India's Longest-Serving Prime Ministers

With the Lok Sabha elections 2024 results almost out, Narendra Modi is on the threshold to begin his third tenure as the prime minister. He will now enter the list of leaders who have served as prime ministers for over 10 years.  Here's a list of some of the India's longest-serving prime ministers:

Jawaharlal Nehru was the first and longest-serving prime minister of India. He remained in power for 16 years from 1947 to 1964.

Indira Gandhi became India's first woman prime minister to serve for nearly 16 years across four terms. The Green Revolution and the Emergency (1975-1977) and the nationalisation of banks became the highlights of her tenure.

Narendra Modi, the incumbent prime minister of India who is likely to serve for a third consecutive term, came to power in 2014 and has served for 10 years till now.

Manmohan Singh also served as India's prime minister for 10 years from 2004-2014.

A Lookback At Modi's Journey From Vadnagar To New Delhi

India's 2024 Lok Sabha elections have culminated and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has clinched a third term under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi but the victory trumpets remain mellow and '400-par' appears a far-fetched dream.

However, Narendra Damodardas Modi now stands at the threshold of his third tenure as the leader of the world's largest democratic country.

In the small town of Vadnagar, Gujarat - far away from the political muddle of the capital New Delhi - Modi spent his childhood with his parents and five siblings.

His father was a tea seller or "chaiwallah" who used to run a tea stall at the local train station to run the household.

After joining the RSS, the state headquarters of the RSS in the Indian city of Ahmedabad became Modi's home. He worked to save democracy in 1975 when India's then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had declared an emergency in the country.

In 1987, Modi joined the BJP and gained immense support and praise from one of the party's stalwart leaders Lal Krishna Advani.

He became the chief minister of Gujarat in 2001 and since then, the state witnessed a wave of innovation, industry and infrastructure development that turned into a “Gujarat model”.

Modi got embroiled in an ugly controversy when a Hindu-Muslim riot broke out in the state in 2002 after Muslims were blamed for setting on fire a train which was carrying Hindu pilgrims. Some blamed the Modi administration for failing to curb the unrest while few others even accused the leader of being complicit in the violence.

In the year 2014, the BJP had a landslide victory in the general elections as they defeated the ruling Congress, which marked the latter's worst defeat ever and Narendra Modi was chosen as the new prime minister.

One of the world's most active volcanoes Kilauea started erupting in a remote area early on Monday (June 3), said the US Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. The volcano had last erupted a half-century ago. The eruption is nearly 1.6 km south of the Kilauea caldera in a remote area inside the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park that had last erupted in December 1974. Six hours after the eruption, the observatory said that it did not pose much threat and minor or no ash emission was expected. After a few hours, it was reported that the eruption had "paused". Kīlauea’s eruption has paused as of ~12:30 p.m. today, but we are still enjoying the beautiful imagery folks have been sharing all day of Madame Pele - including these time-lapse videos that Keckies Tony Connors and Matthew Wahl captured overnight from Maunakea.
