As NASA prepares for a new cosmic journey to the moon which will be launched for the first time in more than 50 years, a new theory emerged that the astronauts might be facing the threat of sandblasts. While speaking to the Scientific American, University of Central Florida physicist Phil Metzger said that the latest findings regarding the potential pitfalls of mega-toxic and rapidly moving lunar dust— known as "sandblasts" — meant that astronauts may have required better safety standards for survival. Also Read: Scientists to install nuclear-powered UFO detectors in space to lure aliens to Earth, claims expert The researchers have already known that the equipment could be harmed by rocket sandblasts and lead to substantial erosion. However, while studying how they occurred, they figured out what are the best practices for the equipment and astronaut. The new theory also raised questions regarding whether current protections are even adequate for surviving the blast impact. What are the best ways to stay safe from sandblasts? In a NASA policy, Metzger co-wrote that small lunar landers should not touch down within nearly 1.2 miles of the Apollo landing sites to protect the place from the sandblasts of the crafts. According to a report published in Scientific American, the length cutoff was apparently arbitrary and was decided on the basis of what can be seen by a six-foot-tall person when looking out over the Moon's horizon. Watch: Robot astronaut heading to Chinese space station There were also theories regarding the danger of rocket sandblasts, however to Metzger, the numbers did not appear to be fitting. As per the latest theory, which was published in the journal Icarus, Metzger said that instead of eroding the lunar surface and stirring up dust, the rocket's massive speed leads to the creation of kinetic force which kicks dust-up in a way which is more complicated than earlier believed. According to the theory, the tiny accelerated rocks which are present in Moondust are likely to be moving at speeds which are four to ten times faster than what was earlier believed by the scientists. This further meant that the spacecraft and spacesuits needed to have extra reinforcements. "The amount of damage [lunar dust] might cause to a spacecraft," warned Metzger, adding, "could be an order of magnitude worse than we believed." (With inputs from agencies)

Astrophotographer Andrew McCarthy, who was observing sunspot AR3697 which appeared over the southeastern limb of the sun, captured its incredible footage from his backyard in Arizona.

The sunspot region, which was formerly called AR3664, attracted the attention of the media and skywatchers in recent weeks after it released a flurry of coronal mass ejections CMEs, which were expulsions of plasma and magnetic field, towards the Earth.

A tragic wish of death by assisted suicide of a young Dutch woman was finally fulfilled at the age of 29 last week.

The doctors terminated the life of 29-year-old Dutch woman Zoraya ter Beek last week after the court gave final approval to her request for euthanasia, which she had filed three years ago.

In the Netherlands, euthanasia is legal if the patient is deemed to be experiencing “unbearable suffering with no prospect of improvement.”

The doctors diagnosed Ter Beek with autism when she was 21 and by the time she turned 22, the girl started wearing a “Do Not Resuscitate” tag around her neck, as reported by The Free Press.

According to the reports, the girl had been hoping to end her life since she was a child because she faced bullying while she was growing up and she often felt as if she did not fit in.

“For me, autism is the major hiccup in my life,” said Ter Beek, while speaking to the Free Press. “That bothers me the most," she added.

Although the woman was physically healthy, she was struggling with mental illness like anxiety, depression and an unspecified personality disorder, reported The Free Press.

The girl used to dress like a goth to ward off bullies in school and appeared scarier. “The whole black look looked right, because that is how I felt on the inside,” Beek said.

The girl was living with her boyfriend Stein - who is an IT programmer and is 10 years older than her in age. Her parents did not approve of their age difference.

The girl had remained estranged for six years from her mother and three older sisters, while her father succumbed to cancer last year.

Ter Beek's boyfriend Stein was worried about her health and had asked her to get treatment. So, she went through various treatments to cure her mental illness.

This included going through 33 rounds of electroconvulsive therapy, in which the woman received electric current jolts to the brain.

However, after her last treatment in August 2020, the woman was informed by her psychiatrist that "there’s nothing more we can do for you. It’s never going to get any better.”

“After we heard that, we all kind of knew what that meant,” said Ter Beek, as she became more determined to apply to the Netherlands’ Euthanasia Expertise Center in December 2020.

“I was always very clear: if it doesn’t get better, I can’t do this. My whole friends and my support system, we really did it together,” she said, in her interview with The Free Press.

According to reports, Ter Beek saw herself as an ambassador for the Dutch euthanasia programme and said that there is a proper protocol in place for preventing abuse of the system.

“We’ve had this law for more than 20 years. There are really strict rules, and it’s really safe," she said to the outlet.

However, she did not support “suicide kits” which are widely available for those who were not permitted state-sanctioned euthanasia and was not in support of an update to the law which would allow assisted suicide without approval of the state or prior medical intervention.

Ter Beek's back-up plan

“I’m pro-death. But we need to be careful to protect people who’re in psychosis or depressed and not thinking straight,” said Ter Beek. “If you go on the suicide kit road, you don’t know if somebody, maybe with the right help, could have chosen to live," she added.

However, the woman had a backup plan in case her application was not approved. Ter Beek said that she had thought about using a suicide kit which she had obtained from Exit International, a group that advocates for the legalisation of voluntary euthanasia.

However, she did not apply her "escape plan" eventually. “Zoraya passed away today at 1:25 p.m. Or as she saw it herself: she went to sleep,” wrote one of her friends on X on May 22.

It’s never going to get any better.” “After we heard that, we all kind of knew what that meant,” said Ter Beek, as she became more determined to apply to the Netherlands’ Euthanasia Expertise Center in December 2020. Ter Beek's back-up plan “I’m pro-death. But we need to be careful to protect people who’re in psychosis or depressed and not thinking straight,” said Ter Beek. “If you go on the suicide kit road, you don’t know if somebody, maybe with the right help, could have chosen to live," she added. Ter Beek said that she had thought about using a suicide kit which she had obtained from Exit International, a group that advocates for the legalisation of voluntary euthanasia. However, she did not apply her "escape plan" eventually. “Zoraya passed away today at 1:25 p.m. Or as she saw it herself: she went to sleep,” wrote one of her friends on X on May 22. 5 Ways To Increase Your Chances Of Survival If You Are Kidnapped

Kidnapping may appear a rare event that you are not likely to encounter in your life. However, it is difficult to predict what kind of circumstances one may have to face. If you find yourself in such a situation, it is important to notice small details of the kidnapper, even if you have been blindfolded.

It is important to remain alert when you step out of your house, even if you are familiar with the routes you are taking. However, remaining alert even after getting kidnapped can help you escape, when possible.

If one is kidnapped, one should try doing something to cause a commotion. However, it is very important to stop the abductor from taking you to a second location.

Observe where you are being taken by the kidnapper. An awareness of the surroundings can help you escape.

Try to remain as calm as possible because that increases the chances of escaping unharmed.

In case, you have your phone, try using it to contact any of your family members and keep the phone line open so that your relative can hear what is going on.

5 Things To Know About Exit Polls Ahead Of Lok Sabha Election Results

Exit polls refer to a post-election survey in which the anticipated winners are predicted. The predictions are made based on voter feedback collated by various survey agencies after the elections.

The Election Commission Of India has prohibited the release of any exit polls amid the voting process. Hence, they are published 30 minutes after the last vote is cast.

Exit polls help in understanding how people have cast their votes in the elections. They help in decoding the political atmosphere in the country and who is likely to gain power.

4. What Did Exit Polls Predict in 2019?

After the Lok Sabha Elections 2019, exit polls predicted that NDA would win 285 seats. The BJP-led alliance, however, recorded a landslide victory by clinching 353 seats and the ruling party alone secured 303 seats.

5. When Was The First Exit Poll Held In India?

In India, the first exit polls were held in 1957 when the Indian Institute of Public Opinion conducted a post-poll survey during the second Lok Sabha elections. Doordarshan hired the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS) to conduct exit polls nationwide in 1996.

5 Things To Know About Exit Polls Ahead Of Lok Sabha Election Results

Former Iranian parliamentary speaker Ali Larijani, a prominent conservative, was among candidates registering on Friday for an early election next month following the death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash, state media reported.

Larijani, an adviser and ally of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, told reporters that he would focus on fixing the economic problems facing Iranians and "resolving (U.S.) sanctions", while maintaining a strong defence.

Larijani was barred from standing in the 2021 presidential race by the clerical-led Guardian Council which vets candidates. But an Iranian insider told Reuters that Larijani decided to run after he was assured by top officials that he would not be disqualified by the hardline council. No reason was given for the change.

Abdolnaser Hemmati, a former central bank governor, was among other hopefuls who registered on Friday. Hemmati, a low-key moderate, also ran in the 2021 presidential election.

Iran on Thursday started the registration of candidates for the June 28 election.

Once seen as a possible successor to Khamenei, Iran's ultimate decision-maker, Raisi's sudden death has triggered a race among hardliners to influence the selection of the country's next leader.

After a five-day registration period, the Guardian Council will vet candidates running for the presidency. Moderate politicians have accused the 12-member body of disqualifying rivals to hardline candidates, who are expected to dominate the race.

Turnout may be hit by restricted choice on the ballot and rising discontent over an array of political, social and economic crises.

Within Iran's complex mix of clerical rulers and elected officials, Khamenei has the final say on all state matters such as nuclear and foreign policies. But the elected president will be in charge of tackling worsening economic hardship.

Saeed Jalili, a former chief nuclear negotiator who two decades ago ran Khamenei's office for four years, was the first heavyweight hardliner to register for the election on Thursday.

Interim President Mohammad Mokhber has also been mentioned in Iranian media as a possible candidate.

United States President Joe Biden, while speaking at a press conference, said that Israel's ceasefire proposal will have three phases.

He added that the first phase will last for six weeks and will include a "full and complete ceasefire"; withdrawal of Israeli forces "from all populated areas of Gaza"; release of a number of hostages, including women, the elderly, the wounded in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners' release.

Biden added that Palestinian civilians would be able to return anywhere in Gaza and humanitarian assistance will be increased.

He said that the ceasefire plan will allow a "surge" in humanitarian aid and there will be "600 trucks carrying aid into Gaza every single day."

"With a ceasefire, that aid could be safely and effectively distributed to all who need it. All that and more would begin immediately," said Biden.

The phase three of the ceasefire plan will include the return of remains of hostages who were abducted from Israel on October 7 and are now dead.

"Any final remains of hostages who have been killed would be returned to their families," said Biden. He, however, accepted that some people in Israel would not agree with the proposal.

"I urge the leadership in Israel to stand behind this deal, despite whatever pressure comes," he added.

While addressing the citizens of Israel, Biden said that he has made a life-long commitment to the country.

"I ask you to take a step back and think what will happen if this moment is lost," said Biden. He added that "we can't lose this moment" and further argued against "indefinite war".

The US president emphasised the need for a diplomatic solution in the war-torn region. He said that Palestinian and Israeli leaders will have to come together and rebuild Gaza in a way that Hamas is not rearmed.

Biden said that the US government will provide all possible help to build schools and hospitals in Gaza. He said that the proposal is also giving Israel a chance to emerge as a strong regional player.

"All this progress would make Israel more secure," said Biden, adding they will no longer be "living in the shadow of a terrorist attack".

"All this would create the conditions for a different future, and a better future, for the Palestinian people," a future of "dignity" and "freedom", he said, adding, "This path is available, once the deal is struck."

According to the weather department, an incumbent western disturbance is likely to change weather from late Friday night (May 31) or Saturday (June 1). This has increased the possibility of some quick respite in temperature after a thunderstorm or very light rain.

The department had also issued a yellow alert for heatwaves in some isolated areas.

"There are chances of a drop in the daytime temperatures. However, some areas will still suffer heatwaves. Chances are the humidity will rise, which might increase the discomfort level during the daytime," an official at IMD stated.

The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to range between around 44 degrees Celsius and 30 degrees Celsius at Safdarjung on Saturday (June 1).
