India is set to mark the driest August since 1901 which is clearly being seen as a result of intensifying El Nino conditions by the senior meteorologists.

This year, the monsoon is also likely to end up being the driest since 2015 as the country recorded a 13 per cent rainfall deficit, officials said.

An India Meteorological Department (IMD) official said that after recording a precipitation deficit of 32 per cent in August and prediction of only subdued rainfall activity in the next three days across the country, India is set to record the driest August since 1901.

The month of August recorded 254.9 mm of rainfall, which is 30 per cent of the precipitation received in the monsoon season. The country registered a rainfall deficit of 25 per cent in August 2005, 24.6 per cent in 1965; 24.4 per cent in 1920; 24.1 per cent in 2009 and 24 per cent deficit in 1913, as per the IMD data.

IMD chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said that El Nino is the main reason behind below-normal rainfall in August, apart from the "unfavourable phase of the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) which is known to reduce convection in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea".

El Nino is the climatic change that takes place due to the warming of waters in the Pacific Ocean near South America. Generally, El Nino is related to the dry weather and weakening monsoon winds in India.

El Nino impacts two low-pressure systems

"The favourable phase of MJO results in rainfall even if there is no low-pressure system. July recorded above-normal rainfall due to the favourable phase of MJO," Mohapatra stated.

He added that the prevailing El Nino conditions impacted only two low-pressure systems, among the five, which developed over the Bay of Bengal (BoB). "Another reason for below-normal rainfall in August was a lower number of low-pressure systems in the South China Sea and they, too, moved northward," he further stated.

Low-pressure systems that develop over the South China Sea typically move westward and reach the north BoB after crossing Thailand and Vietnam.

Drone attack over airport in northwestern Russia: official

A rapidly intensifying Hurricane Idalia crawled towards Florida's west coast on Wednesday (August 30), leading to flood alerts and mass evacuation orders as authorities issued a warning of the storm strengthening to "extremely dangerous" levels before landfall.

The US National Hurricane Centre (NHC) stated that Hurricane Idalia, which is a Category 2 storm with winds travelling at a speed of 105 mph, was moving towards the southwest shore of Florida, and leading to flooding in Havana and tropical storm conditions to western Cuba.

The Gulf of Mexico's warm waters are likely to turbocharge Idalia into an "extremely dangerous major hurricane before landfall on Wednesday," said the NHC, while warning of "storm surge inundation of 10 to 15 feet (3-5 meters)" in coastal areas.

NHC further stated that parts of the state’s Gulf Coast will be hit by the “life-threatening” storm.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis appeals 'leave now'

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said that the people present in the evacuation areas along the Gulf Coast must leave "now."

“I want to tell everybody in Florida – listen to your local officials. If they asked you to evacuate, please do so, and it doesn’t mean you have to go hundreds of miles. It could just be 10 or 20 miles inland to get out of that main area,” he said in a press conference, appealing to the coastal residents still present in the 23 counties where evacuation orders have been issued to go to hotels or seek shelters in places which are out of the danger zones.

Idalia is likely to make landfall towards the north of the coast, in the Big Bend area, which is big marshy land unlike Florida's other coastal areas and does not have barrier islands.

"We've not really had a hurricane strike this area for a long, long time," DeSantis said while speaking to reporters. "You are going to see a lot of debris -- there's a lot of trees along that track," the governor added, after suspending his presidential campaign to manage the crisis.

In its latest advisory, the NHC said that the forecasts were increasingly confident that Hurricane Idalia is likely to "reach the coast of Florida adjacent to Apalachee Bay Wednesday morning."
On Monday, DeSantis spoke with US President Joe Biden after which the latter approved an emergency declaration for the state, hence unblocking resources and federal funds. Meanwhile, staff has been deployed by the US Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Exclusive: Russia will not probe Prigozhin plane crash under international rules

The state-run national health service of Britain is set to become the first such service in the world which will offer an injection that can treat hundreds of cancer patients in the country and can reduce the time of treatment by up to three quarters.

After receiving approval from the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), NHS England on Tuesday stated that hundreds of patients who were treated with the immunotherapy, are set to receive "under the skin" injections of atezolizumab, which will eventually lead to more time for cancer teams.

"This approval will not only allow us to deliver convenient and faster care for our patients, but will enable our teams to treat more patients throughout the day," said Dr Alexander Martin, a consultant oncologist at West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, while speaking to Reuters.

NHS England stated that atezolizumab, also called Tecentriq, is usually administered to the patients intravenously, which means directly to their veins through a drip, which can take around 30 minutes or an hour for a few patients when it becomes difficult to access a vein.

ALSO READ | Engineered bacteria offer new hope for early detection of cancer

"It takes approximately seven minutes, compared with 30 to 60 minutes for the current method of an intravenous infusion," said Marius Scholtz, Medical Director at Roche Products Limited.

Atezolizumab, which has been the backbone of a Roche company Genentech, is an immunotherapy drug that empowers the immune system of the patients to seek and destroy cancerous cells.

Currently, the treatment is offered to NHS patients suffering from a range of cancers, which includes lung, breast, liver and bladder, through transfusion.

'Majority must opt for time-saving jab'

NHS England stated that it is expecting the majority of its 3,600 cancer patients, to start treatment of atezolizumab every year in England and opt for this time-saving injection.
The state-run national health service of Britain is set to become the first such service in the world which will offer an injection that can treat hundreds of cancer patients in the country and can reduce the time of treatment by up to three quarters.

ALSO READ | Engineered bacteria offer new hope for early detection of cancer "It takes approximately seven minutes, compared with 30 to 60 minutes for the current method of an intravenous infusion," said Marius Scholtz, Medical Director at Roche Products Limited. 'Majority must opt for time-saving jab' NHS England stated that it is expecting the majority of its 3,600 cancer patients, to start treatment of atezolizumab every year in England and opt for this time-saving injection. However, it added that the patients who will be receiving intravenous chemotherapy along with atezolizumab in combination may remain on the transfusion.
Guatemalan president-elect Bernardo Arevalo's political party on Tuesday (August 29) asked the election court of the country to overturn its decision to suspend the registration of the party.
Before the vote, attempts were made by the prosecutors to suspend Semilla and carry out raids against party offices. After the first round of voting was completed on June 25, Guatemalan judge Fredy Orellana asked the electoral tribunal to suspend Semilla on the basis of an investigation that was pending into alleged anomalies in the party's registration. The judge gave the order after receiving a similar request from prosecutor Rafael Curruchiche.

United States President Joe Biden, whose election campaigns have been focused on easing the financial woes of the voters, on Wednesday (August 30) launched a bid to decrease the cost of particular prescription drugs.
"Millions of Americans are forced to choose between paying for medications they need to live, or paying for food, rent, and other basic necessities. Those days are ending," President Biden pledged in a statement, a move that will be contested by Big Pharma in the court.

While delivering a speech in the White House later in the day, the president said pharmaceutical giants were "hoping the courts will do what Democrats in Congress wouldn't do: protect their exorbitant profits and keep negotiations from happening."
