<p>United States 2024 presidential hopeful and rightwing Florida governor Ron DeSantis faced wide condemnation after he stated that if he gets elected to the White House, he will “start slitting throats” in the country's federal bureaucracy from the first day he comes in power.<br />

<p>Russian-appointed officials in Crimea said that explosions were heard near the bridge which links the Russian mainland to the annexed region early on Saturday (August 5), stating that the blasts were related to a Ukrainian drone attack carried out on a Russian tanker.<br />

Explosions in Crimea, Russian tanker hit in Ukrainian drone attack, claim officials

<p>In what is being seen as insensitive comments, President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday (August 3) that France is facing an “immense” challenge most of the youngers who were prosecuted over riots this summer were either in social care or had single-parent families.</p>

<p>The violence erupted in the month of June after 17-year-old Nahel Merzouk was shot dead by a traffic police officer in a car in the Paris suburb of Nanterre.</p>

<p>Macron, in an interview with Le Figaro’s weekly magazine, said the figure reflected a decline of trust among youth in schoolteachers, parents and also in democratic institutions. It also underlined a breakdown of authority.</p>

<p>The comments made by Macron were an attempt to flesh out Elysée’s view which hold the failure of parental guidance as the reason for the worst urban violence in France for 18 years.</p>

<p>Macron stated that the episode emphasised a “crisis of civilisation” and the “deregulation” of Western societies. He further refuted the populist right’s claims that the riots were a result of immigration, mainly from France’s former African colonies.</p>

<p>In the wake of the police killing, protesters set ablaze or vandalised 12,031 cars and 2,508 buildings, which included 258 police stations and 243 schools, and about 800 officers were injured.</p>

<p>“Almost 75 per cent of the minors [sent for trial] were either in social care or from single-parent families. This is an immense challenge because [the child rioters] are the society of tomorrow,” said Macron.</p>

<p>He stated that the government authorities should take more steps to help single parents in educating their children. “We must accompany these families, give far more means, prepare them better, and at the same time make them more responsible,” he added.</p>

<p>He stated that the parents of children who had committed offences need to be punished but stopped short of supporting right-wing calls for stopping the welfare benefits of such people. This move would only “make the problem worse”, he stated.</p>

<p>The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) resumed the Gyanvapi mosque complex’s scientific survey in the north Indian city of Varanasi to determine if the mosque was actually constructed over a temple.</p>

<p>On Friday (August 4) morning, a team of ASI officials reached inside the premises of the 17th-century mosque and started the scientific survey to find whether any structure of a Hindu temple existed in the same place.</p>

<p>The survey started amid tight security arrangements on the Godaulia-Maidagin route, one day after Allahabad High Court gave its nod to the ASI to conduct the survey.</p>

<p>"All people (including ASI officials) have reached there. The survey has started. We are also going inside," said Subhash Nandan Chaturvedi, the advocate representing the Hindu side on the Gyanvapi case.</p>

<p><br type="_moz" />
At the heart of the case is the contention by a group of Hindu petitioners that there is a 'shivling', a holy structure of the religion, in the mosque complex which they want to worship. The Muslim representatives argue that it is a fountain.</p>

<h2><strong>HC says survey in ‘interest of justice’</strong></h2>

<p>On Thursday (August 3), Allahabad High Court gave ASI permission to conduct a survey of the Gyanvapi mosque complex in Varanasi.</p>

<p>"In the opinion of the Court, the scientific survey/investigation proposed is necessary in the interest of justice and shall benefit the plaintiffs and defendants alike and come in aid of the trial court to arrive at a just decision. The (trial) court was justified in passing the impugned order," said the bench, in its 16-page verdict.</p>

<p>The ruling of the high court has been challenged by the mosque committee in the Supreme Court, a request which will be heard later today.</p>

<p>"Allahabad High Court has said that the ASI survey of the Gyanvapi mosque complex will start. Sessions court order is upheld by the High Court," said Vishnu Shankar Jain, representing the Hindu side in the Gyanvapi survey case, while speaking to reporters. &nbsp;</p>

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) resumed the Gyanvapi mosque complex’s scientific survey in the north Indian city of Varanasi to determine if the mosque was actually constructed over a temple.

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) resumed the Gyanvapi mosque complex’s scientific survey in the north Indian city of Varanasi to determine if the mosque was actually constructed over a temple. On Friday (August 4) morning, a team of ASI officials reached inside the premises of the 17th-century mosque and started the scientific survey to find whether any structure of a Hindu temple existed in the same place. The survey started amid tight security arrangements on the Godaulia-Maidagin route, one day after Allahabad High Court gave its nod to the ASI to conduct the survey. "All people (including ASI officials) have reached there. The survey has started. We are also going inside," said Subhash Nandan Chaturvedi, the advocate representing the Hindu side on the Gyanvapi case. At the heart of the case is the contention by a group of Hindu petitioners that there is a 'shivling', a holy structure of the religion, in the mosque complex which they want to worship. The Muslim representatives argue that it is a fountain. ALSO READ | Explained | The Gyanvapi case, history and battle over Places of Worship Act HC says survey in ‘interest of justice’ On Thursday (August 3), Allahabad High Court gave ASI permission to conduct a survey of the Gyanvapi mosque complex in Varanasi. "In the opinion of the Court, the scientific survey/investigation proposed is necessary in the interest of justice and shall benefit the plaintiffs and defendants alike and come in aid of the trial court to arrive at a just decision. The (trial) court was justified in passing the impugned order," said the bench, in its 16-page verdict. Caption: These are the artefacts present in the Gyanvapi premises which were linked to the Hindu temple during the commissioner survey. The ruling of the high court has been challenged by the mosque committee in the Supreme Court, a request which will be heard later today. "Allahabad High Court has said that the ASI survey of the Gyanvapi mosque complex will start. Sessions court order is upheld by the High Court," said Vishnu Shankar Jain, representing the Hindu side in the Gyanvapi survey case, while speaking to reporters. India’s Supreme Court, in its interim order, placed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s conviction on hold in the criminal defamation case over the 'Modi surname' remark on Friday (August 4).

India’s Supreme Court, in its interim order, placed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s conviction on hold in the criminal defamation case over the 'Modi surname' remark on Friday (August 4). In its verdict, the apex court said, “There is no doubt that utterances are not in good taste, person in public life is expected to exercise caution while making public speeches.” The court accepted his affidavit in the contempt petition and observed that Gandhi ought to have been more careful. Supreme Court said that the trial court judge did not give any reason for imposing the maximum sentence on Gandhi and added that the order of conviction needs to be stayed pending final adjudication. Granting relief to the Congress leader, Supreme Court said that the ramifications of the order given by the trial court are wide. “Not only was Gandhi’s right to continue in public life affected but also that of the electorate who elected him,” said the court. #BREAKING Supreme Court stays Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's conviction in the criminal defamation case over the 'Modi surname' remark. Interestingly, everybody who is aggrieved in this very ‘small’ community in 13 crores, only people suing are BJP office-holders,” said senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, as quoted by legal website Live Law. “The judge treats this as a serious offence involving a moral turpitude. This is a non-cognisable, bailable, and compoundable offence. The offence was not against society, not kidnapping, rape, or murder. How can this become an offence involving moral turpitude?” Singhvi quizzed. Replying to the arguments of Singhvi, senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, who appeared for complainant Purnesh Modi, stated that the entire speech was more than 50 minutes long and they have a plethora of clippings of the speech and evidence attached in the Election Commission of India’s record. The Supreme Court stated that it wanted to know why Gandhi was given the maximum sentence. “Had the judge given a sentence of 1 year and 11 months, then he (Rahul Gandhi) would not have been disqualified,” the Supreme Court stated.
