With the clock ticking down to what has been called the biggest party on Earth, Brazilian dancer Pedro H. Gaspar confesses he is "excited... and tired."

Tired from long months of intense rehearsals. Excited because Rio de Janeiro's legendary carnival is about to start.

"We talk a lot here about 'PCT': pre-carnival tension, which every samba school performer feels," says the smiling, elegant Gaspar, a 30-year-old member of Unidos de Vila Isabel, one of 12 schools that will compete in Rio's famed carnival parade competition Sunday and Monday nights.

"Carnival is here" is one of Rio's favourite catch-phrases. The iconic beach city has been criss-crossed for weeks by "blocos," the street parties that draw throngs of revelers in alternately skimpy and extravagant costumes this time of year, drunk on happiness and beer.

But the pinnacle of the party will be the samba schools' sumptuous strut down the avenue at the city's "Sambadrome," the 70,000-capacity parade venue designed by modern architect Oscar Niemeyer, which is celebrating its 40th birthday this year.

Samba, the Afro-Brazilian musical genre that fuels the festivities, is for its part a century old, but still as explosively creative as ever.

With towering floats, thundering drum sections and gorgeous dancers in sparkling, barely-there outfits, each samba school will vie for the coveted title of carnival champions.

<h2>'Fundamental issues'</h2>

But beyond the glitter, carnival also raises pressing political and social issues.

Many of the parades this year will pay tribute to little-known heroes of black history or celebrate Brazil's African and Indigenous roots.

One famed school, Salgueiro, will tell the story of the Yanomami Indigenous people, who are suffering a humanitarian emergency blamed on illegal gold mining in the Amazon rainforest.

Their plight reached crisis level under far-right ex-president Jair Bolsonaro. But his successor, veteran leftist Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, has struggled to reverse the unfolding tragedy.

"The samba school parades continue to be a place for Brazil to self-reflect," says anthropologist Mauro Cordeiro.

"Rio carnival is a space where we talk about Brazil's fundamental political and social issues."

Not that there isn't plenty of room for silliness and fun: the biggest hit single of the 2024 parades is a light-hearted samba singing the praises of the cashew fruit.

But carnival is also serious business.

The party, which is projected to bring in more than $1 billion in revenues this year, faces many of the same problems as Brazil at large.

One is the iconic Mangueira, named for the "favela," or slum, where it was born 96 years ago, a stone's throw from the famed Maracana football stadium.

This year, the pink and green-sporting school will pay tribute to samba star Alcione to mark the 50th year of her career.

The multi-platinum singer co-founded Mangueira's youth program 36 years ago.

"It's very moving, because Alcione had a huge impact on our lives," says Mangueira native Barbara Rachel, who came up in the youth program herself and is today its cultural director.

"Not just my life, but the lives of an entire generation," says the 30-year-old, whose students will strut their stuff in their own parade when Rio holds its children's carnival Tuesday.

A request made by a transgender man for changing his gender in official records without undergoing sterilisation surgery was approved by a court in western Japan.&nbsp;

This is the first such ruling given by a court since the country’s top court removed a surgery requirement for making such&nbsp;changes in the records.

50-year-old Tacaquito Usui can now change his gender to male in his family registry, said the Okayama family court’s Tsuyama branch in its ruling on Wednesday (Feb 7). The original application of Usui for the revision was rejected by the court five years ago.

“It’s like I’m standing at the start line of my new life,” Usui said&nbsp;in a televised press conference after the ruling came out. “I’m so excited," he said.&nbsp;

The Supreme Court of Japan in October ruled that a provision of a 20-year-old law which made the reproductive organs' removal a precondition for a new gender's legal recognition was unconstitutional.&nbsp;

However, the ruling was also applicable only to the sterilisation provision and did not speak about the constitutionality of needing other procedures.

The Okayama court discovered that Usui was eligible for gender affirmation because of the hormone therapy given to him.

The law, which was addressed in the Supreme Court's ruling, came into effect in 2004.

The court stated that the individuals who wish to register a gender change need to get their reproductive organs, including testes or ovaries, removed.&nbsp;

The individuals also need to have a body that “appears to have parts that resemble the genital organs” of their expressed gender.

More than 166 million years after dinosaurs lived on Earth, scientists have said that they have discovered a winged dinosaur skeleton on the Isle of Skye in Scotland.

The findings were published in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology on February 5. The researchers claimed to have found the remains of a single pterosaur, named Ceoptera evansae, which is likely to have lived 166 to 168 million years ago on&nbsp;Earth during the Middle Jurassic period.

The research was headed by scientists from the University of Bristol, the University of Leicester, the Natural History Museum and the University of Liverpool.

According to the research, the incomplete fossil remains of Ceoptera evansae were first discovered in 2006 on a small beach close to the coastline of Loch Scavaig, which was located on the Strathaird Peninsula in the Isle of Skye.

The researchers, since then, analysed partial skeletons - which are remains of the wings, shoulders, backbone and wings - and digital scanning was used to reveal different elements of the skeleton which were "otherwise inaccessible" because of being embedded in rock.

Ceoptera evansae's skeleton is one of the first pterosaur species to be fully digitally prepared, according to the report.

<h2>Flying dinosaurs lived in China?&nbsp;</h2>

The researchers in the findings said that Ceoptera evansae belongs to a group of pterosaurs, called Darwinoptera.&nbsp;

It was believed that Darwinoptera mainly lived in China, where the species' fossils were discovered before.

In a press release, senior author on the paper and merit researcher at the Natural History Museum Professor Paul Barrett said that the discovery of this dinosaur in the United Kingdom was a "complete surprise".

"Ceoptera helps to narrow down the timing of several major events in the evolution of flying reptiles. Its appearance in the Middle Jurassic of the UK was a complete surprise, as most of its close relatives are from China," said Barrett.&nbsp;

"It shows that the advanced group of flying reptiles to which it belongs appeared earlier than we thought and quickly gained an almost worldwide distribution," he added.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the lead author on the paper and palaeobiologist from the University of Bristol Dr Liz Martin-Silverstone said that the findings bring researchers "one step closer to understanding" the evolution of pterosaurs.

The senate of France was rocked by a sex scandal after a female medic claimed that she had a sex tape which she had filmed with a senator. The medic claimed that the video was filmed inside the senator's office to gain favours and that it had made her “untouchable”.&nbsp;

Hinting at the Krishna Janmabhoomi case, Chief Minister of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath said that "in Mahabharat, Krishna asked for five villages to be given to the Pandavs, while Hindus seek just three centres of faith linked to three deities".&nbsp;

The chief minister made the statement while addressing the Uttar Pradesh assembly on Wednesday (Feb 7) and quoted Hindu poet Ramdhari Singh Dinkar's poem 'Krishna Ki Chetavani' from the book 'Rashmirathi'.&nbsp;

The comment was made by the chief minister days after the Varanasi court permitted puja inside a Gyanvapi Masjid's cellar and the Archaeological Survey Of India, in an RTI reply, said that the Keshavdev temple in Mathura was demolished by the Mughal king Aurangzeb for constructing a mosque.

The Hindu petitioners in the Krishna Janmabhoomi case have been claiming that Mathura's 17th-century mosque, Shahi Idgah, stands on the place where the birth of Lord Krishna took place. An archaeological survey of the site was recently permitted by the Allahabad High Court.

"Injustice was done to Ayodhya. When I talk about injustice, we remember something that happened 5,000 years ago. Lord Krishna asked for half the kingdom from Kauravas and said if that was difficult, then give only five villages to Pandavas. He talked about 5 villages. But here the demand is only for three places that are the centres of our faith," Adityanath said.

"The society, the faith for the past many years, is talking about only three. Only three because these are special places. These are not normal, these are the places where gods incarnated themselves," Yogi said, as he emphasised the importance of resolving the disputes in Kashi and Mathura.&nbsp;

<h2>Lord Krishna is now adamant, says Adityanath&nbsp;</h2>

"When Nandi Baba saw the celebrations in Ayodhya, he was adamant and threw the barricades open at night. Now our Krishna Kanhaiya is adamant," said Adityanath in the Assembly.

"Nandi Baba" is Nandi the celestial bull who is said to be the vehicle of Lord Shiva in Hindu religion.

Speaking about Ram Mandir's grand consecration ceremony, Adityanath said, "I was happy that our Lord has taken his place in the temple. I was happy that the consecration had been done. But I was also happy that we fulfilled our promise, 'mandir' wahin banaya' (built the temple there)."&nbsp;

In a recent study, researchers have claimed that the moon of Saturn, which has a massive impact crater on its surface and appears similar to the Death Star from Star Wars, has a hidden ocean which is buried miles beneath its crust.&nbsp;

With the discovery, Mimas - which is a 250-mile-wide ice ball - became the latest member to join an exclusive club of moons which harbour subterranean oceans. Saturn’s Titan and Enceladus and Jupiter’s Europa and Ganymede were already part of the group.&nbsp;

Astronomer at the Observatoire de Paris in France Valery Lainey said, "It’s quite a surprise. If you look at the surface of Mimas, there’s nothing that betrays a subsurface ocean. It’s the most unlikely candidate by far.”

Keeping in mind the peculiarities in Mimas’ orbit, the astronomers have drawn two possibilities: either an internal ocean of the moon helped its outer shell to shift independently from the core or that it contains an elongated core covered in ice.&nbsp;

The calculations done by Lainey and his colleagues, using images captured by NASA’s Cassini mission to Saturn, showed that the moon contains a hidden subsurface ocean.&nbsp;

“There is no way to explain both the spin of Mimas and the orbit with a rigid interior. “You definitely need to have the global ocean on which the icy shelf can slip," said Lainey.&nbsp;

The scientists said that an ocean, which is 45 miles deep, is hidden beneath Mimas’s 15-mile-thick icy shell, and temperatures close to the sea floor reach tens of degrees Celsius.&nbsp;

<h2>Are global oceans harbouring life?&nbsp;</h2>

The findings of global oceans in moons around Jupiter and Saturn have left scientists studying if they have a potential for harbouring life.&nbsp;

More than 100 geysers have been spotted on Enceladus where vapour blasts through surface fractures. If life ever evolved on the tiny moon, the plumes could propel extraterrestrial microbes out into space where they could be detected by visiting missions.

Lainey said that since the moon contained water which is in contact with warm rock, he can't rule out the existence of life.&nbsp;

However, if the hidden ocean is only tens of millions of years old, the possibility of the ocean harbouring life may be less.&nbsp;

He said, “Whether it’s too young, nobody knows. I would say: why not?”

Professor of planetary geosciences at the Open University David Rothery said that even if subsurface ocean was present beneath the surface of Mimas, there were comparatively easier places to look for life beyond Earth.&nbsp;

“There’s no indication of a connection between the internal ocean, where life could survive, and the surface or space where traces of life could be detected and sampled, such as we have done in the plumes of Enceladus, and hope to do on the surface or in plumes at Europa,” said Rothery, as reported by The Guardian.&nbsp;

“If there were life inside Mimas, it would be hidden by more than 20km of unbroken ice. If the ocean has existed for only 25mn years, that may not have been enough time for life to get started and established. Europa and Enceladus are much more promising candidates," he added.&nbsp;

In their decades-long quest for drugs which can battle Alzheimer’s disease, researchers seem to have found an unlikely candidate: Viagra, the erectile dysfunction pill.

While the study is not conclusive, the researchers discovered that men who were prescribed Viagra as well as similar medications were 18 per cent less likely to suffer from dementia in the later years of their life in comparison to those who were not administered similar drugs.

The effect of Viagra was the strongest in men who were prescribed the medicine a maximum number of times. The scientists found a 44 per cent lower risk of Alzheimer’s in those who were prescribed the erectile dysfunction pills from 21 to 50 times in the course of their study.

Although the findings are astonishing, the observational study was not able to determine if Viagra and similar pills were able to protect people from Alzheimer’s or if the men who were less prone to the condition were just more likely to use the tablets.
