Speaking about the incident on Thursday (Feb 8), Chiang Mai Airport director Ronnakorn Chalermsaenyakorn said that a passenger opened the emergency door which led to the activation of the inflatable slide because of which the aircraft was unable to take off.

Ronnakorn said that the plane was sent back to the terminal and the passengers disembarked from the flight after safety inspections were carried out by the technicians.

He said that because of the disruption more than a dozen other flights were affected at the airport.

The aircraft was given clearance for safe departure with all the crew members and passengers after the inspection, said Thai Airways.

Later, the passenger was seen in custody at a local police station, as reported by local TV station ThaiPBS, which had identified the male tourist as Canadian.

"He admitted that he opened the door, the reason was people were coming after him ... from his behaviour, it's likely he was hallucinating," said the passenger's lawyer, Jirawat Yarnkiatpakdee, while speaking to ThaiPBS.

The air traffic control tower was informed about the incident at 10:05 pm local time when Thai Airways flight TG121 was waiting in line on the runway.

The Airbus A320 was not able to move immediately and temporarily prevented other flights from landing and taking off, said the statement.

A strong earthquake hit Hawaii on Friday, US seismologists said, but there was no danger of a tsunami.

The 5.7-magnitude quake struck near Pahala on the main island of Hawaii, with its epicenter located around 37 kilometers (23 miles) below the Earth's surface, the US Geological Survey said.

The quake was felt all over the main island, according to a website on which people tell the USGS what they experienced.

The agency said the likelihood of fatalities or damage was low.

Hawaii is a seismically active part of the planet despite being in the middle of a huge tectonic plate.

It is home to six active volcanoes including Kilauea, which regularly wows helicopter-riding tourists who come to see its red-hot shows on Hawaii's Big Island.

It is also the location of Mauna Loa, the world's biggest volcano, which put on a weeks-long show in 2022 as it erupted for the first time in four decades, with lava fountains 60 meters (200 feet) high that sent rivers of molten rock down its flanks.

Sorghum is filled with various beneficial phytochemicals which act as antioxidants in the body and decrease the risk of heart disease, cancer, type II diabetes, and some neurological diseases.

Sorghum is the best source of dietary fibre and is vital for overall digestive function. It helps in keeping the digestive tract moving and relieves constipation.

3. Sorghum Has Cancer-Inhibiting Properties

Patients suffering from diabetes should avoid over consumption of ginger since it can be harmful. Ginger lowers blood pressure which leads to dizziness and exhaustion.

Sorghum does not contain gluten and is safe to consume by those who are suffering from celiac disease.

Sorghum contains darker-coloured 3-deoxyanthoxyanins (3-DXA) compounds which are said to have strong anti-proliferation activity against human colon cancer cells.

Sorghum is a good source of dietary fibre, which helps in curbing food intake, gives a sense of fullness in the stomach and leads to a decrease in food intake.

Sorghum is filled with calcium and magnesium which are essential for strong bones.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, in his interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson on Thursday (Feb 8), hinted at the possibility of a deal to free Evan Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter and boasted about having a personal relationship with former US president Donald Trump.

"There is no taboo to settle this issue. We are willing to solve it but there are certain terms being discussed via special services channels. I believe an agreement can be reached," said Putin, while speaking about Gershkovich.

The journalist was detained on March 29 last year and has been accused of spying, a charge which has been vehemently rejected by him and his employer.

His pre-trial detention was extended till the end of March by Russia. Gershkovich can be imprisoned for 20 years if found guilty.

Russian president further emphasised the fact that Gershkovich has not yet been tried and had received classified information.

“He’s not just a journalist. I reiterate. He’s a journalist who is secretly getting confidential information,” said Putin, while answering Carlson’s objections that Gershkovich is not a spy clearly.

Putin further claimed Gershkovich was “caught red-handed when he was secretly getting confidential information”, and added that he was “working for the US special services”.

He further hinted as to whom Russia is willing to accept in case of a prisoner swap.

Putin stated, "A person, due to patriotic sentiments, [who] eliminated a bandit in one of the European capitals… during the events in the Caucasus."

Two children - a three-year-old girl and a two-month-old baby - were rescued by the Philippine Red Cross after nearly 60 hours from a gold-mining village which was hit by a landslide on Friday (Feb 9).

The children's rescue was hailed as a "miracle" as the searchers had lost all hope of finding anyone alive.

The girl, whose age was not disclosed, was a part of more than 100 people who went missing after the village was hit by the rain-induced landslide, in which at least 11 people were killed.

The girl was found as bare hands and shovels were used by the rescuers to find survivors in Masara village on southern Mindanao island, said disaster agency official Edward Macapili of Davao de Oro province, while speaking to AFP.

"It's a miracle," Macapili said, adding that the searchers had felt that the missing people were probably dead.

"That gives hope to the rescuers. A child's resilience is usually less than that of adults, yet the child survived," he added.

The officials also shared a video in which the mud-caked child was being carried by the rescuer in his arms on Facebook.

"We can see in the social media posts that the child did not have any visible injuries," said Macapili.

He added that the girl met her father before going to the medical facility for a check-up.

Rescuers using heavy earth-moving equipment

On Tuesday night (Feb 6), a landslide hit the area and engulfed three buses as well as jeepneys waiting to pick up gold mine workers and also destroyed houses.

At least 11 people were killed in the landslide and 31 others were injured, while more than a hundred have been missing, as per the official figures.

The searchers were in a race against time as well as weather as they tried to rescue anyone who was alive in the thick mud, as it continued raining on Friday (Feb 9).

Heavy earth-moving equipment was also used by the rescuers in places and they relied on their bare hands as well as shovels to find people in the areas.

The searchers also used sniffer dogs to detect those who were buried beneath the mud and rubble.

Parts of Mindanao were pounded by rain on and off for weeks and this triggered flooding and dozens of landslides which forced tens of thousands of people to hide in emergency shelters.

Hundreds of families had to evacuate from their homes and shelter in emergency centres in Masara and four nearby villages fearing more landslides.

Meanwhile, classes have been suspended by the schools across the municipality. The area which has been hit by the landslide was declared a "no build zone" after previous landslides took place in 2007 and 2008, said Macapili.

"People were asked to leave that place and they were given a resettlement area, but the people are so hard-headed and they returned," he said.

"It's a miracle," Macapili said, adding that the searchers had felt that the missing people were probably dead. Also Read: Philippines: Six killed, 31 injured in landslide caused by heavy rains "That gives hope to the rescuers. Rescuers using heavy earth-moving equipment On Tuesday night (Feb 6), a landslide hit the area and engulfed three buses as well as jeepneys waiting to pick up gold mine workers and also destroyed houses. Watch: The Philippines becomes Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing economy Parts of Mindanao were pounded by rain on and off for weeks and this triggered flooding and dozens of landslides which forced tens of thousands of people to hide in emergency shelters. (With inputs from agencies)

In a joint statement, American and allied intelligence agencies on Wednesday (Feb 7) said that an advanced group of Chinese hackers have been aiming at critical US infrastructure, which has remained active for as long as half a decade.

The US cyber watchdog CISA, the Transportation Security Administration, the FBI and the US National Security Agency said that the group is called Volt Typhoon.

They added that the group had quietly burrowed into the networks of pipeline, mass transit, highway, aviation, rail, water and sewage organisations.

None of the organisations have been identified by name, however, the statement said that US intelligence officials had observed that the hackers are “maintaining access and footholds within some victim IT environments for at least five years”.

US claims Chinese hackers infiltrated water systems, trains and planes for five years

Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed that former US president Bill Clinton told him Russia could be welcomed into NATO, the western world's military alliance.

Putin also claimed that Clinton later backtracked and said that it wasn’t going to happen. He made the remarks in a pre-recorded interview with Tucker Carlson that aired on Thursday (Feb 8).

In the interview recorded at the Kremlin, Putin said that after he became president in 2000, he asked Clinton if Russia could join the defence alliance after the issues between the countries had settled at the end of the Yugoslav War.

“At a meeting here in the Kremlin with the outgoing President Bill Clinton, right here in the next room, I said to him, I asked him: ‘Bill, do you think if Russia asked to join NATO, do you think it would happen?’ Suddenly he said, ‘You know, it’s interesting. I think so,’” Putin said to Carlson.

Putin tells Tucker Carlson Bill Clinton agreed that Russia could join NATO

In a new study, Australian geologists discovered the reason why Earth was enveloped in extreme ice, like a giant snowball, almost 700 million years ago.

This was the era when the planet was covered with glaciers, which extended from the poles to the equator.

The research was carried out by a group of scientists from the University of Sydney who tried to explain the natural temperature regulation mechanisms of Earth while emphasising the delicate balance of Earth's climate with respect to the changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels.

Beneath the ice of “Snowball Earth”

Study’s lead author and ARC Future Fellow Dr Adriana Dutkiewicz speaking about the “Snowball Earth", said, “Imagine the Earth almost completely frozen over. That’s just what happened about 700 million years ago; the planet was blanketed in ice from the poles to the equator and temperatures plunged. However, just what caused this has been an open question.”

The team went on a geological field trip to the Ranges under the guidance of co-author Professor Alan Collins from the University of Adelaide. They were inspired and decided to use the University of Sydney's EarthByte computer models to look into the cause and study the prolonged era of the ice age.

The Sturtian glaciation, which was named after 19th-century European colonial explorer of central Australia Charles Sturt, spanned from 717 to 660 million years ago.

The ice age, which occurred long before the emergence of complex terrestrial plant life and dinosaurs, marks a significant period in Earth’s prehistoric timeline.

Here is what led to the ice age on Earth

A compelling theory has been shared by scientists, as per which the ice age, which is also called the Sturtian glaciation, primarily came into existence due to historically low volcanic carbon dioxide emissions which were compounded by the volcanic rock's weathering in present-day Canada, which were absorbing atmospheric CO2.

“We now think we have cracked the mystery: historically low volcanic carbon dioxide emissions, aided by weathering of a large pile of volcanic rocks in what is now Canada; a process that absorbs atmospheric carbon dioxide,” said Dr Dutkiewicz, in the study.

This glaciation, which stretches from 717 to 660 million years ago, was very significant. It occurred before the age of dinosaurs and complex terrestrial plant life representing a pivotal epoch in the history of Earth.

Dr Dutkiewicz said, “Various factors have been considered for the initiation and conclusion of this ice age, but its remarkable duration of 57 million years has been especially baffling.”

Mystery of why Earth was a giant snowball 700 million years ago has now been unravelled

A man, who was visiting Australia, spotted an enormous sea creature which had thousands of teeth. The anglers who were onboard were left surprised after the creature approached their boat.

Speaking to Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Thomas D’Emilio who had gone fishing near K’gari island with his friend Toby, said that he started feeling seasick.

He told the media organisation that because he was feeling seasick, they went ashore for some time and then decided to again go for fishing.

The video of the encounter with the whale shark was shared by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation on Facebook.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, whale sharks are the largest fish found in the world and they “reach up to 46 feet and nearly 24,000 pounds”.

Even though they are big in size and have “more than 3,000 tiny teeth,” these sharks are filter feeders and are seen as harmless to humans.
