The government of Delhi reached out to the Central government and moved the Supreme Court appealing for additional water supply from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh for a month amid a severe shortage in the national capital. In its petition submitted to the Supreme Court, the Delhi government said that there has been an increase in the demand for water in the national capital amid sweltering heat. "Delhi's need for water has increased in the scorching heat. It is everyone's responsibility to fulfil the needs of the country's capital," stated the petition. "Moreover, the temperature in Delhi has touched almost 50 degrees. This has further intensified the demand for water," she said.
South Africa's ruling ANC was on track Friday to score its worst electoral result ever, with the latest tallies showing voters deserted the party in droves and ended its 30-year political dominance.

The African National Congress (ANC) is now all but certain to fall below 50 percent of the vote, forcing the party to seek a coalition partner to have enough backing to name a president and form a government.

This marks an historic evolution in the country's democratic journey, as the party has enjoyed an absolute parliamentary majority since 1994, when its then leader Nelson Mandela led the nation out of white minority rule and into democracy.

With more than two thirds of the votes cast in Wednesday's general election counted, the ANC remained in the lead but with a score below 42 percent, compared to the 57 percent it won in 2019 and far off the 62 percent secured by Mandela in 1994.

As votes continued to be validated, data from the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) showed the centre-right Democratic Alliance (DA) held second place with 22.64 percent.

But it was not a surge by the DA that cut into the ANC's vote share.

But there will also be reluctance to invite Zuma, who left government facing a raft of corruption allegations, or firebrand Julius Malema's radical leftist Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) into government after both fought bitter campaigns against their former party.

The Coastal Road tunnel in Mumbai, India’s first undersea tunnel, encountered seepage and water leakage just two months after it was inaugurated amidst much fanfare.

On Sunday (26 May), evidence of seepage became apparent and videos of it have since been widely circulated on social media, triggering safety concerns ahead of the monsoon.

Visuals showed water dripping from the roof of the undersea tunnel and several dark spots on the walls where the paint had chipped off due to the dampness.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde inspected the site and assured commuters that there was no reason to be alarmed and that the leaks would be fixed promptly.

“I immediately called the commissioner. There is leakage at two-three places,” said the CM. He assured that experts have been consulted and stated, “There is no threat to the original structure. It will be filled using specific technology, and we will find a permanent solution. Passengers will not face any problems. There will be no water here during the rainy season,” said Shinde.

The CM told the reporters that leakage was from the expansion joints and is being addressed on priority. He further added that he has also suggested polymer grouting on all 25 joints on each side of the tunnel to avoid water seepage even during monsoon. It is still not clear what caused the leakage in the tunnel. The matter is being investigated.

A mysterious hole was captured on the surface of Mars by the High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera of NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) which left scientists wondering what lies beneath it.

The mysterious hole is located in the Arsia Mons region and has raised several questions regarding its origin and what it must be hiding.

Arsia Mons is among the trio of dormant volcanoes which clearly hints at the area having a history of volcanic activities. The pit is just a few meters across and is located in the Arsia Mons region of Mars.

Here's what scientists have speculated about the Martian hole

Amongst various speculations, one of the main theories suggest that the hole can be a skylight into an underground lava tube. This theory has been built on the fact that similar formations have been seen on Earth in volcanic regions like Hawaii.

Such types of skylights are formed when a lava tube's roof collapses and creates an opening. If what is being speculated is actually the reality, then lava tubes can become natural shelters for future astronauts, while giving them protection from harsh surface conditions like radiation, temperature extremes, and dust storms.

It is likely that the lava tubes created on the Martian surface are more extensive because of the lower gravity of the planet which offers large and stable environments that is suitable for long-term habitation.

There is also a possibility that the hole is just a pit which has been formed by tectonic or volcanic processes. Such pits are commonly found on Earth and are created after the ground, which is above a void created by volcanic activity, collapses.

However, scientists have till now not determined what is the exact nature of the mysterious hole on the Martian surface.

Lava tube - a habitat of aliens?

It is important to understand the nature of such formations on the surface of Mars for future human exploration.

If the hole actually goes to a lava tube then it has the possibility of becoming an ideal habitable zone.

Lava tubes have a stable environment which can shelter inhabitants from the extreme conditions of the planet.

Since there is lower gravity on Mars, there is a chance that the lava tubes are much larger on the Red Planet in comparison to Earth.

This makes these lava tubes more suitable for human habitation. Larger lava tubes are likely to give expansive and stable environments which can be best for constructing permanent bases.

They can also provide suitable environments for agriculture and even support life systems which are important for long-term human presence on Mars.

Watch: Gravitas: Cosmic hello from 226 million kilometres Lava tubes have a stable environment which can shelter inhabitants from the extreme conditions of the planet. (With inputs from agencies)
