Scientists have warned that a devastating solar superflare is overdue on Earth, which can be more powerful than billions of atomic bombs when it hits the planet.

The most accurate study done so far has explained that these superflares can wipe out satellites and power grids.

As per the researchers, these disastrous events happen to occur once every 100 years and not once every 1,000 to 10,000 as was believed earlier.

The study has hinted that Earth is likely to be hit by a solar flare which will release at least one octillion joules of energy.

This can be 100 times stronger than the 1859 Carrington Event in which the telegraph network collapsed and the sheets of paper lying in offices were also ignited.

If Earth is hit by such a powerful event, it can be more devastating because of the world's increased dependence on satellite communication networks.

The superflare would impact in such a way that the power grids would be overloaded, satellites would be knocked out of orbit, global communication networks would be silenced and aircraft would be grounded around the world.

The Max Planck Institute's co-author Dr Natalie Krivova said, "The new data are a stark reminder that even the most extreme solar events are part of the sun's natural repertoire."

Director of the MPI and co-author of the study Dr Sami Solanki said, "We cannot observe the sun over thousands of years. Instead, however, we can monitor the behaviour of thousands of stars very similar to the sun over short periods of time."

The data was recorded by scientists from 56,450 Earth-like stars which were observed by NASA's Kepler telescope between 2009 and 2014.

In the observation, the researchers saw 2,889 superflares on 2,527 observed stars and concluded that a superflare occurs roughly once every century.

MPS first author Dr Valeriy Vasilyev said, "We were very surprised that sun-like stars are prone to such frequent superflares."&nbsp;

"It's exciting to see A23a on the move again after periods of being stuck," said Dr Andrew Meijers, who is an oceanographer with the BAS.

"We are interested to see if it will take the same route the other large icebergs that have calved off Antarctica have taken.&nbsp;And more importantly what impact this will have on the local ecosystem," he added.

<h2>Giant iceberg's journey so far</h2>

Originally, the iceberg had calved from the Filchner Ice Shelf in Antarctica in 1986.

The iceberg remained grounded in the Weddell Sea and started its slow journey north in 2020.

The iceberg got trapped in a Taylor Column in February this year. Taylor Column is a phenomenon in which the object in place gets trapped in rotating water above a seamount.

Because of this A23a kept spinning on the spot and its expected rapid drift north was delayed.

The images which were captured by satellites overhead have now confirmed that the iceberg has been freed and is moving.

Now, BAS experts are expecting that it will continue its journey towards the Southern Ocean after the Antarctic Circumpolar Current.

With the help of drilling machines, the officials dug a parallel pit for reaching to the level where the child had fallen.

According to the NDRF personnel, who were carrying out the operation, various challenges were coming up in the operation which included the water level which they had estimated to be nearly 160 feet.&nbsp;

They said that they were even facing trouble in capturing the movements of the boy on camera because of steam underground.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Relief (SDRF) personnel were working together to rescue Aryan.&nbsp;

They were constantly supplying oxygen to the boy through a pipe. The rescue teams also were watching the movements of the boy through the camera which was inserted into the borewell.&nbsp;

The XCMG 180 piling rig machine was also used on Tuesday (Dec 10) for digging a 150-foot deep tunnel close to the borewell to rescue the child.

"The challenge is that we can go up to 150 feet and not beyond that. NDRF rescuers will go down with protective equipment to rescue the child," said NDRF commandant Yogesh Kumar when the operation was going on.

Kumar added that a huge crowd had gathered to see the rescue operation as the team&nbsp;tried to rescue the minor at the earliest.&nbsp;

When the digging proved futile, a rope was tied around the child in the borewell to pull him out.&nbsp;

Meta announced that they are “99 per cent of the way there” in solving a blackout they were facing because of which people were not able to access&nbsp;Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp.

Monitoring website Downdetector at around 10 pm GMT on Wednesday (Dec 11) said that 23,445 reports emerged regarding Facebook outages, 11,466 for Instagram outages and 18,646 complaints for&nbsp;WhatsApp&nbsp;came from Britain. However, all three social media platforms remained largely unaffected in the United States.

Meta issued an update on the situation on microblogging site&nbsp;X and said that the problem has been almost resolved.&nbsp;

“Thanks for bearing with us! We’re 99% of the way there – just doing some last checks. We apologise to those who’ve been affected by the outage," said a spokesperson.

The global outages were not as severe as the 2021 outage on Facebook when the company had deleted its own address by making a configuration error in a protocol. Even though the error was noticed immediately, it took them several hours to fix the problem.

After the services were restored, WhatsApp wrote on X, "And we're back, happy chatting!" Meanwhile, Instagram said, "Andddd we're back - sorry for the wait, and thanks for bearing with us."&nbsp;

Popular AI-powered chatbot ChatGPT also went offline because of a technical issue and left users across the world struggling to access the service.&nbsp;

FBI Director&nbsp;Christopher&nbsp;Wray&nbsp;announced on Wednesday (Dec 11) that he will resign in January before President-elect Donald Trump takes office.

"After weeks of careful thought, I've decided the right thing for the bureau&nbsp;is for me to serve until the end of the current administration in January and then step down,"&nbsp;Wray&nbsp;told bureau employees in remarks released by the FBI.

Trump, who is to be sworn in as president on January 20, has announced the nomination of staunch loyalist Kash Patel to replace&nbsp;Wray&nbsp;as the head of the top US law enforcement agency and he welcomed the FBI chief's resignation.

Wray&nbsp;was named by Trump in 2017 to head the 38,000-strong Federal Bureau of Intelligence but the incoming president has since soured on his choice.

Wray&nbsp;had three more years remaining in his 10-year term as FBI director but faced potentially being fired by Trump.

"The resignation of&nbsp;Christopher&nbsp;Wray&nbsp;is a great day for America as it will end the Weaponisation of what has become known as the United States Department of Injustice," Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

The bus conductor also left from the rear side door. The electric bus, which went out of control, was operated by the civic-run Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST).

The bus rammed into vehicles and passengers on the SG Barve Marg in Kurla (West) at around 9.30 pm on Monday (Dec 9).

Apart from killing seven people and injuring 42 others, the accident also damaged 22 vehicles.

Police arrested the bus driver for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and he will be kept in remand custody till December 21.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, three other passengers - who were two men and one woman - and the driver suffered serious injuries and were taken to the hospital. As of now, two male passengers have been admitted to the hospital, however, their injuries are not life-threatening. The two male passengers remain in hospital with serious injuries which have been described as not life-threatening," they added. "Officers remain keen to speak to anyone who may have been travelling along the A6 on Tuesday morning and witnessed the collision. They would also like people to check whether they have captured any footage on dash cam equipment," the Leicestershire Police further said. Court grants bail to accused in road accident case The police arrested a 27-year-old man in the incident on suspicion of driving dangerously and causing death. However, he was released on bail.
