Dec 10 is observed as Human Rights Day around the world. It focuses on the fundamental rights and liberties of people across the globe and advocates for the rights that transcend nationality, gender, race, religion, sexuality and ethnicity.
On 10 Dec 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted and proclaimed this day as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The landmark document enshrines the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being, and is available in more than 500 languages.
Human Rights Day addresses crucial issues such as discrimination, diversity, education, freedom, poverty, and equality over the last decade. Besides, it is traditionally on 10 December that the five-yearly United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights and Nobel Peace Prize is awarded.
This year's theme for Human Rights Day was 'Freedom, Equality and Justice for All'. Notably, this year, the day also marked its 75th anniversary, since its inception in 1948.
To preserve and protect human rights in a diverse country like India, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) was established on October 12, 1993. The provision is contained in the Protection of Human Rights Act (PHRA).
This year's Nobel Peace Prize was conferred to imprisoned Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi "for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all". The award was received by her children on her behalf on Dec 10.
