Growing up in Santa Monica, California, Fonda said she loves the ocean and was at the beach every day that it was warm enough. And she said she has been scuba diving at the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, in the Galapagos in Ecuador, in the Caribbean, and elsewhere in the world.

“I’ve swum with some of the most magnificent creatures, and I know that they may very well be more intelligent than me,” Fonda said. “And I love them, and I think that we should all understand that we’re talking about saving the last great wild animals that are hunted for food.”

Fonda said the world can’t survive without healthy oceans, which scientists say provide 50&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;of the oxygen we breathe. But the oceans are subject to overfishing and pollution, including pieces of plastic that fish eat, she said.

The heating of the ocean as a result of climate change is also killing kelp beds that many marine creatures depend on to live, she said, and the leaching of fertiliser from industrial farms “is causing massive and expanding dead zones in the ocean.”

Hervé Berville, France’s secretary of state for the sea who sat next to Fonda, said he believes “we have the political momentum” during negotiations that end on March 3 to overcome the remaining challenges and reach agreement on a treaty protecting 30&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;of the ocean by 2030.

Fonda warned that time is running out.

“Even dogs don’t poop in their kennel, because they know that the kennel provides security and a home for them,” she said. “We’re pooping in our kennel.”

Humans are destroying things they don’t understand, Fonda said.

“Why the treaty is important is it will force us to behave right, and to save this great ally that we have called the ocean — the one ocean on this blue planet that can save us,” she said. “There’s a lot at stake.”

A man convicted of gunning down rapper Nipsey Hussle in 2019 is likely to get life in prison when he is sentenced Wednesday in a Los Angeles courtroom.

Jurors in July found Eric R. Holder Jr., 32, guilty of the first-degree murder of the 33-year-old Grammy-nominated hip-hop artist outside the clothing store Hussle founded, the Marathon, in the South Los Angeles neighbourhood&nbsp;where both men grew up.

Holder was also convicted of two counts of attempted voluntary manslaughter and two counts of assault with a firearm for gunfire that hit two other men at the scene who survived.

The sentencing has been delayed in part so defence attorney Aaron Jansen could move for Superior Court Judge H. Clay Jacke to reduce Holder’s conviction to manslaughter or second-degree murder, which the judge rejected in December.

Jacke will have a broad range of possibilities when he sentences Holder at the Thursday morning hearing, but the murder conviction alone carries a term of 25 years to life. The other convictions, and special sentencing circumstances that jurors found true, make it almost certain Holder will spend the rest of his life in prison. Holder was not eligible for the death penalty.

“We hope that there is some resounding peace in the fact that his killer will be in prison likely for the rest of his life,” the lead prosecutor, Deputy District Attorney John McKinney, said after the verdict.

Actor Lauren London, who was Hussle’s partner and the mother of his two young children, did not attend any part of the trial, nor did any of his relatives, and none are expected to give victim impact statements, as often happens at such hearings.

The evidence against Holder was so overwhelming — from eyewitnesses to surveillance cameras from local businesses that captured his arrival, the shooting and his departure — that his attorney conceded during trial that he had shot Hussle.

But Jansen argued to jurors that the heated circumstances of the shooting meant a lesser verdict of voluntary manslaughter was merited.

The jury returned with the first-degree murder verdict after about six hours of deliberations.

Jansen said afterward that he was “deeply disappointed” in the verdict, which they planned to appeal.

He did manage a minor victory for Holder by securing the attempted voluntary manslaughter convictions where prosecutors had sought attempted murder verdicts.

The sentencing, originally scheduled for September but postponed at the request of the defence, brings an end to a legal saga that lasted more than three years and a trial that was often delayed because of the pandemic.

Hussle, whose legal name is Ermias Asghedom, and Holder had known each other for years growing up as members of the Rollin’ 60s in South LA. Both were aspiring rappers. But Holder never found the same success as Hussle, who would become a local hero and a national celebrity.

A chance meeting outside the Marathon, in a shopping centre Hussle owned, led to a conversation the two men had about rumours&nbsp;that Holder had been acting as an informant for authorities. Jansen argued that being publicly accused of being a “snitch” by a person as prominent as Hussle brought on a “heat of passion” in Holder that prompted the shooting.

A woman who was with Holder that day took a photo with Hussle before becoming Holder’s unwitting getaway driver, was a key witness for the prosecution.

After years of devoted work that won him underground acclaim — his nickname was both a play on the name of comedian Nipsey Russell and a nod to the hustle the future hip-hop star showed in making music and selling CDs — Hussle had just released his major-label debut album and earned his first Grammy nomination when he was killed.

Recently, it was reported that Shyamalan is switching to Warner Bros from his longtime home Universal. He signed a multi-year first-look directing and producing deal, as per Deadline.&nbsp;

This comes after it emerged that the English editions of Dahl's books will be rewritten by publisher Puffin to remove allegedly offensive language and make the stories more palatable for the newer generations. The publisher&nbsp; had hired "sensitivity readers" to rewrite certain portions of Dahl's books so they “can continue to be enjoyed by all today”. Some of the edits include the removal of words that describe physical appearance of characters like "fat" and "ugly". Other changes include addition of gender-neutral terms. For instance, while earlier Oompa Loompas of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory were "small men", they are now "small people".

Éditions Gallimard, the French publisher, has said that the changes were done only to the English version of the books. “This rewriting only affects Great Britain. We have never modified Roald Dahl’s writings and we have no plans to do so today,” a spokesperson was quoted by The Guardian.

The reactions to changes made to Dahl's stories are mostly negative. Salman Rushdie, the Booker-winning author who was violently attacked last year, wrote on Twitter, "Roald Dahl was no angel but this is absurd censorship/ Puffin Books and the Dahl estate should be ashamed.”

Fantasy author Robin Hobb wrote, "The best part of owning books on paper is no one can come into your home and change them. My Roald Dahl books will remain as he wrote them."

Following a scuffle incident at a live concert by Indian singer Sonu Nigam in Mumbai's Chembur area on Monday night, the police registered a case against a man, reported news agency ANI. The charges include voluntarily causing hurt and wrongful restraint. The case has been filed based on Nigam's complaint, and the man identified as Swapnil Phaterpekar has been accused of pushing Nigam and two other men after holding onto the singer while he was coming down from the stage. One of the two men sustained injuries. The police have charged Phaterpekar under IPC sections 323, 341, and 337. DCP Hemrajsingh told the media that the injured has been identified as Rabbani, a friend of Nigam's.

In a statement quoted by ANI, Nigam said, "After the concert, I was coming down from stage when a man held me. Then he pushed Hari &amp; Rabbani who came to save me. Then I fell on steps. Rabbani (the injured one, who accompanied Sonu) could have died today if there were some iron rods lying down. He was pushed in such a way... you could see in the video...Even I was about to fall."
