ChatGPT, a very popularised chatbot created by OpenAI, was used by a professor at the University of Victoria in Canada to write a reference letter which a student needed to get a scholarship. The decision paid off well as the student was able to get the scholarship, reported The Atlantic.

Matt Huculak, who is the head of advanced research services at the libraries of the university, directed ChatGPT to pen down an "excellent" reference letter for a student who was then selected for a graduate programme at one of the "top-three" schools in Canada.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates recently stated that artificial intelligence (AI) may be able to even teach children how to 'read and write' in the coming 18 months. The prediction was made by Gates at a time when AI apps sparked a debate about whether the technology holds the capacity to outperform humans in different domains.

The debate has led to several tests which were conducted so that the performance of AI and humans can be compared. One such test was done on the revolutionary and famous chatbot ChatGPT, which has been developed by OpenAI, to assess its ability to crack the toughest competitive exams.

Questions have also been raised about how AI can help students enhance their learning skills. In the wake of these educational debates, Gates spoke positively about how AI can make a massive contribution to teaching children how to write and read.

“If you just took the next 18 months, the AIs will come in as a teacher’s aide and give feedback on writing. And then they will amp up what we’re able to do in math. Our bottleneck in math really is more of how we fit in the overall system and getting that teacher adoption," said Gates in the talk.

He had suggested that for such tutoring services, AI-powered chatbots like ChatGPT Plus may charge, but Gates argued that they will still be more accessible and affordable compared to traditional human tutoring.

New construction was detected in December by the American spy services at a suspected Chinese military facility located in the United Arab Emirates, more than a year after the country announced that the project was being stopped because of concerns raised by the United States, revealed 'The Discord Leaks' according to The Washington Post.

Activities carried out at a port close to Abu Dhabi falls among the list of developments in the UAE which involved the Chinese military. The US intelligence was monitoring this as it was concerned that the UAE, which has been a longtime security partner of the United States, is developing closer ties with China at the expense of Washington's interests, stated the report published in The Washington Post.

The revelations were made in the documents and interviews related to the senior officials in the Biden administration. The US officials were also concerned after Chinese military personnel were seen around other sensitive construction sites.

The efforts made by Beijing in the UAE are part of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army's (PLA) ambitious campaign to build a global military network which includes 10 logistical support sites and five overseas bases by 2030, stated one of the documents which included a map of other facilities planned in Southeast Asia, Middle East and throughout Africa.

The initiative was called by the Chinese military officials as “Project 141,” stated the leaked materials.

“There are some people in the administration who think the UAE has fundamentally decided to work with us. I do not believe that,” a senior administration official was quoted as saying in the report.

The UAE’s leaders “think that China is hugely important right now and rising in the Middle East,” the official added.

“The U.S. runs more than 800 overseas military bases, which has caused concern by many countries around the world. It is in no position to criticize other countries,” he further stated.

The officials of the US insisted that they won't let a Chinese base become operational in the UAE, stating that this kind of facility would jeopardise sensitive activities of the US military activities in the Middle East.

The Chinese Embassy's spokesman in Washington Liu Pengyu said that concerns of the US about the military facilities of China are misplaced. It is in no position to criticize other countries,” he further stated. The officials of the US insisted that they won't let a Chinese base become operational in the UAE, stating that this kind of facility would jeopardise sensitive activities of the US military activities in the Middle East. “UAE is a close partner, and we are regularly engaged with its senior leadership on a number of regional and global matters,” said a second senior administration official. Joe Biden to become first sitting US president to visit Papua New Guinea in a century

Adolf Hitler's fake diaries, which sparked outrage when they were published by a German magazine as real accounts 40 years ago, will be put on public display at the national archives in Berlin.

Germany’s Stern magazine published the counterfeit journals and circulated their editions around the world. The fake diaries will now be given to the state for preservation, said Bertelsmann publishing house, which currently owns them.

Biggest fake news story in Germany's press history

More than 200 journalists and 27 television crews had gathered on April 25, 1983, at the Gruner & Jahr publishing house in Hamburg to witness what Stern magazine was about to present in front of the world. The editors-in-chief of the magazine arrived at the press conference with 12 black notebooks in their hands, which they claimed to include the personal notes of Adolf Hitler.

Stern's reporter Gerd Heidemann posed with the diaries and the clicked photos were published across the world along with the sensational find of the reports.

Three days later, a special edition was published by Stern with excerpts from the diaries. The circulation of the magazine increased by 400,000. "The history of the Third Reich must be rewritten in large parts," Stern editor-in-chief Peter Koch said.

Forged accounts, years of humiliation

After the diaries were submitted for forensic analysis, it was discovered that the accounts were forged and that the paper used in these diaries had no existence in the Third Reich but was developed in the 1950s.

A week after publishing the forged diaries of Hitler, Stern had to make a humiliating admission that was fooled by the seller who coaxed them into buying the diaries for 9.3 million Deutschmarks.

The owner of the Sunday Times, Rupert Murdoch, had been personally involved in the bidding war to secure the rights of the diaries and had flown to Zurich to finalise the deal. Speaking at the 2012 Leveson inquiry, Murdoch later said that he would never live down the error. “It was a massive mistake I made and I will have to live with it for the rest of my life," he said.

President of Germany’s federal archives Michael Hollmann described the diaries as “a shameless attempt to give the brutal crimes of National Socialism a human veneer, which struck a chord in 1980’s society.”

Creator of the forged diaries

A petty criminal, Konrad Kujau, who was earlier creating fake luncheon vouchers had produced the diaries. He had a successful career as a Nazi memorabilia forger who also claimed to have a few paintings created by Hitler. The diaries were written by Kujau between 1981 and 1983, and he had sold them to the West German journalist Gerd Heidemann, who was famous for his obsession with Nazi artefacts.

It so happened that Kujau, who was faking his identity as an antique dealer, was supplying Nazi artefacts which included artworks and manuscripts, that he claimed to have belonged to Hitler, to a businessman Fritz Stiefel.

Stiefel was the man to whom Kujau first showed the forged Hitler diary. The collector compared the diary with other manuscripts of Hitler and declared it genuine.

Stiefel then took the diary to Stern reporter Heidemann, who had a hunch that the diary will become a sensation.

He believed the version narrated to him that Hitler's diaries were recovered from the crash site of a Nazi plane in East Germany.

To further convince himself, Heidemann visited the site and believed that the diaries were actually found there.

He shared the information about Hitler's diary with some of his colleagues at Stern and reached out to Kujau, who knew that the reporter was now hooked to the diaries he was offering.

The counterfeiter was offered 2 million Deutschmarks (about $1.10 million)by Stern for the documents.

FH stands for "Fuhrer Hitler" ?

The journalists got the first three diaries immediately checked. Its authenticity was confirmed by Rhineland-Palatinate State Criminal Police Office, experts from the Federal Archives and renowned historians.

Everyone failed to notice that some of the comparative writing samples which were given to the experts were also written by Kujau.

The experts brushed aside the inconsistencies in the diaries, considering that Hitler was a lazy writer.

They believed that an impulsive and impatient man like Hitler would not be able to write neatly and without mistakes.

They were not even alarmed by the basic oddities like the letters "FH" which were written in old-fashioned typography on the covers of the diaries, which they believed were the initials "Fuhrer Hitler."

Eventually, the diary was published and Kujau and Heidemann served jail sentences for the roles they played in creating and circulating fake diary entries and various newspaper editors were fired over the scandal.

English historian Hugh Trevor-Roper, who was an expert in Nazi history, had his reputation tainted after he called the works to be authentic.

The diaries will now be placed on permanent display in Koblenz, in the western part of Germany, and will be made available to the general public academics in accordance with the law.

President of Germany’s federal archives Michael Hollmann described the diaries as “a shameless attempt to give the brutal crimes of National Socialism a human veneer, which struck a chord in 1980’s society.” WATCH | Adolf Hitler's ancestry in focus, Russia says Hitler had Jewish roots Creator of the forged diaries A petty criminal, Konrad Kujau, who was earlier creating fake luncheon vouchers had produced the diaries. They were not even alarmed by the basic oddities like the letters "FH" which were written in old-fashioned typography on the covers of the diaries, which they believed were the initials "Fuhrer Hitler." Eventually, the diary was published and Kujau and Heidemann served jail sentences for the roles they played in creating and circulating fake diary entries and various newspaper editors were fired over the scandal. English historian Hugh Trevor-Roper, who was an expert in Nazi history, had his reputation tainted after he called the works to be authentic. The diaries will now be placed on permanent display in Koblenz, in the western part of Germany, and will be made available to the general public academics in accordance with the law.
Migratory birds, frozen by the cold snap hitting America's Midwest, have suddenly started dropping from the sky and are lying helplessly in ponds, fields and cow pastures. A rescue operation is underway to save the lives of these falling loons.

The alarm of a “Loon Fallout” was raised by the Raptor Education Group in Wisconsin to make people aware of the plight of falling birds.

The Raptor Education Group stated that they have been receiving calls for two days about stranded loons which need to be rescued because they can't walk after the freezing cold weather conditions led to the occurrence of the phenomena.

"A few loons can be a normal situation of a loon accidentally landing as a mistake," said the nonprofit in a Facebook post.

However, because of the huge number of calls made to the group as well as the winter conditions prevailing in the region, they said it appeared that a "loon fallout" is occurring.

"That occurs when atmospheric conditions are such that the migrating loons develop ice on their body as they fly at high altitude and crash-land when they are no longer able to fly due to the weight of the ice on their body or the interference with their flight ability," the group said, which helps in the rehabilitation and care of wild birds.

Presently, the loons have been rescued from Wausau, Gleason, Stratford, Neva, Rice Lake, Antigo and Drummond, said the REGI staff.

'Loons cannot walk'

The founder and director of the group, Marge Gibson, said that the event has been different from the other incidents which have occurred in the past.

"One reason is that of more public involvement … that made it possible for loons to be found, that in past events may not have been," she stated.

Gibson, after evaluation, said that some of the loons will be sent into large open lakes so that they can continue migrating.

"Loons cannot walk! They will need your help," the group stated in its Facebook post. "If you find a loon on land or on a road or cow pasture, realize that it cannot walk," it added.

As per REGI, the legs of the loon are placed at the bird's back and made for diving and swimming and not walking. The birds cannot fly from small ponds as a quarter mile or more open water is needed by the bird to run across and fly.
