Actor Danny Masterson, who had starred in “That ’70s Show”, was sentenced to 30 years to life by a judge on Thursday (September 7) for raping two women two decades ago.
The sentence was handed down by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Charlaine F. Olmedo to the 47-year-old after statements of the victims were heard, which revealed the trauma they went through and the suffering they faced for years due to the disturbing memories.

The actor, who was in police custody from May, was present in the court wearing a suit. Masterson silently watched the women, who gave their statements, without any visible reaction.

Meanwhile, the other woman who was also raped by the star said that he “has not shown an ounce of remorse for the pain he caused.” Addressing the judge, she said, “I knew he belonged behind bars for the safety of all the women he came into contact with. I am so sorry, and I’m so upset. I wish I’d reported him sooner to the police.”
An initial jury was not able to reach verdicts on three counts of rape in December and hence, a mistrial was announced, after which Masterson was retried by the prosecutors on all three counts earlier this year.

The United States is shifting some of its troops from a base in Niamey, the capital city of Niger to another place in the Agadez area, said the Pentagon on Thursday. In Niger, the rebel officers came to power in a July coup.

Washington's 1,100 military personnel are present in Niger. However, the Defence Department said that the officer was largely present on bases while curtailing activities like joint training after Niger's military takeover,

The United States "is repositioning some of our personnel and some of our assets from Air Base 101 in Niamey to Air Base 201 in Agadez," said Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh, while speaking to journalists.

"There's no immediate threat to US personnel or violence on the ground," she stated while describing the step as a "precautionary measure." A "small group" of personnel are still going to remain at Air Base 101 following the step which is ongoing currently, said Singh.

US moves out troops, conducts 'precautionary' repositioning of forces in Niger

A star, which is similar to the sun, and is being “repeatedly shredded and consumed” by a black hole around 500m light years away has been spotted by astronomers.

Regular outbursts of light were generated by the dramatic event about every 25 days which was observed by scientists at the University of Leicester.

Generally, black hole outbursts, which are commonly known as tidal disruption events, appear when a star gets consumed by a black hole. However, repeated emissions mean that the star is only partially getting destroyed again and again.

But, in instances which involve repeated eruptions, two types of outbursts take place – those that occur every year and those that take place every few hours, as per the researchers. In this case of repeated shredding of star, the regularity of emissions lay between the two, said the team.

Dr Phil Evans of the University of Leicester School of Physics and Astronomy and the lead author of the study said, “This is the first time we’ve seen a star like our sun being repeatedly shredded and consumed by a low-mass black hole.”

Through the models of the Swift J0230 outburst, it was suggested that the star is as big as the sun and is in an elliptical orbit near a low-mass black hole which is at the centre of its galaxy. As per the calculations, material equivalent to the mass of three Earths has been ripped from the atmosphere of Swift J0230 and heated up by falling into the black hole.

The intense heat, which is estimated to be around 2,000,000C (3,600,000F), releases a large amount of X-rays that were first picked up by Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory of NASA. As per the estimate of the researchers, the black hole is around 10,000 to 100,000 times the mass of the sun, which makes it a supermassive black hole in small size.

Former trade adviser of Donald Trump Peter Navarro was convicted of contempt of Congress after he failed to comply with the House select committee's subpoena, which has been carrying out the investigation into the US Capitol attack that took place on January 6, 2021.

Navarro is former US President Donald Trump's second ex-aide who is facing prosecution for his lack of cooperation with the committee. Last year, Steve Bannon was convicted on two contempt counts. The case of Bannon is currently on appeal.

During the closing arguments on Thursday (September 7), the jury was informed by the prosecutors that Navarro “made a choice” not to comply with a subpoena of February 2022. Justice Department attorney Elizabeth Aloi stated that the government only functions when people follow the rules and they should be held accountable if they don't.

“The subpoena – it is not hard to understand,” she stated, adding that Navarro knew “what he was required to do and when he was required to do it”. Navarro’s attorney Stanley Woodward argued that the subpoena was not simple and stated that it failed to specify where in the Capitol complex the accused had to show up for his deposition.

Navarro's non-compliance was an accident or mistake?

He added that the prosecutors were not able to prove that Navarro was willful in failure to follow the subpoena, adding that his non-compliance with the testimony's demand was a result of an accident or mistake that was not established by the prosecutors.

“Do we know that his failure to comply beyond reasonable doubt wasn’t the result of accident, inadvertence or mistake?” he stated.

Former trade adviser of Donald Trump Peter Navarro was convicted of contempt of Congress after he failed to comply with the House select committee's subpoena, which has been carrying out the investigation into the US Capitol attack that took place on January 6, 2021.

ALSO READ | Vivek Ramaswamy declines to elucidate his remarks criticising Donald Trump in interview “The subpoena – it is not hard to understand,” she stated, adding that Navarro knew “what he was required to do and when he was required to do it”. “Why didn’t the government present evidence to you about where Dr. Navarro was or what he was doing on the day when the deposition was scheduled deposition,” asked Woodward to the jury. “Something stinks,” he added. In response, Prosecutor John Crabb said, “Who cares where he was. Trump's former advisor Peter Navarro found guilty of contempt of Congress

US former president Donald Trump is likely to appeal for moving the Georgia criminal case, in which he faced accusation of conspiring to overturn his loss in US election 2020, from state to federal court, stated his lawyer in a court filing on Thursday (September 7). The federal court is likely to be a more favourable place for Trump.

“President Trump hereby notifies the Court that he may seek removal of his prosecution to federal court,” said his lawyer Steven Sadow, in a brief court filing. “To be timely, his notice of removal must be filed within 30 days of his arraignment,” he added.

Many of the 18 co-defendants of Trump, which include his former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, have submitted petitions for moving their cases to federal court since they were charged last month after an investigation, headed by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.

However, such a move will still include a trial by Willis as per Georgia state law. It is likely that US District Judge Steve Jones will rule on the petitions for moving the case to the federal court in the weeks ahead.

Former co-CEO of FTX's Bahamian subsidiary and Sam Bankman-Fried's top lieutenant, Ryan Salame pleaded guilty on Thursday (September 7) in Manhattan federal court to making tens of millions of dollars in unlawful campaign donations.

The plea has been submitted less than one month before the scheduled October 3 trial of Bankman-Fried on conspiracy and fraud charges stemming from the November 2022 collapse of now-bankrupt FTX.

The prosecutors stated that billions of dollars were stolen by Bankman-Fried from FTX customer deposits to cover the losses of his hedge fund Alameda Research, and the lenders and investors were lied to about the financial condition of his companies.

Salame, 30, was scheduled to appear before United States District Judge Lewis Kaplan in Manhattan, who is also overseeing the case of Bankman-Fried, at 3 pm EDT (1900 GMT). Salame guilty plea makes him Bankman-Fried's companies' fourth former executive to plead guilty.

Janmashtami was celebrated with much fanfare across the country on Thursday, with thousands of devotees thronging the major temples in Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, the birthplace of Lord Krishna. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted people on the occasion. He wished for new energy and enthusiasm in the lives of "every member of my family", a reference to citizens. "Jai Shri Krishna," Modi added in his post on X. Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the ISKCON temple located in the East of Kailash, South Delhi and performed a pooja. Thousands of devotees witnessed the "abhishek" (bathing of the deity) ceremony of Lord Krishna at the Radha Raman, Radha Damodar and Gokulanand temples in Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, officials said. Balram Goswami, the priest of the Radha Damodar temple, said while the festival is celebrated at midnight everywhere, it is celebrated during the day at the three major Mathura temples in accordance with the tradition set up by noted seer Jeev Goshwami nearly 500 years ago. Since the Shahji temple in Vrindavan also celebrates all the festivals in accordance with the traditions followed at the Radha Raman temple, there too, Janmashtami was celebrated in the morning, the priest of the temple, said. At the Srikrishna Janmabhumi, the day started with the blowing of shehnai and the sound of conch and drum beats, followed by the "abhishek" of the deity and the distribution of the "charnamrit" among the devotees. Thousands of devotees paid obeisance to the deities at the Bhagwat Bhavan temple and other temples at the Srikrishna Janmasthan. Headed by Shailjakant Mishra, the vice-president of the Uttar Pradesh Vraj Tirth Vikas Parishad, state ministers Laxmi Narain Chaudhary and Jaiveer Singh, District Magistrate (DM) Shailendra Singh and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shailesh Kumar Pandey, a procession was taken out from the Srikrishna Janmasthan. It passed through the main streets of Mathura. Janmashtami was also celebrated at the Dwarkadhish temple, Vrindavan, Govardhan and Nandgaon. "It is invigorating to witness the Janmashtami celebrations in Mathura. One cannot experience this anywhere else," said Bimalendra Mishra, a resident of Lakhimpur Kheri who travelled to Mathura to participate in the festival. A large number of foreign devotees of Lord Krishna also paid obeisance to the deities at the ISKCON and Radha Damodar temples in Vrindavan. According to Panchagoda Prabhu, the president of the Krishna Balaram temple (ISKCON, Vrindavan), hundreds of devotees from different countries paid obeisance to the temple deity. Meanwhile, at least 35 "Govindas" involved in the formation of human pyramids as part of the Dahi Handi celebrations were injured in Mumbai, officials said. The Dahi Handi festival is celebrated on the occasion of Janmashtami. As part of the celebrations, "Govindas" or Dahi Handi participants form multi-tiered human pyramids to break earthen pots filled with curd suspended in the air. "At least 35 Govindas have suffered injuries during the Dahi Handi celebrations in Mumbai. Four of them have been admitted to hospitals -- two each in the civic-run KEM Hospital at Parel in central Mumbai and the Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar," an official said. Janmashtami celebrations in Delhi's Dwarka incorporated "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" -- the theme of the upcoming G20 summit in the national capital. Union Minister Smriti Irani and BJP general secretary BL Santhosh attended the celebrations. In view of India's G20 presidency, the Divya Jyoti Jagrati Sansthan (DJJS) celebrated Janmashtami by incorporating the theme of the upcoming summit of the bloc -- "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" (the entire world is one family) -- according to a statement issued by the organisers. The event was organised on September 6-7 at the DDA ground in Sector 10, Dwarka. You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Share your stories and opinions with us here.
Concussion substitute Marnus Labuschagne played a match-winning innings for Australia to trump an unbeaten century by South African captain Temba Bavuma in the first one-day international at the Mangaung Oval on Thursday.

He shared an unbeaten eighth-wicket stand of 112 with Ashton Agar, who made 48 not out.

Green was ruled out after being struck on the left earpiece of his helmet by the second ball he faced from Kagiso Rabada before he had scored.

He finished with 14 fours and a six off 142 balls despite struggling with cramp towards the end of the innings.
