Bangladesh caretaker government will hold general elections in late 2025 or early 2026, interim leader Muhammad Yunus announced on Monday (Dec 16).

Yunus, who heads the caretaker government, has been facing a lot of pressure to appoint the "chief advisor" for the country after former prime minister Sheikh Hasina was toppled in a student-led uprising in August.

The 84-year-old leader has been heading a temporary administration, formed to tackle what he termed an "extremely tough" challenge to restoring democratic institutions in the South Asian nation.

Yunus was speaking in a televised address to mark Victory Day, the defeat of Pakistan in a war with India that led to the creation of Bangladesh in 1971.

“If political consensus dictates that we have to, and I repeat, ‘have to,’ complete the election with minimal reforms and an accurate voter list, it may be possible to hold the election by the end of 2025,”&nbsp;he said, as translated by Bloomberg news agency. Yunus spoke in Bangla language.

"Election dates could be fixed by the end of 2025 or the first half of 2026," said Yunus.

<h2>Yunus launches commission to carry out reforms</h2>

Various commissions have been launched by Yunus to oversee the reforms and decide on an election date.

"Throughout, I have emphasised that reforms should take place first before the arrangements for an election. If the political parties agree to hold the election on an earlier date with minimum reforms, such as having a flawless voter list, the election could be held by the end of November," he said.

Yunus added that the elections will be delayed by a few months if the full list of electoral reforms is included.

“The task is more challenging this time because voters did not participate in the last three elections, and the voter list has not been verified for over 15 years," said Yunus, as reported by The Daily Star.

According to Yunus, the key reforms needed are an updated voter list which is a "complex" challenge that will require stripping of false names from lists.

Yunus said he dreamt of "ensuring 100 per cent voter turnout" in the elections.

"If this can be achieved, no government will ever dare to strip citizens of their voting rights again," he stated.

Awami League leader Sheikh Hasina was ousted from the country.

The&nbsp;77-year-old had to flee by helicopter to neighbouring India after protesters, who were demanding the abolishment of quotas in civil service jobs, barged into the prime minister's palace.

The last general elections were held in Bangladesh in January in which Hasina had emerged victorious amid allegations of polls not being fair.

The military sites located in the coastal Tartus region were targeted by what was one of "the heaviest strikes" in the Syrian area in more than a decade, said Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Tartus has been one of the two military bases of Russia in Syria and was earlier used as a naval base and an ammunition depot.

The huge explosion, along with the secondary explosions, indicated that a large volume of stored armaments was present in the area.

Earlier, Russia's foreign ministry said that it had evacuated some of the diplomatic staff from Syria, a week after the nation's dictator Bashar al-Assad fled the country.

As per researcher Richard Cordaro, a magnetometer station which is 820km away in Isnik, Turkey also detected the blast.

He said the signal travelled nearly 'twice as fast' as that of a normal earthquake.

In 1971, the Soviet Union was the one to first establish a naval military base in Tartus.

The facility had been classed as a "Material-Technical Support Point" till 2017 and not as a base, and is the only entrance point to the Mediterranean for Russia.

The centre was used for carrying out the supply and delivery of armaments after Russia participated in the Syrian civil war in 2015.

A Kremlin spokesperson said on Wednesday (Dec 11) that Moscow has been in touch with the new authorities in Syria and discussing the future of their bases.

A Chinese finance firm has gone viral on Chinese social media for its toxic workplace rituals after a video showed its employees lying flat on the floor of the office to welcome the boss of the company, reported South China Morning Post.
In the video, around 20 employees at an institute, located in the southern city of Guangzhou, were seen lying on the floor of the corridor with their faces downwards and chanting slogans to welcome their boss in an inspection.
The employees looked up and shouted, “Qiming branch welcomes Boss Huang! Qiming branch, whether in life or death, we will not fail our work mission.”
The legal representative of the company, Liu, on December 2, refuted the incident and emphasised that Huang never took part in a welcoming ceremony.

Government officials in the Sambhal district of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Friday (Dec 13) reopened an ancient temple which was closed since the communal riots in 1978.
The government authorities had "stumbled" upon the Hindu temple during an anti-encroachment drive in Sambhal close to the Shahi Jama Masjid, reported news agency PTI. Inside the temple, the authorities found a Shivling and a Hanuman idol.
As per the locals, the Bhasma Shankar temple had existed since 1978 after communal riots led to the local Hindu community's displacement.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Vandana Misra, who was heading the campaign against electricity theft in the area, said that the officials stumbled upon the temple while carrying out an inspection in the region.

<h2>Priests perform aarti at Bhasma Shankar temple after 46 years</h2>
On the morning of Sunday (Dec 15), priests performed morning pooja and aarti at the temple. The personnel of Uttar Pradesh Police were deployed outside the temple. 
The priests had cleaned the temple premises and also made arrangements for electricity.
Acharya Brahm Shukla, who performed the aarti at the temple, said to ANI, "We came in the morning and cleaned the temple to perform the aarti. A Brahmin should be appointed here so that he can stay here. Till the time caretaker (for this temple) is appointed, we will take responsibility."

The officials said that CCTV cameras were also installed for security purposes.
Sambhal Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Vandana Misra said that the anti-encroachment drive was carried out for structures built on public property and added that the officials will restore the temple to its original structure.
"We have written to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI)...Police will be deployed near the temple," she said.
District Magistrate (DM) Rajendra Pensiya said that the ancient well close to the site will also be opened.
"The (ancient Lord Shiva) temple is being cleaned. A ramp had been built over the ancient well. When we dismantled the ramp, the well was revealed," said DM Pensiya.
On November 24, Sambhal got embroiled in violence after tensions erupted over the survey of Mughal-era Shahi Jama Masjid on orders of the court.

Ancient Hindu temple, closed since 1978 riots, reopens in India's Sambhal

Scientists have warned that a devastating solar superflare is overdue on Earth, which can be more powerful than billions of atomic bombs when it hits the planet.
The most accurate study done so far has explained that these superflares can wipe out satellites and power grids.
As per the researchers, these disastrous events happen to occur once every 100 years and not once every 1,000 to 10,000 as was believed earlier.
The study has hinted that Earth is likely to be hit by a solar flare which will release at least one octillion joules of energy.

If Earth is hit by such a powerful event, it can be more devastating because of the world's increased dependence on satellite communication networks.
The superflare would impact in such a way that the power grids would be overloaded, satellites would be knocked out of orbit, global communication networks would be silenced and aircraft would be grounded around the world.
The Max Planck Institute's co-author Dr Natalie Krivova said, "The new data are a stark reminder that even the most extreme solar events are part of the sun's natural repertoire."
<h2>Scientists predict how often superflares occur</h2>
Since modern observation records of the radiation of the sun have been available since the space age began, it has been difficult to predict how often these superflares occur.
An international team of researchers, headed by the Max Planck Institute (MPI), are trying to find answers in the stars.

New Delhi, India Scientists have warned that a devastating solar superflare is overdue on Earth, which can be more powerful than billions of atomic bombs when it hits the planet. The most accurate study done so far has explained that these superflares can wipe out satellites and power grids. As per the researchers, these disastrous events happen to occur once every 100 years and not once every 1,000 to 10,000 as was believed earlier. The study has hinted that Earth is likely to be hit by a solar flare which will release at least one octillion joules of energy. If Earth is hit by such a powerful event, it can be more devastating because of the world's increased dependence on satellite communication networks. The superflare would impact in such a way that the power grids would be overloaded, satellites would be knocked out of orbit, global communication networks would be silenced and aircraft would be grounded around the world. The Max Planck Institute's co-author Dr Natalie Krivova said, "The new data are a stark reminder that even the most extreme solar events are part of the sun's natural repertoire." The biggest iceberg in the world, A23a, has started to drift in the Southern Ocean after breaking free. The iceberg weighs almost a trillion tonnes and is double the size of Greater London. 
For more than 30 years, the iceberg has remained grounded on the seafloor and recently was seen spinning on the spot. 
According to the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) experts, A23a has broken free from its position which was in the north of the South Orkney Islands. 
The iceberg has embarked on a new journey and is floating in the Southern Ocean.

"It's exciting to see A23a on the move again after periods of being stuck," said Dr Andrew Meijers, who is an oceanographer with the BAS.
"We are interested to see if it will take the same route the other large icebergs that have calved off Antarctica have taken. And more importantly what impact this will have on the local ecosystem," he added.
<h2>Giant iceberg's journey so far</h2>
Originally, the iceberg had calved from the Filchner Ice Shelf in Antarctica in 1986.
The iceberg remained grounded in the Weddell Sea and started its slow journey north in 2020.
The iceberg got trapped in a Taylor Column in February this year. Taylor Column is a phenomenon in which the object in place gets trapped in rotating water above a seamount.
Because of this A23a kept spinning on the spot and its expected rapid drift north was delayed.
The images which were captured by satellites overhead have now confirmed that the iceberg has been freed and is moving.
Now, BAS experts are expecting that it will continue its journey towards the Southern Ocean after the Antarctic Circumpolar Current.

Biogeochemist on board the vessel Laura Taylor hoped that the impact of the iceberg on ecosystems would be studied by scientists.
"We know that these giant icebergs can provide nutrients to the waters they pass through, creating thriving ecosystems in otherwise less productive areas," Taylor said.
"What we don’t know is what difference particular icebergs, their scale, and their origins can make to that process. We took samples of ocean surface waters behind, immediately adjacent to, and ahead of the iceberg’s route. They should help us determine what life could form around A23a and how it impacts carbon in the ocean and its balance with the atmosphere," she added.

ABC News reached a legal settlement with United States President-elect Donald Trump in a defamation lawsuit and agreed to pay $15 million as part of it which also ended the dispute around an interview in which anchor George Stephanopoulos was accused of defaming Trump.
The money paid out by ABC News will be transferred to a "Presidential foundation and museum to be established by or for Plaintiff, as Presidents of the United States of America have established in the past", as per the settlement terms released on Saturday (Dec 14).
Another $1 million will be paid out by the defendants - identified as ABC, ABC News and Stephanopoulos - to the president-elect's counsel.

“I don’t discount others who may have seen actual drone activity, and not all I saw is fully explained by flight paths, but much of it was. We have a lot of distrust in politics/government right now, and we need the federal gov to respect the right of the public to be informed,” the senator said.

<h2>Sherrif sends his own drone behind mysterious objects</h2>

Meanwhile, a New Jersey sheriff got fed up with the multiple sightings and decided to send its own drone to track the objects in the sky.&nbsp;

However, the mysterious flying objects easily bypassed the drone and the efforts were wasted.

Ocean County detective Anthony D’Amico said, “Realistically, once we find out where they’re coming from or where they’re going, we’ll have a better idea of who’s doing it."

“I couldn’t even begin to tell you what that was. It’s harder to tell because it’s all thermal. So it’s not like I can look up and clearly make out what it is," he added.

“While I didn’t observe a plane in the flight tracker at that moment that night, I was able to pull up more detailed flight data subsequently and spotted this one small plane taking the path of what was pointed out to me the other night as possible drone flying near us,” he added.
However, Kim failed to figure out the phenomenon which led to multiple such mysterious sightings in the sky.
“I don’t discount others who may have seen actual drone activity, and not all I saw is fully explained by flight paths, but much of it was. We have a lot of distrust in politics/government right now, and we need the federal gov to respect the right of the public to be informed,” the senator said.

A Chinese finance firm has gone viral on Chinese social media for its toxic workplace rituals after a video showed its employees lying flat on the floor of the office to welcome the boss of the company, reported South China Morning Post.

In the video, around 20 employees at an institute, located in the southern city of Guangzhou, were seen lying on the floor of the corridor with their faces downwards and chanting slogans to welcome their boss in an inspection.

The employees looked up and shouted, “Qiming branch welcomes Boss Huang! Qiming branch, whether in life or death, we will not fail our work mission.”

The legal representative of the company, Liu, on December 2, refuted the incident and emphasised that Huang never took part in a welcoming ceremony.
