A distraught father in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh called up cops to complain that kidnappers were demanding millions of rupees to free his daughter. Turns out, she had faked it all.

In the police complaint, the man had said that he was sent pictures of his 21-year-old daughter, in which her hands and feet were tied. The kidnappers were demanding a ransom of of Rs 3 million, he added.

His daughter had been admitted to a coaching institute in Kota city in the northern state of Rajasthan.

After probing the case, the Kota police found that nobody committed any crime against her and that the kidnapping was faked by her.

"In the investigation so far, evidence shows that no crime has been committed against the girl and no kidnapping has taken place. From the evidence found so far, the incident appears to be false," said Kota Superintendent of Police Amrita Duhan.

Former US president Donald Trump appealed to the Supreme Court on Tuesday (Mar 19) to grant him absolute immunity in the federal election interference case, claiming that a ruling against him will "incapacitate every future president."

He said that former presidents are entitled to immunity from criminal prosecution for steps taken while in office, and argued that the "long history of not prosecuting" his predecessors shows that he cannot be criminally prosecuted.

"From 1789 to 2023, no former, or current, president faced criminal charges for his official acts — for good reason," Trump's lawyers said in court.

"The president cannot function, and the presidency itself cannot retain its vital independence, if the president faces criminal prosecution for official acts once he leaves office," they added.

“A denial of criminal immunity would incapacitate every future President with de facto blackmail and extortion while in office, and condemn him to years of post-office trauma at the hands of his political opponents,” Trump’s legal team further said.

Lawyer D John Sauer submitted a 51-page filing and appealed to the Supreme Court to reverse a decision of the lower court which rejected his claim of immunity and appealed that the charges filed against him should be dismissed.

A Roman statue, which is approximately 1,800-year-old, was found in the parking lot being built by construction workers in the United Kingdom.

The marble head of a Roman lady was excavated by the digger driver Greg Crawley at 16th-century country estate Burghley House in Peterborough, England, last year when he was carrying out the renovation works.

After two weeks, a bust was also discovered close to the place where the original Roman statue was found. A conservator cleaned, reassembled and examined the relics and said that the sculpture belonged to the 1st century or 2nd century.

As per the experts, an iron dowel was added to the statue which allowed it to remain attached to the pedestal or bust - following the pattern which was adopted by the Italian dealers historically in antiquities during the late 18th century when items were sold to the aristocrats travelling in Italy.

“It is believed that it was during one of the ninth Earl’s two tours to Italy in the 1760s, when he purchased many antiquities, that he brought the sculpture back to Burghley,” said the Burghley House, in a statement.

Estate calls excavation of head and bust as 'complete mystery'

The ninth Earl of Exeter Brownlow Cecil, an avid traveller and fine art collector, got the title in 1754, as per the estate.

The estate, however, is unsure how the head and bust remained buried in the soil in the parking and said that it is a “complete mystery.”

Burghley House emphasised that “explanations rang[e] from a bungled burglary to someone simply discarding the statue and it later being covered by soil.”

Digger driver Crawley said that it was an “amazing feeling to have found something so old and special” and called the find his “best ever discovery.”

“I had a real shock as the digger bucket rolled over what I thought was a big stone to reveal a face,” said Crawley, in the Burghley House statement.

“I couldn’t believe it when they told me it was a Roman marble statue,” he said. The statue will be put on display along with other statues which have been collected by the ninth earl at Burghley House.

Scientists claim to have successfully eliminated HIV, with the use of Nobel Prize-winning Crispr gene-editing technology, from infected cells. The technology, which functions like scissors at the molecular level, cuts DNA so "bad" that bits can be inactivated or removed.

The researchers now aim to remove the virus entirely from the body even though much more work is required to check it is effective and safe. The HIV medicines, which exist in the world, stop the virus but fail to eliminate it.

The team of scientists from the University of Amsterdam presented an abstract or synopsis of their early findings at a medical conference and emphasised that the work is just a "proof of concept" and will not turn into a cure for HIV any time soon.

Stem-cell and gene-therapy technologies associate professor at the University of Nottingham Dr James Dixon said that the complete findings still need much scrutiny.

"Much more work will be needed to demonstrate results in these cell assays can happen in an entire body for future therapy. There will be much more development needed before this could have an impact on those with HIV," he said, as reported by the BBC.

Crispr is also being used by other scientists against HIV. Excision BioTherapeutics said that after 48 weeks, HIV's three volunteers had no serious side effects.

However, a virus expert at the Francis Crick Institute, in London, Dr Jonathan Stoye said that it is "extremely challenging" to remove HIV from all the cells which might be harbouring the body.

"Off-target effects of the treatment, with possible long-term side effects, remain a concern. It therefore seems likely that many years will elapse before any such Crispr-based therapy becomes routine - even assuming that it can be shown to be effective," he said.

The immune-system cells are infected and attacked by the HIV which uses their own machinery to make copies of the virus.

Even after effective treatment, the cells contain the HIV's DNA or genetic material, even if the new virus is not being produced actively.

In a new find, a study has revealed that thousands of years old brains can turn into valuable scientific resources and provide clues to our past.

The new study looked into the catalogued human brains, which were found on the archaeological record across the world, and discovered that the organ was actually resisting decomposition, even though the soft tissues in the rest of the body melted away.

A team of scientists, headed by the University of Oxford's molecular taphonomist Alexandra Morton-Hayward, identified more than 4,400 preserved human brains which are approximately 12,000 years old.

The results of the study have contradicted the earlier belief that the human brain is among the body's first organs which decay after death.

Discovery of the preserved human brain to reveal evolutionary history?

According to the experts, the discovery of the preserved human brain has opened an archive sifting through which they can get a better understanding of the evolutionary history and can also identify the diseases which can afflict us.

"In the forensic field, it's well-known that the brain is one of the first organs to decompose after death – yet this huge archive clearly demonstrates that there are certain circumstances in which it survives," said Morton-Hayward.

"Whether those circumstances are environmental, or related to the brain's unique biochemistry, is the focus of our ongoing and future work. We're finding amazing numbers and types of ancient biomolecules preserved in these archaeological brains, and it's exciting to explore all that they can tell us about life and death in our ancestors," he added.

The soft tissue's archaeological preservation after a body dies (and is not artificially preserved through freezing or embalming) is a rare occurrence.

Studies of experimental decay have shown that the brain is among the first organs which succumb to decomposition.

"The archive compiled here represents the first step toward a comprehensive, systematic investigation of ancient brains beyond approximately 12,000 years before the present, and is essential to maximizing the molecular and morphological information they yield as the most metabolically active organ in the body, and among the most commonly preserved soft tissues," wrote the authors, in their paper.

"Ancient brains may provide new and unique paleobiological insights, helping us to better understand the history of major neurological disorders, ancient cognition and behaviour, and the evolution of nervous tissues and their functions," they added.
