Microsoft on Wednesday released a statement saying that Chinese state-linked hackers, in a cyberespionage campaign, secretly accessed email accounts at around 25 organisations which also included government agencies.

In an interview with ABC television, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said that the United States had caught a violation of federal government accounts "fairly rapidly" and had managed to contain further infringements.

The hacking group, which Microsoft anointed Storm-0558, falsified digital authentication tokens to access webmail accounts running on the firm's Outlook service, Microsoft said in a statement that its firm released on its website.

The activity began in the month of May.

"As with any observed nation-state actor activity, Microsoft has contacted all targeted or compromised organizations directly via their tenant admins and provided them with important information to help them investigate and respond," the statement added.

Microsoft, in its statement, did not specify as to which organisations or governments had been affected, but it added that the hacking group involved primarily targets entities in Western Europe.

White House National Security Council spokesman Adam Hodge said an intrusion in Microsoft's cloud security had "affected unclassified systems", without elaborating.

"Officials immediately contacted Microsoft to find the source and vulnerability in their cloud service," he added.

A 6-year-old girl from Miami bravely fought off a kidnapper outside her apartment, said the police. Ah’lyric and her siblings were playing in the courtyard of their complex when the incident took place last week on Thursday.&nbsp;

While the other kids went inside, Ah’lyric noticed a white Range Rover parked near her apartment. She stayed on the staircase when a man approached and grabbed her arm. The suspect was later identified as 32-year-old Leonardo Venegas.

In a conversation with CBS Miami, she said, "There was a kidnapper walking to the back where I was sitting. He pulled me. He picked me up. He started running with me."

"She's really brave," said the girl's mother, Teshia McGill. "She fought him off."

"Then I bit him," said the girl. "Then he slapped me and threw me on the floor."

"(We're) thankful that that six-year-old little girl had a great memory," CBS Miami quoted Miami police officer Kiara Delva as saying. "She was able to give a great description of the suspect involved, which helped our tactical robbery detectives to locate the vehicle. Very brave - she fought for her safety."

As per local media reports, the surveillance footage showed the man fleeing the scene soon after.

The accused was then taken into custody after a licence plate reader captured the car's tag.&nbsp;

He reportedly told the investigators that he was on the lookout to buy houses in the area. He further asserted that he began running after he heard someone screaming. But on being asked about his encounter with the girl, he said that he wanted an attorney.

"This is a case that has us extremely worried, concerned, something that's not very common," Miami Police Capt. Freddie Cruz said. "Luckily we were able to apprehend this individual."

“If you're going to be playing outside, which is a wonderful thing, please, try to play in groups, try to have an adult present, some sort of supervision, know where your children or if you're a guardian, know where they are at,” Freddie said offering tips to keep kids safe.

He further said that the police are probing to find out if there were more victims.

"This is obviously something very disturbing, again, something that's not very common in the city of Miami," he said.

The water level in Yamuna rose to its highest-ever mark on Wednesday, breaking a 45-year-old record, said officials.

As per Delhi Flood Control Department officials, the river swelled to 207.48 metres at 12 noon on Wednesday (12 July) and reached 207.55 metres at 1:00 pm.

At 3 pm, it was recorded at 207.66 metres, according to Central Water Commission.

As per what the data showed, the water level was rising in the river since morning. It&nbsp;is expected to&nbsp;rise further, an official of the irrigation and flood control department said. Earlier it was recorded at 207.25 metres at Old Railway Bridge at 8 am on July 12.

Delhi PWD minister Atishi said the government is fully prepared to tackle any situation. "We are regularly conducting evacuations near the Yamuna River. Several embankments have been installed to prevent the breach of water," the minister said.

The water in Yamuna had breached the danger-level mark on Sunday.&nbsp;

According to the officials, the previous record for the highest level of water in the river was 207.49 metres in the year 1978.

In the year 2013, the water level reached 207.33 metres.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal called an emergency meeting after the rise in the water level of Yamuna posed a threat of floods in the city.

The meeting is scheduled to be held at the Delhi Secretariat where senior officers of all departments concerned will be present, said a Delhi government official.

The Delhi CM also urged the Centre to intervene and ensure that levels of the Yamuna, flowing at an all-time high of 207.55 metres, don't rise further.

Sharing an update on Yamuna&nbsp;water levels, Kejriwal said on Twitter, "Central Water Commission predicts 207.72-meter water level in Yamuna tonite. Not good news for Delhi."

"There have been no rains in Delhi last 2 days, however, levels of Yamuna are rising due to abnormally high volumes of water being released by Haryana at Hathnikund barrage. Urge Centre to intervene and ensure that levels in Yamuna don't rise further. Highest Flood Level 207.49m (in 1978). Current Level 207.55m."

The Delhi Police on Wednesday imposed prohibitory measures under CrPC section 144 in the flood-prone areas of the city.

The CrPC's section 144 prevents unlawful assembly of four or more persons and public movement in groups.

The Delhi Disaster Management Authority issued an advisory urging people to shift to safer places and warning them against passing through low-lying areas.

"As the flood situation persisted in the Yamuna river, people should stay away from power lines and reach out to the helpline 1077 in case of any need," the advisory said.

According to the officials, Garhi Mandu village near the Signature Bridge in Wazirabad has been submerged.&nbsp;

They said that the majority of the residents of the area have been evacuated and moved to safer places and the remaining are being rescued using boats.

The state WAM news agency on Sunday said that the accused, who is a UAE resident, was condemned for publishing "propaganda that stirs up the public opinion and harms the public interest" on the internet.

The Federal Prosecution for Combating Rumours and Cybercrimes had ordered his detention and pending probes. He was also charged with posting content that "insults the Emirati society".

As per WAM reports, the accused, who hails from&nbsp;Asia, was filmed in traditional Emirati robes as he entered a luxury car showroom with two assistants carrying a large tray of cash.

He then speaks in English with a Gulf Arab accent and asks for the highest-priced car. Further rejecting the car he says that 2.2 million dirhams (nearly $600,000), it's not expensive enough.&nbsp;

"I need expensive, brother," he says, tossing wads of cash to the store assistants to buy coffee, and ordering four costly cars including a Rolls-Royce.

"The video reveals impudence and lack of appreciation of the value of money, in a manner that promotes a wrong and offensive mental image of Emirati citizens and ridicules them", the WAM report said.

Deputy commander of Russia's military operations in Ukraine, General Sergei Surovikin, who has not been seen in public since the mutiny by mercenary group Wagner, is currently 'resting', said a lawmaker from the ruling party on Wednesday.

As per Reuters reports, Andrei Kartapolov, head of the State Duma Defence Committee, is heard saying in a video posted on social media: "Surovikin is currently resting. (He is) not available for now."

Surovikin, who is also called 'General Armageddon' by the Russian press for his assertive strategies in the Syria conflict, was last seen publicly when he issued an appeal via a video urging the mercenary group to halt the mutiny while it was underway.

As per reports, Surovikin had good relations with Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin, who appreciated the general while regularly criticising Moscow's military leadership, especially Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov, over their handling of the war in Ukraine.

As per a New York Times report based on a U.S. intelligence briefing, Surovikin had prior knowledge of the rebellion and that Russian authorities were probing if he was associated with it or not.

According to the news agency Reuters, Russian and international media, last month, reported that Surovikin had been arrested, but there has been no official confirmation of that, and the Kremlin has declined to answer questions about him.&nbsp;

<h2>Putin met Wagner chief five days after failed coup attempt: Kremlin</h2>

Russian President Vladimir Putin met the Wagner mercenary group’s chief Yevgeny Prigozhin five days after the failed coup attempt, the Kremlin said on Monday.

Briefing the reporters, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the meeting took place on June 29, in which 35 people were invited, including unit commanders. He further said that the meeting lasted three hours.

Putin “gave his assessment of the events of June 24,” Peskov said, referring to the date of the Wagner Group’s failed uprising. He added that Putin also "listened to accounts given by (Wagner) commanders".

The Wagner commanders told Putin they were his soldiers and would continue to fight for him.

The development comes following speculations that Prigozhin wasn't exiled to Belarus at all as part of the peace deal brokered by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.

Last week, Lukashenko told reporters that it was unclear if the Wagner fighters would come to Belarus after he previously offered them a desert military base.

“As for Prigozhin, he's in St Petersburg. He is not on the territory of Belarus," he said.

Responding to Lukashenko's remarks, the Kremlin said it was "not following" Prigozhin's movements.

"No, we do not follow his movements, we have neither the ability nor the desire to do so," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

<h2>Cheetah's death due to natural occurrence in animals, says Forest Minister</h2>

Madhya Pradesh Forest Minister Vijay Shah earlier today released a statement saying that the recent death of a&nbsp;cheetah in the state was due to a natural occurrence in animals.

"I have spoken to the authorities as well and this is a natural occurrence in animals.&nbsp;A team of experts, including foreign experts, is monitoring each cheetah," said Shah.

On Monday, another cheetah named Tejas, which was brought to Madhya Pradesh, died due to wounds.

As per an official statement, the monitoring team saw the injury marks on the upper part of the neck of male cheetah Tejas at around 11 am.&nbsp;

“Wildlife doctors went to the spot and inspected Tejas Cheetah and prima facie found the wounds serious. After obtaining permission to treat Tejas, the team of doctors left for Maukar with preparations,” it said.

Tejas was found dead at the spot around 2 pm. The wounds sustained by the cheetah are now being investigated. It further said that the cause of the death can be ascertained after the post-mortem.

PM Narendra Modi, in an effort to revive the extinct species in India, had last year released eight cheetahs (5 females and 3 males) brought from Namibia in the Kuno National Park on the occasion of his birthday on September 17.&nbsp;

Another 12 cheetahs were brought from South Africa in February this year.

Former CM Kamal Nath claims cheetahs dying because of BJP, says 'neither women nor animals safe in MP'

The crisis in Myanmar dominated the talks at ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting on Tuesday. As per reports, the regional bloc was divided over how or whether to reengage with the coup-wracked country's ruling junta.

The diplomat, on condition of anonymity, said that ASEAN members were making "extra efforts" before the meeting, a prelude to a leaders' summit in September, to unite the group around the Myanmar issue, as per AFP reports.

The official was "not too optimistic" that would happen given that a "few members have different perspectives".

Though Myanmar remains an ASEAN member but has been banned from participating in high-level meetings over the junta's failure to enforce a five-point plan that was agreed on two years ago to settle the crisis.

Philippine Foreign Minister Enrique Manalo told reporters on the meeting's sidelines the Thailand talks would be discussed but members were "going to talk about Myanmar again".

"Yes, we'd like to see it, meaning all ASEAN members," his Thai counterpart Don Pramudwinai said, without specifying if he meant the junta.

"Our differences should not be an excuse for us to abandon pressing human rights issues in our own region," Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said in remarks while opening a session,&nbsp;appearing to take aim at divisions within the bloc.

"It is hoped there will be a clearer implementation plan on what ASEAN will do going forward," Lina Alexandra of Jakarta-based think tank,&nbsp;Centre for Strategic and International Studies, told AFP.

An ASEAN-plus-three ministerial meeting with Japan, South Korea and China will take place on Thursday, ahead of the ASEAN Regional Forum and an 18-nation East Asia Summit foreign ministers' meeting on Friday, which will also include Washington and Beijing.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is expected to attend the latter.

"We cannot be truly safe with nuclear weapons in our region," Indonesian FM Marsudi told ministers in her opening remarks.&nbsp;

"With nuclear weapons, we are only one miscalculation away from apocalypse and global catastrophe."&nbsp;

Crisis in Myanmar dominates talks at ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting

A Melbourne woman, aged 55, who was imprisoned for keeping an Indian-origin Tamil woman as a slave for eight years, has now been sentenced to an additional two-and-a-half years for threatening the victim before she gave proof in the criminal trial, said the police, as per news agency PTI.

The police, on Saturday, released a statement saying that Kumuthini Kannan and her husband Kandasamy Kannan were earlier convicted and sentenced for enslaving the victim, in her 60s, in their Mount Waverley home between the years 2007 and 2015.

The statement said that Kumuthini pleaded guilty to the offence of twisting the course of justice during an Australian Federal Police (AFP) slavery probe and was sentenced on July 7 in the County Court of Victoria to an additional two years and six months imprisonment.

The judge ordered that the sentence would begin 18 months before the completion of the sentence she was currently facing for the slavery offences.

Earlier, Kumuthini was sentenced to eight years in prison with a non-parole period of four years for the slavery offences.

She will be eligible for parole in January 2026. Her husband was sentenced to six years in prison, with a non-parole period of three years.

They were sentenced and imprisoned in the year 2021 after the police probe established the couple had kept the victim as a slave for eight years.

<h2>Victim was threatened to not give evidence during the court proceeding</h2>

The federal police had charged the couple in June 2016 with slavery crimes and in 2020, while awaiting trial, Kumuthini threatened the victim and cautioned her not to give proof during the court proceedings.

As per Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the victim was told: "When you go to court, say nothing. Say you don't remember. Tell the judge you are suffering from mental illness."

"Don't repeat what you are saying. If you do, you will lose everything.

"If you listen to the police, you'll never be able to leave this country, you'll be here until you perish until you die."

In February 2020, the AFP Human Trafficking Team charged the woman with attempting to twist the course of justice, contrary to Section 43 of the Crimes Act 1914 (Cth), and the matter was heard separately from the slavery proceedings.

As per local media reports, the exploitation of the elderly woman took place because her family was in India. Also, she did not speak English and her passport was taken away by the Kannans. &nbsp;

On Tuesday (July 12), a trial opened over New Zealand's 2019 White Island volcanic eruption. The eruption and subsequent explosion had engulfed tourists, leading to deaths of 22 people and leaving several others with burns.

nearly 50 tourists, mostly from Australia, were vacationing on White Island, also known as Whakaari, when burning ash and steam exploded from a volcanic vent in December 2019. The accident off the coast of the country's North Island prompted a massive rescue and medical operation.

"This volcano eruption involved a massive explosion," prosecution barrister Kristy McDonald told Auckland District Court.

It resulted in a flow of "burning hot ash, scalding hot sea, poisonous volcanic ashes and rocks projected across the crater floor," she added.

"The pyroclastic current engulfed all those who were on the volcano with estimates of speeds of approximately 60 kilometres per hour," AFP news agency quoted her as saying.

Six parties, including two tour companies and the island's owners, Whakaari Management Limited, have been charged with violation of health and safety regulations that led to the horrific incident. They deny any wrongdoing.

McDonald said the family owners of the island were making around NZ$1 million (US$620,000) a year before disaster struck.&nbsp;

"They profited from every single tourist taken to Whakaari," she told the court.

<h2>Island's management failed to make adequate risk assessments</h2>

McDonald argued that though the island's management denied any wrongdoing, it failed to make necessary risk assessments, provide personal protective equipment or ensure evacuation routes.

"The end result was that tourists and workers went to the crater of an active volcano without being properly advised of the risks," McDonald added.

According to the news agency AFP, the video footage of the incident played in the court showed people trying to flee a cloud of volcanic ash.

In one video clip, the guide spotted the eruption and shouted at the tourists to "move, quick" back to their boat. Some struggled in their desperation to flee.

The charges don't carry the threat of prison time but the parties, if found guilty, could face fines of up to NZ$1.5 million.

The trial is expected to last for several weeks.

On Friday, another six firms already pleaded guilty to health and safety charges, including three helicopter tour operators that entered 11th-hour pleas.

Six parties, including two tour companies and the island's owners, Whakaari Management Limited, have been charged with violation of health and safety regulations that led to the horrific incident. They deny any wrongdoing. McDonald said the family owners of the island were making around NZ$1 million (US$620,000) a year before disaster struck. "They profited from every single tourist taken to Whakaari," she told the court. "The end result was that tourists and workers went to the crater of an active volcano without being properly advised of the risks," McDonald added. According to the news agency AFP, the video footage of the incident played in the court showed people trying to flee a cloud of volcanic ash. In one video clip, the guide spotted the eruption and shouted at the tourists to "move, quick" back to their boat. Some struggled in their desperation to flee. The charges don't carry the threat of prison time but the parties, if found guilty, could face fines of up to NZ$1.5 million. The trial is expected to last for several weeks. On Friday, another six firms already pleaded guilty to health and safety charges, including three helicopter tour operators that entered 11th-hour pleas. Citing sources, the report revealed that the delegations who have come to India from the United Kingdom have faced pressure from New Delhi to extradite Mallya and Nirav Modi, time and again.

Senior advocate Harish Salve, in a recent interview with Times Now, said that the British always complain that the first question that PM Modi would ask in any interview was linked to the extradition proceedings of Mallya and Nirav Modi.

"PM Modi has strongly told the UK government that you can’t be a trade partner and a home for fugitives at the same time," Salve said.

Chairman of the now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines, Vijay Mallya&nbsp;was ordered to be extradited by the British judiciary in the year 2019 and is yet to be sent to India. Likewise, diamantaire Nirav Modi has been held in custody at south London's Wandsworth prison since he was arrested in 2019.

India and the United Kingdom, in the year 1992, had signed an extradition treaty. The following year it was ratified and has been in force ever since.

Last year, in the month of December, fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi's plea to move the United Kingdom's Supreme Court against his extradition to India on charges of fraud and money laundering was denied.

Nirav had lost the bid to take his fight against extradition to India on charges of fraud and money laundering to the United Kingdom's Supreme Court. Nirav Modi, who is the prime accused in the Rs 13,500 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam, had fled India.

He lost his appeal after he moved the High Court in London against his extradition on mental health grounds.

Earlier, in the month of March, UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, without mentioning the names of fugitive economic offenders, had said that the British judicial system is independent of the government.

Cleverly said in a conversation with news agency ANI, "The legal process in the UK, just as it is in India, is independent of the government. We always want to see the machinery of the justice system working promptly but those are the decisions of the British Judicial system."&nbsp;
