A 2,000-year-old scroll that was buried in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius that destroyed Pompeii&nbsp;was read by three researchers using artificial intelligence (AI).&nbsp;

The researchers were handed a cash prize of $700,000 on Monday (Feb 5) for making the impossible happen.

The Herculaneum papyri have nearly 800 rolled-up Greek scrolls which were carbonised during the 79 CE volcanic eruption in which the ancient Roman town of Pompeii was buried, as per the organisers of the "Vesuvius Challenge."

The scrolls, which appeared similar to logs of hardened ash, were kept at the National Library of Naples and Institut de France in Paris, and have suffered extensive damage and even crumbled after attempts were made to roll them open.

After not being able to open them, the Vesuvius Challenge carried out high-resolution CT scans of four scrolls and offered multiple prizes to speed up the research on them. The amount offered totalled one million dollars.&nbsp;

<h2>Researchers decrypt about five per cent of scroll</h2>

The three researchers, who won the prize, &nbsp;were Luke Farritor, a student and SpaceX intern from Nebraska, Youssef Nader, a PhD student in Berlin, and Julian Schilliger, a Swiss robotics student.

The artificial intelligence technology was used by the group to distinguish ink from papyrus and to decode the faint and almost unreadable Greek lettering using pattern recognition.

"Some of these texts could completely rewrite the history of key periods of the ancient world," Robert Fowler, the chair of the Herculaneum Society and a classicist, said while speaking to Bloomberg Businessweek magazine.

The researchers had to decipher four passages of at least 140 characters, out of which 85 per cent of characters were recoverable.

Farritor last year decoded the first word written in one of the scrolls, which was the Greek word for "purple."

As per the organisers, the researchers' joint efforts have now resulted in decrypting of nearly five per cent of the scroll.&nbsp;

The scroll's author was "probably Epicurean philosopher Philodemus," writing "about music, food, and how to enjoy life's pleasures," contest organiser Nat Friedman said in a post on X.

The scrolls were discovered in a villa which was earlier believed to be owned by Julius Caesar's patrician father-in-law. The villa had a mostly unexcavated property which had a library that contained thousands more manuscripts.

As Earth continues to extinguish its limited years and resources, scientists have been trying to find a habitable place for humanity to flourish and not get extinct if the blue planet becomes inhabitable.&nbsp;

Now, in a remarkable finding, NASA has said it has discovered a "super-Earth” which has potential conditions and temperature for sustaining life.&nbsp;

The newly discovered exoplanet, which is 137 light years away from Earth, has been orbiting within a "habitable zone," as per NASA.&nbsp;

As per the astronomers, the exoplanet&nbsp;dubbed TOI-715b is around one and half times the Earth’s width and has been orbiting a small, reddish star.&nbsp;

In its press release, NASA said the same system can also host another Earth-sized planet, which, if confirmed, "would become the smallest habitable-zone planet discovered by TESS [the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite] so far.”&nbsp;

Because of the distance of the super-Earth from its parent star, it carries the possibility of becoming a conservative "habitable zone" and can attain the right temperature for the formation of liquid water on its surface which is important for sustaining life, as per the space agency and also added that "several other factors would have to line up, of course."

NASA stated that as per the conservative measurements of the habitable zone, "a narrower and potentially more robust definition than the broader 'optimistic' habitable zone", places the newly discovered planet in a "prime position" from its parent star.

The smaller Earth-sized planet is also likely to be placed in a conservative habitable zone.&nbsp;

The agency stated that due to the short distance between the super-Earth and its parent star, which is a red dwarf that is smaller and cooler in comparison to our Earth's sun, a "year" for the exoplanet is equal to 19 Earth days.

The tighter orbits hint at the fact that the "planets can be more easily detected and more frequently observed," said NASA.

NASA discovers ‘super-Earth’ with habitable zone. This planet 137 light years away assures…

In a rare breakthrough, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) detected two exoplanets orbiting two different dead stars or "white dwarfs."

The exoplanets detected, not only resembled the gas giants - Jupiter and Saturn - present in our solar system but the white dwarfs also hinted at the destiny of the sun.

After the sun is changed into a white dwarf, it is expected to destroy the inner solar system planets — till Jupiter.

Speaking to Space.com, an astronomer at the Space Telescope Science and lead author of the research Susan Mullaly said, "Very few planets have been discovered around white dwarf stars. What is extraordinary about these two candidate planets is that they are more similar to planets in our outer solar system in temperature, age, mass and orbital separation than any planets previously found."

"This offers our first chance to see what a planetary system looks like after its star dies," Mullaly said.

<h2 lang="en-US">Here's what JWST's snapshots tell us about our future</h2>

The JWST's Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) directly observed the planet candidates as they orbited around the white dwarfs WD 1202-232 and WD 2105-82.

One exoplanet was orbiting around a white dwarf which is equal to 11.5 times the distance between the sun and the Earth.

The other exoplanet, meanwhile, was at a distance of about 34.5 times the distance between the sun and the Earth from its dead stellar parent.

It is well-known that when the sun's fuel supply for carrying out the nuclear fusion processes that occur at its core is exhausted in around 5 billion years, the planet will swell up as a red giant.

However, the nuclear fusion will continue in its outer layers. When the sun dies, its outer layers will swallow Mercury, Venus, Earth, and possibly, Mars.

The outer layers will eventually cool and leave a smouldering stellar core, which is now a white dwarf and this will be surrounded by a planetary nebula of exhausted stellar matter.

However, these exoplanet detections hint at what can happen to planets beyond Mars, which are Jupiter, Saturn and others, when the sun dies.

"Our sun is expected to turn into a white dwarf star in 5 billion years," said Mullaly.

"We expect planets to drift outward, into wider orbits, after a star dies. So, if you wind back the clock on these candidate planets, you would expect these to have had orbital separations similar to Jupiter and Saturn," she added.

"If we are able to confirm these planets, they will provide direct evidence that planets like Jupiter and Saturn can survive the death of their host star," Mullaly said.

A team of engineers and scientists have reached Antarctica where they will be testing a drone which will help experts in forecasting the impacts of climate change. The autonomous plane is set to map areas of the continent which have till now remained beyond the researchers' boundaries.

The plane has been placed to test in the extreme weather around the highest peaks of Wales. This is the first experiment which will survey the mountains which are under the ice sheet so that they can make predictions on how quickly the ice can melt and add to the global sea-level rise.

Scientists have been making efforts to understand Antarctica better but the existing technology has been limiting them from exploring further.

Below-freezing temperatures, sudden storms and strong winds are common. Such dangerous conditions along with Antarctica's dark winters and the need for transporting large amounts of fuel and pilots have placed limitations on the use of traditional crewed planes.

The new drone was developed by the British Antarctic Survey along with UK company Windracers in a way that it can be easily repaired if it faces any issues.

Kenyan President William Ruto on Saturday blamed incompetent and corrupt government officials for a deadly gas blast in Nairobi that killed three people and injured 280.

A truck laden with gas canisters exploded just before midnight Thursday in Embakasi, a densely populated Nairobi district, unleashing a trail of destruction and sending people running for their lives.

The Petroleum Institute of East Africa said on Friday that the explosion occurred at an "illegal LPG refilling and storage site" whose owner and some customers had been convicted and sentenced in May 2023.

But&nbsp;Kenya's National Environment Authority (NEMA) on Saturday said Maxxis Nairobi Energy had obtained permission on February 2 last year to operate the site.

"Preliminary investigations have revealed that four NEMA officers unprocedurally processed the licence and are therefore culpable," NEMA Board Chairman Emilio Mugo said in a statement.

"The board therefore, directs that the implicated officers step aside immediately pending further investigation by the relevant government agencies," he said.&nbsp;

<h2>'Incompetence and corruption'&nbsp;</h2>

President Ruto, without mentioning NEMA, said: "Government officials issued licences for gas installations in residential areas when it was very clear that it was the wrong thing to do, but because of incompetence and corruption they issued licences," he said.

Ruto said they should be sacked and "prosecuted for the crimes they have committed".&nbsp;

A joint statement by the interior and energy ministers said that according to preliminary findings, "the refilling of LPG cylinders was done using direct manifold connections to LPG tanker increasing the risk of leakage and explosion".

"Twice in March 2020 and January 2021, the plant that was illegally constructed at the said location was demolished... the operators charged in court," it added.

"As we call for caution and adherence to the rule of law, those culpable in this unacceptable occurrence will be held accountable,"&nbsp;Kenya's Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said in a statement on X, formerly Twitter.

Government spokesman Isaac Maigua Mwaura said three Kenyans died and 280 others were taken to hospital after the explosion ignited a "huge ball of fire that spread widely".

The inferno damaged vehicles and many businesses, with a garment and textile factory burned to the ground.

Douglas Kanja, Deputy Inspector of Police, said a guard at the gas site had been arrested and investigations were ongoing.

Residents said they had long feared such a disaster, accusing the government of being "irresponsible" by allowing inflammable products to be stored near their homes.

"Why do we have gas plants in the middle of estates?&nbsp;This&nbsp;is a residential area and that is a gas plant right there. And it is not one, there are several," Magdalene Kerubo,&nbsp;34, told AFP.

Kenya's Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) also said it had denied permission three times last year for the construction of an LPG storage and filling plant at the site.

"The main reason for the rejection was failure of the designs to meet the safety distances stipulated," it said, noting "the high population density around the proposed site".

Embakasi is a residential and industrial area with a population of about one million according to the 2019 census and lies 10 kilometres (six miles) from&nbsp;Kenya's main international airport.

Kenyan president criticises 'incompetence', 'corruption' after deadly blast

An old rusted rocket, which was designed to carry an inert nuclear missile, was found in the garage of a local man. The police officials in Washington state said that they found the rusted rocket after the police officials in Bellevue were given a call by a military museum in Ohio to make a very unusual donation.

After receiving the call, a bomb squad was sent by the police to the home of the potential donor.

"And we think it's gonna be a long, long time before we get another call like this again," said the police, while referring to the iconic song of Elton John - Rocket Man.

The police, in a press release, said that the device is "in fact a Douglas AIR-2 Genie (previous designation MB-1), an unguided air-to-air rocket that is designed to carry a 1.5 kt W25 nuclear warhead".

However, no warhead was attached to the rocket which meant it was not of any danger to the community.

<h2 lang="en-US">'Just a gas tank': Police calls the event “not serious at all”</h2>

Speaking to BBC News on Friday (Feb 2), Bellevue Police Department spokesman Seth Tyler said that the device was "just basically a gas tank for rocket fuel".

He said that the event was "not serious at all". "In fact, our bomb squad member asked me why we were releasing a news release on a rusted piece of metal," Tyler said.

The call was made to the police from the National Museum of the US Air Force near Dayton, Ohio.

The man, in whose garage the rocket was found, "was not expecting a call from us", said Tyler, adding that it seems that he was not informed by the museum that they would be reporting his donation offer.

"He was gracious enough to let us have a look at it and we determined that it was safe," Tyler said.

The officials never had any idea of a nuclear warhead being present in the neighbourhood and hence, never felt the need to evacuate the city of 150,000 people.

The man informed the police that the rocket belonged to his neighbour who had expired and it was purchased originally by him from an estate sale. The item was finally deemed by the police as an "artefact with no explosive hazard".

"Because the item was inert and the military did not request it back, police left the item with the neighbour to be restored for display in a museum,” they added.

In a new discovery, the archaeologists have now claimed that the bedbugs were brought to the United Kingdom by the Romans.

Fresh evidence, which proved that the bedbugs were brought by the Romans, was unearthed by the archaeologists working at Vindolanda, which is a Roman garrison site located in the south of Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland, reported&nbsp;The Guardian.

In the study, the head of the Vindolanda archaeological team Dr Andrew Birley said, “It is incredibly rare to find them in any ancient context.”

The discovery was made by 24-year-old Katie Wyse Jackson, who is a student at University College Dublin (UCD). She was investigating the excavated material as part of her research in archaeoentomology (the study of insects present at archaeological sites).

Jackson discovered two thoraces – which dated back to around AD100 – and was said to have come from the common bedbug, which is known as Cimex lectularius. The thoraces were found in the lowest layers of Vindolanda.

“Finding this kind of thing helps humanise the people of the past,” said Wyse Jackson, in her research.

Emphasising how Roman philosopher Pliny mentioned the bedbugs' medicinal value in the treatment of certain ailments like ear infections, she said, “People then had all sorts of notions of what insects could do.”

Lecturer in environmental archaeology at UCD Dr Stephen Davis was part of the specialist team.

He claimed that these thoraces were earlier found in Alcester in Warwickshire, another Roman site in England, and added that the ones found in Vindolanda would be “the earliest found in Britain so far”.

While analysing soil samples, Wyse Jackson also found beetles can provide further insights: “I can learn about trade, food storage, hygiene, waste disposal from what species are present and in what numbers. At the moment, I’m finding a large amount of grain and dung beetles,” she said.

“So we’re really not looking at a clean space here. Most importantly, a large proportion of the insects I’m finding are what we call synanthropic. They live in close proximity to humans. The Romans do have that reputation as being extremely clean and so it’s interesting to find all of these insects that are contrary to that,” she added.
