Almost a decade was spent by Wagner's slain chief Yevgeny Prigozhin to build the mercenary group. The group emerged as the central force in Russia's war against Ukraine and the troops of Prigozhin worked towards spreading influence of Moscow across the globe and gathering President Vladimir Putin's allies in Syria and Africa.

Prigozhin's sudden death in a plane crash has now triggered multiple speculations about the dangling future of the group. But let's understand the journey taken by the Wagner group so far.

Prigozhin – a prison convict turned into a hot dog joint owner

Before the Wagner stint, Prigozhin – who was born in Leningrad, USSR (now St Petersburg, Russia) on 1 June 1961 – was one of the most influential and richest businessmen in Russia.

However, before soaring the heights, he spent almost 13 years in prison after getting implicated in various robbery cases in the early 1980s. He was released in 1990 when the Soviet Union was on the verge of collapse.

Once out of prison, Prigozhin started his business of selling hot dogs in St. Petersburg. As per the Guardian, in no time, Prigozhin had his hands in various ventures, from supermarkets to restaurants.

In 1995, he finally set up a network of catering companies and restaurants, which included St. Petersburg's well-known company called Concord Catering. Soon after, Prigozhin entered the list of one of the country's wealthiest individuals.

With the growing business, Prigozhin’s proximity with the Russian ruling class also increased. Prigozhin became the caterer of choice for the rich and powerful in Russia by the time Vladimir Putin came to power.

Prigozhin became the one who provided catering when Putin hosted some important world leaders like Prince Charles and George Bush. The caterer and the Russian leader soon developed a friendship that changed the shape of world politics, before they turned into foes briefly that is being viewed as a cause of his end.

Rise and rise of Wagner group

It remained unclear who decided to form the Wagner Group – Putin or Prigozhin. However, the group was formed during Russia's invasion of Crimea in 2014. Wagner Group and Russia's armed forces co-ordinated with each other but maintained their distance as recently as 2022.

Even as private armies remained officially banned in Russia, Wagner Group troops operated with impunity during Crimea's 2014 invasion. After Crimea was captured, Wagner’s private military contractors (PMCs) went to Donbas in Eastern Ukraine and assisted pro-Russian separatist forces of the self-declared Luhansk and Donetsk from 2014 to 2015.

In no time, Wagner became Putin's proxy army, getting their hands dirty in regions where Russia wanted to step in but officially could not. Prigozhin led this proxy army as a general.

In 2015, Prigozhin sent his Wagner troops to Syria when Russia intervened militarily in the country to support Bashar al-Assad amid the civil war. Wagner chief also got food and supplies. In Syria, Wagner saw itself engaged in some of the most intense fighting and for the first time faced accusations of war crime.

Slowly, Wagner Group was involved in every other conflict where Russia played a role, from civil wars in Libya and Sudan to Venezuela.

Invasion of Ukraine and Prigozhin's fallout with Putin

When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, the involvement of Prigozhin and his Wagner Group in the escalation was out in the open. Prigozhin also became an active recruiter and recruited convicts to fight the war. The group saw a sudden expansion with a surge of convict fighters. The group engaged in some of the heaviest fighting of the conflict and faced massive casualties.

Wagner Group achieved success in May when it seized Bakhmut, an eastern Ukrainian city, at the end of some of the most brutal fighting. After the city was captured, Prigozhin called out the alleged treachery of top military brass, targetting Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov.

He continued criticising the military leadership of Russia for failing to care about his troops and using his fighters as cannon fodder. The brewing tensions soon resulted in the armed mutiny of the Wagner group on June 24. However, before his men could reach Moscow, Prigozhin asked them to stop as Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko announced that he had negotiated a deal with Prigozhin. The Kremlin then announced that Prigozhin would shift to Belarus and won’t face prosecution.

Wagner's leader's death and a question mark over empty seat

In a sudden development, it was reported that Prigozhin had apparently died in an Embraer jet crash in the north-west of Moscow, along with other nine passengers and crew onboard. A day later, his death was confirmed by Putin himself.

Now with the death of Prigozhin, the complex commercial and military operations planned by the chief and the group across Africa, the Middle East and Europe hang in the balance. The operations of Wagner Group were already rolled up in Syria by Putin.

After the mutiny, the forces of Wagner deployed in Ukraine gave a base to the regular military of Russia and started relocating to an army camp in Belarus. The group is likely to stay more or less intact in Africa under new management and can be taken over by another Russian mercenary group.

As per analysts, Wagner Group is not likely to go through much changes in countries where it was operating through an official agreement with Moscow. CAR President Faustin-Archange Touadera's political adviser Fidele Gouandjika said that since Wagner troops were present in the country through a state-level agreement with Russia, "nothing will affect the presence of these instructors". Prigozhin is "a dead leader, we can replace him," Gouandjika added.

A mysterious 'wolf man' was seen roaming around the forests in central Germany's Harz mountains by some hikers, reported Bild.

The man, who is said to have lived for five years in the forest, was captured by two hikers on the camera, who as per reports saw him naked, without a piece of cloth on his body, and carrying a wooden spear at the foot of a ruined castle.

In the blurry photos, the man is looking either covered in dirt or extremely hairy while he is sitting on the ground and playing with the sand.

Naked and mysterious 'wolf man' seen roaming in Harz mountains of Germany

Thousands of emperor penguin chicks lost their lives across Antarctica's four colonies as the region hit record-low sea ice levels which caused a “catastrophic breeding failure” in late 2022, as per new research.

The satellite images showed the breaking of the stable sea ice and how the colonies had been completely wiped out at a time when the chicks had not grown their waterproof feathers completely.

Scientists stated that the future of emperor penguins remains uncertain in the wake of global heating because they have remained reliant on sea ice which has been predicted to decline as the oceans of the world continue to heat up.

ALSO READ | Century-old mystery behind Antarctica's Blood Falls finally SOLVED

The breeding failures were “without precedent” in the Bellingshausen Sea, said the research, as it happened for the first time that multiple colonies failed in a single season across a large region.

Grim story of ice disappearance

“It’s a grim story,” stated Dr Peter Fretwell, the lead author of the research and researcher with the British Antarctic Survey. “I was shocked. It’s very hard to think of these cute fluffy chicks dying in large numbers. We had predicted it for a long time. The sea ice loss has been unprecedented and far quicker than we imagined,” he added.

The sea ice in Antarctica shrank to a record low in February, after marking a record low a year before as the events of ice disappearance continue to shock the scientists.

From satellites, the colonies of emperor penguins are visible by the large patches of brown guano, which is a buildup of penguin excrement on the white sea ice.

WATCH | Scientists: no quick fix for Antarctic Sea ice loss

In the study which was published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment, it was seen that the sea ice started breaking apart at colonies at Verdi Inlet, Smyley Island, Bryant Coast and Pfrogner Point from late October to early December.

There has been a total loss of sea ice in many parts of the region. “In some cases, it’s possible the sea broke up into smaller floes or under the feet of the penguins,” Fretwell said.

“If they get immersed, the chicks will drown. If they get back onto the ice floes, they will freeze because they don’t have their waterproof feathers at that stage. A 1,500km region in length has lost almost all its sea ice. We have no real idea what happens if there’s no ice,” he added.

ALSO READ | Century-old mystery behind Antarctica's Blood Falls finally SOLVED The breeding failures were “without precedent” in the Bellingshausen Sea, said the research, as it happened for the first time that multiple colonies failed in a single season across a large region. Grim story of ice disappearance “It’s a grim story,” stated Dr Peter Fretwell, the lead author of the research and researcher with the British Antarctic Survey. WATCH | Scientists: no quick fix for Antarctic Sea ice loss In the study which was published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment, it was seen that the sea ice started breaking apart at colonies at Verdi Inlet, Smyley Island, Bryant Coast and Pfrogner Point from late October to early December. You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Share your stories and opinions with us here. WATCH WION LIVE HERE

Fox News on Wednesday (August 23) argued in the court that its hosts and guests were just raising questions and “presented a puzzle to unravel” when they continuously and falsely suggested that January 6 rioter Ray Epps was a government agent who had allegedly orchestrated the Capitol attack.

The defence argument was made in a defamation suit that was filed by Epps against the right-wing network. In his suit, he claimed that Fox figures, including its former host Tucker Carlson, ruined his reputation by repeatedly suggesting that a false-flag plot for hurting Donald Trump was led by him. He added that the claims made by the host were baseless.

Carlson, in around 20 episodes of his talk show, kept on talking about the conspiracy theory which claimed Epps was an undercover operative who “helped stage-manage the insurrection”.

Reportedly, Carlson argued that Epps was recorded on camera appealing to people to enter the Capitol, but did not ever enter the building himself.

A 10-minute video was shared on YouTube in which Carlson claimed that it was “highly strange” that Epps was not arrested and suggested that the coverage of Times on Epps was attempting to “cover something up”.

Meanwhile, the network in its argument further said, “The format of the segments involved setting out facts and raising queries on those facts, which indicated that issues surrounding (Epps) presented a puzzle to unravel, not a matter on which there were definitive answers.”

The arguments depend on the notion that the hosts of Fox News genuinely “asked questions” and “looked for answers” about the role of Epps in the January 6 insurrection. However, a previous defamation lawsuit which was filed by Dominion Voting Systems had showed that many Fox hosts operated in bad faith which raised claims on-air that they didn’t actually believe.

California mass shooting: At least five dead, several injured in bar

In 1997, a lone wolf crossed an ice bridge that briefly connected Canada with the remote Isle Royale, which lies off the coast of Michigan in Lake Superior and is renowned for its rich biodiversity.

His arrival revived the flagging fortunes of the wider wolf population, which had been hit by disease and inbreeding, and triggered cascading effects that improved the health of the overall forest ecosystem, a study in Science Advances showed Wednesday.

"Issues like inbreeding and low genetic diversity are an important concern for scientists," first author Sarah Hoy, an ecologist at Michigan Technological University told AFP.

"But this is the first study that shows when you have these genetic issues, they don't just impact the particular population and increase the risk that they will go extinct: they also have these really big knock-on effects on all the other species."

'Old Gray Guy'

The first wolves arrived on the island in the late 1940s, and their main prey are moose -- giving rise to the longest running study of a predator-prey system anywhere in the world.

But by the 1980s, the wolves were in trouble due to the arrival of canine parvovirus which drove their numbers down from a high of 50 to around 12.

Though the disease eventually disappeared, the population didn't recover right away. The reason was severe inbreeding, which caused lower reproductive success, as well as poorer health outcomes such as spinal deformities of the kind often seen in purebred dogs.

"If you're a wild wolf and you're having to take down prey like a moose that's eight times your size, that can make life in the wild really tough for you," Hoy said.

Enter the immigrant, identified as "M93" by scientists, but affectionately nicknamed "The Old Gray Guy."

M93 was unrelated to the existing population, and also had the advantage of being unusually large -- a big benefit when defending turf from rivals or taking down 800 pound ungulates.

He quickly became the breeding male in one of the island's three wolf packs and went on to sire 34 pups, greatly improving the genetic health of the population and the kill rate of its prey.

Restoring balance

Moose are voracious herbivores, consuming up to 30 pounds (14 kilograms) of vegetation a day. By reducing their numbers, the wolves helped bring the forest back into balance, which was most notable in the effects on balsam firs -- the species commonly used as Christmas trees.

With fewer moose, the trees began growing at rates not seen in decades, which is vital for the renewal of the forest and the myriad plant and animal species that depend on it.

The benefits brought by M93's arrival lasted around a decade, then the situation deteriorated once more -- ironically as a result of his extreme reproductive success.

By 2008, two years after his death, 60 per cent of the wolf population's gene pool was inherited from M93, which led to a return of genetic deterioration.

M93 himself began breeding with his daughter after his mate died, and simultaneous inbreeding by other members triggered a rapid population decline until 2015, when there were just two wolves left: a father-daughter pair who were also half-siblings.

Fortunately, a restoration program beginning in 2018 has once more brought balance to the system, and there are currently around 30 wolves and just under a thousand moose on the island.

For Hoy, a key takeaway is that the same principle of inserting just a small number of individuals could be applied to other imperiled predator populations that suffer from the harmful effects of inbreeding, such as lions or cheetahs, to similarly improve their ecosystems.

William Ripple, a professor of ecology at Oregon State University who was not part of the research, told AFP it was an "important study" that advances understanding "by showing that genetic processes may limit the ecological effects of a keystone species, the gray wolf."

How a lone 'immigrant' wolf revived a forest ecosystem

The family members of a 26-year-old doctor, who committed suicide last year, claimed that work-life imbalance and working more than 200 hours overtime every month took a toll on him as they called for a change in the overwork culture which has plagued the country for years.

Takashima Shingo was posted as a resident doctor at a hospital in Kobe City when he committed suicide last May, as per the public broadcaster NHK.

According to the lawyers of the family, Takashima had to work more than 207 hours of overtime in the month of April and could not take a day off for three months, reported NHK.

Last week, Hospital Konan Medical Centre refuted the allegations in a press conference. However, in June, the labour inspection body of the government ruled that the man's death was a work-related incident because of prolonged working hours, as per NHK, which also highlighted the immense pressure that health care workers face.

For long, Japan has battled a persistent overwork culture, as employees across different sectors report punishing hours, deference to the company and high pressure from supervisors, as per the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.

The mental health toll and increasing stress have also caused a phenomenon called “karoshi,” or “death by overwork”, which resulted in legislation aimed at preventing injury and death from excessive work hours.

In a press conference last Friday (August 18), the family of Takashima claimed that the young man was driven to desperation and expressed their sorrow over his sudden demise.

'Too hard', complained the man who committed suicide

Before his suicide, his mother Junko Takashima stated that the doctor would complain “it was too hard” and that “no one would help him,” as per a video published by local media of the news conference.

“'No one is looking out for me,' he kept telling me. I think the environment put him over the edge. My son will not become a kind doctor, nor will he be able to save patients and contribute to society,” she stated. “However, I sincerely hope that the working environment for doctors will improve so that the same thing will not happen again in the future," she added.

The brother of Takashima, speaking at the news conference, said, “No matter how we look at my brother’s work hours, 200 hours (of overtime) is an unbelievable number, and I don’t think the hospital is taking a solid approach to labour management in the first place.”

Last week, the Konan Medical Centre pushed back the allegations in the press conference.

“There are many times when (doctors) spend time studying on their own and sleeping according to their physiological needs. Due to the very high degree of freedom, it is not possible to accurately determine working hours," said a spokesperson.
