A US judge has ordered Elon Musk to comply with a subpoena to answer questions from regulators about his purchases of Twitter shares last year.

The order comes after Musk, who beefed up his stake in Twitter -- now called X -- before buying the company for $44 billion, did not show up for a scheduled deposition in September with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), according to a legal filing.

"The court grants the SEC's application to enforce the subpoena," the decision by California judge Laurel Beeler, published on Saturday and seen by AFP, stated.&nbsp;

The billionaire boss and the SEC now have a week to agree on a time and place for Musk to give testimony, it added.

The SEC investigation pertains to all of Musk's purchases of Twitter stock in 2022 as well as his statements and filings with market regulators, court documents stated.

Musk took part in two half-day depositions in July with the SEC, which told the court it has since received "thousands of documents" that have raised questions they want him to answer.

Musk's objections to the latest deposition included an accusation that the SEC is using its power to "harass" him, the commission said in the filing.

"The SEC has already taken Mr. Musk's testimony multiple times in this misguided investigation -- enough is enough," Musk attorney Alex Spiro said in reply to an AFP inquiry.

But the SEC had argued that "Musk's ongoing refusal to comply with the SEC's administrative subpoena is hindering and delaying the SEC staff's investigation to determine whether violations of the federal securities laws have occurred," according to court documents.

Musk's role at the social network has been marked by numerous controversies and led to various legal actions on the part of investors, former employees and companies that had contracts with Twitter.&nbsp;

Shareholders, for example, have filed a lawsuit against Musk, accusing him of disclosing his five percent stake in Twitter too late, after the deadline set by the SEC.

North Korea, in a bid to bring about a "qualitative change" in its defence capabilities, on Monday (Feb 12) said that it has developed a new ballistic control system for a multiple rocket launcher.

Pyongyang's Academy of Defense Science successfully carried out a "ballistic control test firing of 240-mm calibre multiple rocket launcher shells" on Saturday (Feb 10) to develop a "controllable shell and ballistic control system" for the launcher, reported state news agency KCNA.

Earlier, in January, the North fired multiple cruise missiles near two South Korean border islands which prompted the South to launch a live-fire drill and release evacuation orders for the residents.

The South had then issued a stern warning stating that the nuclear action around the Korean Peninsula would lead to the escalation of tensions.

Seoul's military had said that "the repeated artillery fire within the prohibited hostile act zone by North Korea poses a threat to the peace on the Korean Peninsula and escalates tensions".

"North Korea, following its claim of the complete nullification of the 'September 19 Military Agreement', continues to threaten our citizens with ongoing artillery fire within the prohibited hostile act zone," the JCS said, referring to the 2018 deal.&nbsp;

"In response, our military will take appropriate measures," it said.

North Korea develops new control system for multiple rocket launcher

Retirement fund body EPFO on Saturday fixed a three-year-high interest rate of 8.25 per cent on employees' provident fund (EPF) deposits for 2023-24.

In March 2023, the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) had increased the interest rate on EPF marginally to 8.15 per cent for 2022-23 from 8.10 per cent in 2021-22.

In March 2022, EPFO had lowered the interest on EPF for 2021-22 to an over four-decade low of 8.1 per cent for its over six crore subscribers, from 8.5 per cent in 2020-21. This was the lowest since 1977-78, when the EPF interest rate stood at 8 per cent.

"The EPFO's apex decision-making body Central Board of Trustees (CBT) has decided to provide 8.25 per cent rate of interest on EPF for 2023-24 at its meeting on Saturday,” a source said.

The 8.5 per cent interest rate on EPF deposits for 2020-21 was decided by CBT in March 2021. 
 
After the CBT's decision, the interest rate on EPF deposits for 2023-24 will be sent to the Ministry of Finance for concurrence.

After the government's ratification, the interest rate on EPF for 2023-24 will be credited into accounts of over six crore subscribers of EPFO.

EPFO provides the rate of interest only after it is ratified by the government through the finance ministry.

In March 2020, EPFO had lowered the interest rate on provident fund deposits to a seven-year low of 8.5 per cent for 2019-20, from 8.65 per cent provided for 2018-19.

EPFO had provided 8.65 per cent interest rate to its subscribers in 2016-17 and 8.55 per cent in 2017-18. The rate of interest was slightly higher at 8.8 per cent in 2015-16.

The Indian Coast Guard Ship Vikram on Monday (Feb 12) rescued a fishing boat with 11 crew members of IFB King (IND-TN-12-MM-6466) on board, off the coast of Minicoy Island in the Arabian Sea.

The ones aboard the boat were stranded at high seas due to engine failure since February 5.&nbsp;

The vessel was safely towed from 280 nautical miles west of Minicoy Island and handed over to ICGS Minicoy, said the official.

The collaborative efforts with the Fisheries Department ensured the boat's shelter at Minicoy Harbour, the official further added.

Earlier, on Dec 23, a missile strike damaged MV Chem Pluto off India's coast, which was carrying crude oil and was heading towards Mangalore from a port in Saudi Arabia.&nbsp;

The Indian Navy, responding to the missile strike incident that occurred in the Arabian Sea on MT Chem Pluto on Saturday (Dec 23), diverted a maritime patrol aircraft operating in the area while undertaking routine surveillance.&nbsp;

It also diverted the Indian naval ship Mormugao to assess the situation and provide assistance to MT Chem Pluto.

"The naval maritime patrol aircraft overflew MT Chem Pluto at 1315 h on 23 Dec and established contact with the crew. The crew reported all 22 crew members to be safe and that the fire had been extinguished. Navy also communicated details of the developing situation to all Indian maritime agencies for rendering necessary assistance," the Indian Navy said in a statement.

"Indian Naval Ship Mormugao communicated with MT Chem Pluto at 1930 h on 23 Dec 23 to ascertain if any assistance was required. CGS Vikram, also present at the scene, was directed to escort the vessel to Mumbai. Naval Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialist will be embarking MV Chem Pluto on arrival at Mumbai to sanitise the vessel and undertake further investigation," it further said in a statement.

According to the latest seat figures available at the time of filing this report, the independent candidates (most of them backed by Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf) have won about 100 seats, followed by Nawaz Sharif's PML (N) with 54 seats and Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari's PPP's 17 seats.&nbsp;

On Friday evening, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif of PML (N) first laid claim to power and said efforts have already begun for an alliance with PPP and others.

On Saturday, Pakistani media reported that the PPP and the PML (N) have agreed to form an alliance.

Pakistan Elections: Candidate Mohsin Dawar injured in shooting incident in North Waziristan

A missile on Monday (Feb 12) reportedly hit a vessel off Yemen's southern coast at the time the ship was transiting the strategic Bab al-Mandeb strait, said&nbsp;security agencies.

The incident took place before 0400 local time (0100 GMT) in the area where Yemen's Houthi rebel group, in recent months, has launched repeated attacks targeting Red Sea shipping, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency said in its report.

"The crew are reported safe and the vessel is proceeding to the next port of call," UKMTO said.&nbsp;

Another security organisation, Ambrey, said that the Marshall Islands-flagged, Greece-owned bulk carrier "was targeted by missiles in two separate incidents" within 20 minutes and "was reportedly hit and sustained physical damage on the starboard side".&nbsp;

According to Ambrey, the vessel had a private armed security team on board.

The Iran-backed Houthis have been launching targetted missile strikes at the Red Sea shipping vessels for months which the group says are in solidarity with Palestinians and Gaza amid the Israel-Hamas war.

The owner of the group and operator of the bulk carrier, that was targeted on Monday (Feb 12), regularly trades cargo with Iran, "so this was assessed to be the likely destination", said Ambrey.

"The group owner of the bulker was also listed on the US stock market index NASDAQ, which was identified as the likely reason for the attack," it said.&nbsp;

Yemen's Houthi rebels released a statement on Monday claiming&nbsp;an attack against a US ship in the Red Sea with a "number of suitable naval missiles".

"The naval forces of the Yemeni Armed Forces targeted the American ship Star Iris in the Red Sea with a number of suitable naval missiles, and the strikes were accurate and direct," Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree said in a speech on Monday.

India: Nitish Kumar's JD(U) expresses confidence in winning trust vote ahead of crucial floor test

Six people, including the group chief executive of Nigeria's Access Bank, which is also one of the largest lenders of the African country, lost their lives in a helicopter crash in Southern California&nbsp;on Friday (Feb 9), said the authorities.

The US Federal Aviation Administration released a statement saying that six people were aboard the aircraft when it crashed at around 10 pm near Nipton, California.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, director general of the World Trade Organization, in a post on social media platform X, confirmed that the incident had claimed the life of Access Bank Group CEO Herbert Wigwe, along with that of Nigerian Exchange Group's former Chairman Abimbola Ogunbanjo.

"Terribly saddened by the news of the terrible loss of Herbert Wigwe, Group CEO Access Bank, his wife and son as well as Bimbo Ogunbanjo in a helicopter crash," Okonjo-Iweala said on X.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement that the site of the helicopter crash was determined to be east of the 15-Freeway, near Halloran Springs Road.

The number of people killed by a landslide in the southern Philippines has risen to 37, an official said on Sunday, as rescue workers continued to dig through mud even as hope of finding more survivors dimmed.

The landslide struck on Tuesday night outside a gold mine in Maco town in the province of Davao de Oro, burying homes and vehicles ferrying employees to the site operated by Apex Mining.

Edward Macapili, an official of Davao de Oro province, said 37 people had died from the landslide, in the latest update after two more bodies were found on Sunday.

However, the tally of missing people was revised down to 63 from 77, while there were 32 injured. Officials did not immediately cite a reason for the revision.

Macapili said over 300 people were involved in the rescue, but operations were being hampered by heavy rain, thick mud and the threat of further landslides. Rescue work resumed on Sunday morning, Macapili said.

Asked if there were still survivors, Macapili said it was already "unlikely", but the search would continue.

"The rescue team is doing its best, even if it's very difficult," Macapili said by phone.
