Rapper Da Brat announces pregnancy at 48 with wife: 'It's been quite a journey'

<p>Charges are mounting against a <em>Dances with Wolves </em>actor who is accused of sexually abusing and trafficking Indigenous women and girls in the US and Canada for decades.</p>

<p>A grand jury in Nevada indicted Nathan Chasing Horse on Wednesday on 19 counts, expanding on previous charges of sexual assault, trafficking, and child abuse to include kidnapping, lewdness and drug trafficking. Chasing Horse, 46, now faces charges in four jurisdictions, with the newest case brought by prosecutors on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation in Montana.</p>

<p>Police in Las Vegas have described Chasing Horse as a cult leader who used his position as a self-proclaimed medicine man to gain access to Indigenous girls and women, who he physically and sexually assaulted and took as underage wives. Prosecutors also accused him of grooming young girls to replace his older wives. His followers in the cult known as The Circle believed he had healing powers and could communicate with higher beings.</p>

<p>Chasing Horse’s public defender, Kristy Holston, told The Associated Press that she was looking forward to revealing holes in the state’s case during a preliminary hearing that was canceled Wednesday morning ahead of the indictment. She declined to elaborate.</p>

<p>“Since the public is so interested in this case and because only select details of the accusations have been released, we think it would be most appropriate for the State to present their evidence in a public hearing where the defence can reveal the weaknesses of the State’s case on the record in court,” she said in an email.</p>

<p>Holston didn’t immediately respond Wednesday afternoon for comment on the additional charges filed against her client. An arraignment is scheduled for March 1 in Clark County District Court.</p>

<p>Chasing Horse has declined multiple requests from the AP for an interview from the Las Vegas jail where he’s being held on a $300,000 bond.</p>

<p>Born on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota, Chasing Horse is widely known for his role as Smiles a Lot in Kevin Costner’s 1990 Oscar-winning film, <em>Dance&nbsp;with Wolves</em>. He was arrested on January 31 near the North Las Vegas home he shared with his five wives.</p>

<p>Authorities searched the home and found firearms, psilocybin mushrooms, 41 pounds of marijuana, and two cellphones containing videos and photos of underage girls being sexually assaulted, according to an arrest report.</p>

<p>Chasing Horse’s arrest in Nevada was the culmination of a months-long investigation by Las Vegas police. According to court documents, police uncovered a pattern of sexual abuse and alleged crimes dating back to the 2000s across multiple states, including Montana and South Dakota, as well as Canada, where he’s been charged with a 2018 rape in British Columbia.</p>

<p>Earlier this month, prosecutors with the Fort Peck Tribes in Montana charged Chasing Horse with one count of aggravated sexual assault in connection with a 2005 rape, according to a warrant obtained by the AP.</p>

<p>Ken Trottier, a tribal court criminal investigator, said Wednesday that two teenage girls at the time had accused Chasing Horse of rape. The investigation was closed, Trottier said, because the girls’ statements couldn’t be corroborated.</p>

<p>That changed after Chasing Horse was arrested in Nevada, Trottier said, with more evidence that allowed Fort Peck to pursue a criminal case.</p>

<p>It’s unlikely, though, that Chasing Horse will ever appear in tribal court, Trottier said. Tribal leaders banished him from the reservation nearly a decade ago amid allegations of human trafficking.</p>

<p>“We don’t ever expect him to return here,” Trottier told the AP. “If he ever steps foot on our reservation, he will be hunted.”</p>

<p>Trottier said Wednesday that he hopes federal prosecutors in Montana will step in, allowing for stiffer penalties if Chasing Horse is charged and convicted of any crime on the reservation — where federal authorities have concurrent jurisdiction when the victim and suspect are both Native American.</p>

<p>“I will probably never have the satisfaction of being able to put handcuffs on him,” Trottier said, “but at least we’re able to help the Las Vegas case and other investigations.”</p>

The studio has reaped rich dividends in the last decade or so with properties like Marvel and Star Wars. But in this humongous machine, not every cog is working as well as it should. Many of the company's Marvel shows and movies, which come under the umbrella of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, have suffered in quality after the 2019's culmination that was <em>Avengers: Endgame</em>. The latest entry, <em>Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania</em>, was supposed to be this important and yet light-hearted introduction to the next Big Bad of MCU, called Kang the Conqueror, played by Jonathan Majors, and yet the film did not please most critics.&nbsp;</p>

<p>One of the major things critics took exception to was the CGI quality of the film.</p>

<p>Now, as per a report in Vulture, it may be the case that bad CGI and VFX in the film may have been due to the focus being on <strong><em>Black Panther: Wakanda Forever</em></strong>. Both films were in development and post-production at the same time. And it appears the VFX artists on <em>Quantumania </em>were not provided proper resources as compared to those working on <em>Wakanda Forever.</em></p>

<h2>Why are VFX artists resentful?</h2>

<p>VFX artists have long been complaining about long hours, low pay, lack of job security, and poor working conditions in Hollywood. They are often required to work overtime and weekends to meet tight deadlines, and the intense pressure to deliver high-quality work can lead to burnout and mental health issues. Many VFX artists have also expressed frustration with the lack of recognition they receive for their contributions to blockbuster films, which often generate billions of dollars in revenue.&nbsp;</p>

But if it comes down to them not being comfortable with their bank numbers and us working until burnout, we lose out every time. Honestly, I equate it to human greed."</p>

<p>One other said, "Wakanda Forever took precedence. It felt like the higher-up and supervisor roles were shifted around to put that on their plates and there was a smaller team working on Ant-Man. It was on the back burner — less of a pressing thing. Maybe the director had an idea of what he wanted, but he wasn’t 100 percent clear. We had a rough environment that we were sticking a few main characters in. At that time, we weren’t told where the characters should be in that environment. We were just going with what felt right. Then there were times when we were creating an actor’s entire action: Ant-Man moving across something. And you just think, Why didn’t they film it the right way or how they wanted in the first place? Why are we having to redo and re-create? Why do we have to Frankenstein together an actor’s performance? A quick shot that maybe takes two seconds would have to be redone 20 times to get the look that they want. There was a lot of reworking, a lot of inefficiency. I ended up taking over and reworking a large portion of other artists’ work — which is not how things usually go when you are working for other studios."</p>

<p>In recent years, some VFX artists have organised to demand better working conditions and unionisation, which they believe would give them greater bargaining power and more leverage in negotiations with studios.</p>

Ant-Man 3 VFX artists reveal why MCU film's CGI is so bad: 'Human greed'

<p>On December&nbsp;22, 1985, The Associated Press reported the following from Blue Ridge, Georgia:</p>

<p>“Investigators searching for cocaine dropped by an airborne smuggler have found a ripped-up shipment of the sweet-smelling powder and the remains of a bear that apparently died of a multimillion-dollar high.”</p>

<p>Police found a sad scene. A 175-lb. black bear dead near a duffle bag and some $2 million worth of cocaine that had been opened and scattered over a hillside. The parachutist, a former Kentucky narcotics investigator, had fallen to his death in a backyard in Knoxville, Tennessee. His unmanned airplane crashed into a North Carolina mountain. Back in Georgia, the bear, examiners said, had overdosed.</p>

<p>The story is in many ways too much. Too absurd. Too ’80s. Even the screenwriters of the <em>Fast &amp; Furious</em> movies would think it far-fetched. The stranger-than-fiction tale quickly receded from the headlines and, before some began to stoke the myth of Pablo Escobear, it mostly stayed buried in news media archives.</p>

<p>“You have to demonstrate theatricality to get the greenlight. It just means you have to swing the bat a little harder,” Lord says. “In this world that’s increasingly mechanised, things that don’t feel mechanised have really special value.”</p>

<p>Miller and Lord have in recent years shepherded some of the most vibrant and irreverent films to the screen, including<em> The Lego Movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,</em>&nbsp;and <em>The Mitchells vs the Machines</em>. They like to take apart old conventions and give them an absurdist, post-modern spin.</p>

<p>“Certainly, this movie was not mandated by a corporation,” Miller says, laughing. “It’s a thing we somehow snuck through the system. That’s how we love to make all our movies, like: ‘I can’t believe they let us get away with this.’”</p>

<p>Warden had been a production assistant on their 2012 action comedy <em>21 Jump Street</em>. After hearing about the 1985 story, Warden wrote the script on spec and hoped his old bosses would like it. Intrigued at the screenplay’s possibility, the producers found an unexpectedly open reception from Universal Pictures chief Donna Langley.</p>

<p>“What’s funny is that we thought it would be difficult because of the subject matter. But surprisingly, they were excited right from the jump and didn’t shy away from the movie, its tone, or even its title,” says Miller. “We thought at some point, someone was going to say, ‘Well you can’t call it <em>Cocaine Bear</em>.&nbsp;You have to call it <em>A Walk in the Woods.</em>”</p>

<p>Since her directorial debut in 2015′s <em>Pitch Perfect 2,</em> Banks has carved out a second career behind the camera. She last helmed 2019′s <em>Charlie’s Angels</em>. With Universal’s backing and Lord and Miller producing, <em>Cocaine Bear</em> struck her as not just a viable, actually-happening project but one where she could marry a gory animal attack movie with comedy.</p>

<p>“Most people are surprised that it is a real thing, and very surprised that I’m the person that made it,” says Banks, laughing. “I just got a text from someone who was like, ‘I’ve been hearing about this movie and I had no idea you made it.’”</p>

<p>Though the title meant <em>Cocaine Bear</em> would be limited from some advertising platforms, the filmmakers describe the studio as interested in leaning into what made the film distinct from all the options viewers are inundated with. Nothing, it turned out, could cut through all the noise like <em>Cocaine Bear.</em></p>

<p>“They love things with a strong flavour. That’s the word I hear a lot in my marketing meetings,” Banks says. “It’s harder and harder to find things that are theatrically exciting. The hope was that we were making something people needed to leave their house to see.”</p>

<p>The film, itself, takes the basis of the real story and imagines what might have transpired if the bear didn’t quickly die but went on a coke-fueled rampage through a national forest, terrorising park wardens, campers, and drug dealers seeking the lost shipment. After an initial taste, the bear goes after more cocaine with all the zeal of Yogi pursuing a picnic basket.</p>

<p>The bear, named Cokie, was a CGI concoction created by Weta FX with Allen Henry, a stuntman and student of Andy Serkis, performing motion capture. He wore all black and walked on all fours with prosthetic arms. The rest of the cast includes Keri Russell, Margo Martindale, Alden Ehrenreich, O’Shea Jackson, and Ray Liotta. It’s one of Liotta’s final performances before his death last May, and one that connects back to his similarly cocaine-laced performance in Goodfellas.</p>

<p>“I’ve said that this film felt very risky. The risk was: I was never going to have the lead character of the movie on the set of the movie,” Banks says. “That was truly what scared me the most. If the bear didn’t work, the movie falls apart.”</p>

<p>Lord and Miller hope that there’s a rising realisation within the film industry that movies that are audaciously original can pack theatres. Lord points to the Academy Awards favorite Everything Everywhere All at Once as recent proof.</p>

<p>“It could win best picture and it’s the zaniest idea out there,” Lord says. “For the scale of that movie, it’s a huge hit. What we’re after is demonstrating that these movies can be original and fun and surprising and they can be hits.”</p>

<p>“I can’t think of a movie that came out last year that wouldn’t have been maybe a little bit better if there had a been a cocaine-fueled bear on a rampage as part of it,” adds Miller. “Imagine if The Banshees of Inisherin had a big bear just running through biting that guy’s fingers off.”</p>

<p>If it’s successful, <em>Cocaine Bear </em>could, of course, become a franchise of its own. A sequel isn’t out of the question. <em>LSD Armadillo</em>? <em>Quaalude Tortoise?</em> Banks, for now, is deferring.</p>

While Kaur alleged Webb does not know history, Webb on her part said that the history of the diamond is murky.</p>

<p>The Kohinoor diamond, a large and colorless diamond mined in India, is said to have been part of the crown jewels of various Indian rulers, including the Mughals and Sikhs, as well as Persians. After the Second Anglo-Sikh War in 1849, the diamond was, indeed legally, acquired by Queen Victoria as part of a treaty. And since then, it has remained in British possession.</p>

<p>However, controversy surrounds its ownership, as many Indians believe it was taken from the country under questionable circumstances and should be returned to its rightful owners. In contrast, the British maintain that they obtained the diamond legally and therefore are its rightful owners.</p>

<p>The issue of its ownership has sparked heated debate and controversy between India and the UK. India has formally demanded its return many times. After India gained independence in 1947, the government immediately requested the return of the Koh-i-Noor diamond from the British Government. A second request was made in 1953 during Queen Elizabeth II's coronation, but both appeals were denied by the British Government which deemed the ownership to be non-negotiable.</p>

<p>In 2000, several members of the Indian Parliament signed a letter calling for the diamond to be returned to India, citing that it was taken unlawfully. However, British officials claimed that due to conflicting claims, it was impossible to determine the original owner, and that the diamond had been part of Britain's heritage for over 150 years.</p>

Among the many Indian possessions that Indians want back from the British, the Kohinoor diamond probably tops the list. One of the largest cut diamonds in the world, it currently adorns the crown of the late Queen Elizabeth. In a recent episode of the British breakfast television show Good Morning Britain, a debate was being held on whether the UK should actually return the jewel. But it soon descended into a shouting match between Indian-origin British journalist Narinder Kaur and broadcaster Emma Webb. While Kaur alleged Webb does not know history, Webb on her part said that the history of the diamond is murky. They stole it from the Persian empire. The Persian empire invaded the Mughal empire so this is a contested object," said Webb. "You do not know history. It represents colonisation and bloodshed. Give it back to India. I don't see why an Indian child from India has to travel all the way to the UK to look at it and pay for it," countered Kaur. Who owns Kohinoor, really? The Kohinoor diamond, a large and colorless diamond mined in India, is said to have been part of the crown jewels of various Indian rulers, including the Mughals and Sikhs, as well as Persians. After the Second Anglo-Sikh War in 1849, the diamond was, indeed legally, acquired by Queen Victoria as part of a treaty. And since then, it has remained in British possession. However, controversy surrounds its ownership, as many Indians believe it was taken from the country under questionable circumstances and should be returned to its rightful owners. In contrast, the British maintain that they obtained the diamond legally and therefore are its rightful owners. The issue of its ownership has sparked heated debate and controversy between India and the UK. India has formally demanded its return many times. After India gained independence in 1947, the government immediately requested the return of the Koh-i-Noor diamond from the British Government. A second request was made in 1953 during Queen Elizabeth II's coronation, but both appeals were denied by the British Government which deemed the ownership to be non-negotiable. In 2000, several members of the Indian Parliament signed a letter calling for the diamond to be returned to India, citing that it was taken unlawfully. However, British officials claimed that due to conflicting claims, it was impossible to determine the original owner, and that the diamond had been part of Britain's heritage for over 150 years.
