Norway criticised Sweden for not notifying the country before launching its research rockets after one of them malfunctioned and landed in the territory of its neighbouring country.

Sweden launched the rocket on Monday at 07:20 local time (05:20 GMT) from the Esrange Space Centre, before it fell into a Norwegian mountain range.

The centre's owner Swedish Space Corporation (SSC), which has also been running it, issued an apology and said that it is investigating the case.

However, Sweden still faced criticism from Norway for not formally notifying the nation regarding the launch.

As per the SSC, the rocket initially touched an altitude of 250km (155 miles) and then fell into zero gravity, where experiments were being conducted by them.

The rocket then made a landing 40km northwest of the landing site in Malselv municipality which is located in the north of Norway, around 10km from the closest inhabited area.

“It landed in the mountains at 1,000 metres altitude, and 10km from the closest settlement,” said Philip Ohlsson, head of communications at SSC.

"This is a deviation that we take seriously," stated Marko Kohberg from the Esrange Space Centre.

Netflix plans to invest $2.5 billion in South Korea's entertainment content in the span of the next four years, announced Ted Sarandos, the CEO of the streaming giant, after holding a meeting with the country's President Yoon Suk Yeol in Washington. In recent years, South Korea has elevated its status as a global cultural powerhouse, especially because of the explosive success achieved by the blockbuster Netflix series "Squid Game" and the Oscar-winning film "Parasite". "Netflix is delighted to confirm that we will invest USD 2.5 billion in Korea including the creation of Korean series, films, and unscripted shows over the next four years," said Sarandos, in a statement, on Tuesday. "This investment plan is twice the total amount Netflix has invested in the Korean market since we started our service in Korea in 2016," he added. "It is incredible that the love towards Korean shows has led to a wider interest in Korea, thanks to the Korean creators' compelling stories. Their stories are now at the heart of the global cultural zeitgeist," he stated. In the last few years, the entertainment industry of South Korea took the world by storm as more than 60 per cent of viewers were recorded watching South Korean dramas on Netflix, stated the company data. Netflix, which invested more than 1 trillion won ($750 million) in producing Korean content from 2015 to 2021, had earlier stated that it will increase its South Korean drama output. Yoon, who reached Washington Monday for a six-day state visit, hailed the meeting held with Sarandos calling it "very meaningful". WATCH | Netflix airs banned 'powerpuff girls' episode Yoon stated that the new investment "will be a great opportunity for the Korean content industry, creators, and Netflix. We sincerely welcome Netflix's exceptional investment decision". Yoon will be holding talks with US President Joe Biden Wednesday in the wake of the allies increasing their military cooperation amid North Korea's expanding nuclear threats. A number of sanctions-defying launches were conducted by Pyongyang this year, which included test-firing the first solid-fuel ballistic missile of North Korea, which is considered an important technical breakthrough for its military. Responding to the events, Yoon pulled South Korea closer to Washington, which is a long-standing ally. (With inputs from agencies) You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community.
North Dakota's Republican governor Doug Burgum on Monday signed legislation which banned abortion throughout the pregnancy period, including a slight exception of a period of six weeks of gestation. With the signing of the legislation, North Dakota adopted on Monday one of the strictest anti-abortion laws present in the country.

In the gestation period of six weeks, the women will be allowed to carry out the abortion in cases of incest, rape or medical emergency, like ectopic pregnancy.

“This bill clarifies and refines existing state law ... and reaffirms North Dakota as a pro-life state,” said Burgum, in a statement.

The ruling of the US Supreme Court last year overturned the 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision which had legalised abortion country-wide. The ruling also led to various states adopting laws which restrict or ban the procedure. Many rulings had to face legal challenges. Currently, abortion at any stage of pregnancy is banned in almost 13 states and has been kept on hold in other states due to court injunctions.

On the other hand, a network for strengthening access to abortion was launched by the Democratic governors in around 20 states this year in the wake of the decision taken by the US Supreme Court that eliminated the constitutional right of women to end a pregnancy. The apex court had given state governments the regulatory powers to pass legislations on abortion to state governments.

The law adopted by North Dakota will come into effect immediately, however, the state Supreme Court ruled against a previous ban last month which will remain blocked till the lawsuit over its constitutionality is in process.

India: Bengaluru to mark 'Zero Shadow Day'. Know what it means

A new threat to life on the planet Earth has been identified by astronomers that may reach from deep space and will be beyond the control of humans.

The Chandra X-ray Observatory as well as other telescopes were used by astronomers to identify the phase when the X-rays which are generated by the explosion of stars can actually affect life on planets which are 100 light-years away, including Earth. According to a new study, exploded stars have become more dangerous for the planets compared to the threat they carried with them before.

The scientists identified the threat in the blast wave which is generated from the explosion of stars that produce the X-rays in large amounts which reaches planets like Earth in months or years after the explosion occurs and are likely to last for decades.

"Such intense exposure may trigger an extinction event on the planet," said the astronomers in a press release.

“If a torrent of X-rays sweeps over a nearby planet, the radiation would severely alter the planet's atmospheric chemistry. For an Earth-like planet, this process could wipe out a significant portion of ozone, which ultimately protects life from the dangerous ultraviolet radiation of its host star,” said Ian Brunton of the University of Illinois, in a statement. Brunton led the study that culminated with the detection of a new threat which may lead to the extinction of humans from Earth.

Around 31 supernovae and their aftermath in deep space were observed by astronomers to reveal that lethal doses of radiation will reach the planet which is located around 160 light-years away. The telescopes on supernova 1979C, SN 1987A, SN 2010jl, and SN 1994I were targeted by the team.

Researchers stated that after years of exposure to lethal X-rays from the supernova's explosion and ultraviolet radiation's impact from a planet’s host star, a huge amount of nitrogen dioxide is produced which leads to brown haze in the atmosphere.
