Ukrainian forces on Monday (June 3) said that they have successfully struck a Russian S-300 missile system with the help of Western-supplied weapons in the Russian territory.

“It burns beautifully. It’s a Russian S-300. On Russian territory. The first days after permission to use Western weapons on enemy territory,” Ukrainian government minister Iryna Vereshchuk wrote on Facebook, along with a picture which purportedly showed the strike.

The strikes took place days after United States President Joe Biden allowed Ukraine to carry out limited strikes&nbsp;while making use of US weapons in Russian territory near Kharkiv after various European nations removed restrictions on how they could use the weapons.

It remains unclear if Ukraine used the US-supplied weapons in the strike.

<h2>US stops Ukraine from unleashing most formidable munition&nbsp;</h2>

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praised US President Joe Biden for allowing some strikes in Russian territory as a “step forward” which will help the army in defending the embattled Kharkiv region.

Some experts have raised questions over whether the new freedom will help Ukraine significantly bolster its ability to repel Russia's invasion.

However, as per military analysts that may not be the case because the United States has been firmly standing in not permitting Ukraine to use the most formidable munition against Russia, which is the long-range missiles called ATACMS. This missile is capable of hitting targets 300 kilometres (nearly 200 miles) away.

Ukraine is allowed to use only shorter-range missiles known as GMLRSl. These missiles have a range of around 70 kilometres (around 40 miles).

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin&nbsp;Netanyahu's office on Tuesday denied American media reports that he will address the US Congress on June 13, amid mounting pressure to agree to a ceasefire with Hamas.

Netanyahu's office told Israeli media the date of his speech to Congress had "not been finalised", but it would not be on June 13 because it interferes with a Jewish holiday. The date had been reported by Punchbowl News and Politico.

Speculation about the visit comes with&nbsp;Netanyahu&nbsp;facing intense criticism over the civilian death toll in the war in Gaza, which has ratcheted tension with President Joe Biden's administration.

Biden on Friday presented what he labelled an Israeli three-phase plan that would end the conflict, free all hostages and lead to the reconstruction of the devastated Palestinian territory without Hamas in power.

Netanyahu's office stressed that the war sparked by the October 7 attack would continue until all of Israel's "goals are achieved," including the destruction of Hamas's military and governing capabilities.

The four party leaders in the House and Senate asked&nbsp;Netanyahu&nbsp;last week to speak before a&nbsp;joint meeting of Congress in a letter voicing solidarity with Israel "in your struggle against terror, especially as Hamas continues to hold American and Israeli citizens captive."

Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called in March for Israel to hold new elections in a rare example of strident criticism from a senior American official of the country's handling of the war in Gaza.

The rebuke from Schumer, the highest-ranking elected Jewish American in history, came amid expressions of dismay from the White House over the death toll in the conflict, sparked by the October 7 attacks by Hamas militants.

Progressives including Vermont senator Bernie Sanders, an independent who votes with the Democrats, have condemned&nbsp;Netanyahu&nbsp;over his handling of the military response and vowed to snub any speech in the United States by the right-wing leader.

"It is a very sad day for our country that Prime Minister Benjamin&nbsp;Netanyahu&nbsp;has been invited - by leaders from both parties - to address a joint meeting of the United States Congress," Sanders said in a weekend statement.

The war broke out when Hamas militants attacked Israel, resulting in 1,194 deaths, mostly civilians, according to an AFP count based on official figures.

More than 36,470 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the war broke out, according to data provided by the&nbsp;health&nbsp;ministry of&nbsp;Hamas-run Gaza.

According to the Israeli military, 294 soldiers have been killed in the military campaign since the start of the ground offensive on October 27. House Speaker Mike Johnson's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Lok Sabha Election 2024 Results: India is counting votes of the mammoth 2024 general elections on Tuesday (June 4), with the final results set to reveal if Prime Minister Narendra Modi is clinching a historic third term or the opposition INDIA bloc is seeing a future different from one predicted by the exit polls.

In the early trends, the National Democratic alliance or NDA led by Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is&nbsp;leading the INDIA bloc on 238 seats as early trends on all&nbsp;543 seats show INDIA giving&nbsp;a tough fight to the ruling alliance.

The early trends have clearly contradicted the exit polls which painted a picture of Modi-led NDA clearly sweeping the elections with '400+' massive victory. With these kind of numbers, the ambitious target of NDA appears far from becoming a reality anytime sooner.

These early and shocking trends have led to volatile opening of India's stock market as the stock prices crashed and market continues to bubble in the heat of politics.

<h2>BJP to achieve the ambitious goal of '400-paar'?</h2>

Intense political campaigns&nbsp;dominated the seven-phase elections and the mood of the voters has been difficult to predict. As per three exit polls, a 400-plus - or 400 paar in Hindi - score has been predicted for the BJP-led NDA.&nbsp;

The BJP had launched a star-studded campaign with Modi at the helm, which focused on development, the economy and offered people a roadmap to 100 years of democracy.

The abrogation of Article 370 for Kashmir and the consecration of the Ayodhya Ram temple have also strengthened the support of NDA at the grassroots level.

The voting was held for 543 Lok Sabha seats in seven phases.

A political party or a coalition needs 272 votes to mark a majority.

<h2>BJP workers prepare for 'historic victory'</h2>

The mood of BJP workers is upbeat as the INDIA camp continues to dwell in cautious optimism.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge had earlier urged the bureaucracy to 'adhere to the constitution'.

Some volatility is expected in the stock market as the trends emerge for polls.

Deutsche Bank to process fiat deposits and withdrawals for Austrian exchange<o:p></o:p>

Deutsche Bank has announced a partnership with Vienna-based Bitpanda to process customer deposits and withdrawals of fiat currency (conventional money like Euros or Dollars), indicating a cautious embrace of cryptocurrencies. This alliance is a huge step forward for the crypto industry, which has struggled to secure traditional banking partnerships.<o:p></o:p>

Overcoming banking hurdles for crypto users<o:p></o:p>

The crypto business has long struggled to attract conventional banking partners, notably following the 2023 collapse of numerous US institutions with significant crypto clientele. Deutsche Bank's engagement represents a shift in mood, with Germany's largest bank providing Bitpanda customers in Germany with local bank account numbers to facilitate fiat cash payments. This reduces the need for crypto users to negotiate intricate deposit and withdrawal procedures.<o:p></o:p>

Deutsche prioritises compliance and risk management<o:p></o:p>

Deutsche Bank underlines its cautious approach to cryptocurrency. The bank emphasises its selected partnership standards, which include partners with comprehensive compliance systems, established regulatory frameworks, and a good risk management profile. Deutsche stresses that it would not directly handle cryptocurrency transfers, but will instead facilitate fiat deposits and withdrawals while assisting Bitpanda's treasury and payment operations.<o:p></o:p>

Strategic move for Deutsche Bank<o:p></o:p>

Deutsche Bank sees this cooperation as a strategic step to establish itself as a preferred banking partner for high-growth platforms in the virtual asset investment market. The bank already has a similar agreement with Hong Kong-based cryptocurrency exchange Hashkey, but the Bitpanda pact is its first in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. This strategic approach prepares Deutsche Bank to possibly benefit from the developing cryptocurrency sector while remaining focused on compliance and risk management.<o:p></o:p>

Elon Musk’s social media platform X has now officially permitted pornographic content on its platform, however, it added that all adult and violent posts will be blocked from users who are below the age of 18 or those who have not opted to see it.

My fellow Indians,

The biggest festival of democracy, the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, are concluding today in our nation, the Mother of Democracy. After a three-day spiritual journey in Kanniyakumari, I have just boarded the plane for Delhi. Through the day, Kashi and numerous other seats have been in the midst of voting.

My mind is filled with so many experiences and emotions... I feel a boundless flow of energy within myself. The 2024 Lok Sabha elections are the first in the Amrit Kaal. I began my campaign a few months ago from Meerut, the land of the First War of Independence of 1857. Since then, I have traversed across the length and breadth of our great nation. The final rally of these elections took me to Hoshiarpur in Punjab, the land of the great Gurus and a land associated with Sant Ravidas Ji. After that, I came to Kanniyakumari, at the feet of Maa Bharti.

It is natural that the fervour of the elections was echoing in my heart and mind. The multitude of faces seen in rallies and road shows came in front of my eyes. The blessings from our Nari Shakti...the trust, the affection, all of this was a very humbling experience. My eyes were getting moist... I entered into a 'sadhana' (meditative state). And then, the heated political debates, the attacks and counter-attacks, the voices and words of accusations which are so characteristic of an election...they all vanished into a void. A sense of detachment came to grow within me...my mind became completely detached from the external world.

Meditation becomes challenging amidst such huge responsibilities, but the land of Kanniyakumari and the inspiration of Swami Vivekananda made it effortless. As a candidate myself, I left my campaign in the hands of my beloved people of Kashi and came here.

I am also grateful God for instilling me with these values from birth which I have cherished and tried to live up to. I was also thinking about what Swami Vivekananda must have experienced during his meditation at this very place in Kanniyakumari! A part of my meditation was spent in a similar stream of thoughts.

Amidst this detachment, amidst the peace and silence, my mind was constantly thinking about the bright future of Bharat, the goals of Bharat. The rising sun at Kanniyakumari gave new heights to my thoughts, the vastness of the ocean expanded my ideas, and the expanse of the horizon continuously made me realize the unity, the Oneness, embedded in the depths of the universe. It seemed as if the observations and experiences undertaken in the lap of the Himalayas decades ago were being revived.

Friends,

Kanniyakumari has always been very close to my heart. The Vivekananda Rock Memorial in Kanniyakumari was built under the leadership of Shri Eknath Ranade ji. I had the opportunity to travel extensively with Eknath ji. During the construction of this Memorial, I had the opportunity to spend some time in Kanniyakumari as well.

From Kashmir to Kanniyakumari... this is a common identity that is deeply ingrained in the heart of every citizen of the country. This is the 'Shakti Peeth' (seat of Shakti) where Maa Shakti incarnated as Kanya Kumari. At this Southern tip, Maa Shakti performed penance and waited for Bhagwan Shiva, who was residing in the Himalayas at the northernmost parts of Bharat.

Kanniyakumari is the land of confluences. The sacred rivers of our country flow into different seas, and here, those very seas converge. And here, we witness another great confluence-the ideological confluence of Bharat! Here, we find the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, a grand statue of Saint Thiruvalluvar, Gandhi Mandapam, and Kamarajar Mani Mandapam. These streams of thought from these stalwarts converge here to form a confluence of national thought. This gives rise to great inspirations for nation-building. This land of Kanniyakumari gives an indelible message of unity, especially to any person who doubts Bharat's nationhood and the sense of unity.

The grand statue of Saint Thiruvalluvar in Kanniyakumari seems to be looking at the expanse of Maa Bharati from the sea. His work Thirukkural is one of the crown jewels of the beautiful Tamil language. It covers every aspect of life, inspiring us to give our best for ourselves and for the nation. It was my great fortune to pay my respects to such a great figure.

Friends,

Swami Vivekananda once said, 'Every nation has a message to deliver, a mission to fulfil, a destiny to reach.'
For thousands of years, Bharat has been moving forward with this sense of meaningful purpose. Bharat has been a cradle of ideas for thousands of years. We have never considered what we have acquired as our personal wealth or measured it purely by economic or material parameters. Therefore, 'Idam-na-mama' (this is not mine) has become an inherent and natural part of the character of Bharat.

Bharat's welfare benefits our planet's journey to progress as well. Take the freedom movement as an example. Bharat gained independence on August 15, 1947. At that time, many countries around the world were under colonial rule. Bharat's independence journey inspired and empowered many of those countries to achieve their own freedom. That same spirit was seen decades later when the world came face to face with the once in a century COVID-19 pandemic. When concerns were raised about the poor and developing countries, Bharat's successful efforts provided courage and assistance to many nations.

Today, Bharat's governance model has become an example for many countries around the world. Empowering 25 crore people to rise above poverty in just 10 years is unprecedented. Innovative practices such as Pro-People Good Governance, aspirational districts, and aspirational blocks are being discussed globally today. Our efforts, from empowering the poor to last-mile delivery, have inspired the world by prioritizing individuals standing at the last rung of society.

Bharat's Digital India campaign is now an example for the entire world, showing how we can use technology to empower the poor, bring transparency, and ensure their rights. Inexpensive data in Bharat is becoming a means of social equality by ensuring the reach of information and services to the poor. The whole world is witnessing and studying the democratization of technology, and major global institutions are advising many countries to adopt elements from our model.

Today, Bharat's progress and rise are not just a significant opportunity for Bharat alone, but also a historic opportunity for all our partner countries around the world. Since the success of the G-20, the world has been increasingly envisioning a bigger role for Bharat. Today, Bharat is being acknowledged as a strong and important voice of the Global South. The African Union has become a part of the G-20 group at the initiative of Bharat. This is going to be a crucial turning point for the future of African countries.

Friends,

The development trajectory of Bharat fills us with pride and glory, but at the same time, it also reminds the 140 crore citizens of their responsibilities. Now, without wasting a single moment, we must step forward towards greater duties and larger goals. We need to dream new dreams, convert them into reality and begin living those dreams.

We must see Bharat's development in a global context, and for this, it is essential that we understand Bharat's internal capabilities. We must acknowledge Bharat's strengths, nurture them, and utilize them for the benefit of the world. In today's global scenario, Bharat's strength as a youthful nation is an opportunity from which we must not look back.

The world of the 21st century is looking towards Bharat with many hopes. And we will need to make several changes to move forward in the global scenario. We also need to change our traditional thinking regarding reform. Bharat cannot limit reform to just economic reforms. We must move forward in every aspect of life towards the direction of reform. Our reforms should also align with the aspirations of a 'Viksit Bharat' (developed India) by 2047.

We must also understand that reform can never be a unidimensional process for any country. Therefore, I have laid out the vision of reform, perform, and transform for the country. The responsibility of reform lies with leadership. Based on that, our bureaucracy performs, and when the people join in with the spirit of Jan Bhagidari, we witness a transformation taking place.

We must make excellence the fundamental principle to make our country a 'Viksit Bharat'. We need to work quickly in all four directions: Speed, Scale, Scope, and Standards. Alongside manufacturing, we must also focus on quality and adhere to the mantra of 'zero defect-zero effect'.

Friends,

We should take pride in every moment that God has blessed us with birth in the land of Bharat. God has chosen us to serve Bharat and fulfil our role in our country's journey towards excellence. We must redefine our heritage in a modern way while embracing ancient values in a modern context.

As a nation, we also need to reassess outdated thinking and beliefs. We need to free our society from the pressure of professional pessimists. We must remember that freedom from negativity is the first step towards achieving success. Success blossoms in the lap of positivity.

My faith, devotion, and belief in the infinite and eternal power of Bharat are growing day by day. Over the past 10 years, I have seen this capability of Bharat grow even more and have experienced it firsthand. Just as we utilised the fourth and fifth decades of the 20th century to impart a new momentum to the freedom movement, we must lay the foundation for a 'Viksit Bharat' in these 25 years of the 21st century. The freedom struggle was a time that called for great sacrifices. The present times call for great and sustained contributions from everyone.

Swami Vivekananda had said in 1897 that we must dedicate the next 50 years solely for the nation. Exactly 50 years after this call, Bharat gained independence in 1947. Today, we have the same golden opportunity. Let's dedicate the next 25 years solely for the nation. Our efforts will create a strong foundation for the coming generations and the coming centuries, taking Bharat to new heights. Looking at the energy and enthusiasm of the country, I can say that the goal is not far away now. Let us take swift steps...let us come together and create a Viksit Bharat.

PM Modi hails India's progress in spiritual letter following 45-hour meditation in Kanniyakumari

OPEC+ confirmed on Sunday that it will prolong its significant oil supply cutbacks well into 2025. The decision comes as a coalition of oil-producing nations seeks to stabilise the market in the face of slow demand growth, rising interest rates, and increased competition from US producers. Brent crude oil prices are currently around $80 per barrel, which is insufficient to balance many OPEC+ nations' budgets.<o:p></o:p>

Deep cuts to persist amid market pressures<o:p></o:p>

The Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies, led by Russia, known collectively as OPEC+, are sustaining severe output cutbacks implemented in late 2022. The group, which accounts for a significant portion of world oil supply, is now reducing output by 5.86 million barrels per day (bpd), which equates to approximately 5.7 per cent of total demand. These cutbacks include 3.66 million bpd, which is expected to expire at the end of 2024, as well as an extra 2.2 million bpd of voluntary reduction by eight members, which will expire in June 2024.<o:p></o:p>

OPEC+ has resolved to extend the 3.66 million bpd cuts until the end of 2025, as well as the voluntary reduction of 2.2 million bpd until September 2024. The latter will be phased out progressively between October 2024 and September 2025.<o:p></o:p>

Challenges and strategic adjustments<o:p></o:p>

Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman emphasised the importance of patience, saying, "We are waiting for interest rates to fall and a better path for economic growth...not pockets of growth here and there." OPEC expects demand for its crude to average 43.65 million bpd in the second half of 2024, implying a stock depletion if production maintains at the April rate of 41.02 million bpd. However, this drawdown will decrease as voluntary reductions are phased out beginning in October.<o:p></o:p>

The International Energy Agency (IEA), which represents major consumers, predicts that demand for OPEC+ oil will fall to 41.9 million barrels per day in 2024. According to Amrita Sen, co-founder of Energy Aspects, "The deal should allay market fears of OPEC+ adding back barrels at a time when demand concerns are still rife."<o:p></o:p>

Negotiations and new production targets<o:p></o:p>

In an unexpected turn of events, OPEC+ postponed negotiations on each member's specific capacity targets until November 2025. The UAE, which has lobbied for a greater production quota, has achieved a new objective that allows it to increase output by 0.3 million bpd from its existing 2.9 million bpd.<o:p></o:p>

The deal's complexity necessitated substantial preparation, with Prince Abdulaziz conducting conversations behind the scenes. Even though most discussions are held online, certain key ministers convened in Riyadh on Sunday. Algeria, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Oman, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates are among the nations making voluntary reductions.<o:p></o:p>

Looking Ahead<o:p></o:p>

This accord, reached in less than four hours of negotiations on Sunday, demonstrates the group's unity and strategic acumen. Prince Abdulaziz's leadership was critical in securing this agreement, which attempts to calm markets and maintain stability in the face of global economic uncertainty. The next OPEC+ meeting is set for December 1, 2024.<o:p></o:p>

“We are feeling&nbsp;that the people of America sympathise with us and the NYPD [are] here with us. “It’s a really good feeling, that it’s very safe here," Sharabi said.&nbsp;

Israel was celebrated by people even though a tense climate of antisemitism loomed over the five boroughs.&nbsp;

“I came out to support my dear and beloved country and to show that we’re never going to back down,” said Jacob, who is a 21-year-old student at the Staten Island Hebrew Academy.

“It’s horrific,” he stated while speaking about antisemitism in the city. “You gotta look over your shoulder and live in fear," he added.

Meanwhile, Brooklyn resident Rita Malikima said that the city's mood scares her, however, she felt she needed to show up at the parade for fellow Jews.

The protester, who was wearing a black shirt and black mask and carrying a Palestinian flag in the form of a cape, was among a group of anti-Israel demonstrators who had a face-off with pro-Israeli New Yorkers close to the parade route. The Israel Day Parade, which was carried out this year in New York, saw the participation of various family members of hostages who were kidnapped on October 7 by Hamas. During the parade, an Israeli supporter suddenly came face-to-face with the masked man. Nvidia unveils next-gen AI chip platform Rubin, set for 2026 release

The United States government says that they had "every expectation" from Israel that it will accept a ceasefire proposal which will begin with a six-week halt of hostilities in Gaza if Hamas agrees to the deal, said National Security Council spokesman John Kirby.

US spokesperson Kirby made the remarks at a time when two far-right Israeli ministers threatened to topple Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition government.

Last week, US President Joe Biden laid out the three-part ceasefire plan which will ensure a "surge" of humanitarian aid and will also enable the exchange of hostages and Palestinian prisoners before the war is brought to a permanent end.&nbsp;

However, the ceasefire proposal had to face vocal opposition from a few members of Israel's government.

In an interview on ABC News’s “This Week" on Sunday morning (June 2), Kirby said, “We have every expectation that if Hamas agrees to the proposal — as was transmitted to them, an Israeli proposal — that Israel would say ‘Yes'."

"We're waiting for an official response from Hamas," Kirby said and added the US believe that both sides will agree to start the first phase of the plan "as soon as possible".

He added that in the initial six-week pause in the war, the "two sides would sit down and try to negotiate what phase two could look like, and when that could begin".&nbsp;

Biden had earlier appealed to Hamas to accept the offer and the Israeli government to “stand behind it.”

He had said that the ceasefire plan would “bring all the hostages home, ensure Israel’s security, create a better day after in Gaza without Hamas in power, and set the stage for a political settlement that provides a better future for Israelis and Palestinians alike.” Then, he said the ceasefire will become "the cessation of hostilities, permanently".&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Blinken discussed the proposed Gaza ceasefire plan with the top Israeli officials on Sunday (June 2), said the State Department.

As per the statement, Blinken held talks with both Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant and War Cabinet Minister Benny Gantz. In the two calls, the US official "commended" Israel for the proposal, and said the onus was on Hamas to agree.

<h2>Israeli ministers threaten to topple Netanyahu's government</h2>

Two far-right Israeli ministers on Saturday (June 1) said that they would quit and topple the country's governing coalition if Netanyahu gave a nod to the deal.&nbsp;

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir clearly opposed finalising any deal before destroying Hamas.

Taking to social media, Smotrich said that he had “made it clear” to the prime minister that he would not “be part of a government that will agree to the proposed outline and end the war without destroying Hamas and returning all the hostages.”

Smotrich said that the fighting must continue till the “destruction of Hamas and the return of all the hostages,” as well as the “creation of a completely different security reality in Gaza and Lebanon.”

Meanwhile, National Security Minister Ben Gvir called the deal “reckless” and “a victory for terrorism".&nbsp;

“If the prime minister implements the reckless deal under the conditions published today, which mean the end of the war and the giving up on the elimination of Hamas, Otzma Yehudit will dissolve the government,” the minister said.&nbsp;

A strong magnitude 5.9 earthquake on Monday shook the area of central&nbsp;Japan&nbsp;that was hit by a devastating jolt in January, the&nbsp;Japan&nbsp;Meteorological Agency (JMA) said, but there was no threat of a tsunami.

Three houses collapsed but there were no reports of deaths or injuries, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency said after the shallow quake struck the Noto Peninsula at 6:31 am (2131 GMT Sunday).

Public broadcaster NHK showed footage of at least one home thrown askew with badly damaged walls and the tiled roof of part of the building having crashed to the ground.

No abnormalities were detected at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa or Shika nuclear plants in the region on the Sea of&nbsp;Japan&nbsp;coast,&nbsp;Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority said.

"The area has been seismically active for more than three years, including the magnitude 7.6 earthquake on January 1 this year. That is expected to continue for the foreseeable future, so please continue to exercise caution," the JMA said.

The agency also warned of landslides and falling rocks in the region, especially after rain or further quakes.

Monday's jolt triggered smartphone warning alarms and was followed by several smaller aftershocks.

On New Year's Day, at least 260 people died after a massive earthquake hit the peninsula, including 30 "quake-linked" deaths as well as those killed directly in the disaster.

The January 1 quake and its aftershocks toppled buildings, caused fires and knocked out infrastructure at a time when families were celebrating the new year.

The JMA said Monday's quake was related to the January one, with a similar epicentre and seismic mechanism.
