senior researcher at the University of Oulu.

As in winter, snow protects the ground from the cold, but when it melts away with the changing temperatures, the ground is exposed to frost.

In winter 2022-23, two seismic station networks installed in northern Finland showed that on days when the air temperature was decreasing rapidly, the locals reported ground tremors and unusual sounds to the researchers.

The conditions for a frostquake are favourable when the temperature drops to more than -20°C at a rate of about one degree per hour.

Notably, there were many wetlands present near the seismic stations in Oulu near the residential area where the main sources of frostquakes were detected.

Based on the data received from this study, researchers aim to create a system that could predict frostquakes based on soil analysis and satellite data.

Ice quakes, or frostquakes, threaten northern regions of earth. What are they?

Good news for meteor enthusiasts. Celestial delight is on the way! If you missed the glimpse of meteor showers this year, there is still a good chance to catch the sight of these majestic lights. Planet Earth will enter a stream of debris left around the sun by a near-Earth comet, which will trigger a new meteor shower this week.

As per scientists at the Observatoire de Paris, the Comet 46P/Wirtanen, which orbits the Sun every 5.4 years, could spark a meteor shower on Tuesday as its debris enters and burns up in the Earth’s atmosphere.

“The results show a possible encounter forecast for 12 December 2023, between 8:00 and 12:30 UT [0300 and 0730 EST]. The activity level of the shower is highly uncertain due to the absence of reported past showers,” they wrote in a yet-to-be peer-reviewed study posted in arXiv.

How to watch meteor showers this week?

As per scientists, the best view of a meteor shower this week can be captured from Eastern Australia, New Zealand and Oceania. They can be witnessed on Dec 12 between 8:00 and 12:30 UT while the exact time may vary a few hours.

Scientists say the meteor shower observation would be of “tremendous scientific interest” as it can put constraints on the distribution of large particles for the comet.

Meteor showers

Meteor showers are created when Earth passes through clouds of debris left behind by comets as they move close to the sun. As radiation from our star heats them, solid material within the comet turns straight into gas through a process called sublimation.

As the gas erupts from the outer icy shell and escapes the comet, it blows debris free that forms the distinctive tails called “comas”, of these icy cosmic bodies.

Meteors showers are named after objects in the sky from where the most intense bombardment seems to come. Thus, the Perseid meteor shower originates from debris left by the comet Swift-Tuttle that appears to stream to Earth from the constellation Perseus.

Human Rights Day 2023: All You Need to Know

Dec 10 is observed as Human Rights Day around the world. It focuses on the fundamental rights and liberties of people across the globe and advocates for the rights that transcend nationality, gender, race, religion, sexuality and ethnicity.

On 10 Dec 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted and proclaimed this day as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The landmark document enshrines the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being, and is available in more than 500 languages.

Human Rights Day addresses crucial issues such as discrimination, diversity, education, freedom, poverty, and equality over the last decade. Besides, it is traditionally on 10 December that the five-yearly United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights and Nobel Peace Prize is awarded.

This year's theme for Human Rights Day was 'Freedom, Equality and Justice for All'. Notably, this year, the day also marked its 75th anniversary, since its inception in 1948.

To preserve and protect human rights in a diverse country like India, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) was established on October 12, 1993. The provision is contained in the Protection of Human Rights Act (PHRA).

This year's Nobel Peace Prize was conferred to imprisoned Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi "for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all". The award was received by her children on her behalf on Dec 10.

The I-T raids were at the premises of Boudh Distilleries Private Limited across Odisha, Jharkhand and West Bengal. During this, Sahu’s old tweet on corruption in India went viral, leaving netizens into fits.

"I feel pained seeing so much corruption and black money in the country even after the note ban. This is beyond my understanding how people can accumulate so much of black money. Only Congress can uproot corruption from the country," Dhiraj Prasad Sahu tweeted in 2022.

As per the staff of SBI Bank, who were counting cash at Sahu’s premises, 176 bags of cash amounting to over Rs 350 crore (approximately 40 million dollars) were recovered. It took 40 machines to count all the cash.

The counting involved nine teams of about 80 people from the tax department and various banks and they worked 24X7 in shifts. After 10 cash-stuffed almirahs were found, another team of 200 officials, including security personnel, drivers and other staff, joined in.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh on Saturday said the party "is in no way connected with the businesses" of MP Sahu. "Only he can explain, and should explain, how huge amounts of cash have been reportedly unearthed by the income-tax authorities from his properties," added Jairam Ramesh.
