A man was rescued Saturday after being stuck on a partially submerged boat in the Atlantic Ocean for around 35 hours, around 12 miles off Florida's coast.

On Friday (August 4), Charles Gregory left for an early morning fishing trip off the coast of St Augustine, Florida. However, the tide rose quicker than he estimated, as waves slammed his 12-foot jon boat – a flat-bottomed and lightweight vessel – and he was knocked into the water.

After falling into the water, Gregory managed to get back on board. However, he was quickly taken out to sea. The 25-year-old man “struggled to stay alive” for almost two days under Florida's brutal sun as he clinched to his partially submerged boat. During his two-day struggle for survival, the man not only spotted sharks but also suffered jellyfish stings, said his father Raymond Gregory while speaking to CNN on Sunday (August 6).

A new coronavirus variant EG.5.1, nicknamed Eris, has been spreading across the United Kingdom and has brought the country's health officers on their toes.

The variant, which has descended from the rapidly spreading Omicron, was first flagged last month in the United Kingdom, reported news agency PTI.

The variant Eris is found in one of the out of the seven new coronavirus cases, said the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). As per the latest data, the cases of the Eris variant now account for 14.6 per cent of all cases, Sky News reported.

"COVID-19 case rates continued to increase this week compared to our previous report. 5.4% of 4,396 respiratory specimens reported through the Respiratory DataMart System were identified as COVID-19. This is compared to 3.7% of 4,403 from the previous report," said the UKHSA, in a report.

“It was subsequently raised from a signal in monitoring to a variant V-23JUL-01 on July 31, 2023, due to the increasing number of genomes in UK data, and continued growth internationally.
UK is almost ‘flying blind’

In the wake of increasing coronavirus cases, experts have suggested that the UK is almost “flying blind” in the case of Covid this autumn.

Professor of operational research at University College London, Christina Pagel, while speaking to The Guardian, said that it seems like the onset of a new wave of Covid. She added that with the autumn coming on and people going back to school and work, Covid pressures are likely to increase.

“We might see the wave continue to grow, and grow faster, in September,” she stated. Pagel said that the nationwide infection survey, which was published by the Office for National Statistics for autumn and winter, should be brought back.

"And we won't just sue, it will be extremely loud and we will go after the boards of directors of the companies too," Musk stated later while responding to a post about nothing changing behaviour faster than a fear of legal action in the US. Dead body, drugs and pool sex | Couple's Caribbean holiday turns into nightmare

Space agency NASA has been able to establish complete contact with Voyager 2 probe, which was lost a few days back, months before than expected.

The space agency had sent a wrong command to the spacecraft in July which changed its position and severed its contact. It was sent on an exploration of space in 1977.

On Tuesday, a signal was picked up, however, thanks to an "interstellar shout", which is a powerful instruction, its antenna was positioned back facing Earth.

Originally, NASA had pinned hopes on Voyager 2 probe resetting itself in October. The mission controllers took 37 hours to figure out if the interstellar command sent by them had worked since Voyager 2 was almost billions of miles away from Earth.

ALSO READ | One wrong command and NASA's Voyager 2 goes dark in interstellar space

Staff used the "highest-power transmitter" to send signals to the spacecraft and timed it to be sent during "the best conditions" so that the antenna gets positioned as per the command, said Voyager project manager Suzanne Dodd to AFP.

After the probe lost the communications, it was not able to send back data to Nasa's Deep Space Network and receive commands. However, the space agency confirmed on August 4 that the data was received by the spacecraft and it was normally operating.

NASA has said that the spacecraft, which is laden with science instruments, should stay on its planned trajectory in the universe.

Search for Voyager 2

The space agency on Monday (July 31) said that its huge dish in Canberra, the capital of Australia, was making efforts to detect any stray signals from Voyager 2. This happened when NASA was able to hear the first faint "heartbeat" signal.

The area of Voyager 2 was being bombarded by the antenna with the correct command, hoping to establish contact somehow, said NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which looks after the Voyager missions.

The probe has been programmed for resetting its position multiple times every year to ensure that its antenna is pointing at Earth. The next reset will take place on October 15, on which NASA was resting its hopes if all other attempts had failed.

ALSO READ | One wrong command and NASA's Voyager 2 goes dark in interstellar space Staff used the "highest-power transmitter" to send signals to the spacecraft and timed it to be sent during "the best conditions" so that the antenna gets positioned as per the command, said Voyager project manager Suzanne Dodd to AFP. Search for Voyager 2 The space agency on Monday (July 31) said that its huge dish in Canberra, the capital of Australia, was making efforts to detect any stray signals from Voyager 2.
